An impressive forty strong cast of children from all over Selwyn are set to amaze audiences in Kirwee Players Kids’ Shrek JR on April 12th, 13th and 14th at the Kirwee Community Hall. This well known movie has been converted to a heart warming and hilarious musical with all the well-known characters and songs that both children and adults love. The Show’s Production Manager - Courtney Hyde said tickets are selling incredibly well with only twenty left for the final Show and limited numbers available for
the other performances, as well. She reported that rehearsals were going really well and she found the kids absolutely amazing. “The calibre this year, is really impressive,” Courtney added. “This is the Kirwee Players Kids third production and after the success of Annie JR in 2018 and The Little Mermaid JR in 2017, Kirwee Players can’t wait for audiences to see the youngsters on stage again.”

Sizzle N Hussler is a seventeen year old American Paint and this was the first time the combination had competed together at HOY. Mikayla and he won the prestigious, ‘Pinto Pony of the Year’ title. 20 Hours ECE are FREE!

He won his height class saddle hunter pony and was first in his lead up working hunter class. Mikayla would love to defend her title again next year and hopes to have a successful eventing season on NS Mickey until then. The annual Land Rover Horse of
premier equestrian competition, featuring a range of horse and rider combinations from multiple disciplines. Usually there are over 1,400 riders and about 1,800 horses competing for lucrative titles and prize money. The Show is a feature on many equestrian riders’ calendars.
Well done to all the local riders who competed at HOY with fantastic results and many personal bests.

By Lucinda Jarvis. the Enduro where riders are Results from DHS students: The South Island Secondary Schools’ Mountain Bike Championships were held at the Mount Hutt Bike Park from March 29th to 31st. This was reportedly the biggest school cycling event held to date with around 430 entries and was hosted by Bike Methven. Four Darfield High School students competed and performed well on some technically challenging courses. There were three events held over three days, Cross Country, Downhill and Enduro and fierce competition from those attending aged Under 13 through to Under 20. Darfield High student Brooke WinterWinter-Reid enjoyed a fantastic three days of competition, and competed in all three events. Brooke was placed second in

timed on downhill runs only. The downhill on day two saw her also in second place, having only missed out on a first by three seconds. “The third day I knew I had enough points to take the overall first place for our grade,” Brooke explained, “so the Cross Country was a bit of a social ride for me as it's not really my thing. I prefer the high octane downhill stuff with jumps and air,” she added. “As with any competition of this size I really enjoyed the social side, meeting new people and encouraging everybody to improve their own skills with a bit of competitive banter on the side. A huge thank you to Bike Methven and the wonderful sponsors that got behind the event, it was so well organised and run,” Brooke concluded. Eddie Adams commented that it was his first time competing and while the results weren’t his driving force; he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Eddie still gained great placings adding that, “I was there to try my hardest, but it’s pretty difficult to control how hard-out anyone else goes!”

Organisers of the Malvern 48hour FilmFest Challenge want to remind enthusiastic local filmmakers that creating a short film will take a wee bit of preparation. “Making a two to six minute film is immensely satisfying, but it’s also something of a mission,” said organiser, Phil Baldwin, Baldwin Chair of the Malvern Community Arts Council, local sponsor of the FilmFest Challenge. “There are heaps of things to think of besides gathering your team and equipment, writing the script, assigning roles, and shooting the scenes. Lighting, costumes, sound and music, continuity and editing - these
are just some of the aspects of filmmaking that will help your work stand out from the competition,” Phil advised. A quick Google search of, ‘how to make a short film’ will reveal literally millions of tips and tricks for the making of a short film. April school holidays may be the perfect time for teams to see what they can do in a 48hour stretch. All creative activity required to produce an entry in the FilmFest challenge - writing, shooting, editing, audio mixing, and submitting an entry - must occur within the 48 hours of the competition, which begins 7pm Friday evening, July 12th and ends at 7pm, Sunday, July 14th.
The St Peters Church, Springfield, fundraiser went ahead on Sunday, April 7th as planned, after the organising committee decided on the preceding Saturday to proceed with the 4WD event; considering that the weather could go either
way. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a blue-sky day, but it was still very successful with an excellent turn out of approximately fifty vehicles. Those that attended came from as far as Scotland (they won the spot prize for the person who travelled the furthest) and ranged in ability from never having been 4WD-ing before, to the very experienced. The recent rain made the track a little more challenging than expected, but everyone got through safely and the feedback was that it was thoroughly enjoyable. The day started with Garth Faulks giving a run down on the current farm practices of Mt Torlesse which was especially

This was very well received by the adults, whilst the children played by the lake. At lunchtime Tom Innes led a simple church service for those that wished to attend. Hayley Slater Prior to the Fonterra open-day on Saturday, April 6th there were pleas on various Facebook pages for tickets as the event had been a sell-out early-on. This resulted in approximately 550 successful ticket holders from areas including Ashburton, Christchurch, Kirwee, Darfield and Hororata attending the Fonterra Darfield site open-day. People were queuing at the gates early, it was reported, eager to get the rare chance to
look behind the scenes of the world’s joint-largest milk dryer, a distribution centre the size of seven rugby fields and the new cream cheese plant. GM Operations Darfield and Upper South Island Harriet Van GenneGenne-Knape said it was great to see such a turn-out. “It was a little wet and cold, but that didn’t seem to deter anyone. From the very young, to the group from a local retirement home, there was
something of interest to everyone. “The children loved getting into the tankers and I hear our automated forklifts and freshly made cream cheese were also a hit,” she said. The site open-gates event was one of three held around the country on Saturday. With the Co-operative’s Te Rapa and Edendale sites also hosting visitors and lifting the lid on dairy production.

The Oxford Club is again presenting an evening of music and entertainment (May 4th) and for those who’ve attended any of their previous nights, they’ll know just how good they are. Appearing will be tribute artists Gary Brown in the persona of Austin Powers (Gary wowed those that attended the Best of British at the Club last year) teamed up with Emmeline Pitcher as Cher and Cindy of Samoa as Tina Turner; the night looks like one not to be missed!
“Gary really was the star of the Best of British show,” explained one of the event organisers, Kyle Scott. “He sang, danced, told jokes, compered the Show and all while constantly moving,” Kyle laughed. “He was a real live-wire and even people who weren’t that keen on the original Austin Powers, loved him! With the two ‘female’ tribute artists it’ll makes a real night with a difference and definitely one to remember.” All three have performed on TV’s ‘Stars in their Eyes’ programme.
Oxford Club management have resumed operation of their Bistro, renaming it ‘Oscar’s Place’. “It has really taken off with scrumptious food and excellent service,” Kyle said. “It’s a great opportunity for music lovers to make a night of it; wine and dine first, before taking in the Show and dancing the evening away.”

Over the weekend of April 6th 7th at the Rolleston Community Centre there was creative inspiration in abundance at the sixteenth Selwyn Arts Heart Exhibition. The exhibition is an annual event featuring artists who live, work, or play in the Selwyn District. The Selwyn Arts Heart Committee who organise the event aim to create an affordable and accessible way for emerging and existing artists to showcase their work. For many new artists, the exhibition is a chance to share their art with the public for the very first time, and have their work displayed alongside more experienced participants. The exhibition was open to the public on both Saturday and Sunday, and it was reported that the pieces exhibited were extr e m ely w e ll -r ece iv ed, resulting in many artworks sold. There was a wide range of art
and crafts on display including painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, ceramics and embroidery. On Friday night the exhibition was opened by Selwyn MP Amy Adams who spoke to invited guests about the way the arts contribute to Selwyn’s identity and the high level of engagement in the genre throughout the Canterbury region. Prize for the artwork with the most votes over the weekend from the public went to artist Jennifer Stebbings for her landscape painting ‘Bealey Alps’. This work depicted the u p p e r r e ac h e s o f t h e Waimakariri River with the Southern Alps as a backdrop. The prize draw for a member of the public who voted in People’s Choice went to Marg Skene of Rolleston.

Hard on the heels of Hororata golfer, Al Sime getting a hole-inone in March, another Hororata golfer realised the same achievement on Saturday, April 6th. Graeme Harris was one of the field who braved the weather and was astounded when he hit a hole in one on the number six hole. The number six hole is called ‘Shorty’ which speaks for itself having a distance of around 118 metres. He lined up the shot with a seven iron and the ball bounced along the ground. He was not happy with the shot and bent to pick up his tee. He asked his playing partner if they saw where it went, expecting the worst. His partner replied, ‘in the hole’ and started to laugh as the look on Graeme’s face went from being bleak, to utter amazement! Such is the game of golf, that the hole-in-one was the highpoint of an otherwise terrible round for Graeme. He said it
On Friday, March 29th West Melton School unveiled their new school mural, after a planning process that began at the beginning of 2018. The School’s cultural committee met several times to discuss the vision for the mural which they wanted to convey the ‘essence’ of West Melton School. They also wanted to embed the School’s cultural narrative through the artistic piece. The mural was a student leddesign and was painted by students for the School and community. The cultural committee received numerous submissions and four with special merit were selected for presentation to the Board of Trustees. Daisy, Daisy Nash, Nash Jasmine and Josh shared their ideas with the Board and a collaborative piece was created which included Josh’s logo, Daisy’s Pacifika weavings, Nash’s landscape and Jasmine’s striking circular artwork. Many students throughout the School contributed to the mural. It was a mammoth undertaking but it certainly makes a vibrant statement of who they are as a School and community.

Last Friday evening the Darfield Rugby Clubrooms were the venue for the Darfield Cricket Club end-of-season prizegiving. The event was extremely well attended and took the form of speeches and awards followed by a shared supper and a chance to chat and socialise. While Junior cricket at the Darfield Club has been alive and well continuously, Senior cricket has been in recess for around eight years. Club officials had a goal of fielding a team in each available grade this year - which they achieved - and this inaugural combined prize-giving rewarded those players who were part of this resurgence. Darfield teams take part in the Ellesmere competition playing against teams from throughout central Canterbury.

About sixty people attended the opening of the Weedons’ Community Centre on Friday, April 5th. Mayor Sam Broughton and Selwyn MP Amy Adams joined Councillors, members of the Weedons’ Reserve Committee and the community at the event. Pupils from Weedons’ School gave speeches, before the building was declared open. Construction of the $830,000 facility began in May 2018 and was completed in December 2018. Council Major Projects’ Property Manager John Reid said the new
Weedons’ Community Centre will provide a modern facility for the local community as well as the sports groups who regularly use the Reserve. “It’s a ‘fit-for-purpose’ facility that recognises the relatively limited size of the local community, but also is of a level of specification that will provide the wider Selwyn region with a small boutique facility available for smaller functions,” John said. “The Weedons’ Reserve Committee have worked for many years to replace the old, outdated and damaged Centre. Along with recent upgrades to

the tennis and cricket facilities on the Reserve, the Council is very pleased that the Weedons’ community now has a building which is much more attractive for them to use.” “The project has been in the pipeline since 2011, when the first plans were drawn up,” said Weedons’ Reserve Committee Chairman Peter Holmes. Holmes “With the many challenges we’ve faced along the way, it’s great to see the building finally completed. The whole committee has been heavily involved in the process, and we have had great support from staff at the Council,” Peter said. “This is a Community Centre which will be used by the cricket and tennis clubs, but also by the wider community. It’s a great asset for Weedons and one we should all be proud of.” The new facility has a multipurpose room, a kitchen and storeroom, 24 hour accessible toilet and two changing rooms.

Today, Friday April 12th Darfield ITM celebrates fifteen years of business with a birthday cake to be enjoyed and shared with their customers. Darfield ITM opened in April
2004 as part of the ITM Group which now has over ninety stores around the country. Mitchell Bros Sawmill owners Tony and David Mitchell were approached in 2003 by

Independent Timber Merchants (ITM) as they were looking at increasing their brand and wanting stores in growth areas of the country. Mitchell Bros Sawmillers were well established, had already recognised a need for Hardware and Building materials supply in the area, and saw great potential in joining an exciting new group of independent stores. Darfield ITM began with a team of five - Mark Creamer was the manager, with Chris Mitchell and Brian Redfern in the store, Cameron Haskett ran the yard, and Faye Saunders was in the office. “We were well supported by the c o mm u n i ty a nd q u ic k ly increased the staff and the size of the store,” Faye explained. “We currently have twelve staff

When Mark moved back to Australia in 2009 I became the manager,” Faye said. “At this time Gary Gifkins joined the team as Trade Manager, where he has formed valued and trusted relationships with both suppliers and customers. “Nick Nick Fisher joined the team in 2005, starting in the yards then sales rep, before finishing in 2017. “Phil Phil Potter joined us in 2006 to run the yard, retiring a few years ago, but still enjoys working Saturday mornings,” Faye added. “Steve Steve Borrie joined the team in 2011 and had a significant impact in growing our pole shed buildings’ department creating the brand Heartland Sheds, which Ross Bourhill now runs. Kylie Borrie joined us in 2012, starting part-time in the shop, but progressing quickly, and now working closely with Gary in the Trade Department. Paul Anink and Ed Dance now run the shop, both offering excellent customer service, while working hard on sourcing products to meet the market. They are assisted part-time by Lana HutchinsonHutchinson-Smith and Tony Port. he 700 square metre, Darfield ITM building certainly stands out and is one of the largest buildings in the vicinity. Three sides are of tilt slab construction and careful thought was put into the planning of the whole. Tony Mitchell and ITM Manager Mark Creamer undertook an extensive tour and review of other ITM outlets to ascertain just what would best serve Darfield. ITM is New Zealand’s largest group of independent Timber, Hardware and Building Supplies Merchants and has over eighty stores nationwide, with ten stores now in Canterbury. ITM is a cooperative and all its members are shareholders.
W
hen ITM (Independent Timber Merchants) approached Mitchell Bros Sawmill many years ago about joining their operation, sawmill owners Tony and David Mitchell declined. They were sawmillers first and foremost (Mitchell's sawmill has operated for 58 years) and becoming a dedicated retailer wasn’t a feasible consideration. Since then the business has altered somewhat with approximately 50% of production being exported and the balance being divided between Christchurch wholesale and local retail. The mill site was split making some parts of the operation more inconvenient than they needed to be and so it was decided to keep doing what they do best, from one site and dedicate the other to a committed retail outlet. “It had to be total commitment”, said Tony. “The days of locals supporting local businesses, for no other reason than that they are local, has gone”, he commented. “We needed to have the clout of bulk buying power behind us, thereby enabling prices to compete with Christchurch”, Tony added. “We were aware that our business, in the past, has never really serviced the local area and already we’ve had positive feedback from builders and tradespeople about this new venture”. Time is money for self-employed contractors and the ability to source job requirements locally, quickly and conveniently, hasn’t gone unnoticed. Tony and David are aware that customers nowadays are discerning and demand the best quality product at the most competitive price. People shop around in the 21st century like never before and retail loyalty is now almost non existent. Buyers are likely to source information from the internet or print media before making a considered purchase. The Darfield ITM will stock, at competitive prices, not only the requirements of Builders, Plumbers, Electricians and Painters etc but also every conceivable requirement for the domestic ‘do-ityourselfer’. There are future plans for expansion to include landscape supplies and all will be available under one roof with easy access and ample parking from North Terrace - near the Recreation Centre.
With the well known motto of “We’ll see you right” It’s a promise Darfield ITM will make and more importantly, keep. ITM’s members can really sharpen their pencils when it comes to deals on timber, hardware and building supplies for all projects, be they trade related or for serious DIY or home renovators. The weather couldn't have been better, the riders couldn't have had a better attitude and the support was top notch it was reported, at the McHugh’s Mountain Bike event. The Bike event was the brainchild of DHS student Eddie Adams and brought to fruition with the assistance of Jayde Mayberry from the Selwyn Sports Trust. Accomplished mountain biker Eddie, thought he'd like to have a mountain bike relay race in Malvern for school children to have a go at the sport, and enjoy the experience. Eddie talked to Jayde and together they put Eddie's plan into action on Wednesday, April 3rd. Sixty students from Year 4 through to Year 8 took part in the event. Challenging themselves to either being in a team, going solo and riding a shorter blue course, or a more chal-
lenging yellow course. “The day was epic,” Jayde commented. “Riders had a fantastic time and felt great at the end of their two hour accomplishment.” Award winning mountain biker,, Ethan Rose came along to support, marshal and award the prizes with Eddie. “We appreciate Ethan making the time for the event as he was heading away on Thursday, April 4th as the New Zealand Under 17 champion to take on the Oceania competition in Australia. We wish him the best of luck,” Jayde added.

Primary school students from across New Zealand had the opportunity to learn more about the role of irrigation in food production through a virtual field trip which brought the farm to their classroom. Over 128 primary school classes participated in a Virtual Field Trip designed for students in years five to eight recently and visited a number of locations in Selwyn district. The field trip was organised by CORE Education and IrrigationNZ. The trip allowed classes to take part in three live web conferences where children could ask a range of experts questions, and view eleven short online videos explaining more about water and irrigation. On day one of the field trip the children had the opportunity to find out more about how the recently opened Central Plains Water scheme provides water to farms, and how decisions about who can use water and how much water can be taken are decided. Day two of the trip involved a visit to Sheffield farmer Damon Summerfield’s property. Damon grows a range of arable crops, and also uses irrigation to help finishing lambs on his farm. He exports seeds worldwide and produces wheat for local mills
which produce bread. Damon demonstrated how his irrigation system worked and talked about how it enables him to farm differently. “Having irrigation allows me to grow crops quicker, and to get contracts from a variety of companies for different crops only available to irrigators,” he explained. Since adding irrigation, Damon has started growing chrysanthemum seed for export to Asia and mustard seed, and also improved his crop yields. Day three of the field trip visited IZONE, one of New Zealand’s largest business parks. The Rolleston industrial park is home to many agricultural businesses and Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton discussed how water was important to Selwyn f r o m a n e n v i r o n m e nt a l perspective as well as for recreation and to the economy by supporting farming activity and jobs in places like IZONE. The day also included a visit to the Selwyn River to hear about a planned project to recharge the river using alpine water from the Central Plains Water scheme, so that it will have improved flows over summer in the future. “The virtual field trip is fantastic. It enables children to learn about a range of concepts and subject areas in a really
meaningful way. This technology enables us to engage with a huge number of schools about water, irrigation, and issues like climate change in interactive and exciting way. It can be difficult reaching people in urban areas located a long way from farms, but this concept allows us to bring the farm right into the classroom,” said Elizabeth Soal, Soal Chief Executive of Irrigation New Zealand. Questions asked by members of the 31 participating Canterbury classes included: how is water made, when did irrigation start being used, why do some countries have more water than others and how do we clean our waterways? A class from Our Lady of Assumption School in Christchurch said that the trip, “broadened our knowledge about the future of water in Canterbury”. It also created lots of discussion with the students - as one student said: “Water is liquid gold”. In addition to the 128 classes registered to be part of the trip, many more unregistered classes joined the web conference and have accessed the online resources. Jimmy came home on the last day of the Easter term, and to his horror he found his German Shepherd, Rex, with next door neighbours bunny rabbit in its mouth. The rabbit was obviously dead. Greatly upset, Jimmy panicked thinking, 'If my neighbours find out that Rex killed their bunny, they'll hate me forever.' Jimmy quickly took the rather large bunny, and, placing it in a paper bag deposited in the local incinerator tip. On his way home, Jimmy looked into Animates and bought a rabbit which he gauged was just like the deceased. Back home, Jimmy took the 'new' rabbit and placed it in the open hutch in his neighbour’s garden. Later that evening, Jimmy heard a knock on his front door and opening it he found his next door neighbours bearing the 'new' rabbit in their arms. 'Look,' squeaked his neighbour, 'yesterday Billy was dead and we buried him 4 feet down in the garden. Today we come home and find that not only is he alive and well, but he has grown several more teeth, but also he has shrunk. It's a miracle.'
