When the Sheffield Fire Brigade received the 4.30am call to a fire at Porters Pass they wondered if they were going to be back in time to meet the competitors who had entered in their fundraising Father’s Day, Mud Plug.

On arrival at the Porters’ fire with the Springfield Brigade, and seeing how fast it was spreading, plus how dangerous it was, Sheffield could be excused for thinking they would never get back in time. Helicopters were called for, as it was inaccessible by foot, and they were the only way the fire could be brought under control, Sheffield’s Chief Fire Officer, Nev Croy reported.

On September 19th, 1989, the Malvern Childcare Centre was opened in the old Catholic school building on Telegraph Road. It provided for a need in the community, a place for children to come and learn and be cared for, whilst parents had time out or were working.

Initially the Centre had forty children on the roll, with ten attending on the first day. The cost was $3 an hour.

Thursday, September 19th 2019 is the Centre’s thirtieth anniversary. In 1993 a name change saw it become Darfield Preschool & Nursery, and in December 2013 relocation to their own purpose built building on Cardale Street took place.

Darfield Preschool & Nursery currently have one hundred children on the roll, with up to fifty seven attending each day.

The cost is $6 an hour.

“We continue to be a community based Centre with a Board of Trustees consisting of parents from our local community,” Charlotte Butler, Butler Board cha i rp e rs on s a id. “I t’s wonderful to be involved in the preschool community and being on the board gives a great insight to the education of our young minds. The Centre’s vision is ‘to grow our tamariki to be positive, proud, resilient community members who embrace a love of learning’,” she added.

Many families have passed through the Preschool doors.

“It continues to bring joy to see what those who previously

attended are doing, and achieving in their lives, as they move through the primary school to secondary schools and beyond,” Centre Manager, Clare Clatworthy said.

Clare has been with the preschool for nearly eighteen years and commented that she loves to attend the high school senior prize giving to see what everyone plans to do when they leave school and remember them as toddlers in the sandpit, painting a picture, or racing around the bike track.

Netty de Hertog started as a teacher back in 1991 and has been at the Preschool in some capacity since then, only taking some leave to have her children and do a little travelling. When asked what makes her stay she said, “Darfield Preschool & Nursery has become part of my family, my whānau. The other teachers and staff, the children and their families are what makes the day for me.”

“We have started to see things come full circle and reconnect with families, as previous children return as parents,” Clare said. “These returns highlight the Centre’s practice in providing consistent, quality education and care which actively involves families and the wider community.

“We will celebrate with the children on the day by making a birthday cake, singing “Happy Birthday” and having a bit of a party,” she added.

“We will open our doors on Friday, September 20th from 5.30pm and invite the community, and anyone who has been involved with the

Preschool over the last thirty years, to come along to the Centre for a small celebration and reminisce,” Clare added.

“Everyone is invited from past board members, teachers, parents, grandparents and children.

“Bring along some fish and chips for tea (we’ll provide sauce and bread) and have a slice of birthday cake to help us celebrate this wonderful achievement. If you can find your old profile books, bring them along for a few laughs and giggles too,” Clare concluded.

Local talented equestrian rider Sophie Townsend has been selected for the South Island Show Jumping Junior Rider team. This team will head to Victoria, Australia to compete in the annual show jumping competition held at Werribee Park from October 5th - 6th.

Sophie is part of a four rider team along with Noah Coutts, Coutts Makenzie Causer and Pippa Collins; Collins Pieta Milne is the team’s non travelling reserve and its coach is Fiona Gillies.

“At one of the residents regular gatherings held at the Haunui Retirement Village, we talked about the very good aspects of living here, in warm, double glazed modern villas,” reported Haunui resident Colleen Davidson.

“Having a garden immediately around our villas is wonderful, we can plant as little, or as much, as we want to look after,” Colleen said. “And twice a week we have Robin Cattell visiting to make sure that all is well,” she explained.

“With shops, cafés, churches, dentist, post office and chemist all in walking distance and other amenities nearby, including the swimming pool. We are well catered for,” Colleen went on to say.

“The reasonable service charges cover any repairs,

maintenance, insurance and rates, so all in all this is a great place to live,” she reported.

“Being in Darfield it is also

handy for local friends and family to visit, and I know all the residents agree with me,” Colleen concluded.

The new Council policies, endorsed by the mayor regarding halls and reserves are destroying our communities by using Council staff to take control of these community assets.

For over a hundred years these facilities were built and run by local volunteer residents, setting prices that were affordable for the locals to make use of these facilities.

With the Council’s new policies the volunteers will become toothless committees. Hire rates, set and now booked in Rolleston have escalated by hundreds of percent. What were standard charges have now become hourly rates. The new rates will ensure less use of these facilities forcing closure.

Volunteers will not give up their time to just be puppets.

On Saturday, September 7th New Zealand’s most successful Sweet Adelines a’cappella chorus performed two very successful shows in the St Margaret’s College, Chas Luney Auditorium to enthusiastic audiences who were delighted with the two contest packages presented. The Christchurch City Chorus, Sweet Adelines group is off to represent New Zealand in New Orleans, USA at the 2019 Sweet Adelines International Barbershop Harmony Competition.

Almost one hundred and thirty women will take to the international stage and compete against thirty five plus other choruses from as far afield as Sweden, England and all the regions in the States as well as one from Australia.

“It promises to be a most exciting and fiercely fought contest,” commented local Chorus member Mabel Knight of Kirwee.

The Christchurch City Chorus under the direction of their Master Director Virginia Humphrey Taylor have spent many, many hours rehearsing and working to be the best that they can be. Enriching Voices

Enriching Lives is the Mantra of their Chorus and all are committed to the task ahead and really looking forward to the challenge.

Guest artists at last Saturday’s performances were the Leopard Coach Lines Brass Band under the direction of Bandmaster Nathaniel Griffiths and their two sets were also very well received.

Last year Greendale School were gifted their Māori name, Kānuka Ruruhau, by Te Taumutu Rūnanga and so it was fitting that in Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), they unveiled their new School sign, complete with both names.

Kānuka Ruruhau is Kānuka: The Protector. Year six students explained to the community that Kānuka is seen as symbolic of the students, with the older children acting as the nursery for the younger ones, providing

an environment for them to thrive. This could also be said of the kaiako and older members of the kura (school) providing safe, nurturing circumstances for all students to thrive. The multipurpose use of the Kānuka also acts as a symbolic reference to the wide range of attributes students can bring to the School but also, by providing a nurturing environment, ensuring they leave with many more.

On behalf of the Darfield High School A netball team.

On Sunday at 10 am our funfilled tournament week had already started with the packing of the van. Next we started our six hour drive up to Nelson before settling into our beachside accommodation.

Being woken up at 7am the next morning definitely made us realise we weren’t just here for a holiday.

We started off the tournament with two strong wins against Hillmorton High School and Westland High School, securing ourselves a spot in the top sixteen of the B grade.

On the second day we had a win

against Lincoln High School and drew with Kaikoura, after being ten points down.

When Wednesday came around, so did the rain, we played Timaru Girls High School in the downpour and came away with another a win! However, we had our first loss of the tournament to Waimea College that afternoon.

Finishing second in our second pool we made it into the playoffs for fifth-eighth place.

On Thursday, we lost our first game against Motueka meaning we were down to play off for seventh against Middleton Grange who came away with a one point win last time we played them. We came out strong and came away with a

34 -17 win, giving us seventh overall out of the thirty two teams in B grade.

We cannot thank Maria Townsend, Townsend Sharon Forrester and Brooke Cantwell enough for helping make this week happen along with all your support and encouragement.

As well as our whole team, you all played amazing throughout the tournament and should be super proud of what you have done.

Darfield High School had numerous other teams competing during Winter Tournament week, which was held from September 2nd - 6th, at various South Island locations.

The Darfield High School basketball team finished in seventh place, out of twelve teams in their competition played in Christchurch. Jackson Proud was top basketball shooter in the tournament, scoring the most goals.

The Darfield High School U15 rugby team finished in fourth place in DIV 1, after their games played at either Lincoln or Waihora.

The rock climbing team were placed fourth in the Secondary Schools’ Rock Climb ing Championship which was held at the YMCA in Christchurch.

Twenty four visitors braved the cold and attended the open garden at Terrace Station on Sunday, September 8th.

To the Editors: I have been wondering if I was the only person who feels that Darfield is getting a raw deal from Selwyn Council. Recent conversations with locals has shown me I am not alone in thinking this.

There were the houses in Ritso St which belonged to the people of Darfield and which were sold and the proceeds taken out of our area.

Then we learnt a third petrol station was to be built in the town, who can possibly think we need three petrol stations??? As if that was not enough the Sicon building was demolished so the petrol company could use the land. No doubt this will bring in money for the Council, but where will the money be spent, probably not in Darfield?

The Sicon building would have been an ideal space for the combined churches 'Malvern Hub' which needs a home to enable the continuation of their work helping less fortunate local families.

Another pointer was the coloured pamphlets put out by Council outlining major projects in Selwyn for 2019/20. This includes an indoor sports centre for Rolleston, extensions to the aquatic centre in Rolleston, Rolleston town centre development, a Health Hub for Rolleston and development of roads in Rolleston town centre. This comes to almost $90 million. As our rates have gone up 6% I thought I would read on and see what was in the plan for Darfield - $150,000 for new filters in the Darfield pool, seriously!!

We need people on Council who will speak up for us, maybe we all need to speak up for our town. We are a growing area, we pay rates and we deserve our share.

“When we were released it was straight down to the Mud Plug venue,” he recalled.

The event attracted a full-field of entrants with 45 vehicles onsite.

“We could not have had a better day and estimate there were between 2,500 and 3,000 people in attendance,” Nev explained. “With State Highway 73 closed at Springfield this may have helped us with spectator numbers,” he added.

“Those competing told us that this is now one of the Mud Plugs with the largest numbers of spectators in the South Island, if not in New Zealand,” Nev added.

Organisers had arranged for a selection of trade stands to be o n s i t e, a l o ng w it h a n entertaining auction during the lunch-break, (run by auctioneer Grant McIlroy) McIlroy and this saw many spectators head home with some bargains.

Malvern Lions and Sheffield School were on-hand with a good supply of quality, hot food for purchase and both groups reported they were sold out by day’s-end. A warm day saw long queues at the Mr Whippy van and the two coffee vendors were kept extremely busy also.

“For those that haven’t experienced this Mud Plug before,” Nev commented, “the course is made up of twelve different hazards. Competitors must get through these without losing forward motion, or hitting marker pegs. If they get stuck, it is the passenger’s job to connect the rope to the tractor, so they can be pulled out,” he smiled.

“Each hazard has one or two marshalls running it and making sure the public remain in the marked, safe areas. We were grateful for the marshalling skills of Coalgate Fire Brigade members, along with the Canterbury Jeep Club.

“We run two classes at the event; Open and Buggy,” Nev explained. “Most vehicles have been modified, with some costing thousands of dollars, and built solely for events of this type. All vehicles were carefully scrutineered to make sure they complied with the high safety standard required. This is run as a fun day,” Nev commented, “ with every competitor collecting a prize.”

The Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade sincerely thank everyone who helped make their day successful.

“We really want to acknowledge the time and effort people put in to help run this event. The tractor and excavator owners, marshalls, gate personnel, score keepers and St John Ambulance, along with the course organisers Rob Carter and Dave Taylor.

Taylor “This event would not happen if it wasn’t for Derek Bull generously allowing us the use of his land,” Nev stressed.

“The officers and members of

the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade hope the public who supported this event had a wonderful time and, as always, your support is much appreciated,” Nev concluded.

Funds raised from this year’s event will go toward upgrading the Brigade’s support vehicle and to the Malvern Order of St John.

The North Canterbury Wearable Arts, held on Saturday, August 31st at the Rangiora Town Hall, were reported to be extremely successful. Both the matinee and evening audiences were treated to some amazing creations from both student and adult entrants. The inaugural use of the Rangiora Town Hall proved the venue to be a perfect showcase for North Canterbury's creativity. Event organisers are pleased to advise that this event will now be held annually at the same venue. Categories will be advised through the North Canterbury Wearable Arts Facebook page within the next month.

The Supreme Student and Adult winning costumes are currently displayed in the Oxford Arts Gallery, along with a couple of category winners.

Drivers on SH73 will have seen the commanding structure just over the railway line on the corner of Creyke Road (opposite the post-peeling site) which is the local home of Birchfield Energy and Resources.

Constructed by local tradespersons over the past few months the site contains a massive dry-storage area, offices and a public weighbridge. Sourcing suitable coal and wood each year, to ensure winter warmth, has long been a headache for many households, now it (along with landscaping supplies) can be either delivered, or collected from the new Birchfield site.

Birchfield Coal Mines Ltd is the parent company of Birchfield Energy and Resources Ltd and based on the West Coast they offer the best source of supply, direct to the public (both industrial and domestic) - at very competitive prices. Birchfield currently has around 5,000 cubic metres of Beech firewood on hand and available for immediate sale. Beech, sourced from the Coast is a hardwood giving a long burn time, clean and with little spark. Birchfield’s truck can deliver either one bulk load or four two cubic metre loads where customers in the same area can share the delivery charges. Darfield residents ordering three cubic metres of firewood, or more, can currently enjoy free delivery.

Birchfield also offer West Coast sub-

bituminous coal, a clean burning, low ash and low Sulphur alternative heating (high-grade West Coast resource bituminous, low-ash coal is also available).

This is sold in 20kg bags for the domestic, local customer, as well as 500kg bags, which can be loaded as is, or dumped loose onto a trailer, for those that live further afield, and have a larger storage capacity.

Mark Wisdom, Birchfield Coal Mines, Sales and Transport Manager, hails from the West Coast, but now lives locally, and is the face of Birchfield Energy and Resources, in Darfield.

Mark commented, “we plan to offer a range of landscaping products also. Along with our wood and coal supplies, we presently have in stock railway sleepers in 2100mm lengths and Paparoa Red Rock in three size grades.

These can be collected from the Depot or delivered to site,” he said.

This new facility, located right on Darfield’s doorstep takes away the uncertainty of sourcing fuel each time a cold snap approaches and with a proposed increase in the range of landscaping supplies, Birchfield Energy and Resource’s new Creyke Road depot really is a one-stop-shop.

Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust (TAK) is an incorporated Charitable Trust with the mission of working with landowners and schools to undertake restoration projects that will one day become stepping stones for a greenway from the mountains to the sea.

We learnt a lot about what types of trees we were planting, what

is the best way to plant a tree and what these trees do for the environment and habitat in the area. We were fortunate to have had a lovely lunch catered by Willows Cafe at the Hororata Golf Course. Great pies by the Kupes. It was a really fun day and it was a great opportunity to be able to give back to the community and the environment.'
