Selwyn Athletic Club competitors Jody McCarthy-Dempsey and Meg Edwards in the hurdles event.

The Colgate Games saw 1024 athletes from both North and South Islands, along with a team of forty from Queensland,

compete over three days at Nga Puna Wai, Christchurch. The event, which has been sponsored by Colgate for

42 years, took place on January 17, 18 and 19th, and still places its emphasis on sportsmanship and participation. While younger athletes are awarded pennants for places, older athletes received medals.

Selwyn 7 - 9 year olds performed well, enjoyed the experience and many came away with either a bronze, silver or gold pennant from their divisions.

SO YOU GOT THE SHINY NEW TOYS - KNOW HOW TO SET THEM UP - PROPERLY? When you first get the new, lets say laptop, a few things will help to continue to make it run well for a good long while. Firstly login with your Microsoft account - don’t have one? Then make one! It will save your favourites, sync your desktop, screensavers and personal settings across all the devices you log into with the same details.

As soon as you have logged in then go down to the bottom right hand corner and look for one drive. When you find it click on it to log in and it will ask you for your Windows login details. i.e. email address and password.

Once logged in here you have a space up in the cloud where you can save your documents and photos. If any thing does happen to your device then you can start up on another device and put into One Drive your Windows password again and there is all your stuff. If you go beyond the free (5Gb) then you will need to buy more space. Then maybe investigate Office 365 which is $100.00 per year giving you Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher etc; but also gives you 1000Gb of OneDrive space which is enough to back up anything. Next go into Control Panel, look for Programs and Features and scroll down to where you find one of the trial antivirus programs. Left click on it once to highlight then up to the top to uninstall. After that happens and you say yes to all the “Are you sure and Are you really sure” then you will need to restart your machine. That very act cleans up the remnants of the trial program and then turns on Windows Security Defender the free antivirus and spyware fighter that is made by Microsoft and updates itself, scans your machine and watches out for aberrant behaviour. Once you have done that, then WINDOWS UPDATES…. which is next month’s column.

Scottish duo, Saltire, David Vernon and Alex Hodgson will perform in Hororata for one night only on Wednesday, February 5th at the Hororata Hall. The concert guarantees an evening of raucous entertainment.

“Saltire are coming to Hororata on their way to the Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo which is the Saturday following,” explained Cindy Driscoll, Driscoll Hororata Community Trust.

“David and Alex played in our community in 2017 and loved it so much that they ensured they could come back to Hororata this trip to New Zealand. The Hororata Whisky may have left a lasting impression,” Cindy laughed.

Saltire promises to be highly entertaining. Both performers bring their own unique personalities to the stage.

Prestonpans, East Lothian singer/songwriter/guitarist Alex Hodgson has made 2 CD’s having signed to Greentrax Recording and has performed for the Queen at the Ghillie Ball at Balmoral. His music is distinctively Scottish, with both a charm and humour, along with a keen love of Scottish variety theatre. Alex is a born entertainer!

Supplementing your income on a farm is nothing new.

Diversification has taken on many forms over the years for our farming community, aided by the changes in technology.

Farmers have added additional crops, or stock types, to their traditional sheep or beef farms to ensure paydays occur throughout the year, and not all eggs are located in one basket.

More recently farm tourism has increased with many farms utilising their unique location, their beautiful views and their tranquil settings to provide impressive, on farm, visitor accommodation experiences.

With resource consents often required for visitor accommodation as a nontraditional farm activity, we are

not complying with the district plan. Perhaps simply utilising old workers’ accommodation for visitors and there are no new buildings on the property, so no new building consent is being sought. The change in activity from residential use for permanent tenants, to more transient visitors often requires resource consent, despite the lack of increased building.

Alternatively, farms are installing new buildings, in beautiful settings, custom built, for visitors to feel fully immersed in the farming experience. Often these are located so as to avoid the dusty, dirty or smelly parts of actual farming. Visitors expect a certain level of amenity including flush toilets, running water and stunning views.

accommodation? Why does it matter? Visitor accommodation increases the number of vehicles driven by people not familiar with the road network, utilising our more remote roads, and putting pressure on Council to keep these maintained. Additionally, in more developed farming areas, visitor accommodation on farms may simply upset the neighbourhood. In more remote areas, there may be an impact on the unique landscape values the areas are valued for.

The resource consents process enables all of these factors to be considered, along with any other unique features of your proposed visitor accommodation experience that might have an effect on our rural amenity and environments.

Some smaller scaled visitor accommodation, or homestay activities, might be permitted depending on the specific rules of the Council, so it always pays to check with the district plan before embarking on a new farm diversification plan involving farm stays, home stays or visitor accommodation on your farm.

Supplementing your farming income by diversifying to provide visitor accommodation is a great way to avoid having all your eggs in one basket. But to avoid the headache and red tape of the district plan and resource consenting requirements it pays to check if you’re allowed to establish a new visitor accommodation activity on your farm.

Congratulations are definitely justified following the result gained in last weekend’s Junior Freeride Skiing Championship in Chamonix (France) by local skier Harry Cookson.

Cookson The News covered his previous weekend’s podium finish in Les Arcs with a third placing and on Saturday the sixteen year old topped this by coming in at first place against skiers from around the world.

In typical New Zealand laidback style Harry commented: “Super happy to take the top spot in my last comp here in Chamonix! Was a bit loose, but stoked to keep on my feet on the variable snow!”

The next step could well be the Junior World Championships - who knows, but Harry is certainly on the right track toward them.

When the Malvern Country Fete took place on November, 3rd 2019 at the Recreation Centre in Darfield it was raising necessary funds for a very worthwhile cause. The intended recipient was the Malvern Cancer Support Group and recently a representative of this group gratefully accepted donations from both the event organisers and Darfield Rural Women.

Darfield Rural Women are an active group who help behind the scenes at many local event Their six weekly meetings at Darfield Library would welcome new members (of any age). The Group organised a sausage sizzle at the Fete and in spite of extremely hot conditions succeeded in making a healthy profit to contribute to the Malvern Cancer Support Group.

Meanwhile members of the Support Group held their own fundraising, providing and serving refreshments. This venture raised almost $300, which when combined made a very healthy fundraising total of $3,300 for the day.

The event’s organisers, Pip Deans, Deans Pam Duncan and Carolyne Jones gratefully acknowledge the support of Malvern Community Board, Councillor Bob Mugford, Mugford loans

of vintage cars, the Darfield Fire Brigade vintage fire engine, and the donation of generous raffle prizes by stall holders.

Canterbury had an incredibly successful weekend in Waimate at the New Zealand Pony Club Association National Dressage Championships which were held

on January 18th - 19th for the South Island areas. The North Island part of this competition took place on January 11th 12th at the National Equestrian Centre in Taupo. This is an annual event which sees the top riders in each area compete for an overall trophy. The same judges adjudicate at both competitions making sure there is an even playing field for riders.

Teams comprising of a maximum of six riders, ride two championship tests each which count toward the team score.

Canterbury took out first place when competing against ten other area teams from all over New Zealand.

The team, consisting of junior riders (under fourteen years old) Fabriana Mcquarrie and Jorja Dann, Dann placed in both their classes, earning the national

top junior combination award.

Local rider Caitlin Rayne riding in the intermediate section (under eighteen years old), along with team mate, Darfield High School student Charlotte Thomas were thrilled to take out the top national intermediate combination. To top this off Charlotte went on to win the highest performing intermediate rider in New Zealand.

Senior riders, (under 24 years old) Lucy Cochrane and Brittany Fowler, Fowler were also successful with Lucy earning an accolade as the highest placed senior rider in New Zealand, while the pair won the senior combination prize.

“Many thanks must go to our wonderful coach Jenny Scotter and manager Becci Thomas for their support throughout the competition,” intermediate rider Caitlin Rayne said in conclusion.

On Saturday, January 25th the Hororata Fire brigade held a community barbeque. This annual event allows the Hororata Brigade an opportunity to invite the community along to relax, have a picnic and let the children have fun.

“We had about 40 - 50 children attend on the day,” reported Bruce Sayer, Senior Station Officer at the Hororata Fire Brigade.

“We had a great time and the community supported us well.”

While it looks slightly chaotic, it is in fact the arrival of golfers at the Hororata Golf Club for their interclub competition. The Club hosted 96 women players from sixteen Canterbury Clubs to compete in the event. There was much praise for the Club’s greenkeeper Andrew, and his helpers, who had presented the Course in great condition, albeit dry, so providing plenty of run, it was reported.

The lovely selection of food provided by the on-course Willows Café was also much enjoyed.

Selwyn Athletics Club member Breanna Beresford competed in the Colgate Games junior, eight year old girls’ division gaining outstanding results. Firsts in 100 metre sprint, long jump, shot put (with a PB of 5.85 metres) and 4 x 100 metre relay (with team mates Elodie Wrightman, Hayley Hoare, and Ezra Tapuvae). A second in the 60 metre and third in discus.

Christmas brought with it extra excitement for Wellington rider Jaimie Mulholland who has been accepted into Canterbury’s Dressage Academy.

The Canterbury Dressage Academy is based at Grange Road, Burnham and has a focus on ensuring talented young kiwi dressage riders have every opportunity to make it to the top.

Academy chair Tony Herstell said he and his team are committed to pairing top horses with talented riders and producing riders and trainers of tomorrow. “We are pleased to have filled our student quota for the 2019-2020 season with the addition of our latest talented student Jamie set to join us in February 2020,” Tony said.

He extended a huge thanks to all who had applied to the Academy and particularly those who had visited the establishment for assessment and wished them all every success in their future careers.

The list of current students and horses are: Rider: Abigail Smithies Horse: Wynter.

Owner: Tony Herstell and Brugs Nicholls (Brugs has trained and competed three horses to Grand Prix level which is the highest international dressage competition. She represented Great Britain for five years at both young and senior rider levels.) Abigail is from nearby Lincoln. She is the eldest of twelve children and runs her own business training and selling horses on behalf. She has spent the last few years riding green horses and is excited to take her riding to the next level and get out of her ‘green horse rut’ through the Academy.

Brugs since she was fourteen and has been a fixture at the stables for years. Thanks to that training, she has been able to set up her own business training horses while also attending Canterbury University.

Her commitment and talent has seen her take the ride on Tony’s horse Hells Bells and she is currently training him towards Grand Prix under Brugs’ watchful eye.

“T h e Ac ad e my r e m a in s committed to removing the financial barriers for students and provides the horse and the training for free; without our supporters the Academy would not exist,” Tony explained. “The Academy is fortunate to have one other horse available for the 2020-2021 season. ‘Funny’ will be matched with a talented student in 2020.

“The Academy is hugely appreciative of those who have loaned horses to students including Trudy Guy who was the first person to loan the academy a top-quality horse in ‘Lizzy’. For Tony it reinforces they are on the right track. “It shows the trust Trudy has in our training methods and the quality of the students we select,” he said.

The Academy is running fundraising activities in 2020 and welcomes everyone to their events including clinics with British Olympian Vicky Thompson Winfield who is scheduled to visit in late 2020.

Bookings are already being taken for the clinics which will be run by Vicky and Brugs.

Performance students from TM Dance World have kept busy over the school holidays being involved in the Showcase National Dance Championships held in Christchurch. The Showcase finals have been held on the Australian Gold Coast for the past twenty five years. The competition has grown so popular and large that for the first time ever Peter Oxford extended the Showcase finals to Christchurch and Perth, as well.

Our studio had thirty five dancers from junior, intermediate and senior performance teams attend the competition.

We performed eight team items altogether across Jazz, Lyrical and Contemporary sections. Our teams danced so well, all came away with Gold Awards, plus a first place for both Junior teams; Jazz and Lyrical. Third places were gained by the Intermediate Contemporary team and Senior Lyrical, while the Intermediate and Senior Jazz teams received fourth and fifth respectively.

Four of our team items then went on to make it to the finals’ event ‘Battle of the Stars’. This also meant these items all qualified to dance in the World Dance competition to be held in

Rubie Leech and Brianna Riddle - ‘Hold the Drama’ Jazz duo who received a high gold and second place. The girls also performed this duo at Battle of the Stars on finals’ night.

Two of our junior students Rubie Leech and Brianna Riddle also had their Jazz duo item ‘Hold the Drama’ selected to perform as well. These girls had placed second with a high gold in the Junior duo section to obtain this selection.

After an amazing night of dancing, at a very elite standard, our Battle of the Stars results saw the Junior teams place second and third, and the Intermediate contemporary team place second. We couldn't have come away any prouder of our dancers, they all rose to the occasion and danced their hearts out!

Throughout the competition we also had dancers perform solo, duo or trio acts. We had very good results across the board here too! We were excited to hear we also had a dancer in each of the top ten overalls for each age category too.

After losing yet another toss Darfield Captain Michael McCaughan could have been forgiven for thinking he would spend the first half of the day sweltering under the hot sun. But with 30 degrees forecast the Lincoln captain fancied his team’s chances of chasing, so asked the hosts to bat first.

This brought Jesse Frew (60) to the crease which in turn initiated Darfield’s best partnership of the innings as Frew and Nick Jenkins (37) watchfully guided Darfield to 125. anything loose. As both batsmen were well set the game turned around as Jenkins was out caught and Frew fell soon after to a direct hit while attempting a sneaky single. But before the wheels started to wobble Tim Boyle (40) and Ryan Hughes (30) kept the score moving further away from Lincoln’s grasp.

Clever batting from the tail especially Liam Foulkes (14 from 13 balls) and Jackson Pauling (7 from 7 balls) meant Darfield posted a respectable 234/9 from their allocated 45 overs. The 26 wides gifted were also gratefully received.

Lincoln’s chase started poorly as Liam and Zak Foulkes snared early wickets, but the visitors maintained their run rate as Darfield’s bowlers provided a boundary ball per over. Ryan Hughes in particular stuck to the plan of bowling full and straight. He may not have taken a wicket but he only conceded twenty runs from his five overs.

The Lincoln batters were certainly getting value for money when they hit over the infield and at 146/4 the game was finely balanced. Lincoln’s Joe Williams anchored the chase with 74 runs but Jesse Frew had other ideas.

Frew’s 5/22 from seven overs essentially wrapped up the game as Lincoln lost wickets at 147, 150, 164, 169 and 173 to be bowled out for 176 in the 37th over.

With three wins from their last five games Darfield have moved further up the points table. Still a long way from the top, but far enough from the bottom that they now have reason to smile.

The Men’s Malvern Fours (Cogswell Cup) was held at Darfield on Sunday, January 19th. Eight teams participated, five from West Melton, three from Darfield and one from Oxford. This was largely unfortunately due to a clash of dates with a prestigious tournament in Christchurch which some of our bowlers were invited to. Also, as a

trial this year, women were excluded. Sunday, turned out to be a rather warm day but some excellent bowls and close competition was seen throughout.

Eventual winners were, Ken Sharplin, Sharplin Derrol Fitzgibbon, Fitzgibbon Ron McNicholl, McNicholl skipped by Mike Leigh.

West Melton Bowling Club All pre-Christmas Centre, Malvern and Club competitions were completed with some good results being achieved by West Melton teams.

Congratulations to Paul Williams and Andy Weber who qualified for the final of the Bowls Canterbury Under 5’s, Division 1, Pairs Competition and went on to defeat a team from Hornby to win that event. Also Paul and Andy combined with Roye Daniels to win the final of the Bowls Canterbury Under 5’s Triples. This was a very good effort from our junior bowlers who are becoming very competitive.

The Bowls Canterbury Woman’s Rowntree Cup Final was played on the Centre’s green on January 15th. Congratulations to Barbara Herrick, Herrick Joan McGinnes, udy Payne and Ana McGinnes Judy Gooch who defeated a team from Kaiapoi Riverside 19 - 12 to win the Rowntree Cup competition.

All three Club Championships that were scheduled before Christmas were completed.

Competitions in the New Year for West Melton Bowlers include Centre Men’s 8’s and Under Fives 4’s, Interclub Under 5’s Triples, Men’s Club Pairs, Men’s and Women’s Club Singles and Saturday afternoon Super Pairs.

The morning conditions proved very pleasant, however the last two games in the afternoon were very trying for the players and markers due to the extreme heat. Temperatures rose to such a level that consideration was given to halt the event until the temperature died down.

There were some close games throughout the day which were all played in good spirit.

It was lovely to see the Patron Dave Knight and two Life Members Peggie Jenkins who sponsored the event and Helen Pearce in attendance the whole day.

The eventual winner being the only one with four wins Gretta Leigh from West Melton, runnerup Elva Glassey, Glassey Kirwee (a previous winner), third Hazel Littlejohn, Littlejohn Darfield and a very close fourth Yvonne Boulton from Kirwee.

After a two week break - while Club members competed at the NRANZ Nationals - shooting resumed on the Club’s range.

A hot afternoon greeted shooters on the Malvern Range, with a fishtailing wind blowing down the range from targets to the 300 yard mound. Some shooters coped better in the wind than others. In his first round John Snowden chose not to count his two 5's sighters going on to score two V bulls with his final counting shots. Good decision John.
