New venture Kat Lea Coffee is owned by Hororata based Leanne Hadfield and Oxford’s Kathryn Hunter. Hunter Both Leanne and Kathryn are mums that needed to find work to fit in around children and give them the flexibility to help their husbands when required. Kathryn and her husband Wayne are dairy farmers and their two, avid, rugby-playing, children attend Darfield High School. Not surprising that the children are such rugby fans as mum Kathryn also coaches the Darfield High School girls’ rugby team. Leanne and her husband Nigel live just out of Hororata and raise beef cattle on their property. Nigel also runs his own business Malvern Air Conditioning and Electrical in the greater area. Nigel’s daughter attends Darfield High School, while the couple’s two children attend school in Hornby. Not only is Leanne kept busy by her involvement on the area committee for St John, but also all three children play different sports - rugby, football and hockey! Kat Lea Coffee got off to a busy start at both Darfield and Oxford’s Rugby Club Days, followed by a horse event at Rangiora and two days at St Bernadette’s School, Hornby attended by Leanne’s boys.
“We were well supported at all these events and had lots of positive feedback,” Leanne commented. “We’re really looking forward to attending many more events now we’re over the initial opening.” Currently Kathryn is Kat Lea’s barista having had previous experience in this line of work on the West Coast. Leanne plans to get some Barista training under her belt in the near future, which will open up more options for the business. The pair spent considerable time researching coffee beans for their venture. Wishing to focus on as local a supplier as they could, but not wanting to compromise on quality and taste. They settled on Three Llamas coffee beans, roasted in
Woodend, only available to a small number of outlets and readily accessible. Prior to being Kat Lea Coffee the van was in use in Timaru, but used more for cakes than coffee. Leanne and Kathryn added their own personalised touches, included their Kat Lea logo, and were good to go. The pair aim to provide a service at events that currently don’t have coffee facilities ie school athletics, pony clubs, sports’ club days, or larger birthday parties etc. In fact wherever people would like to enjoy good quality coffee. “We have permits and verification, so can work across various Councils,” Leanne commented.

Darfield Village Meats celebrated its one hundredth day in business by surprising a regular customer with a bumper pack of free, fresh meat. “Starting a business is challenging, the hours are long and the pressure is on to make it work,” explained co-owner Blair Wards, Wards who has over twenty five years experience as a butcher. “There's been a butcher’s shop in Darfield for many years and we think it is important that local businesses/ specialist retailers have a presence in the heart of our community. I’d like to think that we are helping to play a part in that and we look forward to many more milestones after this, our first one hundred days,” he added. “We just randomly selected a name from amongst our regulars to reward them for their custom,” Blair explained. The exhibition ‘Surface’ is a collaborative show featuring the work of Darfield High School art students in years 12 and 13. The art displayed in this exhibition is work from terms one and two, when students are beginning to find their feet and explore the initial ideas set out in a self-driven proposal. As the year progresses, students continue to pursue these concepts, working towards the end of the year folio examination for NCEA, due in October/November. Each student at Years 12 and 13 level has elected to work in a particular field for NCEA.

Choices on offer this year were sculpture, printmaking, photography and painting. After selecting their theme, the students explore a variety of established practice to inspire their work. Themes this year range from Greek myth, conservation, self portraiture and the farming landscape. Having the exhibition at this point in the year is a rewarding break for senior art students creating an opportunity to stand back and enjoy their accomplishments. Showbiz Christchurch have offered to help local community theatre group, Kirwee Players with the loan of crates of costumes for the Players’ Fiddler on the Roof show opening on Friday, August 2nd. Wardrobe mistress - Isabell Stott is understandably relieved by the offer, as the job of costuming the whole cast is huge. The production requires
several costume changes for each cast member, resulting in hours and hours of work, adjusting and fitting. “It is great to get help from other theatre groups and that is what helps keep theatre alive, as the costs are crazy,” said Linda Gosling, Gosling Kirwee Players President. “We try to work alongside each other in the theatre community, for example,
making sure we don’t clash with show dates. Many of the same people go from show to show; it is that addictive,” she added. “Putting on a show is not just about the guys on the stage, there are just as many people working tirelessly behind the scenes. There really is a role for everyone in commu nity theatre,” Linda concluded.

The Great Oxford Garage Sale Trail is back again, and this year promises to be just as exciting for bargain hunters as previous ones. Anyone who loves to fossick around at garage sales looking for a bargain, or an unique find, should definitely head to Oxford on the first Sunday in August. This is the tenth year the event has been organised by Oxford Promotions and on each occasion it has brought hundreds into the Town from all over Canterbury. Last year’s event included over fifty garage sales! On Saturday, July 13th the Darfield High School Motocross team savoured success at the South Island Secondary Schools Motocross Champs, which took place in Timaru. The three top-point-scoring riders from each team contributed to Darfield High School attaining a well-deserved win. DHS sent seven riders to compete with the top three being: Jordy Yaxley, Louis Ridgen and Mason Thompson and their totals gave the School the overall win. Sixteen year old Jenny Walter also addressed those gathered, commenting that while she is now a year 12 student at Darfield High School, she first joined St John as an eager nine year old initially attending the youth division in Rolleston. “My mother Lynda Walter, Walter who is actively involved in St John Youth, opened a division in Darfield and this well-supported Division continues to run with this year being its seven year anniversary.
“St John Youth is a programme which allows those between the ages of 6-18 to experience new things, earn badges, make lifelong friendships and compete in competitions, while learning discipline, confidence, and self respect,” Jenny said. “My St John friends and family have become a huge part of my life and have taught me so much more than first aid, and how to march in a straight line,” she commented. “I am the current deputy District Cadet of the Year for mid-Canterbury and I truly value the work and volunteering I do for St John as I love to give back to the community and the Organisation that has given me so much.” Jenny went on to thank the leaders who give so much time and encouragement saying that sh e h ad ga in ed muc h confidence in her ability to handle stressful situations by
her involvement in St John. After the church service everyone was welcomed to the Bray Street ambulance station where they could not only have their blood pressure and blood glucose checked, but also challenge their CPR skills on the manikins made available for that purpose. Visitors were able to see the skill of the Colour Party who will compete for Mid Canterbury in the upcoming competitions as they paraded the Colour. ADVERT PAYMENTS The South Island School Road Race Championships were held on July 6th - 7th at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, Christchurch with children competing from ages U13 to U20 in the two day event. Individual time trials opened the events on Saturday with each competitor completing a three kilometre loop around the race track. Darfield High School athletes achieved some great results with Austin Earl finishing an o ut st and in g s econ d (6:20.79) in the U13 boys’ race, James Day nineteenth (6:23.43) in the U15 boys, and Ethan Rose seventh (4:55.90) in the U17 boys. “I was really happy with my weekend at the South Islands, stoked to get a silver medal in the time trial and a great experience in the road race, I’m looking forward to next year already,” commented Austin. Sunday was Road Race day, with close racing throughout, in perfect conditions; blue sky and no wind. Each age category raced in a bunch start over the specified distance for their age. This ranged from 10.3 kilometres for U13’s, to 38 kilometres for the U20’s. Day two also saw more great results from Darfield High School students with Austin Earl finishing sixth (18:33) in the U13 Boys - 10.3km, Charlotte Roberts finishing fifth (27:27) in the U15 girls - 15km race, James Day at twenty first (28:06) in the U15 boys - 15 km race and Ethan Rose finishing fourth ( 35:46) in the U17 boys - 25.5km race. Darfield High School was placed twentieth in the Hayden Godfrey Challenge Cup (Team Points Competition). Charlotte Roberts commented, “it was a good race out there and a lot of fun. I tried to make a break in the second lap, dropping a few of the girls off the back of the bunch and then the six of us stayed together till the last lap. Being too far back in this bunch meant I was unable to catch the fourth rider in the main bunch.” Ethan added: “I was happy with my weekend’s racing, seventh in the time trial and fourth in the

Monday, July 15th was momentous for local girl Zara Lowe. She made the decision to have her beautiful, wavy and very, very long, hair cut off to a shorter style. The wonderful hair met the wig makers acceptance criteria and so Zara was able to sell it to them. Zara’s hair has been growing long for many years and after doing some research she found a company in New Zealand who would accept her tresses. Hair had to be at least fourteen inches long, never coloured or treated, and
no salt and pepper grey. An appointment was booked at New Image Hair Studio, Darfield for the big chop. Zara was understandably both excited and nervous when the time came, but having made the decision, she followed it through. A new hairband was needed to be purchased after the cut to keep the now, much shorter, locks in place. “I didn't feel like myself afterwards,” Zara commented, “and my head felt so much lighter.”

Zara then mailed her hair to Freedom Wigs in Dunedin. “I can't wait to show my friends at Glentunnel School my new haircut when School starts again next week,” Zara said with a smile. Freedom Hair don’t accept gifts of hair, but if folk don’t wish to be recompensed for their tresses the company will donate that revenue to a charity of their choice, or subsidise a purchase for someone who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

TM Dance World and Creative Sparks in Darfield have just concluded their second holiday programme. Running for three days this time, the event was full to capacity most days with many familiar faces returning from the original holiday programme, held during the Christmas school holidays. Art and craft sessions took place in the morning with dance filling the afternoon, before chilling out with a movie and popcorn at the end of the day. The programme ran from 9am 4pm each day with the option of

early and late pickups for busy parents. The children created art around a winter theme, exploring the work of Jen Aranyi (a US based artist, illustrator, graphic designer, and photographer whose focus is on brightly coloured, nature-inspired art) and painted little Blue Penguins, as well as creating vibrant snowmen scenes. They also experimented with dye and sgraffito techniques (a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting
colour) to make some stunning snowflakes and gorgeous winter hats. Once in the dance studio, the children took part in three mini-dance classes trying their skills in jazz, hip-hop and acrobatics! Following the programme’s success and the demand for local, creative and engaging childcare options in the holidays, organisers commented that this is likely to be something that will be offered each holiday.

The 2019 World Architecture F e s t iv a l ( W AF ) r e ce n t l y announced their shortlist for this year’s awards. There are twenty New Zealand projects named as finalists in fourteen categories. The Lodge in Canterbury is a planned future project at Flock Hill Station, led by architect Jonathan Coote from Warren and Mahoney Architects and has been shortlisted in the House Future Projects category. Flock Hill is an iconic high country station and has played an important role in New Zealand’s Maori history and the colourful West Coast stage coach days. “Our design for the homestead looks to celebrate and reference the early habitation of the landscape. Consisting of heavy limestone elements that are aligned perpendicular to the view and heavily carved to form nooks for fireplaces, seating and other residential functions,” commented a spokesperson from Warren and Mahoney. Heavy in-situ concrete walls, cast in layers, create rock-like formations. Floating over these rock formations is a singular lightweight lattice framed timber roof.

Pruning Workshop This month Nelson Early, of Greendale, is teaching us the basics of pruning pip fruit trees (apples and pears) for ulGmate fruit producGon and tree health. The first half of the session will involve pruning young trees at the Darfield Community Garden. Next we will move to an established local orchard and prune older trees. This is a hands-on pracGcal workshop and all are welcome. Bring secateurs and pruning saws (opGonal). The simple pitched roof form is a reference to the agricultural use of the land and the utilitarian, but beautiful farm structures and sheds that dot the local landscape. A dramatic and continuous three metre cantilever creates protection at the edge of the interior spaces and the necessary verandah space to the immediate outside spaces. The house is designed to be used in a fluid way, with almost continuous connection between internal and external spaces. Formally, it’s a simple pitched roof pavilion with central living areas and guest’s quarters on both sides. All spaces are arranged in a single linear strip, exposing visitors to views over Lake Pearson and beyond to Sugar Loaf. The material palette is limited and restrained - only glass, in situ concrete laid in thin layers, native timber and stone are used both externally and internally allowing the magnificent views to be the main focus of every space. Shortlist judging took place in London in June this year by a judging panel of international architects and experts. WAF reported that 1,000 entries were made to this year’s awards programme, which is an all-time high. The Festival takes place from December 4th - 6th in Amsterdam. Category winners will be announced in November and will be in the running to win the World Building of the Year and Future Project of the Year awards.

Kidsfest has been an outstanding success in Selwyn. Libraries throughout the District have been humming with plenty of activities to celebrate KidsFest during the school holidays. Map It! workshops have been extremely popular with treasure maps, geographic maps, pirate maps and everything in-between covered. These workshops have extended outside the libraries too and this week headed to Glentunnel and Southbridge. Games have made an appearance each morning at local libraries with giant versions of well-known games being a major hit. Makerstations activities are out each afternoon with a space to get crafty and creative with guided activities or a chance to construct independently. There’s always lots of activities to be found at local libraries, not just throughout the holidays; books and technology - to keep everyone entertained. Add to this regular Babytime, Rhymetime and Storytime sessions, which are continuing to run throughout the holidays and Selwyn Libraries really have something for everyone.

‘No job too big or small!’ The Selwyn Kids’ Market, held as part of KidsFest, took place at the Lincoln Events Centre on Thursday, July 11th, It was reported to be not only fun, but also very, very busy with the 95 stalls available, snapped up well before the event. There were children of all ages running shops, along with buying and selling crafts, secondhand toys and books. In addition to shopping at the stalls, visitors enjoyed the café run by the Lincoln Event Centre staff and Council Youth Events team. They were also enthralled by a time travelling story teller from the 1920’s who made up personalised stories of adventure for the many who stopped to chat and listen. Local Coalgate children Lucy (5) and Teddy (3) Williams attended the market with their dinosaur eggs, hair ties, books, special rocks/gemstones and fairy dust. However the siblings added a kind, wee twist to their market experience. They used the event as a fundraiser to help support the New Zealand Longtail Bat. Both Lucy and Teddy have been learning about New Zealand’s native animals for a while and while they didn’t make mega-bucks from the Market, their mum Laura Williams believes it’s good to practice making a difference from an early age. “They raised thirteen dollars from the Market to donate to Forest and Bird,” Laura reported, “but the larger picture is that of encouraging people to think about these bats so they know how to protect them,” Laura added. Lucy looked at all the native species Forest and Bird were looking after and after much consideration she chose the New Zealand Longtail Bat to raise money for. She thought that maybe a lot of people knew about penguins, but perhaps didn’t have a lot of knowledge about the bats, as they don’t see them very often. “Teddy wanted to fundraise to save the triceratops, but we told

Wednesday, July 10th was a perfect day for children of all ages, and their parents, to join/ race in the Selwyn Sports Trust ‘Beat the Bluff Challenge’ event. Held as part of KidsFest this fun Challenge was held on the Thwaites’ farm in Hororata. Participants competed in teams of two to four, with those under ten, accompanied by an adult. The event was as much about getting around the course as it was about strategy. There were challenges set up on the four kilometre loop and teams could ‘choose’ to complete these thereby earning valuable points. It was a great opportunity for participants to enjoy the outdoors with their friends, and all while having to think on their feet. Competing as a squad, the event encouraged teamwork and problem-solving. Some of the tests that teams had to
contend with included an egg and spoon race, scavenger hunt and food challenges. The winner on the day was not the fastest team back, but the team who had accumulated the most points from the activities on offer. Organisers extend a massive thank you to the Forward Foundation Ambassadors who ran the challenges. The Forward Foundation's mission is to assist young female athletes by creating development and leadership

Selwyn’s economy has continued its strong growth backed by a ‘whopping’ increase in tourist and local spending according to latest economic data. The latest quarterly economic monitor from analysts Infometrics showed the Selwyn economy continued to grow well ahead of national and regional averages. The report showed Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in Selwyn increasing at 4.9% in the year to March 2018 compared to 2.5% growth nationally and 1.6% growth across Canterbury. Selwyn had the largest increase in spending by tourists nationally, up 13.2% for the year, with tourists spending $117 million in the district. It also highlighted a 13.6% increase in electronic card transactions to $89.2 million. Council community services and facilities group manager Denise

Kidd said the figures reflect the positive growth Council has seen. “They’re confirming to us what we know, that Selwyn is a great place to visit, to live and to do business.” The growth in commercial building consents continued strongly with the Council issuing 39 new commercial building consents in the first three months this year with growth expected. In contrast the report showed slowing building by businesses in the wider Canterbury region. Unemployment also stayed at 2.2%, unchanged from the same time last year and almost half the national average of 4.3%. Mayor Sam Broughton commented that the strong figures were a positive reflection of the continuing development and maturing of the district’s economy.
“The report shows how we’re taking advantage of the rapid growth that continues in Selwyn. It’s particularly positive to see visitor and tourism spending increase which helps bring diversity to our economy and highlights what a great place we are to visit and stay.”
