Greendale’s Michael Fraser Milne at the Master of the Quaich ceremony held in April at Blair Castle, Scotland - where he was honoured by the whisky gurus.
At a ceremony held at Blair Castle, Perthshire, Scotland in April this year, local Greendale resident and owner of Christchurch business Whisky Galore, Michael Fraser Milne was made a Master of the Quaich. This prestigious recognition for outstanding achievement in the Scotch whisky industry, comes after Michael had been a Keeper of the Quaich since 2008. Keepers can be made after seven years in the industry, while Masters must first be Keepers for ten years. Described as being akin to a whisky knighthood Michael received the accolade from the international Keeper of the Quaich Society after having spent 26 years as a distributor, educator and retailer of whisky in New Zealand. Keepers of the Quaich are an exclusive nonprofit society based in Scotland, membership is by invitation only, for people with a positive record of association with
Scotch whisky. The society is named for the Quaich, a shallow, two-handled cup that has been Scotland’s traditional drinking vessel for centuries. “Each generation of distillers and master blenders in Scotland are really producing for the next generation. A lot of the whisky they produce they'll never taste. It’s a remarkable, interesting commitment,” Michael noted. Michael is originally from the Strathisla region of Scotland and whisky ‘is in his blood’, with his father (and great uncle) brokering whisky soon after he left school in 1938. His father’s company, HL Milne, consequently sold malting barley seed and barley to distillers. This notable recognition comes more than a quarter of a century after Michael first established an importing business to distribute single malt Scotch whisky around New Zealand.

After 29 years of ownership Malcolm and Claire Bennett have sold the Coalgate Tavern to new owners Ann and Steve Joy. Joy Ann and Steve bring a wealth of hospitality experience with them having been in the industry, on and off, both here and overseas, for seventeen years. The couple operated two pubs in the UK, as well as owned/ operated the Kirwee Tavern from 2013-2016, so locals may well recognise their familiar faces. Both Ann and Steve commented that they love being involved in the hospitality

industry, enjoy meeting new people and offering top-class customer service. “Another draw card for us was that fact that the Coalgate Tavern was freehold not leasehold,” Steve explained, “as a business venture this made the enterprise even more appealing,” he added. The pair have been Coalgate Tavern owner/operators for six weeks now and have really appreciated the welcome and help, from both customers and staff, they’ve encountered. “There has been a few wee changes to the menu,” Ann and
Steve explained, “and these have proved to be popular with diners (see menu in this issue). “We really want to focus on providing great quality food, coupled with outstanding service and at competitive prices,” the pair said enthusiastically. “We’re very much looking forward to the Malvern Gamehunters prizegiving event at the Tavern and currently we have a pool competition
underway. We’re going to get a darts competition started soon and hopefully other local pubs may be keen to join in,” Steve said. The Coalgate Tavern’s function room is available to host events, be they celebratory, or not, and their well stocked bottle store is also open for business. “We’re extremely grateful to Malcolm and Claire who have
maintained the Tavern to a very high standard,” Ann and Steve said. “We intend doing just the same and aim to provide a welcoming, community facility for folk to catch-up and enjoy a drink or a meal. We also wish to thank everyone for their support so far in our new venture.

“I've always loved massage since the first one I experienced in my teens,” said Springfield’s Amy Albon. Albon “I couldn't believe the way I felt afterwards - the tension released, the stress lifted, aches and pains lessened and complete relaxation. It was amazing and all I wanted to do from then onwards is be able to help others in that same way,” she added. Amy studied Beauty Therapy after completing high school because it had a massage component and she commented that although she did enjoy most parts of the course, it was definitely the massage section
that interested her the most. However, after being diagnosed with cancer while living in Perth, Australia and emerging from the other side of that battle - she knew that she wanted to focus on the massage side of things more exclusively. “We moved back to Christchurch and I went on to study therapeutic massage. the older children and offer them the opportunity to experience a night away from home (for some this is their first time away). An evening to enjoy group camaraderie and be pampered alongside their peers with the support and company of the teachers they trust, and know well. This year Darfield Preschool had one sleepover which included both the boys and girls. They all enjoyed participating in a range of activities. Children enjoyed making personalised placemats, having their nails painted and pretend tattoos put on, toasting marshmallows over a camp fire and playing a game of spot light, before enjoying a celebratory dinner. Then it was books before bed and lights out! The evening was a huge success it was reported (adults in attendance deserve medals -
Ed!). “Everyone was understandably tired but it was a small price to pay for hosting this rewarding event,” said a Preschool spokesperson. It was a wonderful social occasion where the children demonstrated creditable selfconfidence and trust in their peers and environment,” they added. “The staff were exceptionally proud of all the
children and the laughter and good times have provided lasting, fun memories.” A couple of quotes from the sleepover were: “This is the best night ever.” And “wasn’t it
great?” Darfield Preschool and Nursery look forward to hosting another sleepover for all their four year olds next year.

Selwyn District Council has received the highest credit rating of any council in New Zealand after being awarded a AA+ by ratings agency Fitch Ratings. The rating is the same as both the New Zealand Sovereign rating and the Local Government Funding Agency for local currency. The rating is a measure of the Council’s ability to meet its financial commitments and the rating means that the Council is at very low risk of defaulting on its loans. In its assessment Fitch Ratings took into account of the strength of the Council’s financial management and of the district’s economy, driven by population growth. Council chief executive David Ward said the rating shows the financial strength of the district and the Council’s work to set
Selwyn up for the future. “This is a reflection of the growth in the Selwyn district, but also of the good work done by the Council in responding to that growth and planning its economic future well. A lot of hard work has been put in by staff to ensure we’re handling our finances in the best way for Selwyn now and into the future
and we’re delighted that is reflected in the rating.” It is the first time the Council has sought a credit rating. The rating will support the significant capital investment it is making to match the booming growth of the district, and the efforts to do this in a prudent financial manner that sets up the district for the future.

Brrr its cold outside. This month I’d like to talk about the three main systems in your vehicle that are affected by the cold. It’s definitely battery season and we have been busy replacing old batteries that are failing; but why do batteries fail when the cold weather rolls in? The most common type of car battery is Lead Acid. The inner workings of a battery require a chemical reaction to store and then release the stored energy. When the Lead Acid battery fluid is very cold it thickens or freezes and this slows the chemical reaction, thus reducing the battery’s output. A battery that is over three/four years old will only have 50-70% of its original capacity. Engine oil is the blood of your
car. Of course it lubricates all moving parts, but it also washes away by -products of combustion (this is why it goes black). It plays a big part in cooling the extremely hot parts of the engine. As oil gets old it thickens and loses a lot of the properties required to protect your engine. When oil is thick and cold this puts extra load on the starter motor and battery during cold starts. The cooling system gets a hard time and is often over looked. The cooling system’s main components are radiator, water pump, hoses, and coolant (water/antifreeze mix). The antifreeze concentration must be checked during regular servicing. Antifreeze isn’t just to stop the freeze part. It also helps stop rust forming in the cooling system,

The Ellesmere Rugby Union’s senior squad has just been announced for the end of season, four matches. Ellesmere will take on Mid Canterbury, Cantabrians and Canterbury Maori in the lead up to the annual Southbridge Shield. The traditional Southbridge Shield clash with North Canterbury is approaching fast and the team will be hoping to claim a win and bring the Shield back. The coaching panel of Mervyn Todd, Todd Ross Soper and Simon Livingstone have named a squad of 32 players, with many included having also been in last year’s squad. There’s also likely to be additional players included as required to cover injuries, while some players may get the call up to play for the Canterbury B team. With there being no Canterbury Country senior or Colts programme this year this is an ideal opportunity for the
Ellesmere Colts to play games in combination with the senior side. At the end of August, the Ellesmere U16 and also the U18 teams will play their North Canterbury rivals and this will act as a trial for the Canterbury Country teams, who will then play in South Island Tournaments. Canterbury Rugby Football Union have adopted a focus on development pathways for the U14’s down meaning there is no representative rugby at this level. The focus is on skill development and keeping players in rugby in these younger age groups. A man visited his ninety-year-old grandpa who lived way out in the country. On the first morning of the visit, the grandpa prepared a breakfast of bacon and eggs. The man noticed a film-like substance on his plate, and asked, “are these plates clean?” His grandpa replied, “they’re as clean as cold water can get them. Just go ahead and finish your meal.” For lunch, the grandpa made hamburgers.
