T he n ew F ou r Sq u ar e supermarket in Darfield is one of the most high-tech in the country and opened its doors to the public on Wednesday, August 14th.

While Darfield has long awaited this new store it’s also noted that it’s a flagship among Four Squares in New Zealand. It’s the first to roll out new ESL (electronic shelf labels) and LED lighting, along with two selfcheckouts for tech-savvy customers.

The new build kicked off in December last year, and just nine months later has welcomed its first customers. At 1200m² the new store is twice the size of the old one and has over seventy carparks right outside.

The new store not only offers more space, but more products too including an abundance of fresh produce, along with an extensive range of meat, seafood, bakery and deli, as well as Lotto. The new range

also includes hot and cold foodto-go for locals and tourists looking for convenient and delicious take-out meals.

Four Square Group Manager (South Island) Steve Alexander said, “it’s quite remarkable to see the transformation of the Four Square brand, but the one thing that hasn’t changed in our 95 years is our commitment to providing customers with quality products and exceptional community service, of which we’re all extremely proud.”

Four Square Darfield is no exception with local family ties going back three generations.

Store owners Kelvin and Delwyn Taege said the business has been in their family for over thirty nine years, and they are excited to begin their next chapter in a ‘brand new’, modern store.

“Our valued customers are impressed with the variety the shop now has, it’s roomy and has modern technology,” Delwyn explained. “We were very happy with how the opening went and are really enjoying being in the new shop,” she added.

Incidentally store opening day coincided with Delwyn’s birthday.

A quick witted joker at the opening asked Kelvin which event he would remember the most - the opening, or the birthday. Quick as a flash Kelvin quipped - “the birthday, of course!”.

Laser hair removal, also referred to as permanent hair reduction, is the newest service being offered at More For You and clients should definitely be excited as it concludes the endless cycle of waxing, shaving and threading. Laser hair removal is typically done as a series of six to ten treatments at four to six week intervals, based on the area of the body, skin type and hair type.

“It takes fifteen minutes to an hour depending on the treatment area, using a premium high-speed IPL and laser,” Jayne and Sarah clarified.

“The type of laser we use works on all hair types, whether they be thick or fine,” Jayne said.

Selwyn Gallery’s September exhibition “Print, Paint, Make” is an eclectic mix of works by a group of friends, aiming to continue their artistic practises alongside busy careers and family commitments. Opening Friday, August 30th, the exhibition runs until Thursday, September 26th.

Hannah Heslop is empowered by techniques of traditional feminine handicraft and the laborious nature of needlecraft, describing the patient act as a means to constrain a chaotic mind. Theatrically rich embroideries have become her trademark, blending elegant with kitsch, iridescent with matte and glamour with culturally prescribed femininity as she continuously explores her own relationship with the body.

Alice Olds’ inspiration comes from botanical illustration, with the realism and evaluation of plants appealing to her scientific brain. Sourcing and arranging flowers into compositions, she photographs hundreds of close-up images to reference her rapidly changing subject matter and produce her highly detailed paintings.

Alison Staniland is inspired by found imagery and objects along with scientific investigation into nature. She obsessively collects illustrations of nature, cutting and categorising them as biology, zoology, and geology. The resulting montages transform into works which play with the

macro and micro viewpoint.

They represent beauty in nature, but also the human desire for order within it.

Bianca van Leeuwen’s practice is based on the subtleties and grandeur of the natural world.

Locations are repeatedly photographed, dealing with themes of time, place, perception and repetition, focusing on man-made interjections. Progressing from

traditional printmaking to photography, selected images shown here are from an historic bush tramway within spectacular landscapes.

Hannah Wilson enjoys the beauty and ambiguity of mi cr o sc op ic org a ni sm s , highlighting their relationships to each other, the body and the physical world in everyday lives. Working in linocuts, Hannah’s work exhibited here is inspired by shapes and behaviours of stony coral organisms and 1904 illustrations by Ernest Shackleton of the same subject.

Lance Corporal Samuel Puke was nineteen and at a loose end after finishing high school in Brisbane when a friend asked, “why don’t you just do what your Dad did?”

His father, Sergeant Larnie Puke, Puke had served from 19852001 in the New Zealand Army’s Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, mainly in the Reconnaissance Platoon and sniper cell of 2nd/1st Battalion at Burnham Military Camp.

That question provided all the direction Lance Corporal Puke (Tainui) needed to trade the warmth of Queensland for basic training during winter at Waiouru.

Now one of the Army’s newest Junior Non-Commissioned Officers, he has not looked back and never questioned if it was the right move. He marched out with his peers recently to mark the completion of eleven weeks of leadership training at Burnham Military Camp, and received the Regimental Award for consistently displaying the highest regimental standards on the course.

It’s a tough course, designed to transition soldiers from being effective team members who are able to get things done themselves, to being effective team leaders who are able to use the right mix of skills and behaviour to get things done through others.

Born in Lincoln, Lance Corporal Puke attended Darfield Primary

School and started his intermediate education at Darfield High School. After a family move to Hamilton he attended Hamilton Boys’ High, and then after another move he completed high school in Brisbane.

He has always been passionate about general fitness and is a keen rugby player, and loves that the Army requires soldiers to maintain peak physical health.

“Getting paid to keep fit is an amazing part of the job,” he said. “After six years I still can’t believe I get paid to go to the gym.”

His military career has had many highlights, including being deployed in 2016 to Iraq for six months as part of the Force Protection Platoon.

“As a section member I ended up being the Platoon Signaller the guy who works with the radios - but within our team we all filled lots of roles and did whatever needed to be done to maintain security,” he said.

“I loved being over there and I learnt so much. It was an amazing experience.”

On his return to New Zealand, Lance Corporal Puke did a Patrol Procedures course and a six-week sniper course, then joined the prestigious Reconnaissance and Surveillance Platoon, where he is now second in command of a team in the sniper cell.

Family ties to the military are

Despite being deferred, Terrace Station’s first spring open day attracted over 100 visitors, including children and repeat enthusiasts. A welcoming brazier was appreciated by many, but the clear and sunny day, though cool, saw families taking advantage of sheltered spots round the garden for their picnics. It was reported that in the woodlands the masses of snowdrops among the bare trunks of tall trees in the slanting winter sun, made a gorgeous picture. Kate Foster was extremely busy with sales of potted woodland plants - with many keen gardeners making their purchases on arrival to ensure they didn’t miss out. As usual the quiz table was a main attraction for all ages. Kate commented that the entry fee,

combined with plant sales, made a very successful day for the Trust, in spite of having been postponed for a week.

Further open days in September, October and November will ensure that those who have missed out in August will have another opportunity to visit this heritage garden and woodland.

Lance Corporal Puke is looking forward to being back in the platoon at Burnham with his mates and seeing where his new leadership skills will take him next.

“What I’ve found is that if you put in the effort, nine times out of ten you’ll do well, and on the occasions where things don’t go how you expect there’s always a learning experience to help you next time,” he said.

It is now in a landfill with very little salvaged of this ½ - ¾ million dollar building for a third service station in Darfield. If the Councillors sanctioned this they should be charged with wilful destruction.

If the Councillors authorised the staff to demolish the building they are accessories. Selwyn Council has a policy of reducing waste to landfill.

Husband and wife car rally duo Garet and Gemma Thomas from Kirwee have just completed the Mainland Series and have one more round in the New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC) to go. This is the third year the pair have competed together and after the honour of being announced as Rookie Driver and Co-Driver two years ago following their first Mainland event, they were over the moon to have won overall in the 2019 Mainland event.

Gemma was originally introduced to the sport by her dad. Both Garet and Gemma come from motocross backgrounds, but always had an interest in motorsport.

The Mainland series was to have had six rounds, however with the final round cancelled that left final placing points tallied after only five events.

Races that were part of the series took place in Westland on March 23rd, Otago April 13th,

Garet and Gemma in action at the Catlins Rally on August 10th.

They won this stage, which also gave them the overall series win.

Our Nourish meeting this month will feature a presentation from EMNZ (Effective Microorganisms New Zealand). stage. It’s very similar to our car which was heading north for the Rally of Coromandel. This event is part of the New Rally Championship where we are sitting third equal,” Gemma added.

“Heading down to The Catlins Coast Rally, now the last in the series, we really didn't have high expectations. We were just going down to pick up as many points as we could and see where we ended up at the end of the day. The Catlins Rally is very fast and flowing and the locals understandably have a great knowledge of the roads.

Garet prefers the tight and twisty road generally so it really was a wait and see what eventuated,” Gemma explained.

“It was cold, rainy and even a little bit of snow on the roads down there, making it quite slippery in some places too,” she added.

Garet and Gemma were sitting around fifth - seventh, right up until the fifth stage of the day.

They saw some of the leaders either off-road or stopped on this stage. With no cellphone reception Garet and Gemma headed into the last two stages hoping for the best and following a cloud of blue smoke from their nearest competitor.

Both Garet and Gemma knew they were in with a slight chance to secure the Mainland Series, but had no idea until they got to the finish line that they had won! Even then there was some confusion as the leader had stopped and was limping through the last stage.

“So when confirmation came through that we had won, we were absolutely thrilled to have taken our first overall rally win, as well as the Mainland Series Overall Driver and Co-driver.

Next on the cards for Garet and Gemma is the final round of the NZRC Championship, Rally of Waimoto held in October.

The Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Schools Ski Race was held at Mt Cheeseman on Sunday, August 18th.

The annual Primary and Intermediate Race is a fantastic day of racing where children representing their schools, participate as individuals and teams. There are medals for individual age group winners, along with the much coveted overall team trophy for both Primary and Intermediate school teams.

The ski and snowboard race event consists of a dual slalom course for boys and girls of all age groups from Year 1 to Year 8.

The Mad Hatters Tea party at Darfield Library was held on Saturday, August 10th. It was the first of three family fun, tea party, events hosted by Darfield and Lincoln Libraries.

The day was enjoyed by both adults and children who made paper top hats, decorated tea cups and shared afternoon tea. Event organiser Hayley Browne, Browne Selwyn District Arts, Culture and Lifelong Learning coordinator commented that the aim of this fun-filled event was to have a family fun event centred around a popular, cl assi c book.

Integrating literacy awareness into a creative, hands-on activity, bringing a holistic learning approach.

Providing an opportunity for an

intergenerational community activity - grandparents brought children and all ages had fun. This was an informal setting to chat to librarians,

and find out about other activities and resources the library can offer. It was definitely a safe, warm activity for a cold, winter’s day.

Kirwee residents have the opportunity this month to provide feedback on plans for the proposed extension to the Kirwee Recreation Reserve.

A drop-in session is being held on Saturday, August 24th, at the Kirwee Reserve Pavilion.

Selwyn District Council has been working closely with the Kirwee community and Reserve committees over the past two years to engage with local residents, sports clubs and organisations, gathering ideas and input for the

Reserve development.

Those ideas have now been developed into a master plan for the Reserve, which will be available for community feedback this month.

Council property and open space planner Derek Hayes commented that the proposed extension will provide much needed space for both active and passive recreation in the Kirwee area, to meet growing demand for sports fields and community space.

“The community working party has had excellent community and stakeholder engagement at a number of events over the last two years,” he said.

“The plans are now well developed and we are looking for further community feedback to check that we’ve got things about right. We also want to get ideas on any details that people think could be added.

“We’re confident the Reserve extension will be a huge asset to Kirwee, with additional sports fields, community recreation space and facilities that will serve the community as a central hub now and into the future.”

The project will see the existing Reserve, on Tramway Road, extended by 6.5 hectares. The Council purc has ed the additional property in 2011.

The additional Reserve land will also make it possible to realign the existing number two rugby field and provide a second dedicated cricket oval.

Other works will include an open space area that can be used for off-leash dog exercise, informal areas for children’s play, a walkway surrounding the Reserve, and new tree planting with native and specimen trees.

A key part of the proposal is a central community hub that will include playground facilities for all age groups, a basketball half-court and other amenities such as public toilets, formed footpaths, shelter, picnic areas and seating.

Additional car parking will be created along the southern Reserve boundary (next to the existing car parking) to cater for activities taking place within new areas of the Reserve.

There is space allocated for further parking if demand increases in future.

As well as the drop-in session, residents can also view the master plan and other information, and provide feedback, online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/ kirweereserve.

Feedback on the Reserve extension closes on Thursday, August 29th.

Malvern’s Mid Week Open Women’s Hockey team are definitely producing some pleasing results from their Tuesday night games, held in Christchurch/Rangiora. They progressed through to the quarter finals of the competition, which they won, and on August 20th headed into the semi finals versus HSOB/Burnside which they also won 5-0 . Goals were scored by Fliss Cox (2), Sophie Beaumont, Beaumont Emma Harding and Amy Truscott - with Amy Jones in goal. So now it’s on to the finals versus Avon who were successful in their semi against Carlton/Redliffs 5-1.

Playing at Nunweek Park in Harewood, Ngā Puna Wai in Christchurch, or at Rangiora the competition is divided into two round robin stages which have brought forth some great results for the team.

The quarter finals saw them bring in a 3-0 win against Southern in preparation for the semis this week.

A group of engineering professors were invited to fly in a plane.

Right after they were comfortably seated, they were informed the plane was built by their students.

All but one got off their seats and headed frantically to the exits in maniacal panic.

The one lone professor that stayed sitting calmly in his seat was asked: “Why did you stay put?”

“I have plenty of confidence in my students.

Knowing them, I can assure you this plane will never even start.”
