Local, talented, freeride skier Henry Freeman is well and truly living the dream as he travels and competes in Europe gaining some outstanding results on the way.

Henry has been competing in the Junior Freeride World Tour series which kicked off in New Zealand during the 2018 winter season. Henry competed in three stops around New Zealand. The first one at the Remarkables where he came fourth in the U18s, the second stop was local field Mt Olympus where Henry got a second in the U18s, this was followed by the third stop at Turoa in the North Island with a second placing in the U18s.

“This resulted in me being ranked second in the U18 world rankings,” Henry explained.

“With these points and with having finished school and planning on going on a GAP year, I took the chance to pack my bags and head over to Europe, compete on the world stage and represent NZ. With the help of friends and family and sponsors Atomic Skis and Darfield’s Gnomes Alpine Sports I was able to get prepared for the journey,” Henry said gratefully. “I had a couple of weeks in the United states at the start of February, before

heading to Europe and straight to Fiebebrunn in Austria. This is where my first day on skis was comp. day and where I competed in my first stop of the seri es F ieberbr unn 3*.

Unfortunately I didn’t land the run I wanted to, coming in midfield at seventeenth place. After this result I fully realised the level of skiing here and what I need to do to gain a higher result.

“After this I was eager to get on to the next comp. to give it a crack - so it was to the Eldorado Freeride 3* in Andorra, just out of Spain. With a week of skiing in the Spanish Alps with the Spanish Freeride team, I felt ready for this next comp.,” Henry said.

Shave for a Cure is a fundraising initiative that hits close to home for many kiwis. Over the past fifteen years, Kiwis have registered, fundraised, organised Shaves and shorn their locks for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC).

This year, The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery centres in Rolleston and West Melton are getting behind this annual fundraising event, with owner, Tracy Summerfield shaving her hair, along with Kendall Millar from the Rolleston centre.

“My Dad has terminal cancer and a number of staff and families in our community have been affected by cancer. The

LBC is such a fantastic charity that does so much good,” Tracy explained.

LBC is the national charity dedicated to supporting patients and their families living with a blood cancer, or a related blood condition. LBC receives no government funding. With donations, the charity can continue to fund their core services - patient support programmes, research, information, awareness, and advocacy.

After an incredibly successful event last year folk won’t want to miss this year’s Leeston Fete.

This ninth Fete is to be held on March 30th and already over one hundred stalls, from all over New Zealand, have indicated their intention to be there.

Those attending should look out for the dedicated children’s area in Anderson Square and the entertainment in the St David’s and Anglican Church grounds is touted as being top quality. This

With Leeston’s main street closed to traffic, there is the freedom to allow people to meander, admiring the variety of goods on display; free entry and a wide variety of food stalls make the Fete an even more attractive proposition to attend, as well as the fact it’s a great family day out. Stalls carrying everything from garden crafts to knitted socks, as well as

plants to wine and cheese - it can all be found at the Leeston Fete.

“The launch of the ‘Secret Garden’ (this features much sought after items such as plants, outdoor furniture, equipment and ornaments) was such an over whelming success last year that it’s all happening again on March 30th. It will be run in a similar fashion as its inaugural appearance, but with the addition of some new stalls

and entertainment.

“A lot of time and planning goes on behind the scenes to make this a day the local community can enjoy,” explained Kath Mentink, Mentink Chairperson of the Ellesmere Business and Promotions team. “With the Fete’s reputation growing, people from a far wider area are coming to see what all the fuss

is about,” she smiled. “It’s a great time for the area of Ellesmere to shine.

Saturday, March 23rd 2019 marks the 135th year of racing for the Hororata Racing Club, n o w a d a y s p ro m o t e d a s ‘Riccarton Park-Hororata’ and is an event that allows Selwyn to celebrate its thoroughbred racing heritage at the iconic Riccarton Park Racecourse.

The Hororata Racing Club was one of the earliest provincial Clubs to be formed following a meeting of 26 interested people at Hororata in September 1884 who organised a Committee to run a race meeting at Hororata

in early 1885.

Run under the Canterbury Jockey Club (‘C.J.C.’) rules the meeting was an eight race programme for stakes of 135 sovereigns. The inaugural Hororata Cup was won by Mr T Quill's ‘Grand Duke’ and was run for a purse of forty sovereigns.

During the 132 years history of the Club there have only been fifteen presidents.

This ran to Coalgate and brought both horses and patrons, who then walked the few miles to the course, before returning to the ‘young’ city, leaving Coalgate at 5:30pm.

A ‘Ladies Bracelet’ race was run at the very first meeting, and this was revived at the Centennial meeting in 1984.

For that year, and every year since, Petersen’s Jewellers of the Bush Inn Centre have kindly donated a gold bracelet for a race, which is usually for two or three year olds. This year will be the 35th bracelet and is attached to the race for twoyear-olds; there have been thirty-four proud and happy winners! Should the winner be owned by a modern trend of racing syndicates there is intense competition amongst syndicate members as to who gets to wear the bracelet. It is reported!

Hororata raced on its own course for the first eighty years, when because of the requirement for extensive course improvements, plus encouragement from the racing governing body NZ Racing Conference (now NZ Thoroughbred Racing) for centralisation, the Club arranged to rent the Riccarton Racecourse for its future meetings. The first meeting to be held on the new venue was in 1965.

In 1986 on the retirement of the Secretary, discussions were

held and it was decided to operate from the Riccarton headquarters and engage the C.J.C. as the secretariat for the Hororata Club.

The Club is an integral component of ‘Riccarton Park’ and the C.J.C. It continues to be run by an enthusiastic and experienced Committee with a good blend of youth, which has strong links to its ‘home district’ from which it continues to receive solid support as will be evident on race-day again this year.

This year’s Hororata annual race meeting will see nine races for a combined stake money of $282,500 up for competition.

The day’s feature event is the $80,000 Valachi Downs Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes sponsored by Kevin Hickman, a man with a very real and close affinity to the Hororata area.

This race has been upgraded to a Group 3 event making it the most important race in the history of Hororata racing and one of the most prestigious 85 races in the country. A spokesperson for the event commented that racing of a high quality and competitiveness is assured.

“After a day’s postponement, due to gnarly conditions it came to comp. day and the venue was rock solid after freezing the night before! I managed to put in a run that resulted in me getting eighth in the U18s. I was happy with this result, but still wanted to raise the level even more for the next comp.,” he said.

Henry then headed back up to Geneva Switzerland where the third stop of the series kicked off in Nendaz Switzerland - the Nendaz 3*.

“This comp. was important to me as I am currently ranked seventh (out of 89 competitors) in the world at the moment; a podium finish in this comp. could result in my overall ranking being raised, but also a possibly a invite to the Junior World Champs. So far it’s been an amazing trip and I am looking forward to the coming weeks and they have to offer.”

It was reported that this was a fantastic event and the children who attended this had a fabulous time.

As part of P laycentre Awareness Week (March 4th to 10th) Darfield Playcentre children and adults enjoyed a visit to Westmar Senior Care, where it was reported, they delighted the elderly residents with stories, bubbles and baby smiles.

“It was lovely to see the interactions between Westmar residents and some of our youngest babies and children,” said a Darfield Playcentre spokesperson, “as part of the Playcentre's commitment to engaging with the community and 'growing their village' beyond the Centre's gates. We even met some very grown-up folk who had attended Darfield Playcentre when they were little,” they added! “Some of our current Playcentre families have settled here from overseas and have no grandparents nearby, while some of the rest-home residents may also have become isolated from their families. The smiles on their faces were testament to the enjoyment our noisy visit brought to many, and have inspired us to plan future visits more regularly,” they explained.

The Darfield Library also warmly welcomed a group of Playcentre children and adults on Monday, March 4th and delivered a special story time for the visitors. This was followed by a wander through the Darfield Community Gardens, where there were many conversations about what could be seen growing and what fruit and vegetables were liked the best.

With the theme for Playcentre Awareness Week 2019 being, ‘Today’s Children are Tomorrow’s Adults - We are a Village and the Children are our Future’, those on the community garden visit commented that they noticed plenty of future gardeners in the group. Some of the younger children learnt what colour a

tomato should be before it’s welcoming them into their villages this Playcentre picked!

Percussion Duo, ‘Pandemonium’, brought beat and rhythm to new heights in the Darfield High School Hall la st S at urd ay mor ni ng.

Organised by the Malvern School of Music (Inc), the 43 children, teenagers and adults who attended proved that anyone can form a Samba Band and play some funky music, no matter what age or ability.

We played on instruments we had not heard of before: the low bass drum, Surdo (a favourite with the children), Timbau, Caixa, Repinique and Tambourim (very similar to tambourine). Brett from Pandemonium led us in copying rhythms, which was very good for our brains and memory, then got us to layer those rhythms, depending on which instrument we were playing, to

a Samba Groove. His musical partner Roanna was a wonderful help moving between the clusters of instruments to reinforce the rhythmic patterns if any of us got confused! One rhythm was recognised as the opening to the 1970’s group Village People’s song, ‘In the Navy’, and another Brett used was from The Adams Family movie theme. Brett’s next trick was to have everyone line up like a real Samba Band with the big drums at the back and to not only remember our rhythms, but try marching or dancing on the spot as well. He told us these type of bands will usually practice for eight hours solid, often through the night, prior to a big carnival. We can now appreciate how fit those performers must be!

For the ‘Junk Jam’ workshop we swapped instruments, or chose some homemade shakers, wooden sticks, corrugated plastic piping to scrape along with a wooden spoon, or large plastic water bottles to strike

Between them, Brett and Roanna played marimba, cymbals, wooden Pacific Island drums, a North American flute and steel drums from the Caribbean. These steel drums are the most recent of musical instruments developed and hearing them brought back memories for those of us who were around in the Glam Rock era, when several bands, including The Sweet, The Hollies and The Beach Boys used them in hit songs. We finished off by playing some groovy and funky music, with syncopated rhythms for those on the Surdos and several younger performers were encouraged to give their own improvised ‘jamming’ solos, concluding with everyone creating a grand flourish en masse. The Malvern School of Music (Inc) thank everyone who attended; it was great seeing all those smiles! To the Editors: After five years of studying soil science from books and on the internet I have concluded that we have been farming incorrectly in Canterbury.

We have mined the soil of the carbon and the natural fertility; creating a drying, dying soil that is dependent on fertiliser and irrigation.

We all need to learn and practice regenerative farming principles, or face being left behind in the farming game.

Irrigation and Fertiliser are now old-school farming practices that need to be replaced with building soil carbon, understanding soil microbes, growing living roots, using cover crops, time controlled grazing and green leaf solar panels etc.

Farmers all over the world are seeing the benefits of regenerative agriculture and we also need to embrace this new era of caring for our land while farming profitably.

This year’s Malvern A & P Show President Richard Hill has a long rural history in the area. He and wife, Anna have lived in the Malvern district for the last thirty years.

“My first job in Selwyn was manager at Dry Acheron and following that I was self employed as a fencing contractor and livestock scanner,” Richard explained. “We moved around the district living in Glentunnel, Greendale and Sheffield until 1997 when we leased a farm at Homebush. We continued our scanning business as well as farming and lived there for eight years,” he added.

“Then we took on the lease of Flock Hill, moving here in 2005 and remaining there to this day.

“We have four children; Georgie a teacher at Sheffield Primary School; Sarah - in the Farmlands marketing team; Charlotte - at Lincoln University, and Jack who finished school last year and who is currently casual farm working in the Rakaia Gorge and Geraldine,” Richard said.

Richard has been involved with the Malvern A & P Show for the last fifteen years starting as convenor in the poultry section.

“This was a section which I thoroughly enjoyed, I met some great people in an area I had never really had anything much to do with. I then moved to the hunter rounds about ten years ago and also became involved in the entertainment segment of the event,” he said.

“I firmly believe rural shows are a great way for communities to get together. It always amazes me the effort that so many people voluntarily put in to their neighbourhood so that the Show can go on.

“There is an enormous amount

of work that has to be done before an event like this, with each section being responsible for their own preparation. We do have monthly meetings to discuss and monitor progress though. The week leading up to the event there are two main working bees, but really the whole week is taken up with Show preparation. Secretary/ Treasurer Rebecca Stewart has been extremely busy with the schedule, processing entries and social media promotions all necessary for a successful Show. While there is someone in charge of each section it is the job of Show president and vice president to make sure each section has what they need and are supported to get the job done.

“My role as president is really to enjoy the day meeting and greeting as the Show figurehead while ensuring judges, committee members and other dignitaries are appreciated, ack now l ed ge d an d fe e l welcome,” Richard stressed.

“There has been a push this year to get more young people involved with fresh ideas, which has meant, new entertainment, the Brick horse jump, drone racing, army interactive display, DOC display of what is in the area, and the ringside marquee for judges and past presidents. A major feature this year will be a display by the thirty piece New Zealand army band, along with some great exhibits and a high standard of Show entries. As it is the 120th Show we have two supreme awards, one produce and one livestock. These will be presented by Selwyn MP Amy Adams and Tim Black, Black NZ Agricultural Show President.”

The Sheffield Show is an excellent example of our community working together to produce a great day out for everyone in the Malvern District to compete, display their stock and produce and to meet and mingle.

Your elected Malvern Community Board members will be at the Show to meet you, and information about our Malvern communities will be available at the Board display.

We invite you to come and talk to us and share your community succ e s s es a n d w i sh e s.

Communities provide a familiar, safe and respected local environment for their residents.

The Community Board is here to provide information on Malvern projects and to liaise between you, your community and the Selwyn District Council and to help resolve any issues.

The Board meets monthly on the last Monday of the month, usually in the Darfield Library and Service Centre. Over the next few months, the Board will also meet in Hororata and Glentunnel.

This year will be the 120th year that the Malvern A & P Show has been held, which is a very clear indication of the significant role that the farming of animals and growth of crops has played and continues to play in our region’s development. However, rather than looking back to history, the theme of this year’s show is very much to appreciate

the present by reflecting on “What’s Great about Malvern”!

This is a wonderfully positive theme. For me personally many things spring to mind when I consider what is great about Malvern, but foremost amongst these are the fantastic people who live and work in Malvern and the beautiful landscapes of the Malvern area.

It takes a huge amount of commitment to run an A & P Show every year and I would like to acknowledge this year’s President of the Malvern A & P Association, Richard Hill, Hill and Secretary/Treasurer Rebecca Stewart, Stewart as well as their team of volunteers, for putting in the effort they have to make this year’s Show the success I am sure it will be.

Everyone who is participating in the Show, whether it be as a competitor, an exhibitor or an entertainer, is also contributing to the success of the day and should therefore feel rightly proud of their efforts.

This year I have been asked to judge the “Supreme Champion Produce Exhibit” so I will have the challenging task of comparing exhibits in the varying categories from potatoes to preserves, to pick an overall winner!

I am hoping for a beautifully settled autumn day at the Sheffield Showgrounds on

to attend any Board meeting to discuss their local issues and requests.

Come and learn about the role of Community Board members, as it is election year and the role as an elected member on the Community Board might be something you would like to learn more about.

The Malvern Show is a great day out for the whole family.

Whether it’s to watch the horses, check out the bulls, buy some socks, or take a ride at the carnival, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.

Some of my favourite things last year were the giant veges and baby alpacas.

This year has seen continued evolution in Sheffield and the surrounding farmland with the second season of the Central

Plains storage pond and reticulation network. This has big outcomes for families and also for our wider economy. Our Selwyn population is 60,000 people, the largest population in the South Island after Christchurch and Dunedin. The Show provides an opportunity for new residents in Selwyn to get out and enjoy our rural heritage. It is also a chance for long standing families to get together with neighbours and

friends to talk about the changes and also to remember that while some things evolve, many things remain the same.

The Gap still sits on the Torlesse Range, the Waimakariri River still winds its way to the north, the Sheffield Bakery is still making great pies.

From Council’s perspective, I would like to acknowledge Val Mackenzie and the Sheffield Township/Hall committee for their perseverance as we move closer to strengthening the Hall; those who have enjoyed swimming safely in the Sheffield Pool over the summer; Nick Pratt and the staff at Sheffield School for the way you love and teach our young people; and Richard Hill, Hill President of the Malvern A & P Association, for your commitment to the area and leading a committee to provide a wonderful Show for our community.

“As this is the Malvern A & P’s 120th Show the committee have organised to include some of the ‘Vintage’ classes from yesteryear in the cooking and photography sections.

Being the 120th commemorative Show, winners of Supreme awards will be judged for the ‘Supreme Livestock Exhibit’ (this will be judged from Supreme Champion Horse, Supreme Champion Pony, Supreme Champion Cattle Beast, Supreme Champion Alpaca, Champion of Champion Wool and Meat breed sheep, and Champion Bird). The winner will receive a commemorative medal and sash.

“This is also the case in the indoor section. Premier exhibits will be judged for ‘Supreme Champion Indoor Exhibit’.”

Last year was definitely baptism by fire for Kara Taogaga when she joined the Malvern A & P Association Show committee and took on multiple roles. This year sees her again wearing the hats of the Photography, Pet Section and Dog Show, as well as helping her partner, Brendon Topp, Topp with the ever-growing vegetable section.

“This year to commemorate 120 years of the Show’s existence, the photography section has included a class from days gone by entitled ‘Candid Camera’,” Kara explained. “This has been brought in as an Open Entry cla ss and anyon e ca n participate. It’s nice to add something from the past and for myself I am really interested to see how people interpret this section,” Kara said Karen Casey a professional photographer will judge this section again for the Show. Last year she received much positive feedback from photographers and viewers alike for the addition of judge’s comments on photos that placed in the top three, and sometimes up to the first six places.

“I introduced this,” Karen commented, “as I would look at photos and think, wow that’s

Brendon Topp is passionate about growing and has been keen on growing giant pumpkins. As the convenor for the vegetable section he thought this was definitely a great opportunity for anyone to ‘give it a go’.

Some of the seeds that have been available to purchase came from pumpkins that were grown in the North Island and that had reached an astounding weight of over 600 kilograms!

“It would be great to see if this could be achieved in the Malvern area,” Brendon smiled.

amazing and it deserved to win, but why did it not? So I thought it would help photographers and let viewers know what the judge thought was great about a photo that was placed above other entries.”

Kara enthused.

Historically the dog competitions are always a huge crowd pleaser and draw spectators from throughout the grounds it’s hoped this new addition will do the same.

Also new this year is the Dog Agility Course. “I love to see the horses galloping around their courses and thought how great that would be for dogs and their owners to give something similar a try,” Kara smiled, “and to do so i n a ve ry r e la xed environment. Dogs and owners can be as competitive as they want (or not want) it’s all about having lots of fun and enjoying a great day at the Malvern Show,”

“With so much on offer for pets and their proud owners we are hoping to see lots of lambs, goats, ewes and dogs on Show day. If owners haven’t entered already, there is the opportunity to enter on the day. We do ask that any dogs that will be present on the day are treated prior to Show day to avoid the spread of sheep measles,” Kara concluded.

One of the highlights of the day in the pet and dog section is the best-dressed pet and best-dressed dog. This event will occur at the end of the ‘best of’ part of the day. There will be a short time period to dress up the entered pet and return for judging.

opportunity to enter ‘The Giant School Competition’ where the winning school will receive a shield for the year. Last year Brendon and family members delivered seeds, as well as germinated seedlings, to schools that were keen to compete.

“We can’t wait to see how the schools, and members of the community, are getting on and will have to wait to see who wins on the day - the heaviest pumpkin will be the winner,” he added.

The crazy vegetable race is also a new section introduced by Brendon last year and he is hoping for many more entries this year. As well as seeing who can produce the fastest vegetable there is the ‘Best Decorated’ section which is judged prior to racing.

“We are hoping to see lots of imagination with design and a creative way of adding wheels,” Brendon concluded.

Brendon Topp hopes there’ll be some innovative creations in the Crazy Vegetable Race AND some huge being at this Malvern A & P Show.

The 120th Malvern A & P Show has a jam packed entertainment line-up on offer. The New Zealand Army Band being one of the key features with their New Orleans style group roaming the grounds and full Band Mini Concerts throughout the day. Over at the Fun Zone Holly Kimber and the Sheffield School Kapa Haka group will be performing just before lunch.

The Main Ring activities begin at 12pm with the popular Three Bar Event named after the sponsors - Flock Hill Lodge, Sheffield Hotel and Coalgate Tavern with a $300 prize up for grabs.

The very popular ‘Rev n Ride’ off competition shows the competitors talents of skill, speed and judgement to win $350 sponsored by Bassett Agricultural Ltd. This year also sees a brand new event in the horse section - W A

Boyes sponsored ‘Brick Wall,’ a daunting new challenge which sees which ever competitor can jump the highest without knocking down a brick from the wall, the winner wins $500.

The Curle Contracting Digger Challenge will test people’s dexterity.

Close by the New Zealand Army will put on an interactive display.

Spend a while watching the Mechanical Puppets, while ‘Pedalmania’ and the Sideshows will keep the children busy.

Woodchoppers will be testing their skill, Adam Allsorts will be around to add to the fun and Chris Singh DJ extraordinaire will again be pivotal to keep all the stage events humming.

There will be the traditional highlights of the Lolly Scramble and Dog race, fun for young and old. This will be followed by the Ellesmere Pipe Band leading the Grand Parade. Then head

back to the Fun Zone for more music before the Speedshear kicks off with a relay against the Axemen. Grab a cold drink, relax and enjoy the Show.

Sylvia Townshend’s role as convenor of the flower section at the Malvern A & P Show is to oversee everything, make sure things run smoothly, and to time. The section attracts a number of repeat entries in the dahlia and cut flower classes, and naturally the number of entries relies on the type of weather during the month preceding. “Roses, in particular, do not like very, wet weather,” Sylvia explained.

Sylvia lives in Springfield and has belonged to the Sheffield Garden Club for over twenty years and through them has also been involved in helping at the Show. “I became a Garden Club Committee member in 2008 and took over the secretary-ship in 2012,” Sylvia said.

“Sheffield Garden Club will provide a morning tea for the shed while the staging and judging etc takes place.” she added.

To celebrate the Malvern A & P

Association's 120th show some classes in the decorative section from previous year's schedules have also been included in the 2019 schedule.

“We have a lot of helpers on the day made up of all the Garden Club committee, along with some of the Club members. It would be impossible to hold it without this help,” Sylvia said.

Following Show day, and prior to it, there is a lot of paperwork and preparation.

“I do the advance preparation,” Sylvia said, “and we have one day beforehand where tables are set up ready for the displays, but most of the hard work is on the day itself. It’s a long day especially when I try to enter the decorative and rose sections as well,” she laughed!

“While I feel that the A & P show is great for the wider community I’m not too sure about the fate of the flower section. Children’s entries have declined dramatically over the years,” Sylvia said sadly. “We have held

classes in local schools, but unfortunately they haven’t resulted in more entries.

Entries for children are free and each child now gets a small gift, so we sincerely hope this will encourage a few more to participate.

“We would also very much love to see more entries in the decorative sections,” Sylvia commented, “it’s amazing how clever some people are and it is a great hit with spectators.”

Ann Forbes and Catherine Wright have been supporting the Malvern Show for many years by entering indoor produce and homecraft items, or demonstrating spinning in the wool shed.

As members of the Malvern Spinners and Weavers they were recently approached by the Show committee to convene the homecraft section for the first time. As it is the first year they have been in this role they are ably supported by the rest of the committee in learning the ropes. This Show they have decided to keep all the traditional sections with the aim

of reviewing the Homecraft section next year.

“Watch this space,” Ann commented, “and if anyone has suggestions about what could be included please comment on the Show’s Facebook page.

Both Ann and Catherine will be busy in the Shed this year, but other members of the Malvern Spinners and Weavers group will be demonstrating spinning in the Wool Shed.

In the week running up to the Show the pair will be part of a team setting up the grounds, marquees and clearing out the sheds, while on the day they make sure the entries are in the correct place in each section and help the judge with whatever is needed. The recording of points for each competitor to work out who receives trophies etc and the writing out of prize money cards and certificates to be handed to the winners on the day are also important tasks. From there they need to work out from the points who receives the Lions’ Trophy for the Supreme

Exhibitor before tidying up the entries and handing them back to the exhibitors.

Both Ann and Catherine are excited to be part of the Show and to have the opportunity to assist with showcasing the talents of the local area - by entrants both young and old.

As one of the convenors of the Donkey class Melissa Jebson is understandably rather excited to have attracted a world class American judge to undertake the task of judging the donkey section.

“Sandy Sandy Croote from Esperance, New York, USA is in New Zealand to judge the National Miniature Horse Show in the North Island and wanted to experience a traditional New Zealand rural country Show,” Melissa explained. “I have also canvassed the local Donkey Association and they have got in behind me and are supporting the Show.”

This has resulted in a record

number of entries - 22; and both Melissa and fellow convenor Mel Cleland are thrilled with this level of interest.

“One breeder has donated a garland for the Champion Donkey and entrants hailing from throughout Canterbury will compete for it,” Melissa said.

“The Donkey ring will be situated in the Main Ring, near the Pavilion and alongside where the Cattle used to be, before they moved on to the old Bowling Green site,” she added.

Melissa will host the international judge while she is here and is looking forward to making her acquaintance.

know it’s at the end of the miniature horse show season but having the chance to stay over/come in early and judge an extra show is such a wonderful opportunity to see more of New Zealand's outstanding animals! I just finished judging a donkey/mule and mini donkey show in Wisconsin and it was really well turned out,” she ended.

This will be the second appearance at the Malvern A & P Show by Louise (Lou) Hardham and her distinctive orange Meccanno Coffee caravan.

“Last year was the first ever coffee event for my new business, and a bit of a baptism of fire as I was asked right at the last minute to fill in,” laughed Lou. “However twelve months under my belt now and I’m looking forward to this year’s Show.

“I don’t have too far to travel to get there and I plan to be all set-up and ready to go by 8am. I guess I’m lucky that rain or shine coffee lovers drink coffee in all weathers!”

Lou admits to loving interacting with people and finds that her coffee cart is the perfect way to do this.

“The events I go to are quite varied and different so I get to meet and a have quick chat with lots of interesting people,” Lou commented. “I try to have a quick run around the Show before I start, and check out what to have for lunch,” she smiled!

Lou finds shows such as this, very beneficial to her business and she also will attend the forthcoming Field Days, along with farm auctions, clearing sales and a variety of local community events.

She uses coffee roasted in Canterbury ensuring a readily obtainable, and very fresh, supply. Lou designed her unique Meccanno Coffee cart and had it custom produced overseas then shipped into Darfield to begin her business. It’s bright colour and distinctive shape make it easy to find in all locations.

Lou has lived in Darfield for almost seven years and when she’s not dispensing coffee from her Meccanno cart she’s the part-time administrator at Darfield Preschool and Nursery.

“I’ve also been the coordinator for the Breast Cancer Street appeal for the last four years, often standing outside the Bakery in all weathers, with my wonderful volunteers,” she concluded.

New local business Water Boyes will set-up and be on-hand at the Malvern A & P Show to meet and greet and explain what they do. While it’s the first appearance at the Show for the one year old business, co-owner Matt Glidden has been a regular attender of the event for some time, and now living near Sheffield, this is likely to continue. Matt as a part owner of this bus ine ss, also undertakes the day to day running of WA Boyes Contracting Ltd as Operations Manager. Matt and his wife Lydia along with their new baby

girl (Hazel Hazel) Hazel are enjoying being Sheffield residents, while spending much of their spare time. chasing their two famous beagles around the district!

“Being local, we want to meet local people and explain just what we do and what we have to offer,” Matt said. “We’re looking forward to meeting show-goers and as there’ll be two of us on the stand we also hope to get a good chance of seeing the whole event during the course of the day.”

Water Boyes will bring their service vehicle to the Show for display along with Barry Allnutt who mans it. Matt and Barry will be able to meet locals and discuss the businesses services.

“Our business deals primarily with irrigation mainline and stock water repairs, as well as undertaking all aspects of farm water needs,” Matt explained.

“Barry, who is the hub of Water Boyes, travels from Christchurch daily and has a huge amount of knowledge in this area.

“Barry previously worked four years for WA Boyes Contracting before returning when we started this business. Things are going in leaps and bounds now, but Barry, who is married with three daughters (one recently married) still manages to fit some fishing and helping mates out at weekends, between Water Boyes duties,” Matt finished.

The ‘brick’ wall, one horse jump, will start at a height of 70 centimetres. Every pony and horse entered in the competition will jump the wall; knock a brick off and they are eliminated!

Once all competitors have jumped, those that haven’t been eliminated go on to the next round, where the jump is made higher and so on. It’s a $10 entry fee on the day and the last horse/pony to go clear will win $500!

The love of horses runs in Sophie’s family with her grandma, Judith and Judith’s sister, Barbara Blackie both being very horsey. Barbara’s daughter Angela plus her grand daughter Melissa have also ridden and been involved with horses for many years.

Sophie’s granny was an accomplished rider and Barbara is still working with her racehorses at age ninety nine, she will be one hundred this year.

Sophie rode and competed for many years, ending up at View Hill Pony Club doing a bit of everything equestrian.

Photography has been a passion of Sophie’s from a young age, but unfortunately her family couldn’t afford for her to study it at school. But that didn’t stop Sophie following her passion. After having a family,

working in other fields and owning a business, where she was a fully qualified nail technician, Sophie’s equestrian love flared up and she decided she needed to be around horses again. Sophie absolutely loves her job and is blown away with all the incredible people she gets to meet because of it.

Sophie has a daughter, Ava who is pony mad as well. “She will struggle to get up for school on a Monday but she will be the first ready if we’re heading to an event!,” laughed Sophie.

A normal day at a show/event sees Sophie arrive early so she can have a look around and get her bearings, plus have a few quick chats with people before everything starts. Then she just clicks away all day capturing those all important shots. “I feel very lucky that Ava is able to come with me to events/shows while I’m working, everyone keeps an eye on her - the saying ‘it takes a village,’ comes

to mind, they’re my wonderful village,” remarked Sophie.

Once she gets home, often after a long day in all weathers, she regularly is required to search through a few hundred photos to find a few for organisers/ websites that need to go up that night.

Sophie is looking forward to capturing those special shots at Malvern A & P and wishes all exhibitors the best of luck.

By Lucinda Jarvis. a team and managed to secure competition focussed on five Two Darfield High School boys Tom Welch and Ben Millar, Millar both seventeen years old, competed in the FMG Junior Young Farmer competition which was held at Amu r i S howg ro un ds on Saturday, March 2nd. A large group of high school students from across the Tasman region worked in pairs to tackle a raft of challenges. The modules tested the students’ practical and theoretical skills and included a quiz hosted by comedian Te Radar.

Radar It was reported that the students in this competition were operating at a very high level.

The boys competed very well as

This is not the first time Tom has taken a leading role in this competition. In 2017 he and fellow Darfield student Brooke McKay won the TeenAg Team Award at the regional finals. The FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year competition was formerly known as TeenAg. Dunsandel Young Farmers also had success at the Young Farmer competition with Jonny Brown placing second overall and was named the most techsavvy contestant. He also picked up the prize for outstanding leadership. This

Johnny who is twenty eight, is an assistant manager on a 1000 cow dairy farm in Rakaia. He grew up in the Eastern Bay of Plenty on a large family enterprise, featuring dairy and kiwifruit. Jonny attended Hamilton High School in his youth. He came down to Canterbury ten years ago to attend Lincoln University and has never left. He has worked and managed farms in the local area since he graduated apart from a year stint he did as a contract milker in Culverden.

Harrison “It was a fun weekend, starting with an exam on the Friday night. Saturday was the technical day and head to head challenges; ten modules featuring, irrigation, tractor with gps, worksafe, cooking, fertilisers, vet module and welding a sprinkler from scratch.

These were interspersed with two head to head challenges featuring woodworking the FMG logo into a log of wood, guiding someone blindfolded around a course, plumbing in the sprinkler into a live mainline.

Following this was the evening quiz with a mix of agricultural and gener al knowledge questions,” commented Jonny.

“I am hoping to be back in the future to have another crack at it,” concluded Jonny.

Alex Knowles also a member of the Dunsandel Young Farmers placed third in this competition and won the award for championing environmental best practice. Alex is twenty six years old and is an Agri Manager at Ravensdown.

Students from numerous Malvern Schools (Kirwee, Glentunnel and Hororata) joined together at the Coalgate Bowling Club for a mini tournament on Wednesday, February 27th. About eighty children attended this exciting day. They learnt a wide range of techniques and most importantly how to play bowls. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to get a taste of the sport ‘bowling’. The day was arranged by Jayde Mayberry through the Selwyn Sports Trust. Coalgate Bowling Club welcomes new members.

Junior Year 6 - 8 teams had six teams in their competition with the same rules as the Year 4 - 6 division. The Year 6 - 8 final was extremely exciting with the score being tied at full time. Into extra time these two teams went, both teams gave it their
