The sun shone, the day was warm and crowds came to the Hororata Domain to attend the Australian bushfire fundraising concert organised by local musician Holly Kimber and attended by many of her musician contacts. It was estimated around two hundred people came together to enjoy the food and the music describing the event as a ‘very happy afternoon, with a relaxed vibe’.

Those attending enjoyed the shade of the beautiful trees on

the Domain as temperatures soared. The total raised also soared with $2,500 to be donated.

“The bands were amazing, starting with Lisa who played Australia's national anthem on the saxophone to get the concert underway,” said a spokesperson for the organisers. “Big thanks to the food vendors and Event Hire for making the effort to come,” they added, “it was indeed. a very happy, relaxed afternoon,” they concluded.

Celebrate the first exhibition of the new year and decade at Te Huanui with Colour Comes Together. Showcasing the works of local artists Lorraine Jacobs, Jacobs Del Lowe and Jan Mitchell alongside Halswell Pottery's Gaye Morton and Linda Pringle, Pringle there is a range of style and mediums to suit all!

Gaye Morton has a passion for creating with clay, manipulating it into weird and wonderful forms alongside her wheel work for tableware, bringing her a life time of contentment working alongside Mother Nature.

Gaye's work exhibited in ‘Colour Comes Together’ is inspired by the wind and weather experienced across New Zealand's landscape, predominantly the blowing leaves of the iconic Cabbage Tree, where she has pushed boundaries and worked with different clays and colours.

Jan Mitchell's longstanding passion for creating began as a commercial artist for J Ballantyne & Co Ltd, followed by the Christchurch Star, before the printing industry changed overnight with the use of computers; drawing Jan back to painting again. As a self-taught painter, Jan's rooster paintings have become well known for their character and personality, a principle she is applying to her new works inspired by her love of gardening.

Lorraine Jacobs is an award winning contemporary artist and tutor working out of her ‘Broad View Studio’ in Darfield. In her paintings she aims to capture some of the dramatic beauty and interest she sees in the world around her, translating them into eye-catchin g landscapes, and sensitive portraits.

In this exhibition Lorraine has chosen to use acrylics and watercolours to portray some of New Zealand’s indigenous birds.

Del Lowe grew up surrounded by nature and animals and works from her studio located in Kowai Bush, Springfield. It is of no surprise that within her incredible surroundings having nature just at her doorstep and a vast array of farm animals and horses that she is continually inspired to paint and draw. Del is inspired to paint and draw animals, particularly horses, incorporating her interest for Renaissance Fine Art, Victorian Water Colour and Photo Realism.

Linda Pringle has been working with clay since 1981, with her works influenced by the socio political effects of British colonisation and continual migration to New Zealand, with a strong focus on ships and vessels.

The works in this exhibition have evolved to those that are simply fun. They represent the

enjoyment of recreational lifestyles and how important it is to us. The colours and textures on the larger works reflect the striking volcanic landscape that surround our harbours and lakes and the smaller porcelain works take on the hues of the water.

Shoe buckles, or maybe spats, will see folk step back in time to the roaring twenties for the Gunyah Garden Party. The Party is the perfect way to welcoming the new Roaring 20’s, and is to be held on Sunday, February 2nd at the Gunyah Country Estate as a fundraiser for the

Hororata Community Trust.

“We wanted to put on an event that provides people with a memorable experience, something different to anything else and we believe that is exactly what people will get at the Gunyah Garden Party,” explained Gunyah Country

The Ashburton Vintage Car Club will be at the Garden Party with their Posh Picnic display.

The Curio Club will present swinging jazz music at the event.

Michael FraserFraser-Milne, Milne a Malvern local and director of Whisky Galore, will be in attendance at the event with a range of gins and whiskies. Included in the ticket price is an appreciation tasting with Whisky Galore.

Ticket holders can also book an intimate gin master class with Michael which will be held around the Gunyah dining room table. Numbers are limited for the master class, with information sent to ticket holders prior to the event.

“It is wonderful to be able to hold an event like this at Gunyah Country Estate. I will give several talks about the history of the homestead and gardens during the afternoon for those who are interested. In between preparing and serving the food,” Simonetta said!

“We will be running a courtesy van from Darfield though to Windwhistle which can pick people up and drop them home,” organisers explained.

“There is also a sober driver ticket price available and the event will take place; wet or fine.

Because this is a catered event there will not be door sales,” they added. “Tickets must be purchased by January 31st.”

Helen chose Glentunnel Museum as she is interested in local history.

“I continued on at the Museum after the end of the programme and became a member of the Committee,” she explained. “I soon took it upon myself to network with other local heritage societies, one of which was the Canterbury/Westland Branch of

the New Zealand Founders Society. Through this, I met Templeton’s Pam Absolum, Absolum Chairwoman of the Canterbury/ Westland Branch of the New Zealand Founders Society,” Helen added. “The Society regularly visit local places of historical interest, and so Pam and I arranged that she and other members of the Society should visit the Glentunnel Museum.

The New Zealand Founders Inc. represent descendants of the early New Zealand settlers who arrived prior to December 31st, 1865.

“We share a common interest in the history of New Zealand and the achievements of its pioneers,” Pam said. “As descendants, we are always interested in how our forebears

lived, worked and survived coming to a new country with virtually nothing. Establishing homes, finding work and of course, the hardships of day to day living.”

“From small beginnings it is now time for us to give back in remembrance of the people who have long gone now, but who worked diligently in establishing the Branch, as well as those early settlers who went before us,” Pam explained.

Several members of the Canterbury/Westland NZ Founders Inc and their partners recently drove to Glentunnel and visited the museum which is totally manned by volunteers.

“The display of memorabilia included farming equipment, coal range and other household appliances - some that many of us remembered from when we were young,” Pam smiled. “It is a little gem full of local history from clay for bricks, to coal mining and farming. Plenty of books and materials for people to use if researching.

“Helen guided us through the various rooms and it was amazing the extent to which some of us made historical connections with the area,” she commented.

The Society recently decided to provide some local heritage operations with donations. A significant donation was given to the Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society, which has recently restarted sailings and so impressed were the Society with their visit to Glentunnel Museum that they were also gifted a generous donation. Needless to say the Museum committee were extremely appreciative of the gesture.

Glentunnel Museum is open on Sunday afternoons during daylight savings and a gold coin donation is appreciated.

country. Not only is he gaining valuable experience, he’s also gaining a podium place, coming in at third after last weekend’s competition. Third place against the best in the world, hailing from countries whose location allows easy access to yearround snow. Pretty outstanding results for a Canterbury skier, based at local field Mt Olympus.

Harry and fellow South Island skier Cameron Marshall are travelling together and meet up each day with the others in their group for training. Freeride skiing takes place on natural off -piste terrain and includes deep powder snow and steep runs.

The description of it as an action-packed, adrenalin sport, is definitely apt.

Harry had his first competition last weekend at Les Arcs in France and managed to pull off some great skiing to take a third place in the U16 Men’s division.

H arry commented, that conditions were good after some snowfall the night before and he was really happy to end up on the podium.

He is now focussing on, and looking forward to, his next competition this weekend at Chamonix, near the borders of France, Switzerland and Italy.

The current snow conditions overseas are quite hard due to the lack of white stuff over the past month. Harry laughed as he said, “it's pretty much exactly like skiing at home.”

After this next competition Harry will travel to Austria to support Taupo skiers Lach and Fynn Powell, who were invited to compete at the Freeride Junior World Champs, before heading home in early February.

Harry is extremely grateful for the support he has received from Darfield’s Gnomes Alpine Sports and the Malvern Lions, plus of course his family and friends who have helped make this trip possible.

A group of keen enthusiasts have established a steering committee to get U3A Malvern established in the area. The University of the Third Age, commonly referred to as U3A, is an international movement with the objectives of enjoying education and stimulation through learning for mostly retirement aged people.

Although not attached to, or accredited as, a university, it is a group where people come to learn and enjoy one another socially. Often hidden in the community there are individuals who have so much to offer. This is a platform in which to meet.

U3A Malvern plan to have an all -member meeting once a month (on the third Friday at the Darfield Baptist Church), when speakers will come and share their specialist knowledge.

These speakers can be local, or from afar, but they are generally

Absent Gavin Millard, Ian Sandford, Ian and Ruth Warren, getting U3A Malvern off the ground. recognised as having reached the peak in their own field, maybe in science or engineering, art or service, law or sports. Topics may be current, recent, or anecdotal, but people can be assured that they will be interesting!

U3A Malvern’s initial confirmed speaker for February, is outstanding, Surgeon and Professor Phil Bagshaw speaking on his work with the Canterbury Charity Hospital.

As the year progresses it is intended that smaller interest groups will evolve. These groups are generally run by members, in members’ homes, and are self-generating in that people of the group take turns at leading a topic. Interest groups in other U3A’s across New Zealand have been a huge part of the movement. Groups have formed around current affairs, local history, fitness,

movie appreciation and book groups such as ‘Famous and Infamous’ (a group dedicated to biographies), as examples.

Participation in these are optional, but it is predicted that members will be stimulated to join and will participate with enthusiasm. These groups can be about anything as long as there is interest enough. They will generally meet for about an hour or more, monthly. U3A is for the community and is in the community. Often busy studying and learning in the first stage of life, people move into working full-time and raising families in their second age. The third age recognises that life is a little less hectic, but still active learning occurs. U3A can be both entertaining and stimulating and members can pick up as many interest groups, or as few, as they can manage.

Recently 42 Nebraska State University Agricultural Science students and their three professors toured the South Island looking at the various regions' differing farming and land-use. The majority of the students were from ranches in Nebraska. As part of their overseas study programme with Lincoln University for 2019/20 they visited farms and associated industry venues

in Canterbury, the High Country, Marlborough, Westland, Central Otago and Southland. Taking some time out from the field study trip, they also had the opportunity to experience adventure activities in Queenstown, Mt Peel, Milford Sound, Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo.

Whilst visiting Canterbury they were given a tour of the Central Canterbury Plains including farms that were changing to intensive irrigation land use, and rural lifestyle developments in and around Darfield.

The group also visited Landsborough sub-division in Darfield where John Knox the tour guide and driver gave them an overview of his lifestyle section, landscaped with native and exotic trees. He explained that his attempt to create a garden which connects to nature and encourages diversity of flora and fauna was the most

The Darfield Premier team stuttered against Cheviot on Saturday 18th as they hosted the Hurunui side at Darfield. The toss was won by the visitors and they didn’t hesitate to bat first on what looked like a hard and even pitch.

Cheviot were rewarded for their decision as they steadily built a large total despite determined bowling from Darfield, especially Tim Hauschild (3/35), Ryan Hughes (1/51) and Jesse Frew (1/39). It just seemed to be one of those days however, when a ball was hit in the air it invariably fell in a gap and when a chance was given it was a tough catch that was spilled.

Darfield’s players refused to submit and held on tenaciously right till the last ball of the innings. Credit must also go to Cheviot batsman Will Hamilton who scored 114 runs from 127 balls.

Cheviot’s total of 278/5 from their 45 overs would require the Darfield batters to chase at just over six runs per over and they got off to a poor start with inform batsman Nick Jenkins falling in the first over of the innings.

Despite their best efforts a partnership of substance did not manifest and wickets regularly fell. Only Alister Collins (38), Michael McCaughan (25) and Ryan Hughes (23) kept

Darfield close to the required run rate, but it was wickets that determined the result.

Darfield were all out in the 38th over for 168, falling short by 110 runs.

Darfield host Lincoln on Saturday, January 25th in a game the players are highly motivated to win having been tipped up by Lincoln earlier in the season. Play starts at 12.30pm at the Darfield Recreation Reserve.
