Local and ex-local families have been enjoying some outstanding results on the New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour. Harry, Harry Will and Joe Cookson, Cookson Poppy and Tom Freeman, Freeman Obie Simper, Simper Toby and Fletcher Thwaites and ex locals Sam and Ruby Hewitt (who now live on the West Coast) along with Mari and Hamish Henderson have been travelling around the country competing on the Tour. These skiers, ranging in age from eight to sixteen, are all part of the Mt Olympus Freeride Team. The New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour is a Freeride event run by Dion Newport who is the top international judge on the Freeride World Tour. It involves big mountain skiing where the competitors are required to ski a run, on offpiste reasonably steep terrain. They are usually only allowed a visual inspection before skiing. They are judged on control, line choice, technique and fluidity, as well as air and style. The New Zealand JFT has three stops on the tour, The Remarkables, Mt Olympus and Turoa (MT Ruapehu) on consecutive weekends in September; making for a

reasonable amount of travelling across the country! The Cookson boys started skiing at about three years old and have been avid skiers ever since, commented their mum Lucy Cookson. “Harry is lucky enough to be travelling to Europe in January to compete in France and Switzerland,” Lucy explained. “His ultimate goal is to qualify and compete in the Junior World Champs in a couple of years so this trip is to help him develop his skills and compete against other Juniors in Europe. He is lucky enough to have support from Gnomes Alpine Sports and Atomic, but is frantically saving for this trip,” Lucy reported. “The other two boys have similar goals but being a little younger are a wee way off this yet,” she commented proudly. “I’m really looking forward to heading overseas this January

Signage from earlier days - clearly seen on the wall exposed by the removal of the adjoining block of shops on Darfield’s main street. Jack Rich’s Shop began in Mathias Street, near the railway line (the site of the Moore Builders’ premises) before moving to a main street location around 1964. The Shop sold paint and hardware (Jack was a painter and decorator) then branched out into giftware, toys, fishing equipment and sports goods. The shop was substantially increased in size to accommodate the extra wares on sale and provided service to the township for many years, before continuing under changed ownership. Jack, who played cricket for Greendale, has no family remaining in the area.

When Jack Rich’s Shop vacated its Mathias Street premises, Darfield Drapery under the ownership of Maurice and Margaret Lee began to trade from the building. In due course they moved to another bigger shop at the western end of South Terrace, before eventually occupying the much larger shop that had been home once again to Jack Rich’s Store. The current building owners and owners of the new Darfield Four Square supermarket, Delwyn and Kelvin Taege plan to retain the Jack Rich’s shop building and refurbish it in preparation for new, future tenants.

ANNABEL’S EDUCARE & 3 YR & 4 YR OLD KINDERGARTENS The game took place on Sunday, September 29th in Brisbane’s Dolphin Stadium. The Kiwi U19s had only had five days together prior to the game, and while they fought hard against a well drilled Australian team unfortunately didn’t come away with the win. “Jordan showed great leadership of the squad during a very tense and well contested match,” commented Janelle proudly. At just nineteen years old, Jordan has been a full time player as part of the Brisbane Broncos wider training squad this year, and in their top 36. He played for the Norths Devils (a Bronco's feeder Club) in the Intertrust Super Cup competition and they finished fifth this season. Jordan has currently just started his offseason break and will return home for some much needed R and R before starting preseason training on November 1st back in Brisbane. Jordan’s next goal is to gain a spot in the top thirty Broncos squad, plus have a great season for the Norths Devils in 2020. “He loves living in Brisbane and being part of the Broncos and is looking forward to 2020,” Janelle concluded. Definitely a name to watch for in the future.

The Hororata Parish Spring Fair has been part of the Hororata landscape for many years and will again challenge blokes on their #8 wire skills. The Spring Fair is about more than just raising money, it is about raising community spirits and providing a fun family day out for all it is reported. The Country Auction has been a highlight of the Fair for over ten years, but for the second time only, the challenge has been laid down to the men, blokes and Trevs living within the Hororata Parish to showcase their #8 wire skills and build their entry for the Agri Garden Art competition. “Last year we had eight entries and they raised over $1,350, such was the craftsmanship and imagination of these clever locals,” commented committee member Yvonne Cookson. Cookson “Last year’s entries used saw blades, horse shoes, truck springs, hay rake tines and #8 wire like never seen before, then add to this discs, chains, bolts, sumps, scissors, gears, fence posts, rail sleepers and more. The addition of the #8 wire challenge to the auction last year was really fun and we’d really encourage even more people to enter this year,” Yvonne added. “This year the challenge is about recycling posts, wood, timber you know, that stuff lying around in and around the sheds,” she laughed. “Entries are voted on by the public during the Fair and

HORORATA HISTORIC WALKING TRAIL Sunday 13th & 27th October 2019 (Weather permitting)  Starting at St John’s Church Cars can be parked near the Church, and after tea or coffee at the museum, walkers will be returned to the car park by classic car.

As part of the Beca Christchurch Heritage Festival the Hororata Historical Society will be hosting a Walking Trail on two Sundays in October, weather permitting. The walk starts at the historic St John’s Church and Graveyard and continues through the Hororata Domain and the main street of Hororata to the Hororata Museum and Coton’s Cottage. A brochure available to walkers has a map, illustrations and descriptions of the historic points of interest along the way. Some of these include the Hororata Hall designed by Samuel Hurst Seager and the home of Truman Jones famous for his association with traction engines, as well as the old stores and the blacksmiths. The Domain is one of Canterbury’s best kept secrets and the walk follows sign posted tracks to help walkers follow the trail which is guided if needed, but can easily be walked independently.

The walk takes approximately one and a half to two hours, easy walking; is push chair friendly and suitable for all levels of fitness. Cars can be parked near the Church and after tea or coffee at the Hororata Museum, walkers will be returned to the car park by classic car. The ongoing restoration of Coton’s Cottage can also be seen.

This Saturday is the deadline for local election voting with votes to be received by Council before midday, Saturday, October 12th. This means the only option now, at this late stage, is to drop voting papers in to the Council offices in Rolleston, or one of Selwyn’s libraries or Council facilities. There are ballot box locations across the District (Council’s Rolleston offices, at the Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln and Rolleston libraries, Selwyn Aquatic Centre, Lincoln Event Centre and West Melton Community Centre) during normal opening hours all week, and on the final Saturday up to 12 midday. “Local elections are an important way for people to have a say on issues that are crucial in their local communities, and on how services and facilities are planned and developed for the future,” said deputy electoral officer, Stephen Hill. Hill Preliminary results for the Selwyn elections are expected to be available late Saturday afternoon, and will be published on the Council website as soon as they are available. September was a busy month for all gymnastic clubs throughout the South Island and none more so than the West Melton one. In the past month they have attended four gym n a st ic c o mp e ti t io n s, travelling to Hokitika, Kaikoura and Ashburton (twice) to do so. That meant each weekend there were early starts, late finishes and very tired gymnasts. “We are extremely proud of all our gymnasts,” said Club spokesperson Pam Higgins. Higgins “Everyone puts so much effort and en ergy int o th ei r gymnastics, with the result they produced some well polished routines,” she said. “We had some amazing results throughout the four competitions with 43 medals being won by our gymnasts. This was made up of nineteen Gold, fifteen Silver and nine Bronze,” Pam explained. “A special mention goes to Shelby Miller and Brooke McEvoy who attended all four competitions and achieved medal winning performances at all four,” Pam added. Shelby was presented with two Golds and two Silvers in the Iron level, while Brooke was awarded three Golds and one Silver in the Bronze level.

The competition season continues right through to December with the last one being the Christmas Competition which is hosted by Christchurch School of Gymnastics. “Attending competitions is one

of the highlights for our gymnasts each year. It is a chance to have something to work towards, gain confidence, meet new friends and challenge themselves,” Pam ended.

Around a hundred firefighters, families and officials attended the annual Darfield Fire Brigade Awards, held at the Darfield Recreation Centre on Saturday, October 7th. Following the Brigade Awards the evening was a special recognition for Firefighter and long serving Brigade member Terry Hutchinson. Hutchinson Terry was awarded his twenty five year Gold Star for service and commitment to fire and emergency services. “Terry is a popular member of our Brigade. It was a huge pleasure to see him recognised for the great effort he has contributed to the Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade and also the Darfield Community,” commented Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Office Alan Kittelty. Small Strokes Synchro Club recently competed in the New Zealand National Championships held in the Moana Pool, Dunedin on September 29th. The Club sent its biggest team yet, and with five girls in New Zealand squads this year, their impressive results reflected this. Small Strokes Free Open Combination team not only performed extremely well, but also received a fourth placing. “Additionally we managed some interesting sightseeing for the girls including the Butterfly house in Dunedin and playing tag on the castle on the way home,” reported Small Strokes owner and Head Coach Joan Billings. Billings “Overall our coaches, Emma Hawkins, Hawkins Leticia Hart, Hart Chantelle Padget and I, have worked hard with the girls this year and these results reflect the effort put in by all,” Joan explained. “Big contributors to a successful trip were our bus company with Nicola the awesome driver who helped the girls with all sorts of other jobs, Tina our camp mother who sorted all our meals; a definite necessity, and our wonderful Club Manager AnneAnne -Maree Ward who made all our arrangements,” Joan concluded.

Over the weekend of September 28th/29th nine cadets from Darfield St John Youth division represented Mid Canterbury at the South Island regional competitions, held in Hanmer. It was reported that this was a busy weekend for all who attended with competitors having to complete a number of scenarios. They were required to respond to both medical and trauma first-aid situations both in teams and as individuals.

Those attending also competed in drill and a written test, along with a communication test, during the course of the weekend. “There was a high calibre of skill displayed over the weekend, across all those competing,” said Victoria Tomes, Tomes the Divisional Manager, Darfield Youth Division. “Our cadets did very well to achieve the results they did.” The Darfield St John Youth

Competing as a Senior Individual - Jenny Walter with her first placed Trauma 2 plaque and certificate for achieving Excellence at LDT Camp (leadership development training ) earnt earlier in the year while training for her cadet leader rank. Exploring with found materials is is about highlighting the mission something that was an important creative activity to develop our skills as children. This act not only taught us methodology for problem solving and design thinking but also how to imagine. Sew Delightful of Darfield are recreating that environment for the wider community by using found and donated materials to recycle, repurpose and reuse into wonderful creations. “As items come through the door we spend time looking at them then create something of use from them,” said Elizabeth Connor one of the members of Darfield’s Sew Delightful. One of the wonderful projects that is being completed is the 4KT project which originated from Dunedin. The 4KT project

to transform Dunedin's clothing and textile waste into 4000+ soft toy elephants. Each elephant represents a ton of textile received by Dunedin Landfill last year which significantly contributes to C02 emissions. From elephants to bunting, tote bags to dishcloths and even handbags, this delightful community sewing room is really doing a great job at connecting community while promoting environmental awareness and encouraging creative expression. On September 27th the Darfield Bridge Club held its annual Spring Charity Bridge Tournament at the Darfield Recreation Centre. One hundred people attended the event hailing from all over Canterbury and enjoyed a very successful day. The season opening for the Malvern Bowling Sub-Centre, comprising of West Melton, Darfield, Coalgate, Oxford and Kirwee Bowling Clubs, was to be held on Saturday, October 5th at Kirwee. “Players from all those clubs were present on the day, at the right place and the right time, ready to play for the coveted Mary Macartney Cup - except that the heavy southerly rain had made that impossible by soaking the green that morning,” reported Marian Galloway of the Kirwee Club. “Play was off, but the Kirwee folk made the visitors welcome in their agreeably warm Clubhouse,” Marian added. Do I actually need a computer?…. Short answer is maybe. Definitely no if the man from Microsoft/Police/IRD rings up and says that you have been sending viruses out to people. You say, ‘I don’t own a computer’. Yes if you want to do more than look at the internet and Facebook. Your PC, Desktop or Laptop does many things better than a smart phone, or tablet. It will create and store your documents easily so that they can be found without difficulty; including photos, documents, and other personal files. Editing of those pics and files is so much easier on a desktop, because of its size. The PC will also print them easily with many more options for you. Your PC can store your emails on your computer for you if you need to use email when you aren’t able to connect to the internet. Don’t get me wrong Tablets and phones have their place it’s just that it’s limited. Try creating a document on a smart phone. Not easy, as well as cutting and pasting…too hard. You don’t have to buy fancy connection cables to get your TV, or big computer screen, working from your PC - you just plug it in then you can have access to it for the size. As well you can extend it, instead of duplicate it, and you have double the space to visualise what you need to do. Costs are pretty even for quality tablets and phones, so cost shouldn’t be a deciding factor when choosing what things they can do. Just decide exactly what you need it for!

Follow the Sustainability Trail in November; Lincoln Envirotown is urging people not to throw away broken or torn things. This is because a Repair Café will feature in their November Trail. People are asked to hang on to those household items, appliances, toys, bicycles or clothing which might be repaired instead of going to landfill and bring them to the Repair Café for mending or advice. “The Repair Café is one of a number of events planned for early November as part of the exciting ‘Trail’,” explained Dave Fitzjohn, Fitzjohn Project Manager, Lincoln Envirotown Trust. The programme shown, sees all the events planned with environment and sustainability as a central theme. “There is something for everyone,” Dave added. “For those who prefer outings there are trips to a sustainable winery or the Ecodrop, while some may wish to learn skills such as making sustainable household products, or growing their own vegetables,” he said. “For those who just want to enjoy and learn something of the outdoors,

there will be a guided walk around Lincoln’s Mahoe Native Reserve,” Dave commented. Events taking place on the Sustainability Train during November: Zero Waste Road Trip - Lincoln: Minibus from Lincoln to tour the EcoDrop Centre at Parkhouse Road, Wigram. Two photos tell the story of the transformational difference that a business initiative undertaken with Lincoln Envirotown have made to the grounds of Selwyn’s Primary Schools over the five year span of the project. The first image depicts Weedons’ student Sharria Rangihuna attending the planting of the first tree with then Deputy Selwyn Mayor Sarah Walters and the driving force behind the initiative, Alan Peacock from Independent Signs, the second picture shows Sharria and Alan beneath the same tree, five years on. Five years ago during a visit by a

Responsible Business Coordinator from Lincoln Envirotown, Alan voiced the idea of an initiative to put fruit trees into the Primary Schools of Selwyn District. He gathered together a group of businesses who were willing to support such an initiative, sponsoring up to ten trees for each school, every year. He was motivated by a desire to enhance not only the school environments, but also to see students learning about healthy home-grown food. He also foresaw the fruit freely produced helping school members and the wider

community. An important partner in the project was Aaron Bartlett whose company ‘The Outdoor Space’ undertook to deliver the trees purchased, and advise the students on their planting. The students played a significant role in determining the placing, planting and use of the fruit in years to come. “Most of our Primary Schools have benefitted immensely from this undertaking including new schools that came into existence after 2015 when it all started,” said Dave Fitzjohn, Fitzjohn Project Manager, Lincoln Envirotown.

This compeFFon again will be hotly contested amongst the eight compeFng teams. Two full rounds are followed by semis and then a ﬁnal. Here is how Darﬁeld are shaping up for the coming season:

Darfield up until a month ago were destined to be playing senior grade cricket in the 2019/20 season after finishing in last place in 2018/19. Kaiapoi’s late withdrawal have thrown Darfield a lifeline which they’ll be hoping to grab with both hands. For the lateness of the notification that they were going to be in the Premier competition they have done an outstanding job to pull together a good squad of players to go into the season with. Captain Michael Pauling returns to lead the team and he will have other experienced campaigners such as Nick Jenkins and Dave Beatty to lean on throughout the season. Liam Foulkes will return in good form from a winter in the UK, his off-spin will be crucial to Darfield’s results again this season. Darfield will be hoping that keeper-batsmen Alister Collins will find some good form with the bat and behind the stumps. Key Players: Darfield will be looking forward to the second part of the season when young guns Jesse Frew and Ryan Hughes will join their squad. Jesse is hopeful of making the NZ U19s and Ryan is an outside chance of making the Canterbury U19s. Both are potential match winners with both bat and ball. Michael McCaughan will bolster Darfield’s pace bowling stocks as he returns to the Darfield Club after a period with Riccarton.
