On Sunday, July 14th St John Malvern were delighted to share a church service with the congregation of Trinity Church, Darfield celebrating sixty years of St John in Malvern. Youth and adult members attended the service and were able to rededicate themselves to the Order of St John. Peter Cattell addressed those gathered at trinity Church about his reasons for joining St John. “My story starts back in the mid 90’s when I worked for a company who required their staff to have a workplace first aid certificate. The course to obtain this was held in the old St John building in Currie Street, Darfield which had previously been the Malvern County Council Chambers. The group was instructed by Arthur Marsh, Marsh who was a wonderful tutor with a good sense of humour and he told many stories from his days as an ambulance officer for St John Malvern. After getting

through the course, thanks to Arthur, I was encouraged to join the Brigade here in Malvern that was twenty two years ago,” he explained. “I really liked the variety of work involved, the friendships that developed and the distances it took us all over the County and Christchurch. I value being able to care for others in a real way and I get a feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction, being allowed into people’s lives to help them. Giving to others gives me a sense of being of value and it gives me a sense of doing something worthwhile. I also value working as a team. “We meet people in all sorts of states, mentally and physically. Some of the most challenging jobs for me to get my head around are suicides, or attempted suicides. I can’t even begin to imagine the despair and hopelessness these people are going through.
