The Butcher’s Pie is not only well-known in this area, but also much loved and from Wednesday, November 20th this popular pie brand is being shared with the City.

Butcher’s Pie owners Jarnia and Jason Kupe are only ‘sharing’ their much-enjoyed pie with Christchurch and they will still be available in this area exclusively at Darfield Challenge and the Willows Café, Glentunnel.

The Butcher’s Pie is now at Christchurch’s new Riverside Market, located by the Bridge of Remembrance in Central Christchurch City.

“The venue is proving to be a fantastic new attraction for foodies and tourists alike,” Jarnia explained. Seizing the opportunity to take their popular Butcher's Pie to Christchurch, Jarnia and Jason, who recently sold the Hororata Village Bar and Café business, now bake their famous pies at the Willows Cafe Glentunnel, located at the Hororata Golf Club.

Darfield resident John Knox, Knox in his capacity as a driver guide, recently escorted a small group of Singaporeans on a seven day tour around the South Island.

On the final day, and after the visitors had purchased many items of Manuka honey and skin care products in Ashburton, they asked John if he could show them a real Manuka tree on their way to Christchurch airport.

“As much as I tried, I couldn't see any growing along the way,” John commented, “but then I remembered I had planted some in our native garden at Landsborough in Darfield. We called by there, much to their delight. The red flowering Manuka tree (Leptospermum Scoparium - 'Red Damask') we

have in our garden, was in full bloom. The visitors got to see and photograph, plus smell the strong Manuka essential oil fragrance from the leaves,” John

concluded.

Definitely going the extra mile (pun intended) for New Zealand’s international visitors.

To the Editors: The Malvern Community Patrol are concerned that reducing police numbers in Darfield will impact on the effectiveness of coverage in this area. As Community Patrol Chairman I, along with Committee members met with Police District Commander John Price to voice concern over the non-replacement of a Darfield policeman. The Commander confirmed that the move to convert Rolleston Police station to 24/7 operation meant there were insufficient resources to cover the existing Darfield level of policing. The Community Patrol works closely with Darfield Police and the existing excellent relationship means Malvern has a very good community coverage, compared with some of the other Canterbury areas. A response time of some twenty minutes from Rolleston in an emergency would place Darfield at a significant disadvantage in terms of the policing the area is entitled to, while for areas such as Hororata, Sheffield, and Springfield the delay would be considerably more.

It would seem that a community response to protest against any local reduction in Police numbers is the only way we are going to be able to influence the ongoing protection of our community.

They confess to being excited about opening their very first Butcher's Pie Shop in the Laneways of Riverside Market.

“This has been a dream since the beginning of Pie making for Jason nine years ago,” said Jarnia. “He is a butcher by trade and butchers are so passionate about their quality and perfectionists about presentation,” she added.

“Now he’s the baker of Butcher's Pies, along with Marie Searle, Searle and the duo will take on a whole new team to help produce the pies needed to keep up with demand in Christchurch,” Jarnia reported.

After the successful Market last year, organiser Ainsley Burton of RejuvenateYou Hub at Springfield definitely wanted to do it all again.

It’s a chance to do some Christmas shopping, catch up with friends and neighbours and fully appreciate the skill and talent that goes into the production of many of the amazing goods on offer.

Ainsley commented that at the RejuvenateYou Hub she encourages people to find their Happy Place - what makes their heart sing, brings them joy and allows their passion to evolve.

“This is how and why we have creat ed our ‘C hr ist ma s Creations Market’, Ainsley explained. “We have organised Christmas Markets in previous years, but after watching and noticing many local talents evolve and seeing the change in lives after this, along with a sense of purpose; what better opportunity to showcase creators delights and give them an opportunity to shine,” Ainsley added.

Now a Windwhistle local, Amanda King lives with her husband (Fraser Fraser King) King on the King family farm with their two children Greta and Dudley. She is the creative force behind ‘By the Horns’ her business which creates fine art prints and canvases of rural animals, landscapes and seascape images. Amanda takes the photographs herself, completes any post production work, adds them to her profile and sells limited and unlimited edition prints through her online store, attracting customers worldwide.

She also supplies prints to selected retail stores in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

Amanda grew up in Australia and met her husband while in Croatia while they were both on their OE’s. She found her passion for photography while teaching for eleven years.

These Awards provide rural women business owners with an outstanding opportunity to showcase the diversity of their rural businesses. Rural Women New Zealand’s national president Fiona Gower said the standard of entries was high this year.

"Every one of the businesses who entered is a winner in their own right and the judges found it difficult to select the final category winners," she said.

One of the judges, Christina Chellew from sponsor NZI, said there was also a wide range of businesses. “The judges were highly impressed with the range and calibre of entrants in this year's awards, especially in the

two new categories - Bountiful Table and Rural Health and Wellbeing," she added. “It is especially pleasing that the award winners are located around the country with three from the South Island and four from the North Island,” she concluded.

A friend of Amanda’s Liv Nell recommended that she enter the Awards, before an interview by a panel of judges decided the category winners. Amanda understands these same judges also decide the grand overall winner, which will be announced at an Awards’ night. Amanda and Fraser will attend the Awards’ function in Wellington on Friday, November 22nd.

A new passenger service business has recently started in the Malvern District. Malvern Rides is run by rural Kirwee resident, Chris Peacock, Peacock to offer airport and city transfers around the district.

After spending the last year or so working on the complete restoration of an 1870’s house, Chris was on the hunt locally for a flexible, part-time job that would enable him to continue with the finishing touches on the building.

Paying an exorbitant amount for a taxi home from town one night, as well as experiencing pricey parking fees to park overnight at the airport, Chris felt there was a real need to provide affordable transport in the Malvern area.

Ch ri s u s es a mod er n, environmentally friendly, Toyota hybrid wagon and is fully NZTAendorsed to take up to four passengers. The service is not a 24/7 taxi service, but instead rides are pre-booked through a text message, email, or via the ‘Malvern Rides’ Facebook page.

UNDEDICATED ROADS IN COALGATE TOWNSHIP Selwyn District Council has identified a number of undedicated roads in Coalgate township.

These undedicated roads are specifically Queen Street, Station Road, High Street, Wing Street, King Street, James Street and unnamed roads intersecting Homebush Road and Bridge Street.

A plan of the undedicated roads is available at Darfield Library, online at yoursay.selwyn.govt.nz, or on request.

Without the status of a road, the legality of adjoining property access and future development rights are unable to be confirmed. The parcels of land are shown as road on survey plans but were not legally dedicated at the time of the original subdivisions in 1872 - 1906 and are still held in the original certificates of title and owned by the original owners, George Roberts, Joseph Shirley Buxton and William Attwood who are long since deceased.

Council proposes to acquire this land and declare it road to correct this historic oversight and cater for Coalgate’s transport, property access and development requirements. Council believes that this will benefit the community now and in the future. Council will acquire the land using the Public Works Act 1981.

Council would like to future proof the roading and public access network in the township by formalising and legalising these undedicated roads. A number of properties adjoining the undedicated roads are effectively landlocked and have no legal access to road. Declaring this land road will ensure that these properties have frontage to a legal road and have legal access. Some of the undedicated roads will also be used to develop local walking and cycling links in the township, and connections to the new Coalgate to Glentunnel pathway.

Council recognises that use or occupation of the undedicated roads by some Coalgate property owners has occurred over time and recognises the need to discuss what options may be available to resolve these types of situations.

The Property Group Limited has been engaged by Council to legalise these sections of road.

German Shepherd breeder, Lisa Amlehn from Coalgate has recently been successful at the German Shepherd Nationals held on November 2nd and 3rd.

The biennial event, alternating between North and South Islands, took place at the South Island German Shepherd arena, based in the Wigram A & P grounds. Dogs are judged on their construction, movement and temperament, as well as their height and dentition to meet the required breed standard.

Lisa’s family have always had German Shepherds and she bought her first, in 1990. This was followed in 1995 with a bitch puppy Genie (Unfehlbar Lambigeni) and much more of a foray into successful showing.

Also in 1995 Lisa bred her first litter under the New Zealand Kennel Club name ‘Reichhund’ continuing it to this day.

Unfortunately Lisa’s career as a jockey was terminated after a hand injury, but this allowed the opportunity for her love of dog showing to come to the fore.

Lisa’s day starts at 4:30am with, feeding, cleaning and exercising the dogs, as well as allowing time for their socialisation, loving and caring

for them. She then heads to the city for her job as a dog groomer. Lisa’s mum, Lori is home with the dogs during the day, before Lisa returns in the evening and follows the morning routine again!

Leading up to shows the dogs need to be worked to get them fit and in firm condition and of course they are regularly groomed.

“I would breed about three litters a year on average and only do so with the intention of keeping something from the litter to carry on my bloodlines,” Lisa explained. “Sadly you always have dogs getting older, so you need to have younger dogs coming on,” she added.

At the Show the dogs run in classes dependent on their sex, age and coat type. On the Saturday Lisa entered four males and one long stock coat (LSC) female. On Sunday she entered five stock coat (SC) females.

Lisa commented that none of her success would be achievable without the help from her mum Lori and all her friends, adding that the dogs were the love of her life!

LIKE IT OR NOT - URBAN URBAN EXPANSION IN SELWYN IS HAPPENING

By Anna Bensemann, Senior Planner, Baseline Group The population of the Selwyn District has been expanding consistently for many years, accelerated by the exit from Christchurch City in a postearthquake landscape. In order to provide for additional land to build subdivisions and houses, within and around townships, in Selwyn there has been a need to develop rural zoned land adjoining towns.

The process of rezoning land for urban expansion is complicated and time consuming, but ultimately provides for Selwyn’s small towns to grow and support additional business, boost school roles and encourage additional tourism to improve the local economy. Before such

Visitors were slow to arrive, but soon the numbers swelled with lots of children in tow it was reported. Families were happy to wander round the gardens and among the trees; mostly in the shade. As usual the quiz table was a winner - many of the visitors were there for the first time - and Kate Foster of the Terrace Station Charitable Trust was extremely busy with the sale of woodland plants. The shady parts of the lawns were a haven for picnics and cool drinks.

This is the last of Terrace Station’s open days this spring but the venue will be open next March and April to display an autumn perspective.

a rezoning can occur, a developer has to begin on a journey of research and investigation to make sure a site is appropriate.

Land developers undertake key investigations into infrastructure including water supply, sewer connections and stormwater disposal. Ultimately, they will be responsible for expanding the Council networks to install these services. They have to prove that the expansion of the system can occur and won’t overwhelm Council’s networks downstream.

Other investigations might include the effect a new household might have on an existing neighbour. Not all residential activities can be accommodated next door to a pig farm, other intensive farming activity, or industrial activities that create noise or dust in a lawful manner. The developer may have to consider setting residential sections back from these activities, or installing large fences or landscaping to avoid creating new conflicts.

The developer will have to consider the previous use of the site, ensuring historical activities like orchards and historical chemical sprays like DDT don’t result in long term contaminated soils.

Investigations need to be carried out by experts to make

sure a thorough investigation is completed and will include old sheep dips, fuel storage areas and engineering workshops where fuel and lubricants were used.

The developer will need to decide where the new roading network will go and what effect this will have on the current road network. Traffic experts are required to assess if there are any safety issues with additional traffic and the road layout, including the impact on schools and children accessing schools.

Once all the necessary investigations are complete an application to Council is made, which is publicly notified.

Anyone can make a submission in support, or opposition, to the proposed rezoning, which ensures the community can be involved in the decision making process.

Whether you support urban expansion, or not, a lot of research and investigation goes into determining the right areas for urban expansion to accommodate Selwyn’s ever growing population. Plan changes are subject to comprehensive scrutiny to not only make sure the area is right to support the growth of the townships, but also to ensure the layout, servicing, road network and historical use of the site are appropriately managed.

Glentunnel School held their It was reported that all students are already looking forward to annual Pet Day on Wednesday, had a fantastic day and many next year.

November 13th. It was a perfect day for students to enjoy a fun filled day outside the classroom.

Pupils could enter craft and hand writing classes, as well as the always popular pet classes.

Many other activities also took place on the day including a bouncy castle and a selection of stalls.

Later on the day’s agenda was the cake and hamper auction, which raised an amazing $3,200 towards the cost of Lachie and his dog at Glentunnel School Pet Day. School camp.

Glentunnel School sincerely thanks teacher aide Michele Reid who approached businesses for donated items to auction and they gratefully thank the thirty or so businesses who gave vouchers or goods to add to the cakes and hampers.

These items not only created an incentive to bid, but also helped raise what was an outstanding Jayden and Zac all dressed up enjoying Pet Day. total towards the student camp.

On November 2nd the fourth Dave Carr Memorial Run took place with a portion of it taking place in Kirwee. The charity truck run was set up in memory of a man whose passion for vehicles took him across New Zealand. Following his death at 57 from a heart attack, Dave’s friends, made from years of involvement in the trucking world, set up the memorial run as a fundraiser to help combat the disease that took his life.

The Marlborough father-ofthree spent his early career working for the railways in Blenheim, before moving to Dunedin and ult imat ely Canterbury.

Approximately fifty two trucks and a Denning Bus (luxury travel for those who wanted to attend, but didn’t have a truck) left the Highway Inn Truckstop

in Christchurch at around 9 am on November 2nd, visiting machinery collections on their way to Kirwee. Kirwee welcomed the convoy with a fantastic lineup of vehicles and another ten trucks to add to the travelling contingent.

“A big shout out to the Rowlands and Seaton families for hosting us at their properties,” commented one of the organisers.

“This has got to be my favourite event of the year by far and it is only the second time I've gone,” commented one enthusiastic attendee. “An absolute pearler of a day with great weather and a selection of trucks that blew my mind again. It was hard to know where to look there was

so much see!

“There were many familiar faces, some new ones and a few from the North Island also enjoying the day,” they reported.

After the Run everyone headed back to the Highway Inn where a charity auction was held . The Day raised an outstanding $ 7 , 4 0 0 f or t h e H e a rt Foundation.

Organisers thank the many businesses and individuals who donated items for the auction, as well as everyone that attended, or supported the event in any way.

Kirwee Model School (KMS) held their annual Pet Day on Wednesday, November 13th.

Children proudly led, carried or coaxed their animal friends along to School for a day that was a little different to the norm.

For children who were unable to bring along their pet, there were two new categories, pet rock or soft toy. Children shared their

knowledge with the judges about their pet and demonstrated the skills they had practised.

Indoor masterpieces were created at School before Pet Day and these included cupcake icing, vegetable sculptures, recycled material models, artworks and flower arrangements.

of special visitors into the School, enabling children to celebrate their hard work with extended family and friends.

Fancy dress parades completed the pet section of the day, with some exceptionally creative costumes on show, and this was followed by prize-giving.

The Friends of KMS held their annual cake auction at the event with the help of auctioneer Geoff Leathwick.

Leathwick The cakes were amazing, it was reported, with purchasers spoilt for choice. Cakes fetched premium prices resulting in the auction raising a whopping $2,300. Needless to say the Friends were extremely grateful to everyone involved.

The annual New Zealand Agriculture Show was held from November 13th - 15th at Canterbury Park in Christchurch. This Show is hosted by the Canterbury A & P Association, a charity whose aim is to promote the importance of farming, produce and innovation to New Zealand as a whole. The Association’s annual event is one of New Zealand’s oldest A & P Shows and remains a traditional agricultural Show at heart. It welcomes over 100,000 visitors through the gates every year.

Many Selwyn residents made the commitment and expended a huge amount of effort to attend the Show with a variety of exhibits. For these people the NZ Show is a calendar highlight. This year the weather p l a y ed b al l pr om p ti n g numerous locals to attend as spectators keen to see just what was on offer.

The event is described as having something for everyone with the Show containing a packed schedule of top livestock and equestrian events, live music, Endurocross, fun-filled family entertainment, an indulgent Food and Wine Village and so much more.

There were many awards and personal achievements gained by those from across Selwyn at the Show - but for those who weren’t recipients, just the fact of making it to the event and all the preparation that goes into that, is pretty prizeworthy too.

Begun as therapy after an injury these sculptures constructed from horseshoes by Andy Thompson of Kirwee were outstanding.

Both the horse and the NZ Agriculture Show 2019 ball were on display at the event.

Coalgate Bowling Club has recently had much to celebrate.

We have had a new artificial green laid which is getting better and better to play on, as it settles down with constant competition use. This has been a massive task for the Club, driven by a very supportive team, led by our green keeper, Micky Sayers, myself, and a team of assistants. I believe this green will allow us the opportunity to grow our Club, that wasn’t there before.

To add to this success, is the selection of all three of our Development ladies, Deb Creelmen, Creelmen Tracy Fickling and Glenda VanHerpt, VanHerpt in the Canterbury Country Development team, to play Canterbury Town. A development player is someone who is in their first five years of playing our game. It is a massive accomplishment by all three women to be selected to this team and shows the commitment

to developing their games to a high level of skill. This was the first time either Glenda or Tracy had made this team, and they said it was great to have the opportunity to play against such quality opposition. Although they didn’t have a win on the day, they all played some great bowls, and enjoyed the experience, with all three being re-selected to play at Timaru in December.

Giving our Club even more to celebrate has been the selection of Tracy to the Canterbury Development team to play Marlborough at Kaikoura. Tracy is a third year bowler who initially didn’t want to play the sport, but was pushed into it by husband, Les. Les Reluctantly she had a go, and has now become somewhat addicted.

Tracy commented that she is incredibly excited and proud to get this chance to represent Canterbury and Coalgate in this

event.

As a Club we invite all to have a go at playing our game. We welcome new players with, or without, experience to come along and have a no obligation game, with some coaching and encouragement along the way.

HAY BALING The Malvern Lawn Bowls season got under way with the Men’s Triples Qualifying rounds being held on Sunday, November 10th and Finals Sunday, November 17th, at Oxford.

“A new format tried this year produce d new winners,” reported secretary of Malvern Sub-Centre Bowls, Wendy Clucas.

Clucas “This year the Triples Event was open to men only as women have their own Malvern Triples competition,” she explained.

“The main change was that rather than playing fourteen ends per game competitors were divided up to play two sets of seven ends with a Power Play available to each team per set.

This is similar to that seen on television as Bowls 3 Five,” Wendy said. “The Final saw a close competition with excellent bowls and all players appeared

to be happy with the concept which is hoped will continue,” she finished.

At the Malvern Netball Centre AGM on Monday, November 18th two prestigious awards were presented; a Life Membership Award to Lorraine Strowger and a Service Award to Vanessa Moore.

Prior to this meeting there have only been three Service Awards presented to Malvern Netball Members, Adele Davidson, Lorraine Strowger and Jan Thomas. Lorraine is the first to receive a Life Membership Award.

The 2019 season has been a big one for Malvern Hockey with a number of significant events taking place, all with the intention of keeping the game growing in the area.

In February Malvern Hockey were the recipients of a significant amount of sponsored gear which included brand new sticks and bags. This equipment is to help build junior teams so that no one needs to miss out on playing hockey due to a lack of equipment. Needless to say, Malvern Hockey were extremely grateful for this generous gesture.

The next major event was in March when a Masters Women’s Team travelled to Hamilton to compete in the National Masters’ Tournament. This was the first time in twenty years a Malvern Senior Women’s Team has competed in a National Competition. The team did well and finished with a wonderful third placing! Malvern Hockey hopes to replicate this success with a team to attend the 2020 tournament, which is to be held in Christchurch. The two senior teams were both in fine form this season, especially the Mid Week Open Women’s Team; winning their division for the first time ever. The Div 2 Men’s team had a rocky start to the season, but settled in and had some good matches and results later on.

This year Malvern had two Junior six-aside Girls’ teams

playing in the CHA Competition and Malvern Hockey officials commented that it was great to see so many new faces giving it a go. It was reported that there were some hard losses, but then came some exciting wins and goals, by the end of the season.

Malvern also offered junior after school trainings in Term 1 and these attracted a huge response and turnout, before term 2 saw Mini’s training.

These well attended sessions were both made possible by the donation of equipment from two supportive businesses.

“We are only a small Club and this help is vital for us to provide hockey, so please do take a look at our sponsors’ page and when possible show them some thanks,” said Nicolle Hughes spokesperson for Malvern Hockey.

Malvern Hockey thanks Canterbury Hockey Association (CHA) who not only provided a great competition format for 2019, but also gave the Club some wonderful support. CHA have been doing a large amount of work in a number of local schools, which Malvern reports is really assisting with the growth of the game in the area.
