Christmas Eve was enjoyed by the publican and patrons of the Kirwee Tavern and as they looked forward to the next day (a rest from duties for staff and owner Steve Evans) Evans and time to spend with family and/or friends for everyone else, the pub closed around 11.15pm. Steve and staff, locked up, set the alarms, ensured the tills were balanced, said their goodnights and Merry Christmasses, then headed home.

Not long after (about 11:45pm) local couple Gary and Chris Walker were heading to their home; as they turned left into Courtenay Road from the Main West Coast Road, they were horrified by the sight and sound of windows blowing out from the lower floor of the Tavern. Gary pulled over, away from the building, and sprinted back to

the fire station (across the road from the Pub) to set off the alarm.

Steve was alerted to the fire by a member of the Brigade who rang him at home, waking him from sleep, as soon as his Fire

and Emergency pager went off.

The rest is history - the building Steve had painted and planted to bring a smile to all who saw it, along with personal furnishings and fittings has gone. Burnt beyond saving.

Investigations have determined that the fire started in some old electrical wiring between the front door and the window, where the pool cues were stored.

Painters were hard at work prior to Christmas completing the beautiful windows at Trinity Church, Darfield.

The colourful nativity depictions remained on the windows until January 9th when after an hour and half’s scraping, followed by much vacuuming of dried paint they were removed. Revs Susan Baldwin and Lyn Sopoaga had the unenviable task of performing the clean-up.

“We definitely didn’t need a gym for upper arm exercises,” Susan laughed.

Erin Marsden, Marsden podiatrist, will already be well known to many in the area, both from her time at Darfield Pharmacy and a brief stint at Darfield Bakery.

Australian born Erin (Western Australia, 600km north of Perth), lives in Burnt Hill, Oxford on a ten acre lifestyle block, with her Kiwi husband and two daughters (five and seven), four Highland cattle, two kune kune pigs, plus a dog and a cat! She can often be found at various Highland Dancing events with her children, including the Hororata Highland Games.

Erin qualified as a podiatrist in Perth in 2004 and she and her husband Dan moved to Burnt Hill in May 2010 (just before the earthquakes). Dan is an electrician for PGG Wrightson Water fixing irrigators/centre point pivots.

While commuting to

Christchurch for many years, the company Erin worked for provided podiatry at the Darfield Pharmacy each fortnight. Commuting to the city with very small children wasn’t ideal and so Erin took a year out to consider her next move and took up a position at the Darfield Bakery in the interim.

Ready to restart the career she was trained for, but still reluctant to resume commuting, Erin is close to opening (January 25th) her own Podiatry business to cater for those living locally and throughout North Canterbury.

As well as a Rangiora location, Erin will also work from the Oxford Fitness Centre (across from Oxford Fire Station and behind the Oxford Community Pool. She is ACC registered, and Pegasus Diabetes High Risk Registered (six free visits a year to eligible patients).

Whilst working in Australian hospital and private settings, Erin specialised in high risk feet and wound care, as well as child developmental issues. Her new clinic has TBPI/ABPI (Toe Brachial Pressure Index/Ankle Brachial Pressure Index) equipment which compares the blood pressure of the big toe (or ankle) to the blood pressure of the arm, an important screening tool for at risk feet/ peripheral arterial disease.

“Since moving to New Zealand, where people will actually wear closed in shoes (as opposed to Western Australia, where it is too hot to wear much besides sandals or jandals/thongs), I have developed a keen interest in biomechanics (how people walk), footwear prescription and orthotics,” Erin explained.

When the New Year’s Honours list was published on New Year’s Eve it featured two names with close associations to the area, The first was Stu Jones of Kirwee (David David Stuart Jones) Jones who is a recipient of the Queen’s Service Medal for his services to Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Stu is currently Chief Fire Officer of the Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Ex Glentunnel resident David Malcolm Denton (Dave) was also awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for services to outdoor recreation and youth. Dave is the driving force behind the ‘Take A Kid Fishing’ initiative.

The Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) was instituted by New Zealand in 1975, at the same time as the Queen’s Service Order (QSO). The purpose of both the QSO and the QSM is to recognise voluntary service to the community and also elected or appointed public office. Up to sixty awards of the QSM can be made each year and recipients are entitled to use the postnominal letters 'QSM' after their names.

He was elected Station Officer of the Kirwee Brigade in 1984, became Deputy Chief Fire Officer in 1996, and has held the role of Chief Fire Officer since 2000. Stu has been the driving force behind numerous Brigade fundraising events to upgrade or replace equipment, replace operational support vehicles, and for the construction of a tanker shed, along with mentoring and training a number of firefighters over the years. After the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake, Stu was a member of a revolving crew stationed with Kirwee Brigade’s tanker at the Christchurch City station to assist other crews in the surrounding area in the weeks following.

Stu commented that it was a wonderful Honour to receive and gave thanks to the great team behind him, in all respects.

He expects to attend a Wellington investiture at Government House in May.

Dave commented: “I do feel it’s an honour, not just for me but for all the up to seventy volunteers that now make up the team for the ‘Take a Kid Fishing’ event. I’m proud of the event as we are now heading for the 32nd year. We cater for around 6,000 children each Stu Jones joined the Cust year, with a total attendance of Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1974 well over 100,000 kids. It’s all

free to the youngsters; loan fishing gear, bait, tuition from skilled anglers and several thousand dollars worth of fish just for the kids to catch. It’s as exciting to be involved now, as it was 31 years ago,” Dave said..

Investitures are held at Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and Dave plans to attend the Christchurch one the date is still to be advised.

Contact us for an appointment Hororata singer-songwriter, Holly Kimber was inspired to do something to help Australian rural communities who have suffered hugely, due to the horrendous bush fires in that country.

“Like many people I have found it hard to watch the disaster unfolding in Australia and really want to do something to help.

So, I have called on my musical friends and a number of other Hororata locals to put together a fundraising concert. The idea has quickly gathered momentum and within 24 hours we went from having an idea to actually planning the event,” Holly said.

The concert will take place this Sunday in Hororata and all proceeds will go to the BHR Fire Disaster and Drought Appeal administered by the Rotary Club

of Sydney. The fund is used to support fire impacted farmers by organising food for stock, supplies for people and much more.

“As a rural community who has felt the effects of natural disasters, we don’t want the funds just going into the general pool, we want them to be targeted to helping other farming communities. We researched a lot of funding options, but the BHR Fire Disaster and Drought Appeal seems to be having an impact when and where it is needed,” Holly explained.

There will be a number of musicians performing at the event, including Holly’s own band Chilton House. People are encouraged to bring a picnic and their own chair to enjoy a relaxed afternoon. There will

also be some food vendors present, all of whom will donate a share of their profits to the cause.

This year on February 6th 2020, the annual Malvern Family Fun day will again take place at the Darfield Recreation Reserve. The event, established by kind hearted community volunteers many years ago, is now hosted by the Two Rivers Community Trust.

This much loved family event has grown in popularity over the years and in 2020 organisers have adopted a theme of taking families on a trip down memory lane. Back to years gone by with some old school family events like sack and wheelbarrow races, gumboot throwing (with Selwyn Parenting Network) and Tug O’ War. Additionally there’s the more modern activities like bouncy castles, Pedalmania, face painting, archery, and music. There will be plenty of interactive creative activities from Selwyn Creative Network and watch for lots of active pursuits with Selwyn Sports Trust. In conjunction with House of bricks, the Two Rivers Community Trust are also holding a Lego competition.

Children will be able to build a car and race it down a ramp, with the aim of attaining the best distance. There will be prizes for various aspects, and interest in the competition should be registered from 10am onwards.

The Malvern Community Fun Day is designed so people can come together with their families to enjoy some fun as a community and without the need to spend a lot of money.

It is also an opportunity to

showcase Malvern’s local services, groups and initiatives, such as the Darfield Community Garden.

“Community-wide events like this in Malvern bring people from all walks of life together, strengthening the bonds between each other,” a spokesperson for the organisers commented. “Those bonds act to improve wellbeing, while helping to alleviate personal struggles. Establishing a strong area identity is also important, particularly for rural areas of Selwyn. Events like this help to connect their residents and keep old traditions alive, while making new ones as well.

It can also assist with attracting new visitors, by showing off what makes our area so unique. This has the added advantage of helping build a strong sense of pride for the community. A sense of pride amongst the community may also encourage members to take better care of their neighbourhoods,” they added.

Most of the activities at the event are completely free to enjoy. For purchase will be

vintage fire engine rides and plenty of food and drinks.

“We would really encourage, people to bring their own picnic and plan to enjoy each other’s company.

“The Two Rivers Community Trust’s vision for our district is to be a resilient community where people belong, contribute and flourish. Recognising the value of a community working together is a key focus for the Trust and they have worked in partnership with the district to establish and maintain many initiatives for the wider area.

It would appear that over time, and assisted by the earthquakes, the wiring had stretched and become distorted, so was no longer able to cope with the currents flowing through it. Had it not been Christmas Eve and had the pub been open later, as usual, the smouldering of the wires may well have been noticed - however in this instance it wasn’t the case.

The 141 year old building was built of Oxford Beech (with beautiful Rimu floors) barged down the Waimakariri River in the 1800’s and brought up Courtenay Road for the construction. Historic photos and mementoes have mostly gone and Steve would love to get some more old images to replace them. The News is happy to copy these, if anyone has some they’d like to bring into the office.

Of course the loss of the Pub is a huge blow to the surrounding community, along with the loss of five jobs. Insurance will cover some of the stock and chattels gone, but Steve is at the mercy of the building and land owner (who doesn’t reside in this area) for the possible replacement of the premises.

This owner may well decide to pocket the sizeable insurance payout he’ll receive, rather than rebuild - not realising the full impact the loss will have on those living in its surrounds.

As with any disaster there are always those who seek to line their own pockets without any concerns about how it affects others. Looters accessed the ruins and stole alcohol in the days following the fire and criminals also stole money from the burnt out bar tills. Darfield police have strong leads on the alcohol thieves it has been reported.

There has been much conjecture in the area regarding Selwyn District Council’s refusal to renew the liquor licence on the premises.

“This was under appeal,” Steve explained. “An appeal that has twelve months to be heard, so without the fire, it would’ve been business as usual,” he said.

“I can’t thank those that

assisted enough. Thanks to Gary and Chris for their observant, quick action and thanks to Bronwyn Foster and Kate Williams for opening their home and for providing food and drinks (along with numerous members of the community), to those actively fighting the fire. There were Brigades in attendance from not only around Kirwee, but also from Christchurch, along with the command unit to oversee the whole operation.

I’d also like to thank patrons and all those in the community

for their ongoing support - it is very much appreciated. I’d like to say we’re hopeful of a rebuild, but I haven’t been given that assurance yet by the property owner. While I have looked at the possibility of a pop-up bar on the site, the logistics of licencing etc make that not really a viable option,” Steve said.

So for now Steve is facing a raft of insurance paperwork and hoping for positive discussions with the building’s owner toward remaining the publican of a pub in Kirwee.

To the Editors: As a resident of Old West Coast Road, I am deeply concerned about the number of cars being burnt in our vicinity in the Waimakariri River regions (and there was another last weekend - with local Brigades called to attend).

It is only a matter of time in these dry conditions, as we have seen in Australia, that this can. and will, cause a major fire, endangering property and lives.

In the last month within five kilometres of our home, there have been four burnt out cars (now five), two have been shot by shotguns.

How and who is managing this situation and the potential problem?

It’s a police matter if vehicles have been stolen. As they have been completely burnt, then Reg and Vin are often gone, which removes identification to prove that they may have been stolen.

Police have said to me they can only get involved if a crime is been committed. Resources are so thin they cannot send patrols to the 60 kms of riverbed in case a crime might have been committed.

Sometimes they have been burned in the water, polluting our waterways with fuels and plastics.

This is a recreation area for the people; camping, fishing, cycling, walking (the dog ), boating. It needs to be safe.

At this point we can all see this is a larger problem. Are Selwyn District Council, Waimakariri District Council, Environment Canterbury, Waimakariri River Regional Park and Police talking, or doing anything right now about a resolution?

Selwyn residents are being invited to help rescue efforts for wildlife devastated by the Australian bushfires.

A campaign launched this week

by Selwyn Libraries aims to send supplies of pouches, wraps and nests which are desperately needed by agencies working with injured animals in fire-ravaged areas.

Libraries at Lincoln, Rolleston,

Leeston and Darfield are opening their doors for sewing enthusiasts and knitters to come in and help make the pouches, wraps and nests.

Patterns, materials and sewing machines will be available to use.

Nicki Moen, Moen Arts, Culture and Lifelong Learning Manager, said staff became aware of the Animal Rescue Craft Guild’s

“One of the things we can do is give practical assistance, by knitting and sewing pouches and wraps that will directly help rehabilitate animals injured in the wildfires.” Nicki said.

“People have been really touched by the plight of these animals, and the organisations that are struggling to keep up with the scale of the devastation.

“This appeal is an opportunity to bring the community together, repurpose old sheets and linen and give people a purpose who might otherwise feel helpless in Australia’s time of need. We’re grateful for the community’s support to help out in this way,” she added.

As well as coming in to libraries to make items, residents can also make items at home pattern and sewing requirements can be found online, or check the Selwyn Libraries Facebook page.

Demand is highest for kangaroo joey pouches, wraps for bats and crocheted nests for displaced birds.

Libraries are also keen to accept donations of soft natural fibres, such as flannelette cotton for linings.

Volunteers can call in to help, or drop off donations, to any Selwyn Library during normal opening hours. Completed items will be boxed up and posted to agencies in Australia.

The project will continue as long as the demand for items remains.

“In the meantime, with plans for the walking track to be constructed early in the New Year, we are keen on coming up with a name that suits the space, is local and that the community can be really proud of,” they explained. “We want our community to be involved in this so would love to hear your ideas and thoughts on what the space could be called. If there is some ‘background’ behind the suggested name, we’d love to know that too.”

The Springfield Township Committee will collate all names and make a final decision at their next meeting in February.

Small Strokes Synchro worked hard during the year, it was reported, with four members selected for the New Zealand team that competed in Malaysia during December.

There were eleven girls, from all over New Zealand, in this team and they competed in the 13/14/15 year Age Group Team, as well as the Open Combination Team. Both groups were placed second in the Open Asian Synchronised Swimming Competition.

“Our Club is very proud of these girls,” explained Small Strokes owner and head coach, Joan Billings.

St John in Darfield transported around 550 patients last year, in a 3:1 mix of both medical and trauma calls. While numbers may be down a little on previous years, that is a good thing, surely?

Due to changes to ensure that the community has the best possible Ambulance coverage and response times, your Ambulance may come from Darfield, Rolleston, Leeston or the city. Our Comms. centre will always dispatch the nearest available, appropriate resource.

We have also provided events’ cover throughout the area, sports, A & P Shows or Highland Games, Mud Plug etc. These events are important for the community, and it is good to be part of it.

Youth Divisions are successful in Darfield and West Melton, growing a new generation of motivated, trained, and involved members in the community. A measure of their success is evident in regional and national competitions.

We continue to work with our Emergency Services friends, the Police and FENZ, right throughout the wider area, to provide care and assistance where needed.

What’s new for this year? Apart from Business as usual.

We start 2020 offering a First Aid course locally, on February 15th. This will be a one day course meeting workplace

requirements as well as offering training to members of the public. See details in the Malvern News in January, as well as local fliers. It has been a while.

The Area committees in the wider Selwyn area are working towards amalgamation, which will lead to efficiencies of service delivery, while still retaining some local identity.

We hope to be at more shows and events throughout Malvern.

We look forward to recruiting more volunteers into St John, to

provide training, and deliver improved service to our local community.

The Darfield Premier team got their season back on track with a six wicket win against Oxford/Rangiora at Pearson Park in Oxford on Saturday, January 11th.

Oxford won the toss and batted first on a dry, flat pitch.

With a short boundary to one side and a fast outfield the hosts would have been looking for a big score, but Darfield’s bowlers stuck to the plan of bowling full and straight.

The first wicket fell at 51 and then two more at 57 which allowed Zak Foulkes (3/30) and debutant Isaac Earl (3 / 2 0 ) t o e nt e r t he attack. These two in particular bowled with good control and Oxford were never given a chance to repair their innings as the Darfield bowlers refused to concede.

A total of 163 never looked like it would be enough but Darfield have stumbled, chasing smaller totals before.

A quick fire nineteen runs from twelve balls from Zak Foulkes got the start the team wanted. Oxford’s bowlers did not show the same discipline as Darfield, so when they strayed short or wide the short boundary was peppered, including one shot from Nick Jenkins (53) that rolled down the road and took several minutes to be collected. Nick showed maturity by holding his team’s innings together and allowed the bowlers no respite. He clobbered seven 4’s in his stay at the crease.

There was a slight wobble when Jesse Frew and Robbie Foulkes fell for five and four respectively, but with a required run rate of 4.1 there was no sign of panic. Ben Innes (36*) and Ryan Hughes (25*) finished the match in a flurry with fifteen overs unused. Ryan in particular was brutal and only faced fifteen balls to reach 25 not out.

On the weekend of January 4th local bowlers Dave Holland, Graeme Rowe and Gary Stubbs entered the Summerset National Singles and Pairs 2020. These were played in Christchurch from January 2nd to the 8th. They had pleasing results and for Dave and Gary selection followed to the Canterbury team to take part in the annual Lindley Neill Representative event. This was held at the Morrison Ave Bowling Club, Christchurch on January 11th and 12th. The Canterbury versus West Coast tournament saw twelve players from the Coast and

twelve from Canterbury compete in Pairs, Triples and Fours during the two day event. Canterbury emerged victorious taking back the trophy that had been held by the Coast for the last couple of years.

This weekend Dave and Gary have automatic entry into the Stu Butter Pairs, a tournament between Australian and New Zealand Bowlers held at Burnside over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The pair received this automatic entry after winning the Burnside Under 8’s- a creditable result for two out of towners!
