By Lucinda Jarvis. Local Ethan Rose (15) from Coalgate competed at the MTBNZ National Cross Country Champs in Rotorua on Saturday, March 16th. Ethan’s dad Adam commented that it was a very sad start to the event after the terrible attacks in Christchurch the day before. At the start of each race there was a moment’s silence to show respect for the lives lost and the families affected. Ethan's U17's race was the first of the day, along with all the masters’ age grades and U15's. It was a mass start of ninety plus riders, with the U17's having to start behind a larger masters’ field. The top U17 boys battled their way to the front, before being sent the wrong way and having to run through the on-coming riders, to get back on-course and to the front of the race again! Ethan took the lead halfway round the first lap and pushed hard to the finish in a time of 53 minutes and 34 seconds, taking the overall win by 1 minute and 46 seconds over Adam Francis, (16) from Palmerston North. Third was Jacob Turner (15) from Rangiora who was 4 minutes

Ethan's lap times would have seen him battling for the lead in both the U19 and U23 race that was later in the day. “I tried to keep a calm head during such a hectic start knowing it was the same for everyone,” Ethan said. “Once out in front I put my head down and rode hard to break everyone early in the race,” he added. Ethan now hopes to take his good form to Australia for the Oceania Championships on April 9th.

I speak for all the Malvern News team when I say we were shocked to the core and saddened beyond belief, by last Friday’s slaughtering of fifty innocent New Zealanders, or those visiting with New Zealanders. How an individual can harbour such racist hate is hard to fathom, but that is NOT how we want to be, or how we want our children to be, nor do we want to be thought of in such terms. Our hearts go out to those affected (and everyone has been, in some way), their lives and ours, will never ever, be the same again. Kia Kaha Christchurch and the New Zealand Muslim community and eternal thanks to the first responders and those still performing their duties professionally and with compassion.

We learned this from the earthquakes. When tragedy occurs, one of the more helpful things to do is to find opportunities for gathering as a community and not to isolate ourselves in the sorrow. We also need meaningful ways to express our grief, support one another, and respond. So on Saturday there was a post on Facebook inviting people to gather on Sunday at 9.20 a.m. at the Darfield Trinity Church bell tower. We began with a short prayer, a time of silence, and then tolled the bell 49 times (sadly learning later in the day that the total dead had reached fifty). Roughly 120 people assembled at the bell tower in the middle of their Sunday morning walk, or on their way to church, or came out specially because they felt it was important to do so, as an act of solidarity with Muslim brothers and sisters. A bunch of flowers was left at the bell tower. A group of mothers were beginning to put together care packages for a local family they knew to be impacted by the violence that took place. Parents were helping their children, and their grandchildren, to talk and the Give a Little and related pages to support the families, have grown exponentially from $250,000. on Saturday morning to a staggering $6.3 million by Sunday night. Darfield wasn’t the only place locally that came together to show support - 44 people gathered at the St Peter’s Springfield Church bell and on the side of State Highway 73, Arthur’s Pass another 17 met at the bell tower. Bearing a sign saying “please help yourself to create a bouquet of flowers to give to Christchurch’s Muslim community” and a small heart - these beautiful blooms were left out side Johnny Fresh Greengrocers on Monday morning.
Duncan Sole, has a small local Rolleston Business called Ministry of the Mind Music Ltd. He promotes local artists, runs events and has a Recording Studio. As part of that he also has a large network of fellow musicians. “I thought it would be great to get these musicians together and put on a Benefit Concert for the Victims of The Mosque Shooting,” Duncan explained. “We will have ten local bands performing at the Lincoln Events Centre from 6.30pm6.30pm-9.30pm this Friday, March 22nd. “The reason is twofold, Firstly we all need to do what we can to help in the wake of this unacceptable tragedy; singing is what we do, so that’s what we will do! “The other reason is, I believe we need to gather and be with our communities, We need to hug, we need to heal and we need to help.”

Stefan Riederer came to Darfield with his family in 2002 and began his Chiropractic practise alongside Gnomes Ski Shop in their old, South Terrace, building. In 2007 Darfield Chiropractic made the move around the corner to Ross street, before Stefan took his practice home to Greendale, in 2016. The current cottage clinic is in a rural setting, with wonderful views and peaceful surroundings. Stefan, who admits to having no intention of retiring, enjoys his work and welcomes the opportunity of now working with new chiropractor at the practise Julia Jay. Apart from chiropractic treatments, Stefan also offers biodynamic cranial work; used on babies after a difficult birth and for adults with head injuries and headaches, along with gentle mobilisation individually tailored to a patients’ need. Another service he offers is dry needling; trigg er point acupuncture often used on patients with chronic problems like tight muscles, sports’ injuries and sciatica. Before arriving in New Zealand and joining Darfield Chiropractic Julia ran her own successful clinic in West Wales and gained her qualifications in the United Kingdom. “She is an experienced, gentle and thorough practitioner who treats patients of all ages and can adapt a range of treatment styles to suit people’s needs,” Stefan explained. Julia has trained in pregnancy and paediatric care, but is
equally happy to work with older patients. She has a special interest in vestibular rehabilitation, which is used for patients with concussion, whiplash and inner ear problems. “As a qualified rowing coach she understands the needs of both weekend warriors and highly competitive athletes,” Stefan added. “Julia has coached and treated Paralympians, and has worked extensively on rehabilitation programmes with stroke patients, as well as patients with cancer. Additionally she enjoys the challenge of finding new and different ways to solve problems,” Stefan said. Julia is a keen gardener and firmly believes that bodies, like plants, can thrive if they are given the right conditions, and the right support. “Regardless of a patient’s age, fitness level, or their goals for well-being, Julia will work to help them reach their health goals and maintain them.” The busy Clinic is run by Corinne Riederer, Riederer practice manager, with support from receptionist Margaret MacDonald, MacDonald who has been with the practice for many years. After first starting work for Darfield Pharmacy forty years ago pharmacist Nigel Trolove has decided to hang up his spatula and retire from the profession. He first came to do a locum for John and Gaynor Morris (owners of the Darfield Pharmacy at that time) who were off to Australia for a holiday. Also at that time, he and his wife Josie's first child was born at Darfield hospital, and in due course another three children were born there. “The profession has certainly changed in the ensuing forty years,” Nigel noted. “The typewriter was the new technology in those days! Nourish, an initiative of Two Rivers Trust, provides a forum for learning about growing and utilising food in a sustainable and health-giving manner. They do this through monthly free events that encourage the sharing of knowledge, ideas, skills, experience and resources. Over the past three years, Nourish, has run ma ny informative evenings and day workshops. They have the intent of providing a place of connection and learning where people who are enthusiastic about growing food can come together, on a monthly basis, to
discuss, debate, encourage, share, and learn together on a variety of topics. Over the past three years Nourish has visited such topics as soil health, compost making, bee-keeping, grafting and pruning workshops, seed saving, seed raising, herbs, garden planning, permaculture and more. In January this year local woman Wendy C hamberlain ably demonstrated the art of preserving and jam making, giving the group attending, her best tips, gleaned from a lifetime love of preserving and providing nourishing and wholesome food,

The Kirwee Community Church has the privilege of hosting Dr Cecil Peasley from Port Elizabeth, South Africa on Tuesday, April 9th. Dr Peasley is a husband, father, grandfather, pastor, preacher, teacher and trainer/ mentor, and he brings a wealth of practical experience to New Zealand. He has also served as an honorary executive director of the South African Association of Evangelists from 2000 to 2013 and is a world renowned international communicator. Dr Peasley was born in Port
Elizabeth to missionary parents. He came to Christ at the age of fifteen following the trauma of a snake bite, and immediately surrendered to the call of the ministry. He graduated from the Baptist Theological College of South Africa in 1969 and pastored at three churches in Durban and Johannesburg. In 1980 he responded to the call of World Evangelism. Dr Peasley is currently in New Zealand speaking at men’s groups, church services and other organised programmes and he will be sharing his recent

During February a foraging outing to the RedZone in Christchurch gave folks the opportunity and freedom to wander and explore, enjoying the beauty and abundance of the park-like post-quake surroundings there. This month, being apple season, Nourish have arranged for a Skype-interview with Mark Christensen, Christensen an interesting and knowledgeable speaker who runs the Heritage Food Trust in Wanganui. He will share some of the information about the health giving benefits of ‘Monty’s Surprise’ apples. Additionally, Springfield local Dorothy Innes will give a demonstration of how to make cider vinegar from home -grown apples. Homemade preserves and baking, petting zoo and pony rides, scarecrows, cotton candy and bacon butties, plus over one hundred stalls full of beautiful crafts, homewares, clothing, food, health and beauty products; the forthcoming West Melton Country Fete on Sunday, March 31st, will have something for everyone. Plans are well underway for the Fete which will be held at West Melton School from 10am to 3pm with entry by a small gold coin donation on the gate. Organisers have arranged to have the day filled with fabulous entertainment from local bands, dancers and solo artists, plus loads of children’s games and activities - mini jeeps, bumper boats, hungerball and of course, farm animals. A wonderful creative section of the Fete will be the ‘Design and Make a Scarecrow’ to bring along on the day. This competition is open to all children in the community, not just West Melton School pupils and there are some great prizes to be won. Scarecrows (well named and with their owners/creators age and contact phone number) need to make their way to the main stage at 1:30pm in preparation
for the 2pm judging. While all this is going on parents can grab a coffee, a raffle ticket (and hopefully a prize!) and browse the many stalls. There will also be a great range of food trucks available throughout the day. It was reported that the 2017 Fete was a huge success with over 5,000 people through the gates with the School able to raise enough funds for a new playground that the children all love and enjoy daily. This year’s Fete has attracted some much appreciated sponsors hip from loca l businesses for which organisers are very grateful.

By Lucinda Jarvis. A group of seventeen past and current Malvern Women’s Hockey Players travelled to Hamilton from March 3rd to 9th, to compete in the New Zealand Masters’ Hockey Tournament. The team entered the highly contested Womens 35+ Division; this is the first time in over twenty years Malvern has entered a Senior Women’s team into a National Tournament. The Division was split into two pools (eleven teams altogether) with Malvern being seeded eleventh. First game up was against the reigning Champions Wellington: Malvern were delighted to win 1-0. The Team then travelled down to Rotorua to play against Waikato: which Malvern again won 6-1. Next game was against Tasman, this was reported to be an incredibly tough game, which Malvern narrowly lost 2-1. Tasman went on to play in the final. The final pool game was back in Rotorua against North Harbour which Malvern again won 2-1. Malvern were placed second in

When the Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade hold their Wild West evening on Friday, March 22nd it is to raise funds for the forthcoming Sky Tower Stair Challenge, supporting Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. The Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge is one of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s largest fundraising events. Each year firefighters from around New Zealand, Australia and the USA gain sponsorship and compete in this amazing event at Auckland’s Sky Tower. The event has consistently raised over $1 million each year for the past three. Four Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade members, Stu Begg, Dale Evans, Jonathan Hamilton and Blair Jones aim to compete in this year’s Sky Tower Stair Challenge, which will take place in May. Participants will climb the 328 metre tower of the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, with its 51 flights of stairs and 1,103 individual steps, while wearing up to 25 kg of fire brigade kit.
“We do the challenge to support the cause, it is great for team bonding and good fitness training,” said Kirwee team organiser and member Blair Jones. government funding. Funds raised will be used to support LBC work in the community, including core services such as personalised support for patients and their families. It includes running support groups, programmes, hospital visits and being there at the end of the phone to answer questions and concerns patients and families may have, plus provide information about their condition. LBC also provides funding for research into finding cures and better treatments, raising awareness of these diseases and advocating on behalf of patients.

As a landowner you may be approached by a neighbour to provide sign off on their project as it may affect you in some manner. They may want to set up a commercial activity that increases car movements on the road, or they may want to put a shed close to your boundary where it may shade your property. In any case, you have rights when it comes to deciding if you want to give your written approval to a project. As with any local government process there is some paperwork involved with written approvals. Usually, a Council form and a copy of the resource consent application which is due to be sent to Council is provided. Sometimes, the consent application may have already been sent to Council, and Council have told the neighbour that you are potentially affected. You should always be provided a copy of the plans and written resource consent application when your approval is being sought, and you are not obligated to provide it there and then. You might want to seek an expert’s opinion, such as a resource consent planner, or your
wish to provide written approvals or not. If you do, it tells the Council that either you’re not affected by your neighbour’s activity, or you are happy to live with any effects. When dec iding on th e application, Council will disregard any effect on your property if you have given your written approval. Written approvals cannot be conditional on the neighbour doing something they have not outlined they will do in the application for resource consent. For instance, you cannot write on the form that you give your approval, if your neighbour pays for the boundary fence. However, if you wish to negotiate a deal with your neighbour so that they carry out some works that benefit you, or ensure you are not adversely affected by their activity, we recommend that you either get a separate legal agreement drawn up or, the neighbour amends their application to include the works before you sign off on the project. If your neighbour has been told they have to get your approval, and you choose not to provide
any other persons who were also identified and decided not to give written approval. This is called limited notification and gives you the opportunity to make a formal submission in opposition or support to the application to explain what the concerns are. If this progresses to a hearing the neighbour will be required to pay for the costs of the Council staff and decision makers at the hearing. Negotiating with a neighbour about an activity that might impact on how you enjoy your property or use of your land can be a very stressful process. The written approvals system under the Resource Management Act (RMA) enables you to choose to say if you are happy with the proposal or not, but only if you are considered an affected party. In any case you are not obliged to sign off on an activity. The effect of not providing approvals is that Council are obliged to give you the opportunity to make a submission and must consider any adverse effects on you in the decision making process.

Three opportunities, two years of doubt and one new knee got ex-local Teisha O’Connell back to where she never thought she would be, back playing netball for Canterbury. Playing beside the people she had left behind with her good-for-nothing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Teisha first started playing netball at the age of five, with her first two years spent playing indoor seven aside at Howzat in Christchurch. Teisha moved to Darfield when she was ten years old and she played Saturday netball at the Darfield Netball Centre. During this time she represented Malvern for a couple of years before moving into the Selwyn
Competition in Lincoln. Rolleston Netball Club picked her up for their Premiere A team when she was thirteen, the same year she also got chosen for the U17 Canterbury Country team. Things started getting very exciting (and busy) for Teisha and her whānau. She played in this representative team for three years until her talent got her an offer of a Netball Scholarship to St. Margaret’s College. Teisha played her last year of U17’s competition for Christchurch and captained the team to their first National title in around thirty years. Teisha commented that this was one of the biggest highlights of her school years.

To the Editors: It may seem rather trite in this time of turmoil, but Darfield High School had a cat which was killed on the road outside late last week. I'm a volunteer Reader Writer at the School. It was always a delight to see the skilful way Felix had made the School home - curled up on a chair in the staffroom, on the counter of an administrator’s office (especially Jill who was his special caregiver) or waiting at the door for someone to exit, so he could too. A very handsome and remarkable cat who gave real character to the School and added a lovely atmosphere to the bustling admin area. It would be so lovely if his passing was marked by a little mention in the local news. With maybe a mention to please stop if you hit an animal on the road (this was appreciated on this occasion), check its well-being, try to establish who owns and loves it and lay it to the side, if all else fails.

It’s fair to say that netball consumed her high school years and she finally achieved her goal of making the Canterbury NPC team at eighteen years old. She had been given the privilege of playing with, and against, top New Zealand netballer’s like Jo Trip, Trip Kayla Cullen and Juliana Naoupu. Naoupu The year following was horrific for Teisha, when she lost the ability to do the one thing she had always done; “rupturing my ACL meant I had to teach my right leg how to walk again. I can confirm it was definitely a difficult time for both me and my parents, who had welcomed an agitated and upset twenty year old back into their home,” explained Teisha. Playing netball again seemed impossible and Teisha had given up on the hope that she would ever return to the game that had given her so much in life. “My first glimpse of hope was six months later, during my rehab with Matthew Brettkelly, of Darfield Physio and Gym, and I was back to running, but not quite back to the netball court. Now, two years later I’m back out on court playing in the BEKO Netball League who sit underneath the ANZ professional franchise league and I have been given the opportunity to travel around New Zealand playing the game I love,” she said. Training five times a week, working at a full time job and trying to keep in touch with her social life has been a challenge for Teisha. However she stressed she was lucky to have a hugely supportive whānau, flat mates and boyfriend who have kept her going behind the netball scene. “If you’re anywhere near as addicted to netball as I am, you can come and support my Hellers Mainland Netball Team at a couple of our local games, or watch our screening on Sky Sport,” Teisha concluded with a smile.

nineteenth century. Bert Batstone, along with his brothers and sisters, grew up here and the family ran a prosperous business. It employed a number of people from Kirwee and the family owned a number of plots of land. George Batstone (Bert’s brother) donated a section of land to the Council to build a library. Though the land was never used by the Council for this. George Batstone was a cake decorator, and was responsible for the donations of money and the design of the memorial to Colonel Brett. Brett That is reportedly the reason the monument looks like an ornately decorated cake! Two of Bert Batstone's siblings are buried in the Kirwee church yard - Edith Batstone Frizzell and George Batstone. Batstone Three out of the seven sibling descendants came together to remember Bert on this occasion, as well as to place a
down from Auckland. The family will put a small headstone for Bert on his brother’s grave. The memorial and reunion was organised by Alistair Frizzell, Frizzell along with Julie and Rob Batstone. Batstone Bert’s military record: Private Bert Batstone, service number 6/2535, served with the 13th Regiment, in Canterbury and the West Coast before he enlisted for war service on April 9th, 1915. He was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Regiment and embarked on August 14th with the 6th reinforcements bound for Suez. He joined the Battalion at Mudros and on to Gallipoli. However, he was admitted to the Hospital ship Oxfordshire, with influenza on December, 12th. He was then transferred to the General Hospital at Cairo on December, 15th. After convalescence at Luxor he re-joined the battalion and sailed on the Franconia from Port Said to France on April, 6th, 1916. Bert was wounded at Armentieres on July, 27th suffering a gun-shot wound to his neck. He was hospitalised in Boulogne, but re-joined his battalion on July 2nd. The New Zealand Division went into action in the battle for Morval in September 1916. At first Bert was declared missing, but after a board of enquiry, he was declared killed in action, aged 26, on September, 28th 1916. His name is recorded on the ‘Caterpillar Valley Memorial to the missing, in Somme, France.

When South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) kicks off in Kirwee on March 27th, volunteers will play a big part in making the event run smoothly, just as they have in organising it over the past year. SIAFD publicity officer Daniel Schat said a large number of volunteers put in a huge amount of their own time into organising and running the event every two years. “There is a core team and everyone puts in countless hours of unpaid time to put the event together,” he added. “We have an organising committee, plus an executive committee, that oversees spending for larger financial decisions. There are 25 people on the organising committee and some of those people have been there for many years,” Daniel said. Daniel himelf has been involved in organising the past six field days, which he does in between his fulltime job as a dairy farmer, milking 385 cows at Darfield. In addition to SIAFD’s organising and executive committees, a number of local community groups and schools help run various aspects of the Field Days for example, Young Farmers, who do the car parking under the lead of committee members Robin Hornblow and Martin Bates. Bates SIAFD is heavily focussed on servicing the wider community. It gives away two $2,500 scholarships each year to Lincoln University students (this year’s recipients are Amy Wells and Callum Woodhouse) Woodhouse and it has donated $5,000 to help the Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade buy a new vehicle. SIAFD is the oldest and one of the largest agricultural events in the South Island. It provides opportunities to view machines at work on the demonstration paddocks, while reinforcing the relationship between farmers, contractors, service providers, technical experts and the community. “Most of us take time off work during the week of the field

days, Daniel explained. “Some people use annual leave to do it and others rely on the support of employers, staff and their families. It also means time away from family to put the event together,” he said. “I do it because I like seeing a successful event run in the local community. The event wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for all these volunteers.” Daniel says many people who attend SIAFD do not realise the large number of people involved are often giving their time voluntarily. “Being such a big event with more than 600 exhibitors, there will always be logistical challenges, but most exhibitors and members of the public appreciate the fact that the committee members are all volunteers.” During this year’s field days the committee will hold a silent auction to sell the feed produced on the site’s demonstration area. Proceeds
will go to Farmstrong, the initiative that promotes healthy lifestyles for the farming community. SIAFD runs from Wednesday March 27th to Friday March 29th, and preparations are well on track. “The SIAFD Society owns the site now,” Daniel said, “while developing it is a work in progress, we are very pleased with what we have achieved so far,” he said. “In 2017 we had a lot of rain before the event, which made it messy on the opening day. This time we have done work on the laneways and it is all looking quite good. “This year we have had a little bit of rain so the site is looking fairly green. We are now doing final touches and the committee has been busy marking out the site.”

The Rural Building Solutions (RBS) office at 1 Bray Street, Darfield, handily not far from the Bakery, is clearly visible from the Street. For those that don’t know, RBS provides dairy shed design and construction services throughout Canterbury, Otago, Marlborough and the West Coast. They are well known in the Selwyn district for their awardwinning sheds, with director Nigel Hodges adding, “quality is always the focus. With six months of business behind him Darfield based Enzed Hose doctor, Ricki Smith is busier than ever. After a steady start, coming in at the beginning of spring, it soon changed as harvest got into full swing, but isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Ricki is still finding locals every week that have no idea there is a local Mobile Hydraulics expert and the service he offers has been welcomed by farmers and contractors alike, especially since he offers a 24 hour, seven day a week, breakdown service. “We knew starting up out here would be a work in progress, but it just makes sense to use someone local rather than pay f o r tr a v e l co s t s f r o m Christchurch and since Christmas we’ve been busier than ever,” Ricki commented. “We immediately knew it made sense to get along to local
events like the SIAFD and also the Malvern A & P Show to get to know more locals, and let them see how we can save them time and money. We hope folk will look out for us, come and grab a free sausage and have a chat,” added Ricki. “With that in mind as harvest comes to an end, now is the time to look at off-season maintenance to prevent costly downtime later on,” Ricki encouraged. “If people aren’t sure what to look for, feel free to give us a call and we are more than happy to come down and provide an obligation-free, inspection. They are happy to show people what to look out for in the
future and also set up a regular maintenance programme which ultimately means cost saving down the line. Setting up a maintenance programme can assist with anything from cost savings to protection for owners and employees. “There's so much to gain from a solid preventative maintenance programme, on top of reduced repair costs from fewer breakdowns, increased life expectancy of equipment and less downtime,” Ricki ended.

The 2018/19 Darfield Touch season has again seen a good number of teams/participants enjoy a great season of playing touch. There were twenty two mixed competition grade teams pre- Ch ri stm as (wit h a n increased number of teams being high school aged players, plus our first all-girls team for many years). Post-Christmas there were twenty one teams. The second round of the mixed competitio n ende d la st Wednesday, March 13th. A lot of games in the second round have been very close, making for a tight competition. Congratulations to all the teams who played finals, the prize winners, and thank you everyone who played for a great season. A huge thank you also to all the volunteers who have made this season another success - parents, coaches, referees and those on the organising committee. The Seed Bank was created by the Nourish Community Garden group, and the stand for the Bank has been made by the Darfield Menz Shed. The seed bank has a variety of seeds including flowers and vegetables and visitors are welcome to take seeds and also donate any spare ones that they may have. “We think the Seed Bank will be a great community resource and hope it will inspire gardeners. both old and new,” commented a spokesperson.

T hese are th e descendants of the majestic horses who have lived in the Kaimanawa Ranges for over one hundred and forty years. The Kaimanawa Ranges have a unique biodiversity, managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC). The herd is kept at approximately three hundred horses which allows a balance between the environment and the animals. DOC does an annual herd count via helicopter and the surplus horses will be mustered in around April/May this year, dependant on favourable weather conditions, and offered for adoption. Every muster there are mares, stallions, yearlings and foals available for adoption to approved homes. The muster is conducted by DOC with the cooperation of the New Zealand Army. Horses are mustered in with their family groups, usually from specific areas which DOC have decided on, based on the data from the annual herd
which horses are suitable for rehoming and which will be slaughtered. “These horses are wild so can’t be expected to behave like a domesticated animal,” said KHH Canterbury representative and ex-local Katarina Tawiri. Tawiri “However once they have had time to adjust they are loyal, talented, hardy, robust, strong, versatile animals which adapt quickly to their new environments. The qualities bred into these horses reflect their survival instincts in the wild,” Katarina pointed out. “They bring a lot of enjoyment to people in their chosen equestrian disciplines and are highly intelligent,” she added. “Once they know people can be relied upon, they are a loyal family member for life.” Kaimanawa Heritage Horses (KHH) are a charitable society, run by dedicated volunteers, and dedicated to the care and welfare of these horses both domestically and in the wild. There are also other ways people can help the Kaimanawa Horses without adopting them;

The event was part of the ‘Summer in Selwyn’ events and was the last picnic in the park for the ’Summer’ season. The event was well supported by locals and their families. Those that attended were treated to live music from Alex Hardy, Hungerball, Lieutenant Lou the clown police, bouncy castles, garden games and face painting; these were just some of the many activities enjoyed on the day. Saturday, March 9th marked the date of the annual Kirwee Rugby 10's Tournament. Blue sky and hydrated green fields welcomed the eight teams who had entered as they arrived for a 9:45am start. A late spanner in the works when one team showed up with six players did not deter proceedings as other teams kindly offered players for each game. With a combination
of teams from as far away as Banks Peninsula to New Brighton, it was always going to be a battle of town vs country. Two pools of four teams were split, playing on both fields. With the Club barbecue being just as popular as KFC Rolleston, DJ Singh Star set up on the Frew's truck announcing games and results and playing some great music to get everyone in the

mood; it made for a cracker day. All games were played in good spirit and at pace, with players from both teams happy it was only ten minute halves for this time of the season. Aleese from Darfield Physio was once again on hand and available to all teams for knocks and bumps; luckily she was not run off her feet. The home team Kirwee fielded a young, fresh faced, side giving all the new players to the Club a decent run. With further minutes on the paddock this season, the team will mould fairly quickly into a unit chasing higher honours during the Ellesmere competition. As the round robin and semi play ended, Waihora Division 2 and new-comers to the event, Belfast, fought out the final with the black and white of Tai Tapu claiming victory and well deserved. With the day ended and refreshments in full swing, the organisers agreed it had been another well run event and a welcome start to the 2019 season. A massive thanks to the Kirwee Rugby Committee for the planning, Kent Opie for the pre organising, the barbecue brigade Robbie Bell for keeping the punters fed, Rory for the green pitch and all other helpers on the day plus the Thursday/Friday line marking and post erection delegation, well done all.

By Lucinda Jarvis. Thursday, March 14th saw Year 3 and 4 students from around Malvern come together to participate in the Selwyn Sports Trust initiative; ‘Sports Spectacular’. The children moved around sport stations in groups experiencing and enjoying a variety of sport codes and games offered in the Malvern area. It was reported that the day was a huge success with the children taking part loving trying new things and having loads of fun while doing so. Some of the event’s success can be attributed to the Malvern Netball Club, Darfield Rugby Club, Malvern Hockey Association, Malvern Squash Club and the new Selwyn Golf Hub with Pip Deans and Kevin Hughes. Hughes Without the involvement of these Clubs the event wouldn’t have been the outstanding success it was. The Selwyn Sports Trust thanks all the volunteers that assisted for their time and energy; they made the experience a fun and positive one.

Organisation for the 2019 netball season is well underway, with committee and members gearing up for a great season. The courts have not been resting, with five-a-side summer netball fundraiser for Malvern Netball drawing to an end this week. This is a fun, very social, adapted game of netball. The Selwyn Sports Trust's ‘Sports Spectacular’ held last week saw an awesome turn out of year 3 & 4 children from around Malvern. A section of this event was trying the Futureferns year 3 & 4 programme. Much fun was had and some great skills were shown by these students. Darfield Netball are holding their junior registration day on April 1st (seriously), see our advert for the details. This will be followed by our Club day on April 7th, which is a fun event with great socialising for all members of the Club. Saturday games are due to commence on the first Saturday of May, closely followed by the junior year 1 to 4 programme on the second week of term two. On Sunday, March 17th Al Sime was representing the Hororata Golf Club playing for the Central Canterbury Shield at Weedons Golf Course. At the number three tee-off area Al selected his six iron for the first shot on the par three hole, with a distance of 165 metres. He lined up and hit his shot and watched the ball land on the green, in line with the hole. Al decided the ball was
he bent to pick up his tee. As he was doing this, his playing partner said excitedly, “it’s in the hole!”. There were brief celebrations on the green as the news spread through the Course and then to his home Club - very quickly. Al has been playing golf for thirty four years and is an accomplished player on a 5.8 handicap. He frequently represents his home Club and plays a large role in competition organisation at Hororata Golf Club.

Jack decided to go skiing with his buddy, Bob. So they loaded up Jack's minivan and headed north. After driving for a few hours, they got caught in a terrible blizzard. So they pulled into a nearby farm and asked the attractive lady who answered he door if they could spend the night. "I realise it's terrible weather out there and I have this huge house all to myself, but I'm recently widowed," she explained. "I'm afraid the neighbours will talk if I let you stay in my house." "Don't worry," Jack said. "We'll be happy to sleep in the barn. And if the weather breaks, we'll be gone at first light." The lady agreed, and the two men found their way to the barn and settled in for the night. Come morning, the weather had cleared, and they got on their way. They enjoyed a great weekend of skiing. But about nine months later, Jack got an unexpected letter from an attorney. It took him a few minutes to figure it out, but he finally determined that it was from the attorney of that attractive widow he had met on the ski weekend. He dropped in on his friend Bob and asked, "Bob, do you remember that good-looking widow from the farm we stayed at on our ski holiday up north about 9 months ago?" "Yes, I do." said Bob "Did you, er, happen to get up in the middle of the night, go up to the house and pay her a visit?" "Well, um, yes," Bob said, a little embarrassed about being found out "I have to admit that I did." "And did you happen to use my name instead of telling her your name?" Bob's face turned beet red and he said, "Yeah, look, I'm sorry, buddy. I'm afraid I did." "Why do you ask?" "She just passed away and has left me everything!"
