The birthday present is delivered. The popular Washpen Falls will have another feature to add to its attractions when Tom the War Horse is placed on permanent display on a prominent section of the walkway. A chance for all to pause and reflect on the brave men who became the Mounted Rifles and the horses who were their constant companions. ‘We will remember them’, it was a poignant and memorable day for everyone present.

Under grey skies, fitting for a wartime memorial, a crowd of fifty invited guests assembled for a very special celebration of Purple Poppy Day; February 24th, at Washpen Falls, Windwhistle. In 2018 this day was officially inaugurated to be set aside to recognise the role animals played in warfare. The ceremony led by the Reverend Jenni Carter, Carter was for the dedication of ‘Tom the War Horse’ and the creation of a permanent memorial to Thomas Hartnell Stone, Stone a member of the New Zealand.
