Last Wednesday, September 11th saw fourteen teams of local primary and intermediate aged students battle it out in the annual Dynastar Local Schools’ Ski Derby, held at Porters’ Ski Area. Great weather and the best snow conditions seen in years made for an action-packed day of racing. Supported enthusiastically by parents and teachers, the young ski racers competed for team and individual prizes, medals and trophies. Every competitor was acknowledged with a certificate of participation. This annual event

is sponsored by Gerald and Vivien Ottowa of Bobo Products, importers of Dynastar Skis and Lange boots. Their continued generosity is much appreciated.

The GS ski race course was set on the groomed Easy Street slope by the Porters Snow Sports School. It was most rewarding to see students who have learnt to ski at Porters during school programmes and ski days returning to represent their schools.

Congratulations to all the competitors and we look forward to seeing you next year.

Please be aware of telephone scams which have been around for years and are still doing the rounds locally. Some of these scams involve overseas sounding people calling home owners stating that they are from Spark or Microsoft. The scammers can be very convincing and polite on the phone.

Sometimes these scammers can get away with transferring thousands of dollars from your bank accounts when you unwittingly pass on these details to an unknown scammer who has called you on your telephone.

In recent months some local folk have been caught out purchasing items from unknown people over the Facebook social media site. You should be very wary about purchasing items off such sites and passing over money to people you do not know. Our advice; do so at your own risk.

• Four wheel drive vehicles are still being stolen across the Canterbury District and the Darfield area has not been immune to this. Please do not leave your vehicles, and especially four wheel drives, parked out on the streets at night. Best to have them secured and locked away in your garage, keys removed from ignition and all doors and windows shut and locked.

• If renting out houses, do your homework and background checks wisely on prospective tenants and have a bond and rental agreement drawn up through the Government Tenancy Services.

• Be aware when driving on rural roads that ducks are presently nesting in scrub and cover near roadside drains. They will walk and fly out on to roads when leaving their nests for food. Currently there are many flattened ducks on roads - right across our district.

Selwyn Gallery is bringing something a little different to the community’s art scene this October, highlighting the design, art and craft skills from selected members of The Textile and Fibre Arts Network of Christchurch (TAFAN). The exhibition opens at 6pm, Friday, September 27th and runs until Thursday, October 26th, 2019.

TAFAN is a collection of the following groups: Canterbury

Works by the Textile and Fibre Arts Network from their 2019 exhibition.

Embroiderers Guild, Canterbury Patchwork and Quilting Guild, Canterbury Modern Quilt Guild, Christchurch Needlework Guild, Canterbury Modern Quilt Guild, Christchurch Guild of Spinners and Weavers, Christchurch Knitting Machine Club, Cust Craft Group, Southern Felters and Christchurch Lacemakers. The groups joined forces in July 2011, following the Christchurch Earthquake to support and promote each other’s craft and share premises - many of which had been destroyed.

Throughout the exhibition there will be a selection of demonstrations from a variety

of TAFAN members, and exhibition organisers encourage folk to drop in, as the exhibitors are all very keen to speak about their craft. The exhibition is also a featured stop of the inaugural Art Crawl, a gallery tour in conjunction with Down by the Liffey, Lakeland Art, Taste of Life Tours and Selwyn District Council.

In 1954, after a group of women got together to discuss their preschool education needs in the Malvern area, Darfield Playcentre was born. Initially, sessions were held at Calvin Hall - where the Trinity Church is now located with Dorne Broughton as the first supervisor and twenty children on the roll. Soon after, Noreen Mulholland (Pearson Pearson) Pearson was appointed supervisor and remained in this position for eighteen years, making her the Centre’s patroness.

In 2019, Darfield Playcentre Puawananga is turning sixty five years old with thirty six families and fifty four children enrolled across five sessions a week that run from 9am to 12pm. Every session is held in a purpose-built building on Ross Street, sharing a fence with the Primary School that takes in so many of their graduates. The children have many chances to learn about their community on exploring trips around Darfield, to have

specially fun days in town and to form bonds with their friends, big and little. Having such a high adult-child ratio makes Playcentre an ideal earlychildhood education centre with so many learning opportunities and mixed-age interaction.

Expecting mothers who attend the Centre with older children are supported and find a loving group who can’t get enough of newborn baby cuddles, it was reported.

Over the last sixty five years, Darfield Playcentre has seen hundreds of Selwyn children grow and blossom into citizens of the area and of the world, spreading Playcentre’s values of whanau learning together and raising families as a village.

Being a part of Playcentre also means that many parents and grandparents over the years have received a valuable education on the philosophy of play-based learning and much more. Playcentre is a place of

support for families and they are proud to embrace all backgrounds and cultures, while enjoying the magic that is children playing, growing and learning alongside their families.

To celebrate this proud milestone, Darfield Playcentre is having a party and would like to invite all past and present members to share in a cuppa and a bite of cake, to reminisce and to have a look around the Centre. The children will have bouncy castles to play in and much more. Adults can have a yarn around the kai table and check out how far the Centre has come!

“Come and see the old photo albums and get stuck in some playdough, the more the merrier,” commented one of the event organisers.

With Summer slowly manifesting, many of us are doing more outdoor activities, from DIY getting the deck summer-ready, to sprucing up the garden. All outdoor physical activities require a strong core to prevent injuries, aches and pains.

Major depression is the most common mood disorder worldwide, including in this country. It is of such great concern that the New Zealand government has focussed on he lp ing t o rev ers e it.

patients were suffering from depression and/or anxiety and researched medical literature and clinical trials to find answers. He found over a hundred causes of depression and anxiety, as well as over a hundred ways that can improve it. The result is the scientifically proven Nedley Depression and Anxiety Recovery Programme. It teaches a variety of tools for improved mental health, including ways to improve emotional intelligence, enhance energy and mood levels, manage stress, sleep better, improve brain function and achieve peak mental performance, etc. He has documented that the programme has helped over

6,000 participants from numerous countries to achieve improved mental health, and the numbers are ever increasing.

Having run this programme here in Canterbury for a couple of years the results are similarly astonishing! Most participants have improved their mental condition considerably during the eight weeks and therefore organisers feel able to present the programme with confidence.

They comment, “anyone struggling with depression and/ or anxiety can be assured that you don’t have to live this way.

TRINITY CHURCH - DARFIELD Trinity Church in Darfield was the first purpose-built joint-use church in New Zealand and is a great example of churches working together.

In 1970 the Presbyterian, Methodist and Anglican congregations in Darfield all owned small, old buildings in need of repair so they got together and agreed to build a bigger, modern building that they could all use. And so the fundraising began with the slogan ‘Faith in Tomorrow’.

After many meetings with the wider parishes and the higher courts of each denomination the legal work was thrashed out

and a plan agreed on. However, when tenders were called for the building the numbers came in way above budget, so the steering committee members decided to be their own builders and engaged local, Graham Taege, Taege as the overseer of the project. The Methodist church property was sold, the Presbyterian site was prepared and work began with the laying of the foundation stone in April, 1976.

On November 25th, 1979 the new Trinity Church was opened and dedicated. Members of the three congregations held final services in their old churches, then, at the ringing of the bell, they processed to Trinity through the lychgate.

Treasured items were carried from the old churches to the new.

Fundraising continued with the Cottage Arts craft shop, catering group, flower barrow, art exhibition etc plus many

generous donations of time, money and materials from church members and the wider community and, in 1985, the building became debt-free and was formally consecrated. It is owned 50/50 by the Malvern Anglican and the Malvern Cooperating (Methodist/ Presbyterian) Parishes.

The church was designed to be multipurpose and has been used for weddings, funerals, concerts, exhibitions, community groups, pre-school music, Sunday School etc in addition to regular 9.30am Sunday services. It is a great example of churches working together and with the community.

“And we still have ‘Faith in Tomorrow’ as we celebrate forty years of working together at a special service where everyone is welcome,” said a spokesperson for Trinity Church.

Parent feedback is valuable and has included comments such as, “we definitely find more time to read.” “Dad helps out more with reading time.” “Great way to spend more time as a family.” and “It has given us heaps of new ways to approach reading and has encouraged us to be more relaxed about reading.”

Next term our Early Learning Centres will be running a set of three Reading Together

workshops for our wonderful four year olds and in the future there will opportunities for our year 7 or 8 parents to attend a workshop involving reading at a very different level.

Ginny Nelson All kura (schools) in the Malvern Kāhui Ako have been running Reading Together workshops with groups of parents and children throughout this term.

This is a researched based programme which aims to help p a r e n t s / w hān a u p r o v i d e support with reading at home.

Reading Together involves three workshops held at the kura with the final night being held at the Darfield Library where Emmaline Sibbald, Sibbald the local librarian, welcomed the schools. The wonderful Darfield librarians gave the visitors an amazing tour of what they are now offering children (and parents) in the Library. We learnt about the newest items available to enhance the experience of reading with children. These include Te Reo picture books, themed book packs and more recently children’s books that have the story recorded for listening to while reading. All of these resources are available to the wider community.

We want as many parents as possible to have the opportunity to experience Reading Together and have been fortunate to gain funding from the Ministry of Education to assist us. This funding means that free

At the August meeting members were greeted with a delicious soup and savoury lunch. Our speaker was Dawn Logan who gave an enthusiastic account of her visit to Sissinghurst one of Britain's well known Heritage gardens. Situated in Kent Dawn described Sissinghurst as representing, for her, the height of perfection for garden lovers. In the early 1930’s Vita Sackville West and husband Harold purchased a derelict castle and farmland and had the vision and courage to create an iconic reminder of an era which saw women becoming prominent in garden design.

In September a floral workshop was held. Members were asked to bring a small vase, flowers and foliage. Frances Smith demonstrated two arrangements suitable for a dining, or coffee, table. Over half the members present did their own arrangements to take home and all did very well. Frances gave help and suggestions where necessary.

The meeting concluded with afternoon tea and a good social time. Names were taken for the bus trip to Southbridge at the beginning of October.

Local Bayleys Real Estate agent and lover of, and participant in, all types of adrenaline-boosting, extreme sports Craig Blackburn is set to finally take on the Rescue Crew Challenge, ‘A Day in the Life of a Paramedic’, with his team on Sunday, September 22nd at the Garden City Helicopters Aviation Air Centre.

Twenty three teams are set to go head to head in this incredibly worthwhile challenge to raise much-needed funds for the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue. This event was intended to be held earlier this year but was postponed due to the devastating Mosque shooting.

Team Bayleys’ has had a few changes due to some of the team members not being available for the new date. The team that will take on this challenge will be Craig Blackburn, Kayla Dynes, Dynes Paul Willetts and Louise Sams and together they have already raised a fabulous $10,221.52, which has exceeded the original target set for teams of $5000 set because this is the average cost of an Air Rescue.

Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue covers the largest single geographical area in New Zealand and in a life and death

situation, where every minute counts, Air Rescue may be a patient’s only chance for survival.

While demand for the service is increasing, only 50% of the service funding comes from the Government (Ministry of Health, DHB and ACC). Air Rescue crews are on call 24/7, 365 days a year and over a 24 hour period, an average of three people in the region will place their lives in their hands.

With all teams competing at the same time the challenge is likely be an absolute thriller. Live

coverage of the events will be streamed to spectators and on social media channels (Facebook: Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue) and mid event interviews with competitors are also planned.

Willie Apiata will be at the event, cheering on every team as they battle for the title. Competitors will need brains, teamwork, strength, endurance and grit to make it out of the course on top. For spectators there will be a huge barbecue, spot prizes and of course the chance to see the winners crowned.

On September 7th and 8th, Selwyn District Council and Christchurch City Council, hosted a delegation from Gansu Province in North West China.

This was a special occasion to celebrate Christchurch’s thirty five years of Sister City relationship with Gansu Province.

Christchurch City was gifted a large bronze horse, the symbol of Gansu.

Selwyn also has a Sister City relationship with Shandan County in Gansu Province. The Mayor of Selwyn Sam Broughton, Broughton and the Mayor of Shandan, Lu Sidong signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding, to focus future relationships on mutual sharing of information in the areas of education, agriculture and water, tourism and exchanges.

Both of these relationships developed because Rewi Alley, Alley who was born in Springfield, worked in Gansu Province establishing schools and cooperatives. His philosophy of ‘hands and minds together’ remains a key element in Shandan Bailie School which has a Sister School relationship with Darfield High School.

Gansu Province is located on the Silk Route and is bounded by Inner Mongolia and the Gobi Desert. It is an agricultural region with sheep, maize and sunflowers. During his time there many years ago, Rewi Alley imported Corriedale sheep from North Canterbury. Some of the delegation were able to visit the Sidey farm which was the source of these sheep and view rams ready for export to Uruguay.

The delegation was led by Lin Duo, Duo the Gansu Party Secretary General, who is the most important leader in the Province.

In Selwyn the group visited the Rewi Alley Memorial Park in Springfield and saw the site of the original Springfield School and school house where Rewi Alley was born. Geoff Stevenson showed the visitors the Sheffield Central Plains Water (CPW) reservoir and the infrastructure of the scheme. At Fonterra, ECan’s input was highlighted by John Sunkell.

Sunkell Catherine Trout further explained the CPW scheme. Blake Ashton, Ashton last year’s Gansu Fellow, who is Fonterra’s Cream Cheese manager, was able to give the delegation a short factory tour.

ne has to ask oneself is the Selwyn District Council out of control and the answer can only be yes.

Just look what has happened over the last three years.

• The demolition of the Sicon Building for a third petrol station in Darfield has to be questioned. Was a deal done?

• The total number of SDC staff has increased to 448 (2018 figures). The wages bill

during the last three years of annual reports has gone up over a million dollars a year to over 19 million dollars.

This is more than the total Council budget in 2000!

Roading during the same time has gone from thirteen million dollars in 2015, to just ten million dollars in 2018.

Although, some of the roading expenditure must have been used to purchase

•

those uneven surface road signs, they will have been cheaper than repairing the roads.

This new method of hall booking and charges is just plain crazy. Proposed hall rates are now per hour, for what used to be total hire.

Plus the bookings will be done in Rolleston. If you believe the mayor this policy is the best thing since sliced

•

bread, it just ne eds explaining; that has never happened as it can’t be done.

To top it off, society owned hall communities pay hall rates, but their money is spent elsewhere, funds for their halls have to be found independently. Mind you the Council has offered to use the rates if the society gives the hall to the Council; such as Sheffield.

The Mayor needs a four wheel drive to get around - funny how other mayors didn’t; and being the highest paid elected member he wants child allowance for baby sitters.

Volunteers don’t get child allowance.

The only solution is, vote Bill Woods to put it right.

am very excited to stand for election to Selwyn District Council. I have lived in the district on and off for the last seventeen years. However my family have lived, worked, farmed, played and enjoyed the District for over one hundred years and I'm proud to call it home.

Selwyn and want to help shape the District's future so that we can all continue to enjoy our District in the years to come. I represent the young parents perspective in Selwyn Central. Selwyn Central has been my home for the last nine years. I love living here so I stood for Council in 2016, and was honoured to be elected. I am passionate about the Selwyn District. I truly want our District to the best it can be

with healthy, sustainable communities that all ages and abilities can enjoy. To achieve this, I believe it is my duty to listen and advocate for our community.

As a mother of three boys (nine, eleven and thirteen years), I have been actively involved in the community. I am a past Chairperson of Rolleston Residents’ Association, previous member of Rolleston School

BoT, and was a Scout leader.

My background is in environmental engineering and planning so I am able to understand and question the technical detail reported to Council. I have taken a strong interest in water, waste and wastewater issues, the Rolleston town centre development, the indoor courts facility, Te Ara Ātea (library/community space), and the district plan review, as

well. Road safety has also been a strong focus of mine and I am currently the district road safety committee’s chairperson. In that role I have advocated for an intersection upgrade of SH73 and Weedons Ross Road, and lower speed limits along SH73 through West Melton.

I have worked in the construction industry for over 37 years and can bring my experience and knowledge to manage the new Selwyn facilities to successful operation. I have recently worked for Christchurch City Council, monitoring Major Projects.

Selwyn has a committed spend of $100 million in the next three years on a group of major landmark projects, this level of spend is unprecedented for the District and we must not miss the opportunity to do it right first time. If elected I am able to bring my experience on the following projects to the Selwyn District; Christchurch Town Hall, Tu ranga - central library, Christchurch’s new airport terminal and control tower and the Dunedin stadium.

Voting is an important part of our democracy, and it’s great to see a range of candidates standing in the Selwyn District this year.

I’m standing for Council because I’m passionate about representing young families, youth, immigrants, and the ruralurban mix that’s developing here. I am currently a full-time mum of three, a chronic volunteer, and have lived in Selwyn Central for six years - first in Broadfield, where we had a lifestyle block, and more recently in Rolleston. I love big multi-faceted challenges, my employment history ranges from small business, to education and local government, and after years of making submissions and debating needs versus rates, with other residents, I am 100% ready to give those opinions a louder voice in Council.

I love how Selwyn is becoming somewhere that we all can truly live, work, play, and learn, but believe we need to do more to reduce how much time and money our residents actually spend in Christchurch. I want to continue the development of local facilities, businesses, and infrastructure, but also ensure that Council listens to the community and fully considers the environmental impacts of decisions. The coming years are going to be huge in terms of applying climate change-related legislation at a local level, and the upcoming District Plan consultation will essentially guide how our rates are calculated, and spent, over the next ten years.

Specifically we need: Trust: We need to engender a culture of trust especially between rural and urban communities. The current ‘them and us’ attitude is getting in the way of sensible debate and delivering solutions. This would include engendering a culture where everyone acknowledges they are part of the challenge (whether that is water quality, air pollution, climate change, roading or transport) and that we can all do something about our own behaviour and accept the cost of providing the solutions; not just blame others.

Whether we like it or not, in Canterbury the well-being of urban areas is still linked to the health of farming.

Planning Flexibility: Greater trust and respect enables more flexibility in how plans and rules can be changed (more emphasis on enabling solutions rather

than stopping stuff). Under the current system it can take five years to change plans which is far too long. It could also enable a system that better rewards those land managers, people and businesses that are getting it right, so that emphasis could go on those practises that are causing the problems we are trying to solve. This would include devolving greater responsibility to zone committees (local communities) as their local expertise is critical in bringing a dvice a nd

community aspirations to Council. This might help prevent inappropriate development such as quarries in residential areas.

Our way forward is to stop blaming others, start having proper conversations and all take every step we can (and then another one) to live within our social and environmental means, otherwise life here will be miserable - not just for us, but every species.

In addition to the bigger challenges, there are other related issues covered by the Regional Council, such as transport, particularly the lack of public transport across our region, air and water quality, flood prevention and emergency preparedness, as well as r e giona l le a der s hip a nd advocacy.

My nine years’ experience as a district councillor, with six as de p ut y ma yor , i ncl ude d representation on regional committees, qualifications as an RMA hearing commissioner, a strong advocate for public transport and a proven track record. I have lived in both rural and urban areas and aim to build understanding between the two.

in return I will strive for better in undertaking the role, including building knowledge and finding pathways with you. t has been a privilege to represent Mid Canterbury Ashburton and Selwyn Districts for the last three years. These three years of learning and experience, as well as attending an Institute of Directors governance course, has enabled me to bring effective, considered decision making to the ECan table, which I wish to continue doing.

I am standing for re election because not only have I genuinely enjoyed my first term, I feel I have made a very positive and real contribution. I understand politics and how to engage in processes to

achieve the best outcomes possible in what at times are almost no win situations.

Our biggest challenge in the next term is legislation coming out of Central Government. We have real fears for what might be included in the NPS Fresh Water, compliance expectations and RMA changes. It is not just the volume of change that is coming at us that is of concern, but the short time lines that may be attached that will not allow for just and smooth transitions if significant change is mandated by Government.

As a third generation dairy farmer from the Leeston area I

Our Family has a strong community focus; in particular with St John Ambulance, I am a qualified paramedic, my wife is an Emergency Medical Technician, and our children are now operational volunteers.

I believe that the combination of my 3 years at Ecan, 32 years on the road as a volunteer ambulance officer, and life time in rural communities has given me

unique insight into environmental management issues and the process and impact of these on both the community and individuals. A vote for me will ensure an informed and steady hand remains at the council table, representing and advocating for Mid Canterbury.

“A VOTE FOR ME WILL ENSURE CONTINUANCE OF GOOD, SOUND JUDGEMENT & GENUINE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ISSUES THAT FACE US” A number of achievements stand out for me after my first term at Ecan:  Through the Canterbury Water Management Strategy portfolio, I’ve led the Selwyn River recharge programme, advocated for the review of Ashburton River consents allowing time for consent holders to make the best of the tough flow regime that comes into play in 2023 and achieved the statutory acknowledgement of the Hinds Drains working group recommendations. This farmer driven project provides both environmental and production outcomes that are truly collaborative in their genesis and outcomes; the epitome of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.  Through the Hazard and Risk portfolio I am the ECan nominee on the Canterbury Group Civil Defence committee, and at present I am the deputy Chair. This has given me the opportunity to work with both the Minister and the Civil Defence Ministry in providing input into what the new Emergency Response Ministry will look like, and the processes and systems that sit under it.  In the past few months, I have been appointed Chair of the Performance Audit and Risk Committee. This committee provides the public face and reports on the finances and levels of service of ECan. We have, as a Council, agreed that we need an independent member on this committee to assist us with driving best practice , both in identifying and mitigating risk but also in driving financial performance. This is all part of an ongoing conversation with senior management as to how we control costs, and therefore things such as rate rises, and look at continuous improvement in the organisation.

The ninth annual Hororata Highland Games will be held in early November at the Hororata Domain. The Hororata Highland Games is a community event which has grown to be New Zealand’s biggest Scottish festival and this past weekend seven athletes took part in a Heavy Events training day as they prepare for the Games.

Eighteen times New Zealand Heavyweight Champion, Pat Hellier and his wife Kirsten Hellier, Hellier who is a HighPerformance Throws coach with Athletics New Zealand, travelled from Tauranga to take the athletes through their paces.

“Highland Games is a sport that attracts a diverse range of people of all ages. It was great to see at this training day our experienced competitors progressing their skills, but also sharing with new people,” Pat said.

Sam Langford, Langford aged seventeen from Christchurch, attended his first training day. Sam won the Teen Warriors at the Games last year and in 2019 will step up to the Amateur grade. “Sam is a great example of how Hororata is encouraging people into this sport. He has competed at the Junior level and is now stepping up.

“The cool thing is in the heavy arena you may be competing against one another, but you also help each other and have to work together, so he will benefit hugely from the experience.” explained Event Manager Cindy Driscoll.

Driscoll “We are excited this year to have some top-level female athletes competing in their own Championship at the Games. As well as the locals who have been training with us, we will also have a competitor from Australia and hopefully a New Zealand Commonwealth Games athlete coming to compete,” commented Pat Hellier.

The Hororata Highland Games sees all the traditional Scottish competitions take place over one massive day at the Hororata Domain. The festival hosts New Zealand’s biggest one day Highland Dancing competition, top-level Pipe Bands, Solo pipers and Drummers, Tug O’ War teams and of course the strong men and women competing in the Heavy Events. The Junior Warriors see primary schoolaged children competing in light versions of the Heavy Events, while the Kilted Mile provides an opportunity for the fleet-footed to gain a coveted Hororata Highland Games trophy.

“The competitions are without doubt the heart of the Games, but the festival surrounding them is what elevates the Hororata Highland Games to the next level,” Cindy said. “In amongst the stalls, food

vendors and fairground you expect to find at a festival, there are some activities and entertainment which are inimitable to the Games,” she added.

New for 2019 are the Best Dressed Lads and Lassies competitions. “We are looking forward with excitement to see the range of creative tartan outfits paraded on the main stage, following the Welcome Ceremony, and to be judged by fashion industry icons,” Cindy explained.

The Hororata Highland Games is a community festival staged by the Hororata Community Trust.

All funds raised benefit the community. “Our community loves welcoming visitors to the Games and it is a highlight of the year for many,” Cindy concluded.

On the evening of Wednesday September 11th, a full contingent of thirty two teams with four players each, took to the mats to participate in the annual Darfield Hospital Indoor Bowls Tournament.

This was the twenty seventh occasion on which the event has been held, since the inaugural one in 1993.

The organisation for the event, is carried out by the Darfield Indoor Bowls Club, who have been outstanding, long-time supporters, in collaboration with The Friends of Darfield Hospital, and is the culmination of several weeks’ preparation.

Each team of four players, must include at least two players who don’t play for a club on a regular basis. This provides those people who are interested in trying the game out, with the opportunity to participate alongside regular players, to have some success and receive support, in a fun environment.

During the evening, each team plays three games lasting thirty five minutes each. After the games have ended, there is time for a social chat while the results are being worked out, and a fine supper is served. The evening concluded with the results for the Bowls being announced, prizes for the winners and place getters presented, and the long awaited raffle results called out.

Prior to the event being held,

the members of both the Indoor Bowls Club and The Friends of the Hospital, approached local businesses, organisations and families, for donations and prizes, both for the bowls and the raffle, run on the night. Both organisations wish to record their delight at the warm welcomes and generosity they always encounter, during this process.

It is projected that almost $5,000 will be raised this year from the event. The Friends of the Hospital will use these valuable funds, to help achieve their core goal of providing items for the Hospital, which enhance the care, treatment and comfort of the patients.

There are corresponding benefits for the staff as they carry out their very valuable work. Over the years the cumulative funds earned through this tournament has been extraordinary.

Darfield Hospital is enjoying a great phase in its ninety two year existence at present, with the community continuing to provide great support, and also the C.D.H.B. re-roofing the building and providing a modern generator for electricity in an emergency. There is also a possibility of some of the exterior of the building getting a coat of paint.

Over the years the tournament has raised significant funds for the benefit of the Hospital, and The Friends acknowledge the huge effort made by the Indoor Bowls Club to make this possible.

On Friday, September 13th all the Year 5 and 6 students from Darfield Primary School attended the Christchurch Cultural Festival in the Horncastle Arena. Over these three days many schools from around the Canterbury region celebrate their cultural diversity by participating in either a matinee, or evening performance.

Throughout the year Matua Anton, Anton Darfield Primary School’s Kapa Haka tutor, along with Year 5 and 6 teachers have worked with students to ensure that they were performance ready for the day.

The students were led by Darfield Primary School Kapa Haka Leaders Jack Molloy and Hannah De Bressac with Falcon KokauaKokaua-Lush, Lush Brooke Butler and Paige Adams also helping and supporting. The group performed three items - Ka Kitea, Utaina and Puria Nei. It was reported that the adults acompanying the Kapa Haka group were amazed by the fantastic performance and commented on how cohesive they looked while on stage.

“The audience responded positively to the performance by giving them a large round of applause,” commented Darfield Primary School Principal, Meredith Devonald.

GONDOLA & BRIDLE PATH On Wednesday, September 11th seventy one Year 3-4 students and twenty five adults from Darfield Primary School walked part of the Bridle Path and travelled up the Christchurch Gondola.

The purpose of the trip was to further reinforce their learning about how part of Canterbury was formed. Students had read local Maori legend, Te Wai Pounamu which told about how the South Island was shaped.

This inspired studies of how different rocks were formed igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Back at school pupils even used baking to try and show how some of the rocks were formed!

The children all had an opportunity to visit the Time Tunnel at the top of the Christchurch Gondola and many said their favourite part was where they saw a video of how Banks Peninsula was formed.

As they travelled along the Bridle Path the group spent considerable time picking up a variety of rocks and trying to determine how they were formed.

The highlight of the trip for the accompanying adults was the enthusiasm of the students and the engagement with their learning. The highlight of the trip for the students it was reported, was walking down the Bridle Path and collecting rocks.

Members of the Springfield community are rallying around a new initiative in the township.

Temporarily entitled the Springfield Community Pit Project the area will be given an official name closer to completion.

Located on five acres at the corner of Tramway Road and Tawera Lane in the Springfield township, the Springfield Community Pit Project will become a place of fitness, fun and wellbeing for both locals and visitors alike, to enjoy.

Plans include a walk track with fitness and movement circuit, flowing bike trail, pump track and skills zone/trials area all set in expansive bird-friendly, native plantings. Various familyfriendly areas are also planned i n c l ud i n g co i n -o p e r at e d barbecues, picnic areas and a nature play area for the littlies.

The main areas planned are: Multipurpose Track: Track running around the perimeter of the pit offering an easy walk and access between the railway station to Springfield School and Faulkner Way. Native Plantings: Plantings creating a wonderland for birds and bees and a restful, nature-rich setting for those who visit.

Barbecue, Water Station and Picnic Area: Area with covered coin operated barbecues and a picnic area that will overlook the park and features.

Nature Play Area: Area including child friendly features for little ones to explore nature and initiate imagination and adventure-based play.

Fitness Stations: Stations created in conjunction with Rejuvenate You, will be placed along the walking track - with everything from dip bars to balance beams. Lockable Day Shed:

Flowy Bike Trail: Trail Using the undulating terrain of the pit, the bike trail will cater for all ages and wind throughout the area amongst native plantings creating a fun area to roll over hills and various natural features.

Pump and Jump Track: Track A playground for all wheels. By combining rolling jumps with turns, the track will be designed to provide challenges and progression for all abilities.

From features that a four-yearold can roll through, or a more advanced rider could jump.

Bike Skills Zone (Trials Area): Filled with features to refine balance and focus, the course will be filled with fun features to test skills with the end goal to ride the features without putting a foot down.

“Along with Council support, this project is being fuelled by

The Canterbury Primary Schools and Canterbury AIMS (Intermediate and Middle Schools) held their annual Aerobics, Dance/Hip Hop and Funk competition at the Hornby High School Auditorium on Wednesday, September 4th.

This was the first time West Melton Primary School had entered this competition and most of the dancers involved had no prior dance experience. The two hip hop teams entered worked incredibly hard over the past term getting themselves ready for the competition. Their work really paid off as West Melton took out first and second in the Year 7/8 Novice section out of fourteen teams. The teams pulled off fabulous performances with only one point separating their scores. “The children put in a mammoth effort and to say I’m proud of them is an understatement,” commented West Melton School’s Assistant Sports’ teacher, Jane Howden.

Howden The winning team from West Melton Primary School was the West Melton Beyonslay, that finished on seventy points, the judges commented that their performance was very entertaining. The team consisted of Nash Allen, Allen Bradley Bourke, Bourke Sione Tonga, Tonga Izzy Triggs, Triggs Luke Ward, Ward Emilie Wissel, Wissel Leila Young and Sophie Collier.

A great night was had by all who attended and all three clubs are looking forward to next year’s season and welcome any new members from school age onwards who would like to come along. “We also wish the Darfield High School’s smallbore team of Piper Benbow, Benbow Ryan Booth and James Grafton all the best for their competition next weekend at the Nationals in Wellington,” said a Malvern spokesperson.

This year Darfield High School entered two teams in the Target Shooting New Zealand Challenge event. Two hundred and eighty shooters took part across the country with schools from Invercargill to Cambridge competing.

Darfield High School’s mixed team (boys and girls) on the sling were Piper Benbow, Benbow James Grafton, Grafton Ryan Booth, Booth while Liam Barnhill, Barnhill Blake Woolie and Jack Guy were on the rest.

The sling team shot very well and took fourth place in the mixed event with a total score of 557.14 from a possible 600.60.

Our rest shooters, who are all new to the sport, took twenty third place from thirty six teams; so a credible result for their first

outing.

Individually Piper Benbow took third place in the girls’ event with an overall score of 196.05 from a possible 200.20. Ryan Booth and James Grafton placed at twenty eighth and sixty sixth positions respectively from ninety eight shooters. Ryan has only been shooting competitively for one season so twenty eighth is a very good result.

The Challenge event is a postal shoot where schools enter teams of three, shooting smallbore rifles off a rest and it’s where new shooters begin.

Or alternatively off the sling like all regular target shooters compete in club and national competition.

Darfield High School has three shooters (Piper Benbow, James Grafton, Ryan Booth) that are off to Wellington on September 27th to compete in the Shoulder to Shoulder match that is the Secondary Schools’ National Championship. It is a great opportunity for them to experience an event that is so hotly contested. Each school is competing for the honour of being the best in New Zealand, while the individual shooters are attempting to gain entry to the Island teams and ultimately the New Zealand Team that will shoot a postal shoot with teams from the United Kingdom on the final day of competition.
