The Courtenay A & P Show was held on Saturday, November 23rd. It was reported to be a fantastic day with gate takings up from the previous year. “The feedback from those who attended the Show was very positive,” commented Anna Seaton, Seaton Secretary of the Courtenay A & P Association.

Many locals enjoyed seeing all that their local show had to offer, complete with fun and entertainment for all ages. Many will have next year’s Courtenay A & P Show date saved already as a must attend on their calendars.

given the unenviable task of selecting a recipient for this year’s Matson and Allan Young Achiever’s Award in conjunction with the Courtenay A & P Show, it was a more difficult decision than any of them envisaged. The calibre of the entrants was such that finally naming a winner took both time and expertise on behalf of the judging panel consisting of Show President, Wendy Chamberlain, Chamberlain Chris Flanagan of Matson and Allan and Banking Senior Credit Manager, local Gareth Reed.

Johnny Fresh - Darfield’s local green grocer has been open and supplying fresh produce to the area for four years now.

“We stock Greendale Butchery products as well, which have been a huge hit, as people can guarantee a quality cut of meat every time,” commented Mel Tapa, Tapa Manager of Johnny Fresh.

Greendale Butchery owned by locals Bronwyn and Matthew Dering have been in business eleven years. Based in Greendale, the business prides itself on producing top quality products.

Both Bronwyn and Matthew have joined forces with John Heasley owner of Johnny Fresh to establish a delivery service to those outside of the township who perhaps don’t have such easy access to the Shop, or who just enjoy the convenience.

“This is a great way for locals to support locals,” John said.

“The packs we promote and deliver are family friendly and aim to provide a good five to seven days worth of meat, vegetables and fruit delivered to your door,” Mel explained.

“They’re perfect for busy families,” she added. “We saw a need for these meat/vege/fruit selections as families don’t always want the pre-planned meal pack (another initiative Johnny Fresh provide). However they still enjoy the convenience of having everything in a pack that’s needed for a working week’s worth of meals,” she said.

The packs will change week to week, but will still have the same concept

meat+vege+fruit. The basics to create any dish and fill lunchboxes.

Delivery to the wider community areas include Kirwee, West Melton, Burnham and Rolleston at this stage. The packs are

picked and sorted fresh on the area’s delivery day.

To the Editors: West Melton District Residents’ Association (WMDRA) Inc have a petition running seeking government to approve funding for necessary safety improvements at the intersection of SH73 and Weedons Ross Road.

The issues around the intersection are well known; the often hairraising actions of drivers frustrated at lengthy delays while waiting to turn right from Weedons Ross Road.

As an interim measure, we applaud NZTA’s proposed speed reduction along SH73 approaches to West Melton Village.

The petition was submitted in my name on behalf of WMDRA with the ePetition closing at midnight this Friday, November 29th.

Following clarification from the Petitions Office at Parliament, we are able to run the paper version longer if we want (subject to confirmation by WMDRA). They’re treated as two separate petitions, (even though wording and petitioner are exactly the same), and they will be presented together to the House by Selwyn MP Amy Adams.

The Malvern Community Arts Council have had a busy year at the Gallery, and they would love the local community to celebrate their first summer as Te Huanui from Friday, November 29th! The Gallery’s annual summer exhibition is back, showcasing the talents of their sixty-plus artist members in a variety of mediums from painting and photography, to jewellery and pottery.

The cash-and-carry exhibition is just in time for the festive season, with all works in the Gallery available for immediate sale. “We’re showcasing many artists that our community has become familiar with, along with artists who’ve joined our ranks throughout 2019,” commented a Gallery spokesperson.

Summer at Te Huanui opens, with drinks and nibbles. The exhibition runs until the end of January 2020, with their dedicated team of volunteers having a very well deserved break from Friday, December 20th until the Gallery re-opens on Tuesday, January 7th.

The Malvern Community Arts Council and their sub-committees thank everyone very much for their support throughout 2019 and look forward to bringing an exciting range of art and performances in 2020.

Local Physiotherapist Matthew Brettkelly and his wife, Pilates aficionado Stephanie Neutze are getting geared up for their February 2020 Tour Aotearoa (TA) ride from Cape Reinga to Bluff. They hope to take thirty days to cover the 3,000 kilometre journey which winds its way through the country side.

Steph and Matt feel this is an opportune time to fundraise for a worthy cause. “It saddens us that New Zealand has the highest rate of youth suicide in the developed world - because this is so we have decided to ride for Youthline and in particular youth suicide prevention,” the couple said.

“We would love to reach our goal of raising $10,000, so any donation you wish to give will be much appreciated, as we try and do ‘our bit together’ towards preventing youth suicide in this country.

“We feel uncomfortable asking people to contribute, but the gravity of this youth suicide statistic has us thinking that we need to try and do something to help our young people realise that there is a better way,” Matt said.

Youthline is a first point of contact for young people across New Zealand to access a wide range of youth development and support services. One in five texts to Youthline relate specifically to suicide and two in five, relate to suicide, depression, self-harm and anxiety.

“As the parents of twenty and seventeen year old children it saddens us that New Zealand has such an atrocious rate of youth suicide. It is incredibly sad that our young people are choosing not to live, when there is so much that they can live for.

We are often told by our children that times are different now and that 'it is much harder growing up and being a young person'. Maybe they are right, we did not have to put up with the close scrutiny of social media. Our response to them is that they should be true to themselves, treat all people with the respect they deserve and have integrity,” both Steph and Matt stressed.

Over 350 Year 0-3 Malvern learners from Kirwee, Hororata, Windwhistle, Greendale and Darfield Primary, took part in the inaugural Selwyn Sports Trust; Run, Jump, Throw Carnival. The action took place at the Darfield Recreation Reserve rotating around sixteen different events that were led by the PALs (Physical Activity

Leaders) and trainees from Hororata and Darfield Primary School. All sixteen stations focussed on the fundamental skill development of athletes with running, jumping or throwing. These skills are transferable across all areas of physical development, in order for children to be confident, capable and successful. It was a

high energy day with loads of smiles, laughter, teamwork and enjoyment. The PALs did an outstanding job, presenting their games with enthusiasm and humour. Some exhausted children by the end, but a great day had by all.

More than one hundred people enjoyed a day of fun and sun when Darfield pool re-opened for summer with a pool party on Sunday, November 17th.

Selwyn District Council aquatic operations manager Nick McConaghty said, “a lot of young people attended and there were a lot of local children calling in which was wonderful to see.”

The giant inflatable obstacle course was a great hit it was reported and a free sausage sizzle was held, with about 130 sausages given out.

“Games were also held and spot prizes were awarded,” pool manager Christina

“The pool’s changing rooms have been painted and volunteer lifeguards have been recruited and trained to look after the swimmers over summer,” she added.

There will be another pool party in January with a DJ, giant inflatables, sausage sizzle, games and spot prizes as part of the Council’s Summer in Selwyn events.

With settlement confirmed on Thursday November 14th, “Property Brokers now owns and manages the day-to-day real estate business created from the agreement”, the two companies said in a statement.

“Farmlands Co-operative will continue to support real estate through its extensive network, events, customer loyalty programme and shareholder discounts.”

Farmlands said through the long term strategic partnership, it would retain its investment in real estate and would receive a commission on future sales.

Its farmer-grower shareholders would still receive special real estate offers as part of their cooperative ownership including a discount on commission and Choices Rewards Points, a customer loyalty scheme.

Last Saturday morning, mother nature brought the sunshine and Springfield residents the planting power, as ground was broken at the Springfield Community Pit. It was a milestone for the new project that has been in planning for many years thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of the Springfield Township Committee and support of the Selwyn Council.

With a freshly cleared site, over 220 native shrubs and trees were planted in what is the first stage of a nature rich community area to be created on the corner of Tramway Road and Tawera Lane in the Springfield Township.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Te Ara Kakariki Trust, 1,500 additional natives will continue to be planted in the coming year. The Trust, along with their small travelling army of eco-volunteers will join forces with local Springfield School students to carry out the planting creating a haven for local bees and native birds in the area.

Planning is also well underway for the new multi-purpose

perimeter walkway to be installed early next year, including six fitness stations that have been designed by RejuvenateYou. “It’s an exciting time for Springfield and great example of what can be achieved when a passionate township committee, local Council and enthusiastic

locals work together,” reported a committee spokesperson.

Chris, whose association with this award goes back twenty years, commented that this was likely the strongest overall pool of candidates he had ever seen.

The Award criteria included a series of considerations, with the highest weighting being on contribution to community.

Common themes in the Award nominees this year and which the candidates discussed in their interviews included: Three of the four candidates were either self-employed, or actively involved as key people within a family business.

Each candidate was challenged to identify an issue or theme playing out in the news, which they thought was either a cause for concern, or a cause for great optimism within our District. Most of the candidates identified growing mental health concerns and highlighted their own observations that our region was not immune to this.

We put each candidate on the spot, and challenged them as to how they would invest within the district $10M if Shane Jones asked them to find a home for his Provincial Growth Fund.

Social housing and mental health support was a common theme, as was the promotion of community welfare through sport.

We felt that all four nominees were prepared to show vulnerability in their answers.

Timmy Draper - recipient of the 2019 Matson and Allan Young Achiever Award - presented at the recent Courtenay A & P Show. keeping a job in a foreign country and starting a business from scratch, amongst other stories. The humility and maturity shown was quite unbelievable.

Here is some short information about the four candidates who were interviewed for the 2019 award. I couldn’t possibly do justice in words as to how well each candidate presented themselves.

Timmy Draper - Award Recipient.

Timmy blew the panel away with his candour, and his ability to solve problems. In being chosen as the 2019 recipient, the comment was made that he is exactly the person the award was started to recognise. From scratch he established his own mobile engineering business, making a conscious rule not to target the clients of his former boss, under whom he had served an apprenticeship. He talked about the personal enjoyment he gets from making others laugh, as the inspiration behind his popular social media videos. He was also a passionate

defender of the farming community, sharing his views and observations about the current political and social climate. In a letter to the panel, Timmy wrote, “to sum up I’m just a normal guy that wasn’t much good at school that made something of myself through taking a small gamble, hard work, and determination”.

Hannah Cossey - Hannah is a Youth Worker based in Darfield, playing an important community role through her mentorship of young people in the area.

Tim Wright - Tim spoke to us about his vision for the Rugby Club, to which he commits a significant amount of his time.

Away from the sporting arena, Tim spoke of his passion for farming, his love of family, and his commitment to contribute to the success of the family farming business post irrigation development.

Harriet Bond - Harriet brought an international flavour to the four nominees. She shared with the panel her ‘sinking’ experiences, from working in a New York café, to finding herself in Belgium working for a major multinational brewer.

On Monday, November 11th, thirteen teams of Year 4-6 students braved the cold Hororata Community Hall floor, to take part in the inaugural Malvern School’s STEAM Challenge. STEM/STEAM learning applies meaningful maths, science, and technology content to solve real-world problems through hands-on learning activities and creative design. Adding "A" to STEM includes art, as arts are a natural part of STEAM work.

Products and structures are built according to creative designs.

Scientific developments are explained through well-crafted communications.

Observing the theme of the competition, which was ‘Old School’, the challenge of the day was to construct a replica, steel framed, old school, chair.

Amusingly, in all the excitement of playing with newspaper, masking tape, Sellotape, plastic knives, forks and spoons, the key word ‘replica’ was lost and children resorted to constructing anything that had four legs and vaguely resembled something to sit on!

What emerged was a myriad of prototypes of what one might describe as mangled newspapers, strengthened with lashings of masking tape… the little brother of that kiwi favourite ‘duct tape’,

the everyday substitute for No. 8 wire.

When tested at ‘reckoning time’ an amazing twelve out of thirteen prototypes failed the ‘stand up for longer than twenty seconds test’ and one little beauty from Sheffield School, managed to hold six blocks before disintegrating.

Well done Harper, Harper Freddie, Freddie Beau and Millie from Sheffield who proved that from ‘little things big things grow’.

Before someone pens a letter of complaint to the Ministry of Education, we were forced to relax/loosen/abandon the criteria for replicas, height and design, pretty much because no one listened!

By relaxing the rules; we were presented with a great deal of

hope, that one of the designs would stand up by itself. We were thrilled with the efforts of the ‘Little Big Things’ from Sheffield.

Thanks to all those people who gave the little minds of Malvern the opportunity to shine. Whether you are the secretary who filled in the entry sheet, the Principal who passed on the email, or the parent who drove the taxi, you are the catalyst that brought like minds together and gave our children an opportunity to look at the world in a different way… thank you!

On Monday, November 18th years 4, 5 and 6 took part in the Malvern Twilight Athletics (the event for years 7 and 8 took place earlier in the month).

The event got underway in great conditions, albeit a bit chilly with the wind. “It was fantastic to see so many parents and whanau come along and show their support to the children competing,” Jayde Mayberry from the Selwyn Sports Trust commented. “Well done to all those who competed and good luck to those (from years 5-8) heading off to compete at the Canterbury Athletics.”
