Local Kirwee equestrian rider Gus Thompson (17) has been selected as one of five New Zealand show jumping riders and the only South Island rider, to represent New Zealand in Ching Chan, China in August. Gus lives with her family on their fifty acre farm that is focussed on equestrian pursuits. Currently they have twenty two horses on the property, most are show jumpers, with hunters and the ponies for their Camp business. Gus is currently employed by Selwyn Rakaia Vets, but also does horse racetrack training early in the mornings. The summer time will see her out mustering and throughout the school holidays Gus and her sisters run a holiday horse camp, which is thoroughly enjoyed by those attending. Gus heard about the opportunity to represent New Zealand via Facebook, met the age criteria (eighteen or under) and submitted a video riding a variety of mounts. A week later the exciting news came that she had been selected. “I was extremely excited as I have never ridden at a show outside New Zealand, so it will be an great eye opening experience,” she said. Gus will be riding a borrowed horse in China and
really has no idea what type of horse to expect. She has been asked if she would prefer a big and strong horse, or a fast and fiery one; her selection was for the fast and fiery! She was also offered two jump height options, 110cm or 120cm and decided to opt for the safer option of 110cm.
ISSUE 899 Friday 26th July 2019
If things go well in China Gus has the chance of qualifying to go back later in the year and jump higher. In the meantime she will have a few valuable days to get used to her borrowed horse before the competition. Gus has been focussing on her training lately by riding
numerous different types of horses and attempting to acclimatise herself for what may be provided in China. “I want to be able to give my best performance when I get there, so I am putting in the hard work now and hopefully it pays off,” Gus concluded.
