Last Tuesday Trustees of the Malvern Community Health & Welfare Trust, members of the Malvern Lions, along with nursing staff came together to inspect the recently purchased car, a Mazda CX-5.

This is a replacement car for the Darfield Area District Nurses.

Being high wheel based and 4WD means that it can be used in all terrain and all weather.

Something that is essential for patients living in remote, rural country areas and requiring the services of our district nurses.

The car was purchased after some very successful fundraising within the community. A huge thank you to the Malvern Lions with their Annual Golf Tournament raising an amazing sum of $20,000. An amazing group of people. We

had tremendous community support for this golf tournament with incredible sponsorship and a large contingent of players turning up in the wet weather.

These funds have been generously complemented by a donation of $5,000 from the Malvern Farmers Veterinary

The Malvern Spinners and Weavers Drop In Day at the Library was deemed a success.

The room was a buzz with many spinning wheels that had been hauled out of garages, wardrobes and granny’s attics.

These were easily dusted off, oiled, tuned and good to go in a jiffy.

The sock club came to join in with a nice array of colourful hand knitted socks on display too. There were people who owned sheep, alpacas and llamas keen to find out how to use the wool and fibre

….there may be a few husbands happy that the stashed wool is going!

The displays in the room showing the many ways wool can be used were colourful and diverse and hopefully inspired people to try something different.

It was lovely to welcome people new to the district, along with several locals who are keen to join us.

Above Julie a visitor from Canada attended the drop-in day, spending her time there meeting others and spinning.

The programme aims to engage as many young New Zealanders with Olympian role models as possible, either in person or digitally, through Chat with a Champion. It supports the goal of the Olympic Movement to build a better and more peaceful world by educating youth through sport.

NZ Olympic Ambassadors are inspirational role models living the Olympic Values. They are Olympians, which means they have been to at least one Olympic Games. They may be retired from their sport or they

may still be competing.

In sharing their personal Olympic story with New Zealand school children and focussing both on the success and on the highs and lows that came with striving to become an Olympian, the Ambassadors provide a strong platform of inspiration for the students. Each Ambassador was selected as they are seen as highly positive role-models and New Zealand Olympians who have achieved one of the highest honours in sport while living according to these values.

Tuesday morning, May 28th saw excited children at Annabel’s Educare Preschool in Darfield learn about being an Olympian from one of the NZ Olympic Ambassadors, who is also local business man Aaron Orangi.

Orangi While Olympic ambassadors work mainly in primary and intermediate schools with children primarily in the 8-13 year-old bracket - this was a special visit. Aaron’s three year old son Beau attends Annabel’s and was really keen for his Dad to come along and talk to the children. What Dad could resist and so Aaron, who was a member of the New Zealand Four-Man Bob Sleigh team at the Winter Olympics in 2006, Torino, Italy - headed along to the Preschool to talk to the youngsters. Aaron has spoken with students in a number of local schools recently and these visits embody what the NZ Olympic Ambassador Programme is all about.

The Darfield High School PTSA hosted legendary comedy duo Ethel and Bethel Bingo Babes on Saturday, May 25th, in the Darfield High School Hall.

Seventy people came along and were entertained well with three rounds of bingo, games, singing and a night full of laughs. At the end of the evening there was an auction and raffle, along with an amazing supper provided by the PTSA. Everyone had a fantastic evening and were thoroughly entertained by Ethel and

Bethel the ‘Bingo Babes’. This was a wonderful, entertaining, fundraiser for the PTSA, and funds raised from the event will go towards supporting students of Darfield High School.

The PTSA sincerely thank the sponsors who donated prizes for the night, as without their help, the event could not have been run. Check out the Ethel and Bethel Facebook page for further pictures from the event.

From there she began to learn about the Trust and what it stood for.

Megan and her family are heavily involved with sport, her husband James is an assistant coach and daughters Olivia and Alexandra both play netball.

Megan has always worked, or taught, in the sporting arena and is currently a lecturer at Ara. Megan commented that the Trust has grown remarkably over a short time and she is excited about what it has to offer sport in the future.

The Selwyn Sports Trust was established to promote and support participation in sport and recreation within the Selwyn District and establish the District a popular destination for sporting pursuits.

The Trust’s primary objective is to increase participation and volunteering in sport and active recreation by supporting, coordinating, and complementing, existing providers - Clubs, schools Megan and family. The Malvern News, owned by the Jans (Crossley and Thomas) has been trading in Darfield since 2002. The pair purchased the business from Chris McSherry, who ran the start-up paper from his home and delivered the, generally four-page, publication, once a fortnight. It was printed offsite and was three and a half years old.

The Jans originally operated the business from a back room in the now-demolished Gnomes Alpine Sports building, before relocating the Lake Coleridge golf clubrooms on to the corner of Ross Street and South Terrace. This building was removed almost three years ago and the Malvern News is now produced and printed from leased premises next door to Darfield Bakery.

Six thousand copies are delivered weekly by a network of contractors and these are printed in-house on three machines.

The News’ team (which includes Chevonn Walker and Lucinda Jarvis) also design and print customers, cards, invites, business documentation, newsletters and catalogues; plus, laminate, photocopy in both black/white and colour and spiral bind booklets.

The newspaper enjoys (and appreciates) the advertising support it receives - without this support there would be no weekly paper. This advertising support enables the News to celebrate the success of locals, announce and advertise forthcoming events and generally provide a cohesive tool to keep the community’s information - all in one place. For those that are outside of the circulation zone (delivery area - Arthurs Pass to Chatterton’s Road - between the two rivers Waimak and Rakaia), or ex-locals overseas, the News can be read online.

The issues change weekly as the new one comes out.

The Darfield office also publishes and prints the Rolleston News. This is a monthly publication of over 6,000 copies and goes to Rolleston, Burnham and the RD areas that link them together.

Letting folk know who you are and what you can do, is a great way to refresh customers’ memories and often a way of preventing that custom from leaving the area.

St Peter’s Community Church Springfield On Saturday, June 22nd, St Peter’s Community Church in Springfield is holding another fundraising Fred Bull film evening as the congregation continues to raise funds for repairs to the Church.

Last year’s film evening was very popular and successful, so Fred has kindly offered to show a different selection of his father’s films of Springfield, Sheffield and the Malvern area of farming and community life from as early as the 1930’s.

Once again, the audience will be welcomed with either a cup of mulled wine, or a hot blackcurrant drink, before sitting back and enjoying local action from years ago. It’s also

a great opportunity to meet, or catch up, with other locals.

The exterior of the Church will be once again lit with fairy lights and the interior will be decorated with candles and flowers.

“Last year the Church looked absolutely beautiful,” said one

of the event’s organisers.

“There is no charge for the evening, but we would appreciate donations towards the fundraising. It’s guaranteed to be a great community gettogether for both young and old alike,” they concluded.

The beautifully lit and decorated Church welcomed crowds to last year’s event.

Rural Women NZ, Darfield Branch thank all who came to the film evening they presented at Darfield High School (DHS) last week. The film ‘She Shears’ was a very real picture of rural life and the way some of the women kept on at their extremely demanding jobs, even increasing their skill levels, after suffering debilitating accidents and the mentoring of others was truly inspirational.

“We have a copy of the DVD and would be happy to lend it to any groups who would like to use it,” said Lorraine Sheen of Rural Women NZ, Darfield Branch. “We feel this story should be told far and wide,” she added.

Apart from the obvious draw of the movie and its stars,

organisers were enthusiastic with their praise for the DHS Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) who provided an outstanding supper following the screening.

“In return we were able to give them a substantial donation to begin refilling their coffers after the great works they have already done for DHS pupils,” Lorraine explained.

The PTSA gives all money earnt back to the School, with the criteria for its use being that it must benefit a wide range of children - not just a select group. The staff and students bring their requests for funding to PTSA meetings and as a committee a decision is made on what is provided.

The group’s most recent purchase was a fully equipped,

portable, barbecue trailer for the use of the whole school’s fundraising, complete with sign writing, and valued at $8,850.

“We have also purchased a Sphero Educations coding pack for the Technology department valued at $3,500, two new drinking fountains for the School, donated $5000 towards the new garden project around F-Block and funded the new mural for the International Department,” a PTSA spokesperson concluded.

The number of people waiting for public housing in Selwyn has nearly doubled under the current Government.

“This situation has been mirrored in regions all across New Zealand with an additional 10,000 individuals on the public housing register in December 2018, compared with December 2017,” Selwyn MP Amy Adams

said.

“While the overall numbers for Selwyn remain low compared with other regions, it is concerning to see such a marked percentage rise,” Amy added.

“These figures combined with a 36% increase in people in Selwyn receiving a Jobseeker benefit show that, despite the

Government’s rhetoric, the wellbeing of some of our residents is going backwards,” Amy said.

“Having a house to live in and having a job are basic measures of wellbeing and the Government’s policies are delivering the exact opposite of what they claim to be,” Amy concluded.

The Malvern Community Board will honour local community heroes in its annual Community Service Awards.

Nominations are now open for the 2019 awards, which will be presented at a special event in August.

“There are so many volunteers and individuals who are doing outstanding work in Malvern,” said Community Board chairperson Jenny Gallagher.

Gallagher “These are our community heroes - it’s great to be able to tell their stories to the wider community, and recognise the time, effort and resources they give.

“If you know of anyone who’s deserving of recognition for his, or her, outstanding voluntary service to the community, please nominate them.”

The awards recognise several categories of voluntary service including recreation, youth activities, aged, welfare, educational service, cultural, religious and community affairs.

Nominees for the awards may be giving voluntary service as a resident of the Malvern Community Board area, or a non-resident person who performs his, or her, service for the benefit of the area, or a resident who performs his, or

her, service outside this community.

Nominations are invited from organisations, associations, societies, clubs or individuals.

Forms and guidelines are available from the Darfield Library and Service Centre or online from the Council website.

Mark Aldridge was fortunate to have his first glider flight when he was nine years old, after reading a book about a young man learning to fly, and being captivated by it.

Finishing University and starting work gave Mark the opportunity to take up gliding as a sport. He has now been a B Cat instructor for thirty two years and previously was also a tow pilot.

He now prefers to concentrate on gliding and the encouragement of others to make it their sport!

As well as the obvious enjoyment of the sport there are numerous facets of gliding

to captivate enthusiasts; the camaraderie, ground support, meteorology, various ‘badges’ to achieve (distances from, 50 km to over 100 km, speed or distance records), passenger ratings, instructor ratings, learning to fly the tow plane and learning to drive the winch, (which is another method of getting airborne as distinct from the tow plane).

“The best way to learn to fly is via one of my courses, (okay I’m biased),” Mark laughed. “My particular skill is removing any stress from the decision making required in landing a glider,” he explained.

Amongst the superb instructors on the locally based (Sheffield) Canterbury Gliding Club, September course will be: Jerry O’Neil: O’Neil Experienced cross country pilot and senior A Cat instructor.

Kevin Bethwaite: Bethwaite A former Club President and B Cat instructor and previous Airways staff.

Warwick Bethwaite: The Club’s Chief Flying Instructor and large ly respons ibl e for developing the current airfield.

The Canterbury Gliding Club has a pool of approximately twelve instructors, and Mark will be organising at least four of them to attend the course in September.

Course participants will have a busy time, with flying during the day, a delicious evening meal at the Sheffield Hotel and then back for lectures.

Accommodation is either in the Clubhouse, bunkhouse, or at the camping ground and then the day repeats!

“The beauty of a week-long course like this is the intensity of the flying, as well as learning how the Club operates.

Everything from opening the hanger doors to closing down our flight recording programme, is covered,” Mark said.

The Canterbury Gliding Club has been active since 1947 and now operates from its own airfield near Sheffield, and currently has around eighty members. “We consider it a privilege to fly from such a beautiful area and took a revolutionary step in changing the type of tow plane that we use to ensure we do not disturb our ne ig hb our s, ” Ma rk explained. “The hanger that we’ve built has also been used for various community functions,” Mark concluded.

As part of the Rolleston town centre upgrade, a promenade is proposed which will encourage walking and cycling.

A main promenade is proposed to run between the Tennyson Street entrance and the Wordsworth Street

extension.

A detailed design of the promenade, as well as for the rest of the town centre development, is now available for the public to view, see Selwyn District Council’s website for more details.

Pedestrians will be able to enjoy a leisurely walk through landscaped gardens, comfortable seating areas, grassy ‘urban islands’, outdoor kids’ educational zones, as well as a vegetable garden.

The promenade provides the transition between the town centre/square and the reserve. This is proposed to be an attractive link for pedestrians and cyclists as

they travel in both of these areas. The promenade is intended to be used as a shared-space environment where pedestrians, cyclists and service, or emergency, motor vehicles can move at slow speed.

Semi retired Christchurch radio personality John Dunne, Dunne having been a Selwyn rate payer for near 27 years, now lives permanently at Castle Hill Village. In a broadcasting career spanning five decades, he can still be heard at 94.5fm 'The Breeze' on Saturday mornings.

John’s previously lengthy time at NewstalkZB in the city, also included television news and current affairs and radio rugby

commentaries; though on leaving St Bede's, in the early '70s, his first job was as a farmhand in Windwhistle, on what is now part of the Point Station.

Ever since it opened in 1968, John has been a regular at Porters Ski Area in winter, where he runs a ski programme; summer is usually spent close to lakes, or the Peninsula, where he loves to sail.

Also a wedding and funeral celebrant, John's passionate about promoting venues and destinations for such events, that showcase the wider area.

He is also experienced in governance roles, PR, marketing, life-skills support and mediation and is a NZ Justice of the Peace.

There’s an opportunity currently available to attend Outward Bound with a Ka Mahi scholarship, which provides up to 75% funding for a 21-day Classic Course.

On Saturday, May 25th a Karaoke Night was held at Darfield’s Terrace Surf and Turf Bar to raise funds towards sixteen year old local girl Soph Kingi’s attendance at the Hip Hop International, World Champs. These are to be held in Phoenix Arizona during August this year. Soph dances as part of the Identity Dance Company (IDCO) which is based in Auckland, so a considerable amount of travel to competitions and training is required. The Karaoke Night was reported to be a great success with a lot of fun and laughs had by all those who attended. It was also commented on, that there had been some fabulous music choices and a few local karaoke queens!

Soph and her family thank all those that have supported her and her fundraising efforts in any way. She is extremely grateful for the support that is helping her make her dreams come true.

Netball is well underway for the season, the weather has been fantastic and everyone is enjoying Saturday netball.

Darfield netball club have seven teams this year, with plenty of Future Ferns getting started in netball on a Monday afternoon (it's great to see over forty budding ferns from around Malvern running around and enthusiastic about netball).

The years 5-8 Future Ferns (912 year olds) already have opportunities to attend tournaments - they are called either rainbow or jellybean tournaments.

The Maw family (Creeside Farms) of Methven have taken away top honours, winning the coveted Gladfield Shield. The Maw family are great supporters of Gladfield Malt Ltd. who award the shield each year for the best line of Malting barley grown by one of their contracted suppliers.

It is only the third time the shield has been awarded; previous winners were Nigel Greenwood of Lake side and John and Debra McLachlan also of Lakeside.

He spent three weeks assisting with the management of the Civil Defence response to the Kaikoura earthquakes and ten months as a response manager in the northern South Island overseeing the Ministry of Primary Industries response to t h e Myc op l a s m a Bov i s outbreak.

Having farmed near Lincoln for the past twenty years and serving as a District Licensing Commissioner for five years he said he enjoyed living and working in the District.

His work includes ensuring the district is as resilient and prepared as it can be to respond to any adverse event.

That includes making sure resources are in place to enable communities to respond through their Community Response Teams and the District’s Response/Rescue Team.

Malvern Game Hunters are set to get their twenty sixth annual Hun ng Compe on underway on the weekend of July 26th28th, 2019. Billed as one of the largest hun ng compe on in the South Island, organisers are once again expec ng a large number of entries.

The compe on will begin on Friday, July 26th and will run through to 2pm on Sunday, July 28th. Weigh-in will be held at the Coalgate Tavern on the Sunday, between 11am and 2pm, followed by the prizegiving.

As in previous years, a large number of quality Spot Prizes are on offer, including a $1000 Cash Prize sponsored by All About Sewage. These are over and above the monetary prizes available for the heaviest Boar, Chamois, Stag, Thar and Wallaby and the best Douglas scores for Chamois, Stag, Thar, Tusks and Average Boar Weight.

There are also prizes for the most rabbits, hares and possums shot by an individual.

One of the drawcard events at the final weigh-in will undoubtedly be the Kids’ Carrying compe on (12noon start) and Open Pig Carrying compe on for men and women (2pm start), plus the wallaby carrying compe on for children. A perennial favourite and always a good photo opportunity, the compe ons are expected to be fiercely contested and create much spectator interest from the expected large crowd in aNendance.

ChrisAne Anderson took the chair for this part of the mee ng and ably concluded the elec on. Dennis Phillips was voted in as President, Elizabeth Forrest as Treasurer and Barbara Roberts and Kate Campbell sharing the secretarial du es, plus the general commiNee. Margaret Ridgen was made an honorary member, a worthy recipient of this tle and Anna Clarke nominated as our new Patroness. Anna has worked relessly for the Club in many areas for more years than she will care to remember! Having said this, Anna gives the impression she thoroughly enjoys Garden Club and all it entails and we offer her our congratula ons on this posi on. A beau ful floral arrangement was presented to Cynthia Bishell our re ring secretary, another member who has worked hard for the Club. Dennis had hand turned a wooden biro as a giU, which was quite exquisite, we were all most envious and Cynthia seemed very pleased with the thought.
