Malvern has triumphed in the final of the Mid-Week Open Women’s Hockey competition, which was played on Tuesday nights in Christchurch/Rangiora. Malvern took on Avon (who have won this competition three times in the past) in the final on Tuesday, August 27th on the main turf at Ngā Puna Wai in Halswell. Heading into the final Malvern had only lost one game this season and this was to the team they were up against. With the final underway the first goal was scored by Amy Truscott with a direct shot from a penalty corner. Their next goal started in mid field by Nicolle Hughes, Hughes passed to Emma Harding who beat several players to pass to Fliss Cox. Cox Fliss received the ball and with a direct shot beat the goalie with a hard hit. This saw the Malvern women up 2-0 in the first quarter. Avon pushed back though and following an untidy medley in front of the goal, with a ball coming off a defenders leg, Avon’s Paula Flannery Winsor scored. Malvern’s third goal came from an amazing touch; a deflection goal from Krystal Scott after receiving a rocket of

Amy Jones played the final in goal and had her usual, strong game, definitely keeping Malvern in the running. Midfield was well served by Lauren McIlroy, McIlroy Monica Falconer, Falconer Krystal Scott and Melanie Patterson who took on huge workloads, while Amy Truscott totally dominated in her role. The Malvern strikers of Fliss Cox, Emma Harding and Sophie Beaumont passed and ran well throughout the final while the Avon team struggled to contain. The Malvern team had several supporters cheering

them on, which they really appreciated and they thank them for coming out and braving the cold easterly wind present on the night. “It was a fantastic result for a huge team effort throughout the season, all players contributed and were committed to a memorable 2019 season win,” said team member Jane Jenkins proudly. The Malvern team are the deserved recipients of the Bill Lynn Trophy, for the Mid-Week Open Championship 2019.

On Thursday, August 29th Darfield’s extremely popular ‘The Fat Beagle’ Café turned three years old. While a café has been in existence in the premises for many years under various guises, it is under its current ownership of Lydia and Matt Gliddon that some huge changes have taken place. “We have absolutely loved the support we have received from our customers, community and passersby, you have all been outstanding,” Lydia said with a smile. The Café has recently expanded to take over the ground floor of the iconic main street, historic building - meaning more space, for more people, to enjoy the fabulous food and coffees the business provides. “We have been loving our new space after expanding to take over the whole bottom floor of the building, and it is very exciting to have the newly rebranded Dalethorpe House (formerly Darfield Gift Gallery) upstairs,” Lydia added. “The expansion allows us to take on some more projects, like holding a six week healthy lifestyle course in conjunction with PM Natural Nutrition,” Lydia explained. “I really would like to thank my amazing staff and fantastic

Darfield St John cadets competed recently at the local St John’s Canterbury competitions, held in Lincoln. The cadets competing at senior level had an outstanding result, winning overall in the team competition for the midCanterbury district. The team was made up of Rebecca Inch, Inch Samuel Ireland, Ireland Daisy Prosser and Bailey Inwood. Inwood Jenny Walters won the senior individual competition and the intermediate team consisting of Jonathan Sampson, Sampson Bella Williamson, Williamson Annabella Rooney and Anitisha Pascoe were placed second. Darfield also had another senior individual and a junior team competing. They all achieved placings in tests, but not overall. “All the Darfield cadets that attended were placed in one area of the competition, or another, which was awesome to

see,” commented Victoria Tomes, Tomes Divisional Manager, Darfield Youth Division, St John. Teams attending competed in a range of activities, including but not limited to: First aid, Drill, Caregivers and Communication. Both the senior and

Patricia Henderson and Christine Anderson were amongst the dedicated volunteers from the Malvern Cancer Support Group out collecting on Friday, August 30th for Daffodil Day. Money collected in the Malvern area on Daffodil Day stays in the area to help people with varying needs while having cancer treatment, or after its conclusion. This assistance can take the form of transport to appointments, meals, grocery vouchers or help around the home. Daffodil Day was a lovely sunny day this year which was a bonus for those collecting, as well as those donating. “This year, as in previous, the Malvern Cancer Support Group co-ordinated their efforts and collected at sites around

district,” reported local Malvern Cancer Support Group spokesperson, Elaine Guy. Guy “From West Melton to Springfield, Hororata and Glentunnel and everywhere inbetween the smiling faces of local volunteers were met with generosity and kindness,” she added. “All the contributing schools in the area joined in to show their school had the biggest heart and a grand total of $8619.80 was generated. Dropping into the Hororata Pub for a legendary Hororata Pie is something many locals and travellers remember as a mustdo from years gone by. The September 2010 earthquakes damaged the Hororata Pub severely, seeing it close its doors as a hotel. This year the Malvern Health & Community Welfare Trust is again happy to be involved with subsidising the Advanced Defensive Driving Course run at Darfield High School. This is an activity that the Trust has supported for a number of years as they believe it provides for safe drivers on the roads. It is also well known that having a driver’s licence means that students are more likely to get employment, particularly in the rural sector. Every year at least fifteen students are grateful to receive a subsidy towards an Advanced

Driving Course. The Course takes place at the School, after hours, and is reported to be very convenient for both students and their parents/ caregivers as there’s no requirement for travel to Christchurch. Advanced Driving Courses are designed to help young drivers identify and avoid, or handle, potential hazards they may encounter while driving. The Course teaches skills that can help reduce the likelihood of young drivers

being involved in a crash, such as eye scanning while driving, hazard detection and risk management. Passing an approved Advanced Driving Course can reduce the minimum age for a full car licence (from 18 years to 17½ years), and reduce the time drivers need to stay on a restricted car licence (by either three or six months depending on age). Approved driving courses may also count towards an NZQA qualification.

Darfield Primary School were recently the recipients of the generous donation of four children’s bicycles, from Fonterra. These bikes were purchased by Fonterra and put together by their staff, as a team building exercise. The School were both appreciative of, and delighted to accept, this kind offer. Darfield Primary School principal, Meredith Devonald, Devonald accepted the bikes from Jason Manning, Manning Process Project Manager, Powder Plant and Ben Robinson, Robinson Powder Plant Manager. The four bikes also came with safety helmets making them an even more amazing gift for the School. The bikes will be available for use during Bike Safety lessons

Students from Darfield Primary School have recently connected with the local community group, Sew Delightful. This group is currently located in a room at the Darfield Community Pool and their purpose is to recycle/ repurpose material that may otherwise end up in landfill. They are also very keen to harness any existing art and craft skills in the community. Aunty Lyn (Lynmaree Sopoaga) and Elizabeth Connor have included Darfield Primary School in their latest project. Whilst groups of students are lucky enough to be learning how to hand and machine sew, they are also contributing to the 4KT project and sewing small, soft toy elephants. Each elephant represents one ton, of the four thousand tons of textile waste thrown out in the Dunedin area (where the initiative originated) each year. These textiles make up 5% of the total waste, and 8% of the carbon emission produced by the Green Island landfill. With awareness growing about the need for people to rethink how they produce and manage waste, and reduce their carbon emissions to slow global warming, the organisers of 4KT have created a project that takes these heavy issues, and makes them... a little lighter! The soft toy elephants are being made all around New Zealand and Darfield Primary School toy elephants will be donated to Plunket Groups and Daycares.

There was an item on television’s Seven Sharp a week or two ago (I’ve put a link to it on Darfield Automotive’s Facebook page) about the worrying trend of vehicles turning up for their periodic WOF inspections and having a lot of items that are worn out and require attention. Over my next few monthly columns I’m going to cover a few of the common items. Tyres: We never tire of talking tyres! NZTA road crash data shows in the last three years, 32 fatalities were linked to worn tyres. At Darfield Automotive we perform WOF inspections under contract to NZTA. The legal minimum for tyre tread depth is 1.5 mm. But we know from experience that once a tyre gets to this level it loses almost all of its performance. In fact in wet conditions, at 1.5 mm of tread, the vehicle takes twice the stopping distance than if it had new tyres fitted. If a vehicle is presented to us with a tyre that has a 2mm tread depth, it will pass, but how long will it still legally comply? The MTA and NZTA are currently running a campaign to inform road users about the dangers of running worn tyres. They are encouraging vehicle users to check their tyres every few months and are asking road users to consider changing their tyres at around 3mm. Tyres are not just round black things holding up your car. I firmly believe that tyres should be matched to people and their driving style, as much as they are physically fitted to their cars. Two Canterbury riders have recently been named in the New Zealand team for the mounted games Nations Team Championship. Leah Zydenbos, Zydenbos of West Melton, and Max Shanks, Shanks of Christchurch, will don the silver fern in October for the Nations Team Championship hosted by Canterbury Mounted Games Association (CMGA). Nations 2019 is the first international mounted games tournament to be held in the South Island. (The equestrian sport of Mounted Games is where very fast competitions are played by people of all ages, on ponies up to a height of 152cm. They require a high degree of athletic ability, good riding skills and hand-to-eye coordination.) At just seventeen Leah is already well versed in the pressure of international competition. In 2017 she was New Zealand’s top under seventeen individual rider and a world beater as part of the New Zealand team who won the Under 17 World Team Champs. Now in her first year at University of Canterbury, Leah has had great success in a variety of equestrian disciplines, but it is the mounted games that remain her number one sporting passion. “I love the strategy of playing to the strengths of each team member and pushing through t h e a dr e n a l i n e - c h a r ge d atmosphere to support our ponies, and each other, during the pressure of competition. It’s obviously very physical, but it’s just as much a mental

Nations Championship heats will be held at Trent’s Vineyard, Prebbleton on October 10th - 11th, with a thrilling final at Ellesmere A & P Show, Leeston on Saturday October 12th. Finals day is sure to bring A and P crowds to a standstill as this exciting sport show cases the world’s fastest mounted games riders. The New Zealand Army Band concluded a memorable appearance at the 2019 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo by being presented with the Pooley Sword, awarded to the performers who have made the greatest contribution to the event. It was the Band’s sixth appearance at the Edinburgh Tattoo, where it performed twenty four times this year in front of capacity crowds. Director of Music Major Graham Hickman said it was a great honour to receive the Pooley Sword award, which was chosen by fellow performers. This year, more than 1,100 performers from across the globe appeared on Edinburgh Castle’s esplanade to entertain audiences at the event. “It’s been a memorable month for the band, with combined live

audiences totalling about 220,000 in front of Edinburgh Castle,” Graham said. “The Band performed exceptionally every day, even under some rather trying weather-related circumstances. The audience response certainly helped - we received a lot of feedback about being the crowd favourite. “Receiving the Pooley Sword topped it all off - it’s very humbling to be recognised in this way by our fellow cast members.” Formed in 1964 as a traditional brass band to perform at state and ceremonial occasions, the New Zealand Army Band has evolved into a unique entertainment unit delivering innovative and exciting musical performances that are in demand around the world.

Known not only for its talent, but also for its unique cultural heritage and a playful kiwi edge to its performances, its repertoire often includes wellknown kiwi tunes, plenty of good humour, and intricate drills. August has been a busy month for the members of Darfield Gun Club. The Club hosted a Double Rise Champs shoot early on in August. 30+ shooters attended the event at the Club. Winners were: Tony Stuart A grade, Peter Askey B grade, Helen Kane C grade and the Deauville Doubles winners were Rupert Wright and Ron Greatorex. Greatorex August 3rd: Duncan Jefferis from Darfield Gun Club entered the Otago Provincials and came away with third prize in the A grade Single Rise. August 16th (Day 1): Once again the Club travelled to Central Otago for three days of shooting at Moa Creek, Alexandra and Wanaka. On day two of the weekend the Club entered two teams in the match, which was held at Alexandra Gun Club. The Bodkin Shield is hotly contested with the match attracting teams from as far afield as Huntly in the North, to Invercargill in the South. Unfortunately not a win for Darfield this year, but congratulations go to Gorge Road Gun Club who took home

the Shield, with perfect scores. Despite the bitter cold conditions Darfield shooters did very well with most of those attending getting ‘possible’ scores and reaching the shoot offs. Darfield Shooters were victorious taking the shield with a total score of 257 out of 300, just three points separated the teams with Ellesmere on 254/300. A good win for Darfield. Sunday, August 25th: Darfield Gun Club hosted the annual National Party shoot. Shooters were out in force with six squads registering. The Hon. Amy Adams MP was competing

The Cricket season is fast approaching and most local Clubs have had their AGM’s and have started planning for the season. “Darfield Cricket Club has retained the same office bearers from 2018/19 and is looking forward to a successful season,” said Club President, Dave Beatty. Beatty The Club’s Premier team was relegated to Senior grade after last season, but has now been re-instated to the Canterbury Country Premier grade following another team’s departure. This season the Club will have a Darfield High School 1st XI team playing in the Metro Competition

and a Year 9/10 team in the Canterbury Country - Mid Canterbury combined grade. This team will be made up of players from all local clubs and will be feeder for players to the DHS XI team. This season’s competition will see teams from most clubs entering in the Section 1 - 4 grades. Section 1 players from all clubs will be feeding into the Year 9/10 team and so on. This new format sees players having a consistent pathway and allows them to play under the District’s local umbrella. It will undoubtedly enhance cricket

in Malvern, as well as giving considerable exposure for the future. Darfield Cricket Club has an Open Day planned soon for potential players to attend. It’s a chance to take advantage of the Prem players present and try-out some skills and drills with them. The Open Day is also an opportunity to register and sign up for the season. Registrations are able to be done online with all local Clubs.

To the Editors: It was with some dismay and sadness that I saw the article about the demolition of the Sicon building in Darfield (by a Mr Bill Woods - whom I’ve never met). What a waste of our ratepayers hardearned money! This building would’ve made a great place for a ‘Mens Shed’ or other facility. Three petrol stations in close proximity - what an overkill. This new facility could’ve been better placed on the junction of Route 73 and Route 72 at Waddington to catch the traffic from both routes. Evidently there was no forethought on this as it appears that the lease money from the petrol station clouded the Council’s vision. An impecunious ratepayer

Malvern Community Board Update Monday 26th August 2019. The Malvern Community Board had its last on-the-road meeting of the year, on Monday night in the Glentunnel Community Centre. Members of the Whitecliffs Township, Glentunnel Township, Glenroy Hall, and Coalgate / Glentunnel Reserve Committees attended to talk with the Board about matters that concern their communities. Council’s Property and Commercial Manager, Douglas Marshall was in attendance. The Chair told community members that nine people received a Community Services Award on Friday night and the Mayor congratulated the Board on the success of the event. Douglas Marshall updated the Board and community committee members about the dump station project in the District, noting that telemetry systems will be installed at most of the sites to help determining when the dump stations were full. Where this is not possible toilet cleaners will assist Council by checking levels. The Mayor encouraged the Board to write to Environment Canterbury to support the bus service between Darfield and

Christchurch. Some of the issues raised by community representatives at the conclusion of the formal Board meeting are listed below: • Potential for a cycleway be-

The Role: Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Heavy Plant Mechanic/Fitter, supported by a team of mechanics/fitters, is responsible for conducting planned and unplanned maintenance of mobile and fixed plant machinery in accordance with the operating plan and daily operational needs. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to expand their skill base and is looking for a change. Being part of a small dynamic team, you will be responsible for repairing, servicing of all mobile and fixed plant, as well as maintaining our light vehicle fleet. Training will be provided. You will also assist fixed and mobile plant service activities to ensure that work is carried out in accordance with the Health and Safety in Employment Act and any other relevant legislation as well as in compliance with company procedures to ensure that equipment failure and downtime is kept to a minimum. Day to Day Duties: • Responsible for planned/unplanned maintenance of mobile & fixed plant machinery • Assisting with the maintenance and servicing of a small Light Vehicle fleet • Ensuring that targets are met, and quality is maintained. Skills & Requirements • Trades qualification in Diesel or Mechanical Engineering (Would consider applicants with other automotive qualifications and or practical experience in a related trade) • Experience working on heavy diesel plant and mobile plant equipment • Good oral and written communication skills • Excellent organisational and planning skills • A strong commitment to Health and Safety • The successful applicant will be willing to work the site roster from Monday-Friday with some weekend work as required.
