The Dutton Garage Anzac Day Malvern Run saw a huge contingent of amazing vehicles tour the roadways of Malvern after gathering for a viewing at the Darfield Recreation Reserve carpark. Numerous locals turned out to see the cars, many of which are extremely rare, very valuable, and were all in outstanding condition. Unfortunately one or two vehicles enjoyed their car-park experience so much they were reluctant to leave, but other than that everyone set off around Darfield streets, much to the delight of those watching
from windows and driveways. “My old Jaguar decided that it didn’t want to do the run; so the fuel pump went on the blink in the car park, which was very considerate of it,” laughed local event organiser Malcolm MacGibbon. MacGibbon “Other than a couple of punctures and minor mechanical adjustments along the way, everyone managed to complete the run,” Malcolm added. A highlight for Malcolm was to be accompanied by Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton at the start of the event. “I was able to share the delights of my very

old Renault with him and when he said he would like to do the run with his family next year, a car has been arranged,” Malcolm said. “Other highlights were to have 25 cars over one hundred years old and a goodly number of Darfield people along to see them all. It was also great to see a Model T Ford attend that has been in the district under
the same family ownership all its life,” Malcolm enthused. “It was also nice to get so many texts and emails after the event, from people who participated, thanking everyone involved for such a good day and how they would definitely be back next year. I guess I will have to do at least one more,” he concluded with a smile.

Mother's Day is a celebration honouring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March, or May. It complements similar celebrations honouring family members, such as Father's Day, Siblings’ Day, and Grandparents’ Day. The modern Mother's day began in the United States, at the initiative of Anna Reeves Jarvis in the early twentieth century. This is not (directly) related to the many traditional celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have existed throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally a commemoration of Mother Church, not motherhood). However, in some countries, Mother's Day is still synonymous with these older traditions. The US - derived modern version of Mother's Day has been criticised for having become too commercialised. The founder herself regretted this commercialism and expressed views on how that was never her intention. The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna held a memorial for her mother at a local church. Her campaign to make Mother's Day a recognised holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother died. Her mother had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna wanted to honour her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honour all mothers because she
believed a mother is, "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". Although Anna was successful in founding Mother's Day, she
became resentful of the commercialisation of the holiday (although on a Sunday the day is a public holiday in the US).

By the early 1920’s, companies had started selling Mother's Day cards and she believed that the businesses had misinterpreted and exploited the idea of Mother's Day, and that the emphasis of the holiday should be on sentiment, not profit. As a result, Anna organised boycotts of Mother's Day, and threatened to issue lawsuits against the companies involved. She argued that people should appreciate and honour their mothers through handwritten letters expressing their love and gratitude, instead of buying gifts and premade cards. Following her protests at a variety of events, Anna was arrested in 1925 for disturbing the peace.

The Darfield Anzac service was extremely well attended and those on site also noted the presence of an armed police officer at the event. Above following the laying of wreaths and the placing of poppies the parade led by returned veterans marches from the Cenotaph area. The Anzac service held at the Glentunnel Hall on Thursday, April 25th was well supported with one hundred and fifty people attending. Representatives from Selwyn District Council, St John, NZ Army, Scouts and the general public were all in attendance at the Service. Wreaths were laid at the memorial by the Fire Brigade, Army and Scouts. The Coalgate and Glentunnel Town Committees joined together to provide a much appreciated morning tea after the Service. The biennial Oxford Wearable Arts competition has long held a firm spot on the creative calendar and moving forward with a name and venue change to better reflect its wide appeal, this will continue. Now under the title of North Canterbury Wearable Arts this sixth event will take place at the end of August in the Rangiora Town Hall. The Wearable Arts is hosted by the Oxford Area School PTA and is an important fundraiser for the School. But more importantly, it is a community/district event which offers an opportunity for students and adults, Canterbury
wide, to showcase their work and talent in a ‘show’ atmosphere with live music, judges, compere and prizes. “For students especially, it is a huge opportunity and wonderful experience to be able to research, design and create a garment, before modelling it on a stage in front of an audience,” said a spokesperson for the organisers. In the past Wearable Arts have attracted up to 45 entries (both adults and students) which has motivated the Oxford Area School PTA to look at a better and more appropriate venue. Organisers decided on the Rangiora Town Hall as it has a superbly upgraded, purposebuilt auditorium for shows and the capability of a bigger audience capacity in rather more superior seating than its School counterpart. Its location also makes it more central for those travelling from throughout mid-north Canterbury and it’s to be hoped that the name change will assist with attracting entries from these areas. Entries for both students and adults are open now. There are some great prizes on offer in each category/age group, with the supreme winners of both Adult and Student sections receiving a trophy, plus flights and tickets to attend the World of Wearable Arts event in Wellington. There will be both a matinee and an evening show enabling a wide audience to see and enjoy the creations. As with any event of this nature, keeping costs down is imperative if any funds are to be raised for the School. “The sponsors we have attracted so far have been wonderful and afforded a great range of prizes for both adults and students,” the spokesperson said. “Sponsorship helps to keep our costs down and we are always on the lookout for any individual or company who would like to donate goods/ services or cash to put towards our prize pool. Any individual or company who generously sponsors a prize, or contribution towards a prize, will be guaranteed plenty of
exposure on our various media sites and during the evening itself,” they concluded.

Recently Nathan Carter and his mother Bridget set about organising and ticket selling for a fundraising raffle to benefit the Running on the Autism Spectrum charity; it raised the sizeable sum of $1,110. As well as the fundraising, participants plan a run in their own home area during Easter and on a beautiful day over the
break, the pair ran the Crater Rim track in Christchurch. The 21 kilometre run, chosen by Bridget for the pair to tackle was described as ‘nice and hilly’. Bridget commented she was so proud of Nathan’s enthusiasm and the energy he has for life and learning. Adding that he always has a smile on his face even after completing
the very hilly 21 kilometre run! Both Bridget and Nathan sincerely thank the local community for their raffle buying support, along with their encouragement for the 21 kilometre run. Bridget commented that it was great to see Nathan out in his community assisting with the raffle selling. Full raffle results are posted in the Malvern News window, where they will remain for a couple of weeks.

The Easter Pork Pie Charity Run is over and the funds raised for KidsCan, the highest yet. Many throughout the area viewed the cars as they drove through and locals (one current and one ex) John Elstob (Beef) and Wayne Boyes (Brick) surpassed themselves! Sixty Minis made the epic journey from Kaitaia to Invercargill, although Brick and Beef didn’t do the trip in the vehicle they started in! Within minutes of setting off and while they were heading for the start line, the engine of their 1977 Mini gave up the ghost. No time for repairs, so the two organised a new mini (a lot newer - and rather more reliable) and hit the road. The group raised around $270,000 (at the time of going to print) and Brick and Beef raised the highest team amount of $30,619 giving them prime position at the top of the leaderboard. To recognise this achievement the pair were presented with a die cast model of a Mini Cooper and certificate of participation. All sixty Minis
made it to Invercargill and all contestants made life long friends vowing to do it all again in two years’ time (with the 1977 model thoroughly repaired and ready to go).
Both Brick and Beef thank everyone who supported them and helped them raise the magnificent total to be passed on to KidsCan.

The first stage of the plan is to be implemented by planting the extension boundary with native plants. This planting of native plants is to form a ‘green dot’ in Kirwee with the hope of establishing ecosystems and native bird life on the Reserve. The large purpose built store was at times filled to capacity with customers sorting their ski requirements for the forthcoming season. The annual sale of ex-hire equipment and heavily discounted retail stock sees customers travel from throughout Canterbury and the West Coast and takes on
an almost festival atmosphere as folk meet and greet. “It was another record breaking sale,” commented Gnomes Alpine Sports coowner Ally Kerr. Kerr “The ski industry is definitely thriving right now and everyone, us included obviously, are looking forward to an epic season ahead.”

government. These conditions have long since passed, and the functions of modern Justices in New Zealand are now more limited than in former times. Notwithstanding their more restricted powers, it remains true that Justices of the Peace are citizens given special duties and powers and that their office is an ancient and honourable one. Many misconceptions about the powers of Justices exist - one is that they can marry people - they can’t. They can if they are appointed by the Registrar of Birth, Deaths and Marriages and undergo a special course to be a marriage celebrant (just as anyone who aspires to that role can). They also can’t be called to serve on the bench in the District Court, without further Judicial training. Appointment as a Justice of the Peace is like an honours award - it isn’t - the appointment is not to bestow an Honour award but to recognise that the recipient is a person recognised as worthy of serving the community in this capacity. Hot air balloon crews from all over New Zealand will descend on Selwyn for the Hororata Night Glow, on Saturday, May 18th. “The balloonists who took up the invitation to attend after last year, are all returning, plus some new ones. The crews enjoyed being welcomed into our community and can’t wait to be back,” said Michael Oakley owner of, and pilot with, Ballooning Canterbury. “Many of the pilots and crews are from the North Island and we are grateful to the Interislander who has sponsored their ferry crossings. “In the week leading up to the Hororata Night Glow the balloonists enjoy a social week of flying together. Exactly when and where we fly will depend on the weather, but we hope to be in the sky as much as possible, which will be a spectacular sight for those on the ground,” Michael explained. One of the facets of ballooning that adds a certain romanticism to it that has largely been lost to other forms of flying, is that it holds to certain small traditions, some of which go back to ballooning's origins in France. One of these traditions is for the pilot/aeronaut to present the landowner, on whose property they make their final landing, with a ceremonial bottle of champagne/bubbles. “Hot air balloons are at the
mercy of the wind somewhat, so when and where we fly early in the mornings will only be decided just prior to launching. We will always endeavour to respect people’s property, especially when it comes to landing. And as explained we’ll stick to ballooning tradition, with pilots presenting landowners with a bottle of wine to thank them,” Michael said. Balloon crews will be hosted by local families which adds to their feeling of being part of the community it was commented. “It would not be possible to have this many visiting pilots and crews without the support of all the hosts and the team who have volunteered to cater for them, thank you to everyone who is helping make this possible,” Michael stressed. The Hororata Night Glow, which is scheduled to be held on Saturday, May 18th at the Hororata Domain, will see hot air balloons glowing in unison to music. “The balloons do not leave the ground at the Night Glow, instead we light them up like giant lanterns. Getting all the balloons standing at once and glowing in a choreographed performance is not easy and weather conditions have to be perfect,” Michael explained. “The Night Glow could happen anytime from 5.30pm on the night, so my advice to people would be to get there early and
enjoy all the food and entertainment the festival has to offer surrounding the balloons,” he said. “There are great bands lined up and it will be worth staying until the end of the evening for the fireworks display,” Michael concluded.

Participants recently completed the Level 1 Te Reo course in Darfield. It was a joint venture between the course provider Risingholme and our local Malvern Kāhui Ako. The Kāhui Ako comprises all our early childhood centres, primary schools and Darfield High School. Together, our Principals and Managers work together to establish a smooth transition between learning centres, and to work towards other common goals. Our Te Reo course shows how our community and schools can come together to support cultural sustainability in the schools and home. Over 4000 young people from ten Selwyn schools will be getting active on their way to school for the second annual ‘Active Autumn’. Selwyn District Council’s Road Safety team are running the active transport campaign for schools in term two. Ten schools covering over 4000 learners have registered this year. Active transport is using an active mode of transport such as walking, skating, biking or scootering to get to and from school. School Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler said there are many physical and mental benefits to active transport,
which are being encouraged with Active Autumn. “Children develop increased road safety awareness, decision making and risk assessment skills,” she added. “Gaining these life skills as a child is an important step towards gaining independence and it helps with learning. “Studies have found that children who are active are not only physically fitter but can concentrate for longer in class.” During May, Selwyn schools participating in the campaign are provided with Active Autumn packs to educate families about active transport. Scout out a location where they can safely walk to the kea crossing or school entrance without crossing any major roads or entranceways. Make this your safe meet point for after school pick up too. Pick a route and get to know it – find a route that minimises the number of roads to be crossed and avoids busy intersections, and get to know it together. Point out hazards such as blind corners and discuss where to cross. Find some buddies – people may be able to take turns with other parents escorting a small group to school. Better yet, organise a walking school bus or scooter train.

Bob Shorter and Aynsley Williams were the winning combination with three wins out of three. The day concluded with the presentation of trophies. Another great season of Social Bowls finished on Thursday, March 21st. The Crackerjacks (Sean Sean Archer, Archer Michael Bickley, Bickley John Wilkinson and Reon Goodwillie) Goodwillie went through undefeated and were declared the winners. The sixth annual Hororata Pig and Possum hunt took place over the weekend of April 26th to 28th and attracted a large number of entries. Those keen on hunting enjoyed the challenge of securing the title of heaviest in the event’s varying categories with the Sunday weigh-in closing at 2pm. Many attended this to enjoy the fantastic, family, fun day before the official prize giving. As in previous years there was a range of activities to participate in including ‘Hare Carrying’ and ‘Possum Throwing’, and paintball targets, plus a butcher’s display by local businessman Brent Shearer covering skinning and breaking down a deer. All paid adult entries went into the draw to win a fantastic $1,000 voucher from Outdoor Adventure Sports in Ashburton with Dylan Wright being the successful winner. Also up for grabs was a Hanmer Springs Escape Raffle which was limited to one hundred tickets and was won by Nicky Cross. Cooper Holland was the ecstatic winner of the kids’ prize draw of a parent/child hunt at High Peak Station. Children to got to participate in the hunt and were given the opportunity to weigh in pigs, deer, hares or possums. The first one hundred children to weigh in an animal also got a goodie bag. This year there were one hundred and twenty hares and the same number of possums weighed in. In the open section
thirty four pigs, twenty two red stags and eleven fallow deer also weighed in. “It is thanks to our great sponsors that we were able to have free entry for those fourteen years and under,” organiser Rebecca Smith said. “The event had some fantastic sponsors again and we thank them for their support; funds raised will be donated by the organisers to provide education outside the classroom for Hororata children,” Rebecca explained. “Once again the event has brought families and community members together, doing something they enjoy and with the chance of going home with a prize as well,” Rebecca concluded. Tree too big? Not enough light? Or just untidy!
The Synchro Club ‘Small Strokes’ began with two swimmers having fun and ‘playing’ with ideas and little shows in a small, shallow pool at Weedons, Selwyn. Four years later, they had four swimmers (enough for a small team) and began to compete at South Island Championships. Synchronised Swimming is a difficult, technical sport and the girls were very young (seven and eight years old). After outgrowing the original pool they then moved to a deeper, bigger one and the Club started
to gain more swimmers and do well at competitions. Small Strokes now have twenty five swimmers, four coaches and four judges, of which they are very proud. In 2018 the Club had two Selwyn girls selected for the New Zealand High Performance Squad - Alessandra Ward and Tia Betteridge. Betteridge They worked extremely hard (seven hours per day), every holidays, in New Zealand Camps, as well as their normal Club practices and both made the travelling team to Singapore and Malaysia in
2018. Ten swimmers, from all over the country, were chosen to travel with this team, and in Singapore they achieved fourth placing. The team then went on to Malaysia to the 2018 Open Asian Championships and won Gold Medals. “We are very pleased this year to have five girls selected in the N.Z. High Performance Squads Tia Betteridge, Kaitlyn Allison (from Selwyn) and Daisy Sellier and Hannah Shatford from Christchurch, are in the Pikopiko Development Squad (11-15 years) and Selwyn’s Alessandra Ward, in the Koru Squad (15-19 years). Alessandra is our most senior swimmer, and one of the original founding members. This year she has been training with the Aquaferns - our Open New Zealand competitors. Later this year, New Zealand. selectors will choose nine swimmers from the two squads to compete in the World Championships in Korea in July. As Head Coach of the Club, we could not be prouder of the way these girls have worked to achieve the level that they have in a short period of time. I would like to wish them all good luck.

Local dancer Teresa Barnhill was recently honoured to receive a PACANZ (Performing Arts Competition Association New Zealand) nomination from the Christchurch Ballet Society. Dancers are selected from throughout New Zealand after judging by two Australian adjudicators, on two performances including Jazz and Contemporary at the CTDTA (Christchurch Tap Dancers Teachers Association) competitions in Christchurch. Teresa is looking forward to representing the Christchurch Ballet Society at the 2019 NYPA (National Young Performer Awards) held in Palmerston North later in the year. BOT ELECTION Monday, April 23rd 2019 - Update The Malvern Community Board held its monthly meeting in the Darfield Library and Service Centre. Council’s Property and Commercial Manager, Douglas Marshall, Marshall and Team Leader Strategy and Planning, Ben Rhodes, Rhodes were in attendance. Ben updated the Board on a number of recent District Plan Review matters. He said that in terms of Malvern there was not too much significant change happening. He said restrictions in relation to temporary activities in the Ward will mainly be around daily hours of operation, the number of consecutive days and the number of events on any one site. This included limiting commercial filming as a permitted activity for up to thirty days. There were also discussions around network activities and renewable energy. Ben told the Board that the Council adopted the District Parking Strategy a week ago. This was related to looking at ways that the Council could manage car parking across the district with a particular focus to town centres. This included providing and managing public parking in Rolleston and Lincoln, as well as providing options to review parking in Darfield and Leeston. He said the team will continue reporting back to the Board on Darfield car parking ma tt er s as th at i s su e progresses through the District Plan review. Douglas gave the Board an overview of some of the latest Council projects. The Manager’s Report noted that both Darfield and Southbridge Pools have become Poolsafe accredited. The Poolsafe Quality Management Scheme (Poolsafe) is an independent assessment of public pools to ensure that their operations and facilities are safe. The Selwyn Aquatic Centre has also been reaccredited. Part of the Manager’s report included progress on funded projects through the Tourism Infrastructure Fund. These include Kowai Pass Domain facilities upgrade with work expected to start after Easter; Arthur’s Pass public toilet
effluent system upgrade which has been completed; and campervan waste water dump stations around the District to be finalised soon. General Board business included reports from the Chair and Board members. Some of the topics discussed by the Board included:
