Selwyn District Council and fuel supplier NPD have confirmed plans for a service station to be developed on land adjacent to the Darfield Library and Service Centre.

Resource and building consents have been granted for the redevelopment of the Councilowned site on South Terrace/ SH73, formerly occupied by the offices of Sicon Ltd. The site will be developed as a self serve service station to be operated by NPD, and will include a fuel forecourt with six self-service double-sided pumps, and plans for a retail store in the future.

Sicon recently vacated their Darfield office to move to new premises at Izone, Rolleston.

The existing Sicon office building will be removed off the Darfield site.

Selwyn District Council retains ownership of the land and will lease the site to NPD. The development will be undertaken and funded by NPD. The project will include landscaping and road improvement works in front of the library including extending the existing kerb and channel, and closing off the slip road accessway immediately in front of the library, which will improve safety for motorists. Road widening will also be undertaken on Ritso Street to improve the intersection with SH73.

The Darfield Community Response Team (DCRT) held their ‘High Tea’ event on July 27th at the Darfield Recreation Centre. The Tea was well supported by approximately forty street contacts who took the opportunity of meeting others in the same role, as well as those who wished to learn more about what street contacts do and their function in the community.

Those who attended enjoyed a high tea which included a wonderful selection of sandwiches and delicious scones. The Darfield Team Leader for DCRT,

Andrea also reminded everyone to prepare their emergency survival kits, as preparedness is key to community resilience in the recovery phase of a natural disaster.

Selwyn Gallery continues its community programme this month, showcasing the work of Darfield based studio, Creative Sparks.

Creative Sparks are committed to providing quality art and music education for all ages, sharing knowledge and skills to build confidence, individuality and engagement. Students are exposed to a range of styles and processes, often using other artists work as a starting point while being encouraged to embrace their own imagination to stand out from the crowd.

Creative Sparks’ students have chosen their favourite pieces to exhibit, ranging from landscapes to mixed media and collages. A collaborative piece, The Dot Tree, represents

Eboni Lawrence recently exhibited her work as part of the Darfield High School senior art exhibition, Surface, at Selwyn Art Gallery (miscommunication saw this piece incorrectly attributed to another artist in last week’s News). Her pencil drawing of a small African boy was extremely popular with the public and quickly sold on the opening night. Eboni has now left Darfield High School to pursue study in pre-Health Science, but while at school, was a successful art student with a particular talent in drawing and painting. Although Eboni is pursuing her nursing studies, she is continuing to draw and paint in her spare time and welcomes any commission work from the public.

The snowdrops are flowering for the first spring open day at Terrace Station’s heritage garden and fifteen hectare woodland, to be held on Sunday, August 11th. However winter roses - hellebores - will remind visitors that winter is not quite over yet. In September violets and primroses will abound, while in October it’s the turn of bluebells and daffodils.

November sees aquilegias, banks of trilliums, foxgloves and other early summer flowers to delight photographers. This garden is reported to be an oasis for birds, butterflies, bees and other insects which so often modern farming systems do not provide the environment for.

The garden is a haven for people who want to visit a peaceful arbor to retreat from the stresses of modern life and the woodland walkway highlights magnificent 150 year old sequoias and oaks. The renovated summer house will showcase some historic gardening and farm tools, the uses of many being somewhat mysterious and the cause of lively debate. A much loved

feature of the spring open days is the quiz table which displays fascinating nineteenth century domestic items for viewers to mull over. There are self guided activities for children and visitors are welcome between 11am and 3pm.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawns and in case of wintry temperatures a welcoming brazier will warm fingers and toes. Woodland plants

will be for sale.

The $5 entry fee goes to the Terrace Station Charitable Trust, children’s entry is free, however no eftpos facilities are available.

There will be signposts from Hororata roundabout and organisers request that dogs be left at home.

What an absolute treat to hear Canadian soprano Emily Steers perform at Trinity Church on Sunday afternoon. Emily explained each section of songs with anecdotes of the composers and a brief translation of those sung in French, or German. For the first par t, t he a ud ie nc e of approximately seventy, enjoyed a variety of songs written by female composers, including a set of short songs written by twentieth century New Zealand composer Dorothy Freed.

Freed Emily’s favourite composer Pauline Viardot moved in illustrious artistic circles around Europe, counting fellow composers, Rossini and Robert and Clara Schumann as friends.

The three Viardot songs were sung with great emotion and beautifully enunciated words. It was wonderful hearing songs written by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Hensel sister of famous composer Felix Mendelssohn.

Mendelssohn Fanny’s music was equally as melodic and romantic as her brother’s, but in the nineteenth century musical women weren’t taken to be as seriously gifted as their male counterparts!

The Sound of Music began the second half of Emily’s performance, dedicated to Classical and Musical Theatre favourites. This was followed by The Light in the Piazza, written

by American Adam Guettel, Guettel grandson of famed Richard Rogers, Rogers who co-wrote Sound of Music and many other well known musicals. Emily announced her personal

We were given a bonus in having Emily sing an encore: the magical and well known Vilja Aria from the Merry Widow. John Linker accompanied Emily on piano, matching the dynamics and drama in the songs perfectly. John is Director of Music at Christchurch Transitional Cathedral and with his vast choral experience, was an ideal accompanist. Emily will be starting a Masters degree in Community Music at Laurier University in September.

Hours of operation are currently limited to Tuesday and Thursday mornings and there are usually around a dozen members in attendance. While some have builder/carpentry or engineering experience, there are a wide range of people including farmers and professionals. We welcome new members whether they fit the ‘retired’ category or not.

There is currently a Community Board project to produce some wooden toys for Santa to give this year, and the Council Community development office have commissioned a supply of ‘Fairy doors’ to be located at McHugh’s Forest that will add interest to small children using the tracks there.

Also of note is the Annual Meeting of The Friends of Darfield Hospital Charitable Trust, which will take place on Wednesday, August 28th at T ri n i ty C hu rc h. A nyo n e interested in finding out more about The Friends and their activities, or considering joining them, is invited to attend.

Currently The Friends of Darfield Hospital have twenty regular members, some of whom have served outstandingly for over twenty five years. Full reports will be given at the meeting, and Chris Bond a new member of the team, will speak on Nursing and Medical Care in the Pacific Region.

“Many local residents will have noticed recently, that the Hospital has acquired a new roof,” Friends spokesperson, Brian Davidson commented.

“We are delighted with this initiative, and also with the addition of a generator to provide an emergency power source, plus a new modern front door,” he added. “We are most grateful to the CDHB for these very welcome improvements. We also thank Nurse Manager Leanne and her team, for continuing to provide great care for patients, and for being so welcoming to visitors,” he concluded.

WRIGHT AGRI CONTRACTING Guests of the Friends of Te Ara Kākāriki meeting showed up to Lincoln University on the evening of Wednesday, July 24th eager to hear about the Trust’s work and to listen to guest speaker Lan Pham.

Te Ara Kākāriki chair Craig Pauling greeted guests with a mihi before acknowledging Selwyn Mayor and Deputy Mayor Sam Broughton and Malcolm Lyall.

Lyall Malcolm was previously a trustee of Te Ara Kākāriki and was joined in the audience by two founding members, former trustee Francis Schmechel and Patron Ian Spellerberg.

Spellerberg Craig spoke of the Trust’s beginnings in 2006 and how he, Frances and Ian, along with several others, had become frustrated at the lack of action restoring biodiversity in Canterbury. Volunteering Whenua Hou island Craig was alerted to the lack of biodiversity on the mainland upon his return home.

When he spoke to others, he found there was a lack of action and so the Trust was formed with the purpose of creating a native greenway linking the mountains to the sea.

The first Greendot wasn’t planted until three years later in 2009 at the Greendale Golf Course in the middle of the proposed Greenway. That year 1000 native seedlings were planted by volunteers and trustees and so began the Annual Canterbury Plantouts.

Craig showed a map of the 78 Greendots planted so far with assistance from the Trust.

Greendot landowners at the Friends of Te Ara Kākāriki meeting on Wednesday, July 24th held at Lincoln University. not only to learn native fish existed, but that they weren’t protected. This inspired her to do her masters degree on controlling predatory fish.

With her masters complete, Lan founded the Working Waters Trust, filling a gap in native fish conservation which bought her to Canterbury.

Currently running for reelection, Lan described the privilege and pain of being a councillor. She spoke of her concern at recent changes proposed to acceptable water nitrate levels and the harm that not reducing these by enough could have on Canterbury residents and ecosystems.

At the end of the evening, Greendot landowners were invited to receive a plaque for installation at their property showing their site is part of the Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway.

About a dozen landowners came up on stage pointing out their site on the map and sharing some of their experiences.

Brian Patchett pointed out his Springston site saying he had recently planted his fourth lot of native seedlings at the property.

On Friday, August 2nd, four Scout Groups, each with a team of six shooters from the Torlesse zone, got together for the annual Zone Smallbore Competition, held at the Darfield Rifle Range.

This competition began in 1953, under the Selwyn District zone name and ran until 1968.

In 1984 the competition restarted again and in 1997 was renamed the Deans’ District Shooting Competition, with another name change in 2008 to the current Torlesse Zone Shooting Competition.

This year the competition was won for the second year running by Darfield Scouts with a score of 502.6. Darfield provided the highest overall top shooter for the fourth year running with a score of 93.3, out of a possible maximum of 100.10, shot by Liam Barnhill.

On Sunday, August 4th Malvern Netball hosted the annual tournament against Hurunui Netball Centre at Darfield.

Malvern fielded teams in the following grades: Senior, Under 17, Under 15, Under 15 Development, Primary and Primary Development.

All except one Malvern Team won all their games this year resulting in Malvern receiving the Shield for only the fifth time since the tournament began.

Invitational teams from Cust, Fernside, Revelations and West Melton also attended, which ensured all teams had two games to play on the day.

I’m at the library, and for some reason, when I plug my flash drive into the computer, it doesn’t show up.

I keep trying, but nothing happens.

As an IT major, I know I can figure this out.

So I spend 15 minutes changing settings and inserting and removing the flash drive.
