Under grey skies, fitting for a wartime memorial, a crowd of fifty invited guests assembled for a very special celebration of Purple Poppy Day; February 24th, at Washpen Falls, Windwhistle. In 2018 this day was officially inaugurated to be set aside to recognise the role animals played in warfare. The youngest generation weren’t forgotten either. Tom the War Horse was unveiled by Tom Stone’s excited great great grandchildren, Harriet McElrea and Lottie and George Church. Church In her address to the gathered crowd Lindy recounted the story of Tom Stone’s war time experiences. “My grandfather Tom Stone became the owner of this farm in 1913 but then had to leave it to join the New Zealand Mounted Rifles in Palestine during WW1. Miraculously he survived but his brother Edward did not. At the end of the war he volunteered to stay guarding the garrison at Gallipoli in shocking conditions
where he contracted TB. The ANZACS had noted the horrific abject cruelty submitted to the horses the British had sold to the locals and refused to allow this to happen to their animals. Therefore, when a troopship finally arrived to take him home, my grandfather not only had to shoot his faithful companion who had sailed with him from New Zealand but also all the regiment's remaining horses.”
Tom Stone’s descendants, the McElrea family, still live on Tom’s farm at Washpen Falls. The ceremony was the vision of England based, Lindy Drury, Drury seeking a novel birthday present for her brother Tom (McElrea). (McElrea Lindy said, “When I saw the silhouette of Arthur the War Horse at The Plough in Little London, I felt a similar memorial would be a fitting present for Tom's 70th birthday in memory of our grandfather, Thomas Stone”. Lindy’s passion for the project was obvious. Her enthusiasm attracted the attention of the New Zealand Defence Force who volunteered to lay a wreath. To the delight of the assembled friends and family, the New Zealand Mounted Rifles also agreed to participate in the

For the sixth time, sixty teams will drive their Minis from Kaitaia to Invercargill, a total of 2606 kilometres, in the Pork Pie Run raising funds for charity KidsCan. After six days and seven nights only the best prepared, the fittest, the strongest, the desperate, cunning and most courageous will arrive in Invercargill, it has been reported. The event which takes place at Easter (April 19th - 24th) will see participants depart in the Canterbury area from Christchurch on Monday, April 22nd en-route for the Coast via Arthur’s or Lewis Passes to Greymouth/Hokitika/Harihari before arriving at Franz Josef. Amongst those crazy enough to be crammed into a Mini and driving the length of the country are ex-local Sandy Williams and team Beef and Brick (ex-local John Elstob and Darfield’s Wayne Boyes). Boyes Sandy’s team of mother and daughter (Sandra and Sam) Sam are the G & T Girls and they’ll be taking their Mini - named Gordon - through its paces as they travel the length of New
Zealand. One of their sponsors is local business Hawkins River whose name will remain on the car for six months when Gordon returns to Christchurch commuter duties. Team Brick and Beef’s mini is currently in Hamilton but the News has been assured that when it heads southwards on the Pork Pie Run, it will come through Darfield and hand out some promo information along with a few lollies for those watching and waiting. In honour of their nicknames the pair have had the Mini decorated with 25 Bricks on one side and 25 Steaks on the other. Anyone donating $250 or more can get their name/ business in either a steak or a brick! The Pork Pie Run has its roots in the 1981 movie ‘Goodbye Pork Pie’ when, using a stolen driver’s licence, a Kaitaia local hires a Mini to go in pursuit of his wife who’s moved to Invercargill without him. Naming the little Mini ‘Pork Pie’ he hits the road at speed with the Police understandably taking a dim view of his exploits and

making it their mission to thwart him from reaching his destination. The charity Pork Pie Run will raise funds for KidsCan which aims to help the 290,000 New Zealand children who live in poverty. KidsCan provides Kiwi kids in need with food, clothing and health items at school, so they can get into the classroom in a position to learn. KidsCan does this because they believe that education equals opportunity, and all children, regardless of their social economic background should have an equal chance.

Local singer, musician, and dance teacher Saba Polderman -Charles makes up one fifth of the incredibly talented band Horizone (check them out on Spotify and itunes). The News asked Saba some questions about her involvement in this up and coming group that certainly have the right sound to see it heading to the top. Her answers are below: News: Saba could we have an introduction to band members and an introduction to you specifically; you have many strings to your bow, how do you fit everything in? Saba: There are five members to the band. Josh Burke is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist and basically writes the lyrics to all our originals! Tyler Robbins is the drummer, however he can play any instrument he tries. Matt Kennedy is our lead guitarist. We call him Matisse so as not to confuse him with our bassist Matt Coleman who is also a great guitarist! I (Saba) play keys and synth with a bit of background vocals here and there. In regards to the many strings in my bow! I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue dance and piano from an early an age and to be able to do both as a career! I’m currently a dance teacher by day and a pianist by night; I love how well it fits
together. I’ve been studying piano for fifteen years, so it is very much a part of me. News: What is the Band’s music genre? Saba: We play a fusion of reggae, funk and dub. News: How did you all get together? Saba: We all (bar Matt Coleman) met at Vision College in 2015 where we were studying a Bachelor in Music. They discontinued the course after our first year, but we all ended up continuing study elsewhere. Matisse and Tyler joined the band Josh had started with Matt and they had done the odd gig before getting me on board. News: Where have you appeared already and where are any forthcoming gigs? Saba: We recently went on tour to promote our new releases (these can be found on Spotify and iTunes) and we played at The Mussel Inn in Onekaka, the Cabana in Napier, Meow in Wellington and Nivara Lounge
in Hamilton to name but a few. We opened for ‘Sons of Zion’ last year at the Foundry which was an awesome experience. We are playing for the Noodle Markets in Wellington in April, have a gig lined up at Dux Central this month and at the Wunderbar in Lyttelton in April. News: What are the hopes/ plans for the Band’s future? Saba: We are working on a new EP/album release and have a new music video in the works. We love what we do and love any opportunity to do it! News: How did the Band’s name come about? Saba: Funny story, the original name was Horizon and we found there were just too many other bands, or companies for that matter, that were called horizon making it hard for people to find us on the web. So after a year, many band meetings, and 105 names later, we settled on Horizone with an ‘e’. The emphasis is on the ‘zone’.
By Lucinda Jarvis. The 2019 Ashburton Duathlon will now change to the Canterbury Duathlon Series which will be held at Brookside Park in Rolleston as part of the Canterbury Duathlon Series. This longstanding Duathlon Series will be held in a three race series this year and will cater for everyone from beginners to elite athletes. The three races will be held in June and July this year. There will be a short course which will include a 2.5km run/walk, 14km bike and a 1.25km run/walk to finish. The long course will include a 5km run, 28km bike and a 2.5km run. Many folk have, in the past, been involved in School productions and really enjoyed them. They loved the acting, loved the singing and loved the whole experience - there’s an opportunity now, locally, to relive that feeling! Or perhaps just ‘thinking’ about ’acting on stage’ is more descriptive and auditions are definitely intimidating, but perhaps just a small nudge is all that’s needed to make a decision and follow it through. Local theatre group Kirwee Players are about to begin
auditioning for their forthcoming production ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and would welcome anyone keen to join them, make friends for life and no doubt pleasantly surprise themselves in the process. “There is plenty of chorus work for both males and females,” said Mabel Knight on behalf of the Players, “and chorus involvement is a great way to learn and develop your singing and acting talents. You soon feel part of the team and will thoroughly enjoy this very special, personal, experience as

While they know not who nominated them the Hororata Community Trust are honoured to have been recognised in the recent New Zealander of the Year Awards with a Certificate of Achievement in the Mitre 10 New Zealand Community of the Year section. “This is recognition for many people’s hard work and commitment to bettering our community,” said a spokesperson for the Trust. “The certificate will be displayed at Trust events, along with the Selwyn Award trophy. One day when we have a new Hororata Community Centre we will display things like this there,” they added. The successful winner of this category was ‘Pillars’ a charity dedicated to supporting children of prisoners. It provides support, resources, education and opportunities to ensure these children do not become future prison inmates. The Community of the Year Awards provides an opportunity for regional, or national, community groups and organisations to be recognised for their achievements and contribution to their communities. These groups share a strong sense of community spirit and play a vital role in enhancing the social, economic, cultural or environmental prosperity of their region. It is important to recognise and encourage these groups as their efforts make communities stronger and more vibrant and promote true community spirit for this and generations to come. “As Kiwis we’re proud of what
makes New Zealand New Zealand, and believe the spirit found in the community is core to that. Communities help make us great and many groups are making massive efforts to build

The Malvern Community Board held its first on-the-road meeting of 2019 on Monday, February 25th in the Castle Hill Community Centre. The meeting was well attended by members of the Arthur’s Pass, Castle Hill and Springfield communities. Shortly before the meeting the Board, Council staff and community committee members walked around Castle Hill Village to look at some of the issues they wanted to raise. General Board business included reports from the Chair and members and the Board discussed holding its Community Services’ Award Event in August 2019. The Board decided to add a category, being young people under twenty who have participated actively in their communities. During the public forum section of the meeting, residents had the opportunity to raise a number of matters with the Board and staff, including chlorination; Arthur’s Pass Town planning; Castle Hill refuse; and management of gorse and broom in Castle Hill. Issues raised, and which staff will still respond to, include replacement of street lighting; swale clearance; development of a Castle Hill Memorial site; and additional green waste facilities. By Lucinda Jarvis. The Open Day at West Melton Rural Fire Brigade was well attended by several hundred locals, despite the weather being not so great. It was reported that comments on the new station were very favourable, with a few people signing up to the Brigade’s waiting list. They cooked and gave away over 250 free sausages at the sausage sizzle and children loved, sitting in the fire trucks, the giveaways and the inflatable escape house provided by FENZ for the day. The whole day provided a good excuse for families to get out of the house for awhile on what was a pretty yucky day weather wise. Above the new West Melton Rural Fire Brigade building which saw many locals through it on Sunday, February 24th.

March 3rd. The event saw a few thousand turn out to enjoy three hours of fun amidst an abundance of free attractions and entertainment. The event commenced with a beautiful Karakia by David Norgate aka ‘Chook’ from the Rolleston Warriors Rugby League, which set the tone for an event that oozed happiness from the beginning. The double decker short bus rides around Rolleston became an instant hit with children keen to get a top seat view
and enjoy the 1980 vintage ride. Also new to the event this year was the very popular soft archery which provided non stop fun for all ages, as parents guided their younger ones with accurate aims towards giant soft targets, and a few very willing human targets too! Young budding gymnasts were invited to ‘have a go’ on the bright, colourful and fun apparatus circuit brilliantly set up and coached by the team from Affinity Gymnastics Academy. Free drama workshops from the team at Centre Stage Rolleston were also a hit with many taking an interest in the forthcoming Peter Pan auditions coming to the region. Stage entertainment ensured relaxing viewing for many starting with the beautifully presented Jacqueline Jones School of Dance showcasing their Highland Dancing. The Star Jam performers who followed didn’t disappoint either, displaying their warm and enthusiastic performance that they had clearly practiced so very hard for.

Thousands of Kiwis around the country are sporting much safer lifejackets thanks to a Coastguard water safety campaign. The annual Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade campaign wrapped up recently which saw 3,462 old, damaged or obsolete lifejackets traded in over the peak summer holiday period for discounted modern fit-for-purpose Hutchwilco lifejackets. There were almost 500 more lifejackets traded in this summer compared to last year’s campaign. The campaign van was on the road for nine weeks and stopped at 61 different locations around the country. Families brought their old lifejackets to the van and purchased new lifejackets at discounted prices. As well as selling lifejackets, the Old4New crew distributed 1,603 safety items, such as crotch straps, which prevents a lifejacket from slipping up over your head when in water, and provided advice on best boating practice and safety tips. Old4New spokesperson, Sue Tucker, Tucker said the van has become a hub for people wanting to find out more about water safety. “The van attracts a lot of attention and excitement, which is great to see,” she said. “We feel people are starting to realise just how important wearing a lifejacket is. It greatly increases your chances of survival if you do end up in the water.” Many of the lifejackets handed in were unusable and downright dangerous, and every year there is always one that should be in a museum. This year it was an oilskin lifejacket surrendered in Greymouth, which was approximately 75

Coastguard New Zealand CEO Patrick Holmes said the campaign has grown in popularity since starting five years ago. “It has been heartening to see the warm welcome the van receives in places and the increasing number of families stopping by to get new lifejackets fitted,” Patrick said. “The van not only makes it easy for people to upgrade old lifejackets, but also to find out more about how to stay safe on the water.” Patrick added that the younger generation can influence behaviour change when it comes to lifejackets. “Often you see all the young people on a boat wearing lifejackets, but not the parents,” he said. “But everyone on board needs to wear one and
kids often pester older family members to put one on. A lifejacket never ruins a day on the water. “People also learn about lifejacket use and care when they visit the van,” Patrick added. "Lifejackets that are over ten years old should be replaced even if they look okay to the eye. Seawater, sun and general wear and tear impact on their effectiveness and many old lifejackets won't even float, which is a serious concern in an emergency,” he said. Since the campaign started five years ago, over 10,000 old lifejackets have been traded in and taken out of circulation. “This means thousands of Kiwis are now safer out on the water. We are incredibly proud of the difference this campaign is making in our communities,” Patrick said.
