The Malvern Show, which took place last Saturday, March 23rd was extremely well attended by both competitors and the general public. Gate takings were up from last year and there were record entries in the Horse, Donkey, Art and Poultry sections, it was reported. The Trade section was full and the committee couldn’t have squeezed another exhibit in, they commented. The weather was a comfortable temperature, neither too hot or cold and the organisers had laid on a sp ec tac u l ar ev e nt. T h e continuous sounds of the NZ Army Band, plus the Ellesmere Pipe Band ringing around the grounds, made for a positively festive atmosphere. Add to this the wood chopping, speed shear and the success of the new Brick Wall competition along with the Rev and Ride - the organisers of this 120th Show and its President, Richard Hill can be justifiably pleased with what they achieved. As mentioned, this was the 120th Malvern A & P Show and having attended 83 of them was Cecily Wright, Wright who turns 94 this year. She first attended the Show at the age of ten and hasn’t missed one since. The oldest living ex-President was also in attendance at this year’s show - Sir Alan Wright, Wright who officiated in 1982. “The Donkey Section led the Grand Parade, in behind the Ellesmere Pipe Band, and along with their Judge, Sandy Croote from the USA,” commented section convenor Melissa Jebson. Jebson “Sandy thoroughly enjoyed her day, along with the stock and the friendly competitors. On the Sunday I took her over to Akaroa so she saw a little bit of the South Island while she was here. The Donkey classes attracted record entries,” Melissa added.
The Supreme Livestock exhibit for the 120th year, judged by Tim Black the retiring President of the Canterbury A & P Association, went to Harriet Redmond (Ashburton) and
Christine Weal with their Saddle Hunter ‘Ngahiwi Frostie’. Harriet was presented with a Royal Agricultural Society Medal in recognition of this success. The Supreme Indoor exhibit
