Darfield High School student Harriet Collins (aged 12) has just won the Snowsports New Zealand South Island Giant Slalom (GS) Inter Field Championships held at Mt Hutt.

Harriet has also competed in the inter field races held at Porters and Rainbow ski areas placing well in both.

This year the racing at Mt Hutt had to be jammed into one day instead of two due to bad weather; an occupational hazard in seasonal events such as this. Harriet won both of her under 14 female GS races with times of 32.23 and 32.15, and also won her first Slalom race with a time of 40.30.

Unfortunately in the second race Harriet chose to challenge herself, pushed it to the limit, and missed a gate.

Harriet starting skiing at Porters Ski area when she was eighteen months old and by the age of four could ski from the top of the mountain. Backcountry skiing followed soon after, and was something she was enjoying from the age of six.

Harriet has previously raced in

the Darfield Primary School team at the Porters’ Local Primary and Intermediate Derby ski races with success both individually, and in the team competition. This year she raced for Darfield High School and came away named as the fastest year 7/8 girl!

Harriet’s success has come from a lot of dedicated training throughout the years. She has had ski lessons with her school every year and last year she attended race training with the Po rt e r s’ R ac e T r a i n i ng Academy. This season she joined Simon Brown and his Elite Sport Alpine Ski Racing Academy also based at Porters.

This is where she has been lucky enough to train beside some of New Zealand’s top ski racers in their age group.

Harriet has had over thirty days of training this season including a week of downhill training at Rainbow, with some days requiring her to be on the snow by 7am!

“She has proven that she is super motivated and truly passionate about ski racing and furthering her skills,” said proud dad, Jason Collins.

Collins Harriet is extremely grateful to those who have assisted her with a variety of support including the Malvern Lions Club and Porters General Manager,

Uli Dinsenbacher who personally sponsored ski equipment.

“Next year Harriet will need to obtain full sponsorship/funding to pay for her training,” Jason explained. “Her love and passion for race skiing is however definitely evident as her school speech about making it to the Olympics testifies,” Jason concluded.

In August 2018 then five year old, Selwyn resident, Nora was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, cancer of the liver that only occurs in one in one million people. Unfortunately Nora's cancer was also found to be in her lungs. Over the last fourteen months Nora has gone through nine rounds of chemotherapy which has caused all the usual side effects, but also caused permanent hearing loss. She has had three surgeries including removing 60% of her liver, her gallbladder and half of one lung. Nora now has over 850 beads of courage. Her wee body is covered in scars that tell the story of her journey; her fight.

It was found the likely cause of Nora's cancer was a TP53 gene mutation; this gene helps suppress the growth of tumours. This now makes her susceptible to a large number of cancers at much higher risk than the general population.

Heartbreakingly, Nora's Dad and her little three year old sister have also been found to have this gene mutation and are now undergoing testing for cancer.

Nora's liver remains cancer free but the disease in her lungs is proving to be stubborn. At the age of six, Nora has exhausted all the curative treatments available in New Zealand, but has been accepted into a CAR T cell trial in Texas which is her last chance for a cure. To simplify this cutting-edge

technology: T-cells are taken from removed patient’s blood, the CAR gene is manufactured in a lab and inserted into these T-cells, millions more are then grown in the lab, before infusing them into the patient. The CAR T cells bind themselves to the cancerous cells and kill them.

This trial treatment is partly funded, but Nora and her family need the community’s assistance with the rest. The costs including the unfunded portion, accommodation and flights is estimated at $140,000 NZD for her/family for up to nine weeks in Texas.

“This treatment has the ability to cure Nora once and for all,” her mother explained.

Nora’s family are desperate to make this happen, but they can’t do it alone.

“It takes a village to raise a child, and sometimes it takes an army to save one. We need an army!” Nora’s mum said.

If things change and the family no longer require the money they would use some of the funds raised to make Nora’s last days amazing, before creating a charity in her name to assist families with cancer.

Sirens sounded and the community flocked to Darfield Fire Station for the Brigade’s open day held on Saturday, September 21st.

“The weather was fantastic and the event attracted a large number of people / families,” reported Chief Fire Officer, Alan Kittelty.

Kittelty As well as fun and food there was a serious aspect to the event also.

“We provided many people with Home Fire Safety advice,” Alan said. “The Community Patrol was in attendance and the Community Response Team provided information regarding preparedness for an emergency,” he added.

Needless to say the always popular barbecue was once again and children just couldn’t believe their eyes at the chance to get up close to the fire equipment present at the event.

“On display were appliances and equipment from both Urban and Rural Fire teams,” Alan explained.

"It was a very successful day and it was great to see so many families come and enjoy it with us," he said.

The annual Country Fair and Craft day takes place on the last Saturday of the month, September 28th in the grounds of Trinity Church, Darfield. The Fair runs from 9am to 1pm, with market stalls both indoors and outdoors. There will be a baked goods table, crafts, food, furniture, pottery, antique stalls, wool and knitted apparel, along with honey, toys, and plants.

To the Editors: Congratulations to Coral Bramley. I totally agree with her. The Council should be supporting local businesses, not falling over backwards to help set-up another totally unnecessary competitor.

The Sicon building was only eighteen years old and could have been put to far better use for the benefit of the local community, as could the houses in Ritso Street.

This area has a need for more affordable housing for elderly people who need to live closer to shops and other amenities. That great opportunity has now been thrown away and to me this whole deal has a very funny smell!

Regarding the $90 million going into Rolleston. The Mayor has stated that Rolleston needs the extra money spent there, because, ‘it has no soul’. Abraham Lincoln said, “you do not help a man permanently by doing for him that which he should do for himself.” Providing money and amenities will not give any community ‘a soul’.

Lakeside has ‘a soul’. That little community raised the money and supplied voluntary labour to rebuild their Hall which was destroyed by the earthquake. Those people are the ‘soul’ of Lakeside and full credit to them.

The problem I see with the present Council is that the tail seems to be wagging the dog. Under Bill Woods’ previous tenure the staff number was a fraction of what it is today, the Sicon building was erected, miles of new road was tar sealed and there were no rate increases!

Maybe it is time we gave Bill another go.

It would take some tail to wag that old dog!

On Sunday, September 22nd Malvern School of Music held their 32nd annual concert with pupils playing and singing to a packed audience in the Darfield High School Hall. The Malvern School of Music has eighty six students taught by seven tutors.

The standard of performance by all students was a credit to these tutors. The audience enjoyed guitar, banjo, and vocal items by pupils of Liz Nichols’, Nichols some accomplished drum playing by pupils of Zak Williams, Williams great keyboard and piano playing by pupils of Adele Langlands, Langlands and very polished items by Helen Langen and Ray

McMurdo’s McMurdo guitar pupils. Then twenty nine recorders and violins tutored by Pauline Sewell, Sewell was a great way to conclude the first half.

The second half of the concert started with the adult ukulele group, under Adele Langlands’ leadership with a Country Medley. The Concert always finishes with an orchestra item to give pupils and other local

guests an opportunity to play together under a conductor.

“We were very lucky this year to have Peter Van Siclen conduct us in a piece of music arranged

by Helen Langen called Mr Mercury’s Magic,” reported Pauline Sewell of Malvern School of Music. “Playing some Queen tunes together was enjoyed by all,” Pauline concluded.

On Sunday, September 22nd the Rescue Crew Challenge entitled, ‘A Day in the Life of a Paramedic,’ was held at the Garden City Helicopters Aviation Air Centre in Christchurch. Local Bayleys Real Estate agent Craig Blackburn and the Bayleys team consisting of Louise Sams, Sams Kayla Dynes and Paul Willetts took on this challenge to help raise much needed funds for the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue.

Nineteen teams ended up competing on the day, going in either a clockwise or anticlockwise rotation system around the set activities. A unique way of recognising the fundraising total and the points achieved during the challenge was by adding millilitres of water to a pail. The fuller the pails, the more achieved. Team Bayleys demonstrated their expertise in the set challenges, only having one loss which was in the chocolate challenge (who could possibly lose in that one?!!).

Teams had to compete in a wide variety of challenges from carrying a mannikin on a stretcher, to putting up a tent in what was meant to be heavy rain (children with water pistols). Each team member also had to perform CPR for one minute correctly and find transponders hidden under dinner plates on the field, and that was just a few of the activities th at r equire d completion.

Craig reported that the stretcher carrying a mannikin was probably the hardest activity due to the mannikin being extremely heavy.

The day was reported to be a lot of fun, but also hard work at the same time.

“It was a very well organised day and raised funds for such a vital part of the community,” Craig explained.

Overall winners from the Challenge were named as the EQC Settlers, while the Casino team raised the most funds with a total of $16,222, second was the Westpac Ball of Duty with $10,900 and team Bayleys came in at third with $10,467.

Air Rescue who received an amazing $100,442,” Craig said.

“Everyone connected with team Bayleys thank all those who

donated, or supported the team in any way, as well as this va lu ab l e as s et to t h e community,” Craig concluded.

A touch of magic has descended on McHugh’s Forest.

Blown in by the nor’west wind a magical community has moved into the Forest near Darfield just in time for the school holidays.

A short distance down the road in Greendale there lives another family of Fairies in Adam’s Arboretum. These Fairies came to the McHugh’s Fairies rescue not so long ago when the evil Goblins tried to take over McHugh’s Forest to chop down all the trees for firewood.

So tells part of the story written

by John Feeney, Feeney which he hopes to have available as a book in the near future.

“I've aimed the fairy tale at small children with editing assistance from my UK based mum, who is a retired school teacher, to make the wording age appropriate,” John explained. “I'm more used to writing engineering manuals and University papers. The story is also geographically and meteorologically accurate if anyone wants to visit the landmarks mentioned.

“I am however searching for a skilled illustrator to bring my story to life,” John added.

From Friday, September 27th families can step into McHugh’s Forest and explore its enchanted world with twenty magic doors hidden in the Forest for children (and the young at heart) to find.

“Look out for the signs and see who can spot the dragon sleeping,” SDC community services staff member Kelsey Waghorn said.

“The magical community will also be stepping out of the Forest to support a Fairie Party at Darfield Library on Friday, October 4th from mid-morning till lunchtime where there will be dancing, face painting, and a

treasure hunt,” Kelsey said.

“Selwyn District Council have worked with the Darfield Menz Shed, who generously put in many hours of effort to build and decorate the doors.

“The idea had been used internationally and in other Canterbury districts, but with the creative genius of the men at Menz Shed it has been adapted to something special for Selwyn,” Kelsey enthused. “It is a simple way to light up the holidays for parents and children and it’s already been bringing a lot of fun.

“The doors bring a bit of joy in a different way and give people another reason to visit one of the many, really cool, outdoor spots that Selwyn has to offer.

“Everyone who’s worked on the project, or we’ve talked to about it, has commented that it’s just sparked a memory and we’re hoping that will carry on through the holidays.”

To help the magical creatures feel welcome and stay, Kelsey commented that it is important for visitors to respect their

space and take only photographs and leave only footprints.

“For those who do take photographs Darfield Library will print these for free to mount on a screen of the community photo board in the Library, with a copy to take home to remember your magical journey,” Kelsey ended.

Friday 27th September 2019 Last week was the re-opening of the GAS station at Hororata after they were ram raided in February 2018. There have been many positive comments about the Shop with customers commenting that it looks great and is warm and welcoming.

On Sunday, September 22nd the Courtenay A & P Association ran a flower and vegetable staging and presentation workshop. The aim of the workshop was to give people tips and tricks on how to get the best out of presenting their exhibits in the Show, along with some inspiration.

Top Tips on flower arrangements gained at the afternoon: • Work on the ratio of ⅓ vase height to ⅔ arrangement height.

• Spiral the stems in the bouquet and it will hold together nicely.

• Use items such as gum-nuts and mini-pinecones to give texture to designs.

• Flax can be easily stapled into a design to add interest.

• Don’t be afraid to use dried flowers or foliage, along with fresh.

Top Tips on Staging Singular flowers: • Leave four leaves on a stem for roses.

• Clean the leaves with Vaseline, or milk, to make them shine.

• Use foam, or paper, to make the flower stand upright in the vase and aim for 1½ height of the vase.

• Freshness, bloom and staging are all things the flower will be judged on.

It was close game against a talented Rolleston side and with seconds to go the score was 30-all. Goal Attack, Bianca Duncan was awarded a penalty right on full-time; her shot was successful which gave the team the win. The entire team worked extremely well throughout the match which not only made team management very proud, but also led them to comment that the team had in fact worked hard all season.

Malvern had five teams playing in the Selwyn Competition this year, with four teams making semi-finals and two going through to finals day.

On a stunning Spring afternoon we held our annual Spring show with David Taylor and Bill Girl doing the honours as judges and guest speakers. They certainly had their work cut out as the tables were laden with blooms from daffodils, to branches of blossoms. Premier bloom was awarded to Jackie Hill, Hill Premier Daffodil to Barbara Roberts, Roberts Open Decorative and Cut Flowers - Barbara Roberts and Novice Decorative - Doreen Moore.

Moore Congratulations to all. David and Bill then went on to advise us on the staging of exhibits, telling us how to present flowers to their best advantage. Presenting flowers in a good upright position and making sure petals are displayed to look their best; a few useful tips were picked up - never too old to learn. Well folks this is my last report on behalf of Garden Club, having recently moved to the City, I won’t be attending as often as in the past, but member Lee Stokes has taken over the pencil and will do a good job. Thanks for reading my ramblings for all the years I have undertaken this job, I have loved every minute of it, and thanks to the team at the News for printing our reports.
