The biennial South Island Agricultural Field Days have just concluded in Kirwee, after running from March, 27th 29th. The event attracted thousands of people from rural communities over the three days of its duration.

The late Hamish Reid was a vital part of the Field Days committee for twelve years and was its Chairman in 2003.

Hamish’s family reside in the Kirwee area and it was fitting that one of its members should make a very special presentation at this year’s event.

“Hamish was instrumental in initiating the move of Field Days to Kirwee,” commented his wife Andrea Reid.

Reid The Hamish Reid Memorial Trophy for Best Overall Site was presented this year by Hamish and Andrea’s son, James Reid on behalf of the Reid family.

“I heard comments that he

Dad would of loved it,” Andrea said. “Congratulations to PGG Wrightson for being the Overall Winner,” she added proudly.

“This memorial is a lovely acknowledgement of his memory, it was definitely something he was passionate about,” Andrea concluded.

Eleven year old Tobi Moore from Darfield rides a KTM85 motocross bike and does so with competition-winning skill.

March 30th and 31st saw Tobi in Invercargill competing at the So ut h l an d C h am p s an d emerging after a five race battle at second overall - an outstanding result. Tobi competed in the 8-11 year old, 85/150cc class and produced a 3rd, 8th, 4th, 2nd and 2nd from the five races which resulted

him taking second place overall in foggy, murky, conditions with limited visibility.

Tobi will now go on to compete in the 2019 New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships in the North Island at Himitangi, which will take place between the 26th and 28th of April.

Tobi makes mention of his awesome coaches James and Gary Docherty and gratefully thanks his current sponsors for all their support, He also

congratulates all the local riders that competed and added that he’s looking forward to competing on the National circuit again.

The Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) will mark its 41st year of operation at its AGM on Tuesday, April 9th at the Selwyn Gallery.

In his Chairperson’s report, Philip Baldwin will look back over some of the Arts Council’s highlights in 2018, when MCAC celebrated the twentieth year in the life of the Selwyn Gallery, as well as the Arts Council’s fortieth anniversary. “Looking to the future, our biggest c h a l l e n g e i s r ec r u i t i n g volunteers who are willing to give a few hours a month to keeping the Selwyn Gallery open, working on special events with our Performing Arts committee, or helping to organise Darfield Artweek,” Philip said. Among the events

planned for this year are a ‘garage band’ concert with Moana Maniapoto on Tuesday, May 14th and a performance by The Kugels, a ‘klesmer band’, on Thursday, August 29th.

“Keep an eye on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ selwynartgallerynz) for updates on the Malvern 48-hour FilmFest Challenge, scheduled for July 12th to 14th. The public screening and prizes will support the filmmaking dreams of locals, young and old,” Philip explained.

For those of you that are considering having your home fly and spider proofed here are some things that may help with your decision: Years ago the products were very smelly and left a brown sticky mess over everything they touched. Today with the more sophisticated products that we use (and we at Spiderban only use New Zealand made products) there is no sticky mess and the smell is minimal. The products are all water based and although they do leave a slightly milky film on glass; being water based it is easily removed. Sometimes clients think our products have marked their windows, but it's not the case and the products have all been extensively tested. Quite often glass will have a mineral residue on it from rain or irrigation systems, depending on the water in the area.

Because our product is milky looking it shows up the mineral deposits when sprayed onto the glass. To spray your house properly we need to get a coating on the frames which does mean getting it on the glass.

Windows are the one of the first points of entry for spiders, through the weep holes and gaps around the frames. When we spray the inside of a house you must be out of the house for three to four hours and the house must be prepared. We do a walk around and check every house, before we treat it.

We do not spray inside with a back pack garden sprayer! We use an electric machine that puts the product on at around about the same fineness as aerosol canned fly spray. Once the product is dry it is safe (that's why you have to be out three to four hours). Our spray will protect your home from whitetails, flies, all spiders, fleas and silver fish.

We do inside of over 50% of the homes we treat, and for flies that will take care of them for about twelve months.

Kirwee Players held auditions recently for their forthcoming production of ‘Fidler on the Roof’ and one thing that came through repeatedly, was the tradition of families being involved. This year’s lead of ‘Tevye’ will be performed by Dayle Stoliker, Stoliker with his wife Lesley, Lesley playing the role of ‘Yente’ and their son Joshua playing ‘Fredka’. The Stott family - founding members of Kirwee Players - have three generations involved with Grandad David, David this year’s Production Manager, his wife Isabelle, Isabelle the wardrobe mistress, their son Ed will play the role of Mordcha. Ed’s son Toby, Toby is doing the very energetic ‘bottle dance’, along with several other young and talented individuals including Brock Cottrell, Cottrell George Long and Thomas Soper all at present in Shrek Jnr (April 12th, 13th and 14th).

Thomas’s father David is in the chorus, and father and daughter, Lester Burton (Rabbi) and Victoria Burton join the cast too. Husband and wife duo, Jeremy (Perchik) and Izzy Tocker (Hodel) are joined this year by Jeremy’s mum Carol Smith.

The show is directed by the very capable Mabel Knight, Knight supported by experienced musical director, Diane Coad and Kirwee newcomer, Melody Hoglund takes on the role of choreographer.

Fonterra’s Darfield site is lifting the lid on dairy production this weekend at a sell-out event showing visitors how they turn raw milk into dairy deliciousness that’s enjoyed around the world.

“We take the best milk from Canterbury and turn it into products that make their way across the globe to places like South East Asia, China and the Middle East,” Darfield Operations Manager Harriet Van GenneGenne-Knape said.

“Our products are valued across the world, and we’re pleased to produce them at such an efficient and sustainable site.

Sustainability is a real focus for us, and we’re on track to saving around a hundred tanker loads of water a day thanks to a new reverse osmosis plant.”

Darfield is one of Fonterra’s newest sites, built in 2012. Its two hundred and eighty, strong team can process up to 7.2 million litres of milk a day -that’s two hundred and fifty seven tanker loads! The site is also home to the world’s joint - largest milk dryer and a distribution centre the size of seven rugby fields.

The restoration of Cotons' Cottage after the earthquakes has left Heritage New Zealand with some ongoing problems regarding the surface finish and the floor of the Cottage. It is necessary to do some major repair work to bring the historic building back to a condition which will ensure it will last for the next one hundred years.

Consequently, the contents of the cottage need to be removed and will be temporarily stored in the Museu m bui ld ing. T his necessitates the Museum and Cottage being closed to visitors.

On Thursday, March 28th the Darfield Domain was host to over two hundred Year 0 - 2 Malvern students at the Selwyn Sports Trust Fundamental Movement Spectacular (FMS).

This event is similar in concept to the Sports Spectacular held recently, but the children are

playing games that are focussed on the development of their fundamental skills and movement patterns.

Physical Activity Leaders, or PALs, from Year 6 were the teachers for this opportunity.

The PALs programme is to develop the leadership skills of

Year 6 students and to encourage them to lead physically active opportunities within their schools. At the FMS they chose a game, learnt it and then delivered it to groups of children as they rotated around various stations. It was a fantastic learning opportunity for all involved!

A big thanks goes to the PALs and the schools for supporting this initiative and the parents and helpers with transport.

Wednesday, March 27th saw the annual Canterbury Interschools Dressage Competition held at Mclean’s Island on the outskirts of Christchurch. This is a fiercely fought competition that involves the best dressage riders from each school competing for the overall trophy. Each team consists of four riders and their horse or pony. Two riders ride two tests at level one and two riders ride two level two tests.

All four team members scores count toward the final results.

As teams rely on all scores, consistency is the key to success.

This year Darfield High School had three teams entered with the DHS Maroon team bringing home top honours. The team consisted of Katherine Hadler riding Hakuna Matata, Caitlin Rayne riding Brentwood Surprise, Charlotte Thomas riding Time After Time and Georgia Allison riding Hokey Pokey.

This team beat Lincoln Red who were placed second and Rangi Ruru Gold who came in at third.

DHS’s other teams also performed well with some personal bests achieved.

Additionally Katherine Hadler (DHS) won the award for the best combined score overall; a well deserved achievement proving that both she and her mount’s consistent team work, paid off.

It was reported to be a fun day with great sportsmanship from all the teams entered, lots of lifetime friends are made at days like these.

They bought their first Having competed together for three ye ars, Darfi eld’s motorsport husband and wife duo Garet and Gemma Thomas, part of the Woodend Automotive Racing Team, have had just had recent success in the Westland Rally. They drive a 2008 Subaru WRX STI, which was built by Gemma’s dad, Dave Ollis of Woodend Automotive. The pair are currently competing in the New Zealand Rally Championship Cat 5A and the Mainland Rally Series, of which the Westland Rally was a part.

The Westland Rally is a

Gemma’s, as they love the tight twisty forestry roads and is an event with a bit of everything in it. However it wasn’t all plain sailing as their day didn't start wonderfully when the engine encountered a problem. This was sorted out in service and they headed off to stages three and four, managing to bring in a fifth and a second, putting them back up into contention for overall placings. The rest of the day continued going to plan and Garet and Gemma managed a third in SS5, a stage win in SS6 and top 5 stage times in SS7 and SS8 to bring them up to second overall.

Gemma was originally introduced to the sport of motor racing by her dad, who began competing again after a twenty five year hiatus. Both Gemma and Garet come from motocross backgrounds, and had both always had an interest in motorsport. When each were offered the chance at codriving just over three years ago Garet quickly discovered he would rather be behind the

rally car an EVO 2 and competed with great results in their first year together winning E class (pre 96) in the Mainland Series.

The following year Gemma and Garet were given the opportunity to drive a new car, built by Gemma’s dad. After a niggly start to the year, their results picked up and they finished third overall at the Nelson Rally and second overall at the Hanmer Rally, before finishing with a fourth overall at the Ashley Forest Rally Sprint; nailing the under one minute mark (59.67sec).

Garet and Gemma are extremely grateful to their sponsors for all their support, knowing that without it their focus may not be so clearly on the competition.

The pair are looking forward to Rally Otago which is to be held from April 12th - 13th and which is the first round of the New Zealand Rally Championships.

Sixth Sense At Darfield Automotive we have recently purchased a new hoist, new wheel alignment machine, new scan tool and new hand tools. All very impressive and clever, plus make our job much easier, but the best tools we have cannot be bought, we are born with them. We must remember before we can repair your vehicle, we have to know what’s wrong with it. If we’re honest, most of the time it’s one of, or a combination of, the following that tells us what’s wrong, and where to look. It’s also the reason you bring your vehicle to us, you sense there is something wrong, from your years of experience.

As automotive engineers (mechanics) we use our years of experience and skills, both learned and taught, to diagnose and repair your vehicle.

Let me explain:

Smell: “It smells hot”. When you think about it how can you smell hot? But it’s the most common smell complaint.

It’s normally after a good long drive, the exhaust will burn off any dirt, dust or oil, but sometimes it’s coolant leaking, or even plastic bags stuck on the exhaust.

Well worth checking out though because anything leaking on to the exhaust is cause for concern. Other smell complaints are dampness, or mildew, and this is often caused by mould growing in the air conditioning

system. Normally a cabin filter replacement, and an air-con disinfectant, clears this up.

Sound: Knocks, squeaks, scrapes, whirrs, beeps; you name, it we’ve heard it, or been told about it. The biggest thing for us is to know is under what conditions it makes the noise. Acceleration, deceleration, over bumps, around corners, braking.

We prefer to go for a drive with you to recreate the noise, then we know we are chasing the same noise!

Sight: You might see a fluid leak on the garage floor. Take note of what colour it is and if it evaporates. While you’re looking around, look at your tyres and see if they look flat, or bald, and look at the WOF and service stickers. Note their dates and if you can’t read them it’s generally a sign you need a new one!

Touch/feel:

suck and blow through a blocked window washer hose and they don’t taste too good either. Not recommended.

Sixth sense: Using all our normal senses and combined with our years of experience we like to think we have a sixth sense. Sometimes just talking to you, a quick look under the bonnet, a quick road test and lift on the hoist is enough to diagnose the problem.

There are multiple electronic sensors in and around the modern car, but the finest tuned are the senses we all possess.

Locally based Ruwan Wijayasena has just been named as ‘Share Farmer of the Year’ 2019 at the regional final (Canterbury / North Otago) of the Dairy Industry Awards. Despite some literal and figurative clouds overhead, the 2019 South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) was a success, organisers said.

The biennial event took place on March 27th to 29th at the SIAFD’s permanent site outside of Kirwee and it hosted more exhibitors than ever before and more machinery was at work during the in-field demonstrations.

SIAFD media spokesperson Daniel Schat comented that despite the tragic events in Christchurch on March 15th and the flooding that prevented some West Coasters from attending the event, the car parks at Field Days were near capacity and attendance was strong.

A moment of silence was held at noon on the opening day to honour the memory of the victims of the terrorist attacks at the Christchurch mosques.

“We had 640 exhibitors this year compared to less than 600 at our last event in 2017.

Feedback from them has been very positive. The introduction of the Diesel Tune NZ Tractor pull was another a positive addition with crowds of people gathered there throughout the field days,” Daniel said.

Sage The SIAFD site has twenty hectares of exhibitions and ten hectares devoted to machinery demonstrations. Machinery demonstrations organiser Andrew Stewart said the demonstration area included 4ha of grass, 1ha of fodder beet, 1ha of maize for harvesting and 3ha of grain stubble for cultivation. “Twelve different companies demonstrated their machines and that included four companies who demonstrated four different machines,” Andrew said. “We also had four or five machines that were new to New Zealand. They included the Weaving disc drill from the UK, a drone that does spot spraying with a five-litre tank and a fire suppressant system for combine harvesters.”

SIAFD is organised entirely by a team of 27 volunteers, this year captained by organising

chairman Rodney Hadfield.

Hadfield With the 2019 event now in the rear view mirror, they will take a break and then in a year’s time they will start getting ready for the next event, which takes place March 24-26, 2021.

With the roar now underway it is a prudent time to raise the issue of firearms safety.

First and foremost every firearms user should be very familiar with the seven basic rules of the Firearms Code.

Statistically during the roar this year, somewhere in New Zealand, a hunter will be shot, and likely killed, when out deerstalking in the backcountry.

Sadly this happened last year during the roar in the North Island. Why it happens is quite simply that the person firing the firearm has not adhered to rule four of the Arms Code - ‘identify your target beyond all doubt’!

Twelve years ago a good friend of mine, with whom I had trained and studied for four years as a Ranger in the New Zealand Forest Service, was shot and killed by his hunting companion on the West Coast. Bill lived for his hunting and outdoors

and would still be alive today if his mate had positively identified his target.

Several years ago in Fiordland I attended a hunting accident in rugged bush where two brothers were out hunting together. They separated and one shot the other through his buttock, when in pursuit of a fleeing hind.

Thankfully this man was located some hours later, winched out of dense bush upon nightfall, and flown urgently to hospital. Fortunately he survived. Again the brother who fired the shot did not adhere to rule four. In my lifetime I personally know four hunters who have shot a human while deerstalking. A pretty sad statistic.

Being a holder of a firearms licence is a privilege, not a right. Police make stringent background enquiries into every application as to that person's suitability to be a fit and proper person to possess a firearms licence. Firearms Codes can be downloaded from the New Zealand Police website.

Please remember to obtain permission from landowners before venturing on to private land to hunt and if the landowner declines to give you permission - that is his, or her, right, please respect that. Permits for Department of Conservation administered land can be obtained online.

Under the Wild Animal Control Act 1977 the current penalty for hunting on property without the authority of the landowner (ie. poaching) is a $100,000 fine and/or two years’ imprisonment.

Still on the theme of ‘positively identify your target beyond all doubt’ - I would urge any deer stalkers getting to around the age of forty, or older, to make an eye specialist appointment now. Have your eyesight examined and checked before you head out this roar.

Let’s hope there are no hunting fatalities during this 2019 roar.

For young, aspiring hunters in our community here are a few useful tips before you head out in the roar.

Take the time now to sight in your rifle, get to know where the projectile is hitting at different distances. (If you are stalking in the bush during the roar, your shots are most likely going to be taken in the five to ten metre range, out to maybe twenty metres maximum.)

It is beneficial to get out into your chosen hunting area now to survey the landscape and get to know the lie of the land, look for stag rubbings and wallow holes.

Speak to any older and experienced hunters, you will gain a lot of useful knowledge from listening to their hunting exploits over the years.

Now is the time to start organising your gear (GPS, emergency locator beacon, compass, maps, emergency survival blanket, cigarette lighter, matches, food etc). I find it is a good idea to take a piece of car inner tube rubber which will ignite easily if you are caught out for the night and need to get a fire going fast, in wet conditions.

Choose your hunting partners wisely and positively identify your target.

When you return from a hunting trip be sure to safely secure your firearm, in a locked gun cabinet, with bolt and ammunition locked away separately. Don’t be like one hunter several years ago when I was working in Southland. This man was out hunting in Fiordland one morning during the roar, he returned home and locked his rifle away. Later that same evening he took the rifle from his safe to clean it in his lounge. As he was cleaning the barrel the rifle fired and blew his thumb clean off, before the projectile proceeded on through his roof in a built-up, residential area. This man had neglected to unload his rifle, remove the bolt and all ammunition; a lesson foolishly learnt the hard way!

On the weekend of March 30th, 31st, the Hororata Golf Club were hosts for the interprovincial competition between Central Canterbury and Buller/ Westland. This is an annual representative tournament which saw Central Canterbury defending the title after winning it last year at Ellesmere. Seven of the sixteen Central Canterbury players were from Hororata Golf Club, which is undoubtedly a great effort.

The sixteen players from each side teed off at 12pm on Saturday for the first round and then stepped up again at 8am on Sunday for the second and deciding round.

Update - Monday, March 25th 2019 The Malvern Community Board had its third meeting of the year on Monday in the Darfield Library and Service Centre. Council’s Business Relations Manager, Stephen Hill, Hill was in attendance.

Stephen showed the Board some recent booklets, pamphlets and brochures promoting Council services and activities, produced by the marketing and communications teams for which he is responsible.

The Board endorsed its Community Services Awards Guidelines and Nomination Form, and agreed to hold the Awards event in August at the Darfield Service Centre. The event will be advertised in due course. The Board also talked about attending Anzac Day Services across the Malvern area and wider District. Regarding the Christmas in the Park event, the Board resolved to put a process in place for purchasing reasonably priced Christmas presents for children, at the event.

General Board business included reports from the Chair and Board members. Board members discussed the issue of recycling in Windwhistle; the Malvern A & P Show held in Sheffield recently; and the role of the roving secretary provided by Council.

Also in attendance at the Board meeting was Council’s Planning Manager, Jesse Burgess.

Burgess Jesse updated the Board on the latest District Plan Review developments, noting in particular: 1. District Plan review was going well, on time and on budget 2. Workshop mode currently, reviewing various topics 3. Workshop topics range from legal, economic analysis, heritage items and trees; tourism and transport.

Jesse told the Board the DPR Committee will aim to write the draft plan during August, meet with the new Council in December after which a period for consultation will follow. He said staff were

currently working closely together with staff from Ministry for the Environment and Waimakariri District Council, amongst others.

Prior to Monday’s meeting, several Board members started getting together all of the Sister City gifts they received over a number of years, the idea being to look at display options at the Library in order to share the beautiful art and gifts with the wider community.

The Board is also pleased to announce that it approved two requests for grants from its Discretionary Fund. One for the Selwyn United Football Club U17 Team for a tournament and a second for the Hororata Community Trust in relation to the Night Glow event scheduled for later this year.

Cole Atutolu took out the ‘Primary Batsman of the Year’ award, Jesse Frew was recognised as ‘U17 Batsman of the Year’ and Club President, Dave Beatty the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award. Well done to all recipients.

WEIGH-IN 28TH APRIL The final two championships have been held over the last month.

The Development Mixed Pairs, for players with up to eight years’ playing time, were held at Kirwee on Sunday, March 17th with a field of ten teams competing.

Dave Holland and Russell Morrison from Darfield played consistently all day and were the outstanding team of the event, winning all four rounds.

Sunday, March 24th the Malvern Fours Championship (Cogswell Cup) was held at West Melton Green who were also the sponsors. After having been postponed from the scheduled date in February the players experienced a lovely day.

The third round of the Club championships was held on March 23rd. A warm but overcast day greeted a small band of shooters for the final round of the Club championship. During the afternoon the wind built in strength, but varied in direction.

Allan and Bevan opened with very creditable 50.07s at 300 yards, only to be topped by Mike who shot a perfect 60.10 - his first.
