Adrienne admitted to being overwhelmed when she received a ‘Personal and Confidential’

letter from Government House at the end of March and initially thought she wouldn’t accept. Giving it further thought she decided that if someone had thought her worthy enough to nominate her, then she would be honoured to accept. She was sworn to secrecy, not even family were to be told, until it appeared in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list last weekend. Investiture is set down for September and Adrienne has a choice of one of three venues to attend Auckland, Wellington or Dunedin. Adrienne has held numerous, vital roles in the community and this QSM is fitting recognition for that fact. Congratulations!

After beginning as a local recruiter in Mid-Canterbury, Canstaff has expanded over the years, including opening an office in Sydney in 2013 and has now entered the UK market with the opening of a London office. Whilst the work of St John first started in New Zealand in 1885, based in Christchurch, it was not until 1959 that a dedicated handful of locals started St John in Malvern. Initially the Christchurch St John centre would not support the provision of an ambulance service in Malvern. However, resourceful locals made a case to the Area Hospital Board who acknowledged the large area that would be serviced should have an ambulance. The area then ran from Arthur’s Pass to

the Main South Road and from the Waimakariri River to the Rakaia River. Most of that area remains, although the ambulance can respond to Oxford, Mt Hutt and other locations in the Selwyn Area. All Malvern ambulance staff are volunteers and give many hours of their time to ensure that the community has access to ambulance care. The ambulance staff do up to sixty calls per month with each call amounting to a three hour average. This is a huge time commitment from

New recruits are needed for St John in order for it to be able to service communities with Selwyn Central, Darfield and Leeston currently seeking new volunteers. The Selwyn St John units are currently struggling to cover all the events in the area and really need the help of the community. “We are in desperate need of volunteers to cover community events such as sports events, concerts, field days, school events and ambulance shifts,” commented St John Central area committee chairman John Sunckell. Sunckell Becoming a volunteer is rewarding and gives people the flexibility to choose various roles

and options that work in with th e i r f a mi ly an d w or k commitments. People can give as little as an hour, or as much time as they would like. Becoming a St John volunteer has many benefits, it can help people gain confidence, make new friends and learn new skills. Taking on a new challenge, while playing an active role in the community, can make a real difference to others’ lives. New Zealanders rate in the top five nations in the world for volu nt ee r ing, t h ey fin d tremendous satisfaction in giving their time to make a difference to their communities. They recognise how vital

both volunteers and their employers. St John has always had an amazingly supportive community in Malvern when it has needed monetary support and they would like to share their sixtieth anniversary with their community. The Anniversary will be celebrated in July with a Church Service held at the Trinity Church, Bangor Road, Darfield. This will be followed by morning tea and an open day at the St John Station in Bray Street, Darfield. For those heading along to help St John Malvern celebrate; there will be blood pressure and blood sugar checks. Folk can try their hand at CPR and let the St John QCPR manikin tell them how good they are, they can watch the area’s amazing Cadets drilling, and try to win one of the fantastic prizes on the chocolate wheel. A sausage sizzle will be available, along with a magnificent anniversary cake to be enjoyed.

The popular Kidsfest holiday programme is returning to Selwyn during the July school holidays and Council’s Sport, Recreation and Wellbeing manager Dave Tippett encourages people to book their children in early for preferred events, as they often book out quickly. “We’ve got a wide mix of events this year with new activities, along with favourites from last year. Samoan language week certainly danced its way into Darfield last week along with being highlighted nationally. Local Minister Lynmaree Sopoaga (aka Aunty Lyn) taught eager students in Helen Creamer's class at Darfield Primary School a Samoan dance and some language phrases over a couple of weeks. Aunty Lyn is also a fluent Te Reo speaker as well. School principal Meredith Devonald happily embraced the chance to don Samoan headgear and lei. Aunty Lyn reported that the children had taken note of the Lei installation in the Trinity Church grounds and were excited about sharing what they had learnt about Samoan Language. POOR CELL PHONE SIGNAL? Most travellers find long-haul flights far from enjoyable. Long queues, bustling airports, endless security checks, more queues and, finally, cramped seating with pretty average food. “Have you ever rushed through an airport, sweating to make a connection, only to find yourself sitting squashed between two people you would normally avoid at all costs and wondered, ‘there must be a better way’?,” so asks Springfield author of ‘The Beginner’s (Idiot’s) Guide to Long-Haul Flights’ Mark Harnden, aka Captain Jock. “From booking your flight to arriving de-stressed at your destination, this little book will guide you through your longhaul flight trauma, step by step. Enabling you to at least escape with your sanity and, at best, perhaps spread out on an extra seat or two where you can relax, get fed first and enjoy an extra mini bottle of wine to soothe away your stress,” Mark explained. Mark is definitely qualified to talk on matters such as this, taking between twelve and twenty long-haul flights each year and possessing a selfconfessed, almost-obsession with planes, from a very young age. He relishes the whole flying process and has become very observant of the fickle, sometimes-erratic and oftenhumourous behaviour of the thousands of fellow passengers he encounters. Captain Jock really is an oceangoing captain, currently sailing the world as Master (Captain) of various ships and getting flown to their destination - wherever that may be. Now a granddad to two boys, he enjoys family time at home in Springfield, but is never far from the water and

takes on the role of skipper for the Alpine Jet operation on the Waimakariri River, while on leave. Mark’s life, pre Springfield (he moved into the area three years ago and built a house) almost leaves one exhausted thinking about it, he comments - “I've been in the merchant navy since I was sixteen, although I did take a lengthy break to undertake some more adventures!” Originally hailing from Scotland and beginning his Merchant Navy training as a deck officer these adventures include; bar work, taxi driving, owning a health and leisure Club - with a licenced bar (who’d have guessed that these would go together!), added a hair/beauty salon to the mix, before a fire ended the enterprise. What followed was a second hand book shop, auction business and electrical store. “Then I had an idea for a TV programme; one thing led to another and in 2002 I ended up presenting the first five episodes of ‘Flog It’ for the BBC. Then I got fed up, sold up and emigrated to New Zealand,” Mark laughed. He did manage to find himself on stage in a musical and front a couple of television ads though - including one here in New Zealand. Mark and his wife Elena share four children between them, plus two grandchildren and initially owned tourist accommodation in Pahia, but the 2008 recession made returning to the seagoing life a better business option.

The outstanding success of the 2018 Winter Lights Festival in Oxford has spurred organisers on to once again offer the event for the enjoyment of the general public. The enthusiasm of a local Oxford resident saw the Festival take shape last year. Lorna Price, Price co-ordinator for Oxford Promotions, felt that some bright lights and family fun would help lift spirits in the depths of winter and give children an opportunity to see festive lights, which because New Zealand’s Christmas is in summer, they don’t get to see during the holiday season. Residents and business owners in the Oxford township are being asked to decorate their premises from June 15th to the 23rd for this year’s Festival and organisers hope many will take up the challenge. LETS GET READY FOR WINTER!! Hello fellow road users. Let’s get proactive and get ready for winter. Daylight savings is a distant memory and it’s getting colder and darker in the mornings and evenings. So let me give you a few winter vehicle tips. In a previous column I wrote tips to save on fuel costs, but if I’m honest when winter rolls around there is one thing I do to use more fuel…..yes more fuel. If you are lucky enough to have a car garage for your car that’s full of kids bikes, sporting gear, boxes full of very important stuff you can’t part with and you have to park your car outside in the cold and it frosts over, then I am guilty of warming up my car for five minutes before I leave. I let the heater defrost the windscreen and use the demister on the rear window. It’s safer to have clear vison than to battle the frosted windscreen. Please Do Not use the wipers to scratch off the frost, this is the best way to destroy your wiper blades, use some warm water, or an old loyalty card from your wallet (I know you’ll have a few spare). Once you are in your car and good to go, turn on your head lights and make sure they are both going. Look for two reflections on the garage wall or even the bumper of the vehicle you are behind when you are at the lights waiting for them to change. If you notice another vehicle ‘winking’ with one head light out, try and get beside it at the lights and ‘wink’ at the driver. Just don’t say it was me who told you to do it. But seriously if you have a light out they are normally really easy to replace. Most automotive workshops stock the common bulbs, just give us a call. Having good tyres is probably the best way to increase your vehicle’s safety and performance heading into winter. MTA recommend you consider replacing your tyres when the tread depth is at 3mm. Once your tyre tread gets lower than 3mm it can’t handle the amount of water it needs to displace and aquaplanes very easily. Finally this month if you love your car, show it some love. We have had two lovely lady’s well loved vehicles into our workshop last month. While they both loved their vehicles they were both well overdue a service and were both smoking badly out their exhaust. But after a good service they both cleared themselves and we are happy to report they are now smoke free. Give your love some loving and they will love you back.

The Selwyn District Council has agreed to trial Lime Scooters in Rolleston once safety concerns and other issues have been addressed. Rolleston will become the first rural town in New Zealand to have the scooters after the Council voted at its recent meeting to approve a six month trial. The Council agreed the trial will go ahead once staff and Lime Scooters have worked through issues around where the scooters will be able to travel and how fast, as well as public education, costs and legal requirements under the Council’s bylaws. The proposal by Lime is to

introduce two hundred scooters to the Rolleston town area. It would make Rolleston the fifth place in New Zealand and the first rural town to allow the scooters. Mayor Sam Broughton said the decision fits well with the district’s forward thinking attitude, while being realistic about the concerns. “We’re an active community that likes to have fun, to look to the future and give things a go and trialling Lime scooters is a part of that. I’m looking forward to taking one out for a spin and seeing whether they’re something that works to benefit Rolleston and the district.” The Council heard

representations on the trial from Lime Scooters and Katelyn Twiss the chair of the Selwyn Youth Council and from Christchurch City Councillor Deon Swiggs, Swiggs speaking in a private capacity. Points in favour of the trial were ease of use, particularly for people who don’t drive, sustainability and fun. However, concerns were also raised about people taking the scooters on roads with higher speed limits and pedestrian safety on narrow footpaths. The Council agreed that Lime and Council staff would work together to address these concerns before the trial could go ahead.

The half-day conference will look at the role technology plays in driving productivity and profitability on-farm as well as its role in building staff capability in the sector. This year’s keynote speaker is Richard Scholefield, Scholefield the General Manager of Whangara Farms, an 8,300ha Maori cooperation farming enterprise running 35,500 ewes and 6,500 head of cattle. Richard will discuss the drivers in the business as well as the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. We are all farming in an increasingly complex environment and while there are challenges, there are also opportunities and we would like all farmers to leave FarmSmart feeling better informed and hopefully optimistic about the future of our industry.”

The ‘Best of the West’ annual gymnastics competition was hosted by West Melton Gymnastics Club on May 25th and 26th at the West Melton Community and Recreation Centre (previously it had taken place at the Rolleston Community Centre). Once again it was a popular competition and a number of South Island Clubs were represented. 236

gymnasts competed, hailing from Blenheim, Kaikoura, Hokitika, Timaru, Ashburton and Rangiora, as well as three local gym clubs, with West Melton Gymnastic Club having 79 of their own gymnasts competing. This year, it was decided to run the competition over two days as in the past, they have had to cap the number of gymnasts competing due to lack of time/

West Melton Gymnastic Club had previously been based in the old West Melton Community Centre, but needing further space to expand and wishing to have the option of leaving their equipment in place, they are now based in Izone, Rolleston. However it was an easy decision to run their ‘Best of The West’ event in the new West Melton Community Centre and the compliments on their choice of venue were many. The Club were extremely proud of their gymnasts and their performances, as well as how they looked in their bright yellow and navy leotards, long hair plaited ready to compete. For some of the children it was the first competition they had been to, but it was reported that they had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. By John Dunne Regulars to the Porters Ski Area last year still talk about Peter and Scott Curd - Bourgeois, Bourgeois 'the twin boys in the orange and blue jackets'. The chirpy, near fifteen-year-old Darfield High School students will be back on Porters’ snow again this season, in their distinctive mountain host uniforms, joining a team of hand picked volunteers dedicated to meeting and greeting customers and assisting in the Mountain's smooth operation. Both are expert skiers who live for the sport and love the

variety Porters offers, from the wide, easy slopes, to Big Mamma, Bluff Face and the chutes and bowls in-between. Living locally is a huge advantage, though it means Mum, Marissa, Marissa a keen snowboarder, is kept busy as the family 'taxi'. The twins have been known to take their own baking to the ski field, so it comes as no surprise that previous recipients are hoping for a repeat this year! Away from skiing, Scott is an enthusiastic mountain biker and jumps rider, while Peter is a sought-after photographer. His

penchant for landscapes came about because his Mum didn't want him posting 'selfies and personal stuff' on social media; so Peter decided to put his iphone initially, to a better use. Now he works with a Canon 7d Mark II, a Sigma 10-22mm and Canon 50mm lens, along with an NSI 10 stop filter and tri pod. Peter got a big break when the Metservice posted some of his work on their website and his images have also been snapped up by Kaikoura and Akaroa Tourism, among others. Cosmic dragons, Matariki and other sights from millions of miles away will be seen in West Melton next month. As part of its Matariki celebrations Selwyn District Council is hosting an astrophotography exhibition featuring eleven photographs taken by photographers from the Canterbury Astronomical Society. The exhibition, featuring photos by Simon Lewis, Lewis Gary Steel and Dr Euan Mason from the University of Canterbury, opens on Tuesday, June 4th and will be open for a month at the West Melton Community and Recreation Centre. Althoug h som e of the photographs have been published in international science journals it is the first time the photographs have been displayed together in a

of fascinating shapes and colours, including an image of nebula in the constellation Ara described as resembling cosmic dragons. As part of the celebrations, University of Canterbury Associate Professor Karen Pollard will give a talk on The Secret Life of Stars and Dr Mason will speak about the dark sky and the observatory at West Melton in the Lincoln Events’ Centre. “It’s great to be working in collaboration with the Canterbury Astronomical Society and the University of Canterbury and to have their generous support to help us learn more about the stars that are so important to our country. The Council is grateful for the support of the Society and the University,” Denise finished.
