Six students from Darfield High School have designed and produced a Mental Health Cookbook as part of their year 13 business studies class in conjunction with the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES). YES is an opportunity for students to unleash their inner entrepreneur and experience the start-up business world first hand. It is an experiential programme where students set up and run a real business. Each YES company creates their own product or service and brings their idea alive. There is $25,000 in national prize money up for grabs as well as

tertiary scholarships. YES students have opportunities to attend national competitions and events and go on overseas trips. Darfield High School has two other groups also participating in the Young Enterprise Scheme,

The Thirsty Caravan is a vintage 1985 Oxford caravan that has been lovingly transformed into a boutique pop-up bar and it’s reported that, she really can go anywhere! Anyone planning their wedding? Organising a party? Or celebrating an engagement? What about those up and coming corporate functions that needs that extra something special? The Thirsty Caravan can be just that! Both owners Hannah Mentink and Brenton Connell brought the Caravan in April this year and both still work full time, seeing The Thirsty Caravan as their side venture. “We are both really busy and The Thirsty Caravan gives us something that we can do together as a couple,” Hannah and Brenton commented enthusiastically. Hannah has her duty managers license which has been a real bonus for the pair, while Brenton adds jokily, that he has spent a fair amount of time on the other side of the bar which is almost as helpful. Brenton is a mechanical engineer in Methven and Hannah runs a nannying business, ‘New Zealand Nannies’. The pair are excited to see where The Thirsty Caravan takes them. “We have enjoyed the experience so far

They both agree that so far, they have had a pretty smooth run getting it up and operational. With loads of support from friends and family and they are surrounded by some great business mentors. “We both enjoy a drink and a bit of banter, and running The Thirsty Caravan you get to see this sort of thing happening in different circles! It’s really fun to be a part of and we just want to help make the event even more enjoyable! It’s great that we can do it together, stressful at times but honestly it’s just great to be doing something different, meeting new people and enjoying each other’s company,” they commented

smiling. They have received some very positive and encouraging feedback so far. Their first gig was for the Irish Business Network New Zealand and their most recent party was an intimate fiftieth in West Melton where the guests got to enjoy a few cocktails. Emily Steers is a soprano from Guelph, Ontario, Canada, who recently graduated from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Music. Having just completed a tour of the Maritime provinces with the Rubrum Aurum early music trio, she spent June with Long Reach Opera Workshop as Barbarina in their production of Le Nozze di Figaro. In New Zealand, Emily has performed at the Transitional Cathedral noon concert series this past week and the same concert is being hosted in Darfield this Sunday (August 4th). Her accompanist is John Linker, Linker the Director of Music at the Transitional Cathedral. Why choose Darfield for the Concert? Because Emily is the niece of local Anglican vicar, Susan Baldwin. Emily has been fortunate to receive numerous scholarships for academic and performance achievements, including the Mary T. Walshman Award, for a promising young singer, and the Ethel Peake Memorial Prize, for vocal excellence.

The daughters in Fiddler on the Roof singing the enchanting ‘Matchmaker’ song, wishing for a good match for them in life. Fiddler on the Roof is set in the early twentieth century, amid huge turmoil occurring in Russia. It tells the story of a simple Jewish family headed by the strong patriarchal figure of ‘Tevye’ played by Dayle Stoliker. Stoliker The simple life full of traditions and lifelong customs is being challenged as modern ideas and ways find their way into the remote Russian village of Anatevka. This is a long show, running at over two and a half hours, but there is plenty of action to keep people going, with full cast scenes, monologues and duets. The story unfolds in the village street with the powerful rendition of ‘Tradition’ by the whole cast, followed by the daughters (Lauren Lauren Moore, Moore Izzy Tocker, Tocker Katelyn Knight, Knight Katriel Thomas, Thomas Kate Morris) Morris singing the enchanting ‘Matchmaker’

song, wishing for a good match for them in life. The show has many comedic moments as well, from the drunken ‘L’Chaim’ with the fabulous Russian dancers, the ‘Dream’ with the haunting, to the argument over chickens at the ‘Wedding’ followed by the amazing Bottle Dance performed by Toby and Ed Stott, Stott George Long, Long Thomas Soper and Brock Cottrell and choreographed by Melody Hoglund. Hoglund A true highlight is the seventeen piece orchestra conducted by musical director Diane Coad, Coad all snuggled below in the orchestra pit. The sound is amazing and very few societies have the space for an orchestra of this size or to source such talented musicians. Official production photographer, Rex Coad said,

“he has seen a wonderful growth in all of the members of the cast, right from being photographed for their ID, through to finally performing on the stage. Established seniors through to first-time performers, young and old, all perform their roles with great gusto and confidence.” The show has been superbly and skilfully directed by Kirwee Life Member - Mabel Knight, Knight who also performed in the original Fiddler, 40 years ago. She has brought the pages of the script ‘to life’. Fiddler on the Roof is a musical suitable for young and old alike, with a cast ranging from twelve to over seventy years in age, it has something for everyone. Don’t miss it!

The stories included are a good way for people to see what others have been or are going through. The helpful tips are there to help people positively increase their own mental health. The group has gathered a variety of different recipes from people all over New Zealand and were fortunate to receive a recipe for, ‘Fish with Eggplant, Almond and Preserved Lemon,’ from New Zealand’s current Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Ardern This group is donating 20% of their book price to the Mental Health Foundation who cover all aspects of mental health and wellbeing. They take a holistic approach to mental health,

promoting what they know makes and keeps people mentally well. Last term NZ HAPPY had to do their pitch presentation on their Mental Health Cookbook to the YES judges and advertised their product at the Ara YES product launch and market. There are five YES challenges that each company needs to complete:

On Sunday July 21st, Professor John Cookson, Cookson Canterbury University presented the 2019 Canterbury History Foundation Rhodes Medal to Gordon P Dennis, Dennis of Glenroy. The presentation took place at a ceremony at the University of Canterbury. This award was founded in 1999 to encourage and support research, publication and interest in history within the wider Canterbury region. Gordon’s award is in recognition of his contributions toward the Hororata Historic Society, the rebuilding of Coton’s Cottage and the establishment of the Hororata Museum. In addition, Gordon was recognised for sharing his knowledge of local

history across the years through meeting with numerous visitors to the Museum and Cottage and in the writing of his

design phase of the project. There will be opportunities for the wider community to be involved in this process as it continues. By October this year, they aim to have the master plan and concept designs for the community centre complete. The Malvern Community Board met on the evening of Monday, July 22nd and it was a full meeting, in part due to the fact that it did not meet in June. Council’s Community Relations Manager, Denise Kidd, was in attendance as was Ben Rhodes, Team Leader Strategy and Policy. Ben told the Board that the Selwyn District Plan Review was still on track. The draft document has just been finalised and will be signed off by Councillors this week, at the last District Plan meeting of the year. Denise presented the managers’ report to the Board, and spoke about a number of things her team was currently working on. She noted the end of year measures in terms of various activities noting for example that the Selwyn Aquatic Centre target was to get 300,000 people through the doors but the total was actually 385,000 plus. Community Centres had a target of 150,000 people through the doors but a total of 288,318 people visited the centres. She also referred to the Meet your Street initiative. She presented a Business Directory and told the Board that it had been greatly enhanced and that 1,300 businesses were now listed. In terms of Service Level Agreements, Denise said that a number of community committees had already signed up and that staff was still in contact with others. Lastly she referred to the upcoming Council Call, expected to be published in August and noted a couple of the items which will be discussed in the newsletter. In general business, the Board approved an application for a discretionary funds grant and discussed the community services award event which will be held on Next meeting Friday, August 23rd. The world of truffles has always been wrapped in a haze of mystique. Tresillian Truffles based in West Melton, is one of the largest Bianchetto White truffiere’s in New Zealand. Tresillian Truffles is located in West Melton on the site of what started as the Tresillian sheep run in 1851. The light sandy free draining soils made it challenging for growing pasture, but is perfect for the Bianchetto truffle. Prior to the truffles being planted in 2003, testing showed that the existing PH was 5.9, so twenty tonnes of lime was spread on the block (1.5 hectares) to raise the PH to optimum PH of 7. Tresillian Truffles is owned and operated by the Williams family who have been in the district for fifteen years. They purchased the property three years ago and discovered that truffles were being formed on the roots of the trees. All the family have achieved their apprenticeship in pruning, with Stephen swinging on the end of a chain saw and Lisa, Lisa Sarah (15) and Samantha (17) very handy with the loppers cutting out seven meter long suckers from the hazelnuts. As everyone has been so actively involved with the development of the truffiere they are all able to support each other in the different aspects of the business. This includes having turns being the truffilio (finding th e tr uff le s ), cl e an i ng, packaging the truffles, and developing products. The Williams family were proud to be actively involved in the fifth Canterbury Truffle Festival this year where Canterbury’s truffle growers, chefs, restaurants and top wineries come together to create amazing dishes paired with exceptional wines. The festival ran from July 13th to 28th, the peak time of the Bianchetto White Truffle season. The truffle has been described as the fungus that is worth more than gold. Tresillian Truffles Bianchetto (Tuber Borchii) truffles are nurtured carefully in optimum conditions on the roots of their oak, hazel nut and pine nut trees which have been inoculated with truffle spores. The shape is globose, and very uneven, with pale yellow or ochre coloured skin. It varies from the size of a pea through to the size of an egg.

That was certainly the case at Kirwee Model School (KMS) during the school holidays when the Friends of KMS organised a playground working bee. The Friends group had put in months of fundraising, planning and preparation leading up to the day. This hard work was recognised by the amazing turn out of KMS families, friends and local businesses who came along, and by the organised

chaos of adults, children, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, diggers, tractors and trucks. Not only was it fantastic to be a part of such a fun, productive day, it was also great to know we were creating something that our students will enjoy for years to come. There were many excited faces as the children and their whānau arrived at school on the first day of the term. Comments

such as, “this is fantastic!” and “cool” were heard. Children eagerly waited for their break times so they could head off and explore the new and exciting spaces that had been created. Amazingly, this is just phase one of the playground revamp (albeit a very big part!) and the Friends of KMS still have a few more surprises to come. On behalf of the School and the Board of Trustees, I’d like to say a BIG thank you to everyone who came to lend a hand and a special mention to the businesses who gave their time, resources and expertise.

Darfield played Southbridge in the Division 1 final for the Coleman Shield at Prebbleton on Saturday, July 27th. It was a closely played game with Southbridge narrowly take the win 16 - 12. There were many action packed moments throughout the game with the final five minutes being the biggest influence on who won the final. Southbridge scored the first points on the board in the eleventh minute, but a surging counterattack from Darfield’s Brent Dalley saw Darfield hot on attack which lead to Sheldon Reed scoring. At the twenty six minute mark the teams were tided, 5-all, for the remainder of the first half there was a strong battle at halfway with no further points added to the score board. The second half didn’t get off to a great start for Darfield with them putting the kick-off out on the full and then they had to produce some strong defence to try and shut Southbridge down. The pressure was building for both sides and with a third penalty in the passage of play saw Darfield opt for a tap which allowed Scott McIlroy to score a try with the help of his brother Blair driving him over the line, the conversion was converted by Sean Carston. Carston The lead didn’t last long with Southbridge fighting back. A few things didn’t go Darfield’s way and Southbridge capitalised on this taking the win narrowly from Darfield. A tough close game for both teams in an exciting action packed final. The West Melton U14.5 team also played in their finals on the weekend against Lincoln competing for the RT McMillan Shield. The West Melton team came away with the win, beating Lincoln 87 - 10. “Well done to the team, coaches, management, parents and supporters - a great way to finish the season,” said a spokesperson from the West Melton Rugby Club. The West Melton team have had an amazing season remaining unbeaten. What a fabulous achievement for this team. Congratulations from the team at the News.

The submitted films for the ‘Focus for Future’ Selwyn Environmental Short Film Awards must be in by the end of August. These awards are organised and hosted by Lincoln Envirotown. Previous years have always seen film teams busy with their productions during the month of August and last year no fewer than nineteen short films were produced for this thought provoking and enjoyable competition. The Awards will be presented mid September at the Lincoln Event Centre. At this presentation the films are viewed and it is always an ‘Oscar’ like occasion. Category Awards ranging from Kindergarten to adult entries are given with an overall prize which last year went to a Lincoln High School team. “The age of phone cameras has meant that we can all be film producers and actors and we encourage everyone to think of

Local shooter Ben Sharp competed in the South Island Secondary School Clay Target Championships on Saturday, July 6th in Invercargill. Ben competed along with over two hundred other students from about twenty six secondary schools from all around New Zealand. The event was hosted by the Southland Clay Target Club, “what a day it was! a perfectly still day with not a cloud in the sky (yes it was in Invercargill!),” commented Ben’s Dad Johnny Sharp. Sharp With an 8:30am start and perfect conditions it was reported that the air was full of excitement. First match of the day for the South Island Championships was Skeet. Skeet shooting is a recreational and competitive activity where participants, using shotguns, attempt to break clay targets mechanically flung into the air from two fixed stations at high speed from a variety of angle. Next on the cards was the 20 target Single Rise match (20 targets at which each shooter has two shots at each target), Ben along with ten other

targets) to qualify for the final shoot off. Following Single Rise was the Points Score match, (3 points for a break, 2 points for a break with the second barrel and no points for a miss). Ben shot a near perfect score

placing shoot off as the event had been won outright with a single perfect 60/60 score by Harry Green of St Andrews College. The final match of the Championship was Single Barrel, a 10 Target round with only a single shot at each target. Nine shooters along with Ben shot a possible (all targets) and qualified for the shoot off. The Shoot offs commenced and Ben was beaten early in both the Point Score and Single Barrel events. Distraction could easily have been blamed at this stage of the day, as the results on the scoreboard were available for all to see and people could work out who had won the much revered High Over All (HOA) for the day. Rumours had quickly made there way to Ben that he had taken out the HOA outright. The High Over All rewards the most consistent shooter who scores well in all disciplines of the Championship. The ensuing smile had come at a cost after failing to fire in the last two shoot offs, but after regathering his concentration Ben went on to win the Single Rise shoot off after a lengthy 109 Targets! and with it the South Island Championship title. The prize giving soon confirmed the rumours, that Ben had indeed won the HOA, successfully defending his 2018 title and on top of that Ben was only the second student to do this in the Secondary School Clay Target Shooting Championship’s nineteen year history! “A very enjoyable and successful weekend,” concluded Johnny. Ben would like to thank his coach and the Southland Clay Target Club for a well run event and all the generous sponsors for supporting the Championship.

The 26th annual Malvern Game Hunters compeAAon, held last weekend, saw around the same number of registraAons as last year. Approximately 200 hunters bagged a good number of large, impressive animals for the weigh in on Sunday at the Coalgate Tavern, which saw people from all over the South Island a=ending. The average boar weight was down at 44.8kg, compared to 52kg last year and the heaviest boar at 72.5kg, only half a kg up from last year. The heaviest Red and Fallow stags, Chamois and Wallaby weights were also up slightly from last year.
