Not content with conquering a one hundred mile run in 2018 Darfield’s Mark Beattie has just done it again. This time though he knocked over two hours off his previous time in the eleventh Tarawera Ultra Marathon. The event began on February 9th, with running taking place at various locations including Hotwater Beach, Kawerau and Government Gardens in Rotorua and is part of the Ultra -Trail World Tour.

conditions were almost perfect for the event.

“My day started at 4 am in Rotorua,” Mark reported. “The day brought with it, perfect weather, and great scenery as we ran around nine different lakes, on trails, in the Rotorua area. During the day and night I had much encouragement from my great support crew - which consisted of my wife Lauren, and her parents. I was also appreciative of the pacer assistance from Tom Igusa, a friend from Auckland, who ran 40 kms with me throughout the night,” Mark added. ”I was pretty happy with my performance all up, especially managing two hours off last year's time .”

Mark finished in 29th position overall out of 97 competitors and tenth in his section for the male 30-39 age group.

“We’re extremely proud of him,” said Mark’s wife Lauren.

and sealed roads. There are forests, lakes, geothermal features, a boat-based lake crossing and the city of Rotorua for the runners to navigate throughout the event.

This year saw a few big changes with a couple of events no longer being run and the

introduction of a 50 km distance. This spectacular course runs through places of cultural significance to local Māori and attracts around 2000 participants with more than 800 international athletes attending to take part.

The Malvern Lions Club have replaced their scholarship, which sent one pupil to Outward Bound, with a new annual year 10 initiative that this year sees three DHS pupils participate in the Hillary Outdoors Programme on Great Barrier Island. This course focusses on Leadership, confidence and self-belief raising, as well as pushing past comfort zones in numerous outdoor activities.

The Malvern School of Music (Inc) is excited about bringing Pandemonium to Darfield on Saturday, March 9th! Based around the percussion section of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Pandemonium is a group of percussionist members who come from a variety of musical backgrounds. They will display a wide range of percussion instruments for those keen to attend and will bring plenty of groove as they take their audience on a world tour of styles and instruments.

“This is an opportunity not to be missed, whether you are looking to improve your sense of rhythm or just have fun,” commented Cecilia Pascoe, Pascoe one of the event organisers.

“Everyone interested from school age and above is very welcome and participants do not need any musical training to participate fully,” she added.

Pandemonium will lead two, one hour long, workshops: the first will feature rhythmic drumming styles and Brazilian Samba music, using their set of traditional Brazilian Samba percussion instruments. The

second part of the morning: an interactive presentation, finishing with a Junk Jam concert.

Anyone with a smart phone and access to a computer has all the equipment needed to enter the Malvern 48-hour FilmFest Challenge. All creative activity required to produce a film writing, shooting, editing, audio mixing, and submitting an entry - must occur within the 48 hours of the competition, which begins Friday evening, July 12th 2019 at 7pm and ends Sunday, July 14th 2019 at 7pm.

“Get a team of creative, enthusiastic filmmaking friends together and spend a winter weekend making a two to six minute short film,” encouraged organiser, Phil Baldwin, Baldwin Chair of the Malvern Community Arts Council, and local sponsor of the FilmFest Challenge.

The completed films will be screened for the teams of

filmmakers and the general public at the Darfield Recreation Centre on Saturday, July 20th 2019 at 7pm, and prizes will be awarded by a panel of judges.

“Countless filmmakers over the years have entered some variation on the Malvern 48-hour FilmFest Challenge in NZ, America, Britain, even Antarctica! They exercised their creative talents, had fun with their team, and they made a film, too! Still, we have a list of prizes, so if you and your team are the competitive type, you’ve got your work cut out for you,” Phil continued.

Local Hororata swimmer Ben Smith recently competed in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Open Water Championships held at Mount Maunganui Beach on February 9th, finishing with some excellent results. Ben is usually a pool swimmer with the Waitaha Swim Club where he trains four to five times a week.

However after winning the Timaru Open Water 1.5 kilometre race in both 2018 and 2019 he thought it would be a great idea to give the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Open Water a go.

This was his third open water swim and big swells of 1.5 metres were nothing like Ben had swum in before. Ben finished an outstanding seventh in the 1.25 kilometre Under 14 year old boys’ race and an amazing thirty second out of one hundred and eighty two starters in the Open - adults and children's race. Ben was one of the youngest competitors in this race.

It was reported to be a fantastic location with perfect weather for the event which helped make it a wonderful experience for Ben. “I was slightly nervous on Ben’s behalf, but he couldn’t wait to get in the water and go,” commented his mum, Juliet Smith.

Smith Ben loved this event and she is sure he will take part in more similar ones when he gets a chance. At this stage in Ben’s swimming he is more suited to distance swimming rather than sprinters. “He has a pretty good engine on him to keep him going, so he is well suited to open water swims,” Juliet added. Open water swims give swimmers another option and it’s a bit of fun for them as well.”

The timing of the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Open Water Championship, previously held in January, has now been altered to better fit in with the academic year. This enables Year 9 - 13 students to compete in races across 500 metres, 1.25 and 2.6 kilometre distances.

There are numerous other Open Water Swim events available to the public for participation and details of these can be found online.

To the Editors: Your correspondent Andrew Horsburgh (letter, February 8th, 2019) is mistaken in holding the current Mayor responsible for granting consents to Bathurst Resources Ltd. The Council’s consents for Bathurst’s operations were originally granted by a councillor panel, in the early 2,000’s. In dealing with resource consent applications, the Council is strictly bound by the provisions of the Resource Management Act, and we are fully satisfied that correct processes have been followed in granting the original consent and the 2017 variation.

Bathurst is currently in a resource consent application with both Selwyn District Council and Environment Canterbury, which is progressing. One of the issues to be addressed through this process is the impact of the company’s operations on the district’s roading network. A decision on public notification of this application is expected before the end of this month. The Council is also continuing to monitor noise generated by the operation, however current monitoring results indicate that noise levels do not breach either the District Plan, or the existing consents.

Readers should note that the road between Coalgate and Darfield (SH77) is controlled and maintained by NZ Transport Agency, not the Council.

Hockey is described as a fun, fast paced sport which is inclusive for everybody.

Additionally it is reported that it contributes towards happier, healthier people and betterconnected communities.

Unfortunately, not everybody has the same access to get involved in hockey. This is due to a variety of reasons; travel, time and cost are only a few of the barriers that are stopping people from being able to take part. The support of local associations is a key component to helping break down some of these barriers, and the ‘Grow the Game’ initiative aims to make a difference. Hockey has long had a presence in Malvern and so were excited to have their recent application for funding approved.

“Malvern Hockey Association (MHA) applied to a national wide funding programme,

brought about by Colin and Grant Chester of Chester’s Plumbing and Bathroom, along with kookaburra Sport NZ,” said Nicolle Hughes of MHA. “This funding was made available to ‘Grow the Game’ of hockey in the local area,” she explained.

“MHA was extremely fortunate to receive 47 Junior Kookaburra Sticks along with a number of Stick Bags,” Nicolle reported. “These are hugely well received and will be used in a new inter-school competition beginning very soon.”

These sticks will also be made available to local schools and groups for use.

“MHA thank Chester’s for this much appreciated, generous donation and look forward to growing the game in the Malvern area,” N icolle concluded.

Hot air balloons will return to Hororata in May 2019 getting fired up for the Hororata Night Glow in the Hororata Domain on May 18th. (Postponement date Sunday, May 19th.) The Hororata Community Trust’s inaugural event, held last year, captured people’s imaginations and delighted a huge crowd.

“Hot air balloons hold a certain magic and the Hororata Community Trust is excited to be bringing the Night Glow back for a second year,” said Hororata Community Trust Executive Officer, Cindy Driscoll.

Driscoll “The festival last year was amazing, not only for its entertainment value, but it also benefitted our community in many ways,” she added.

The event’s success was publicly recognised when it gained the 2018 Selwyn Tourism award, with adjudicators commenting: “The judges were particularly impressed by the clear evidence of community engagement. It is clear that many community groups, and the community as a whole, benefitted from this event economically and socially.”

The Festival surrounding the Night Glow entertains visitors with science demonstrations, a walk through a cold inflated balloon, food and wine sampling, live music, a huge range of food vendors and much more,” she said.

Recently applications for stallholders opened and businesses and community groups have until March 25th to apply online. The committee is also seeking expressions of interest from performers and bands who are interested in

being involved.

The Hororata Night Glow is a community event with proceeds going to the community, particularly the new Hororata Community Centre project. The Hororata Community Trust is offering businesses the opportunity to partner with them to help this unique festival take flight.

“Running two large events (Hororata Highland Games and Night Glow) each year is a big ask for our community, not only for volunteer commitment but also funding,” Cindy explained. “The Night Glow is a new event which needs investment to establish its future for our community. It also represents an excellent marketing opportunity for innovative businesses. We always look at any partnership to be a win-win scenario,” she said. “The Hororata Night Glow has the potential to be a major event for Canterbury with national and international appeal, but we will never lose sight of our community roots and the desire to ensure a family friendly, atmosphere with just a touch of magic,” Cindy said with a smile.

Sophie has been named on the Youth Rider Squad having constantly proven her skills and dedication to the sport. Sophie had to fill a number of requirements to be considered for the squad; be committed to

Darfield Vetent staff got behind charity ‘Heartkids’ by wearing pink (you’ll have to believe us about this!) in support of the foundation on February 14th. This date was International Congenital Heart Defect Day and Vetent staff were well aware that families facing this huge challenge need support. Having someone nearby who can listen, offer practical advice and share information is vitally important. They also need to know they are not alone. Heart Kids is the only charity in New Zealand dedicated to providing that support.

The RSA have teamed up with the newly established New Zealand Remembrance Army with the mission to clean and restore 100% of New Zealand war graves by December 2020.

There are tens of thousands of war graves in New Zealand and many of them are scattered throughout public cemeteries.

These graves mark the final resting place of NZ war heroes, many of whom have been long forgotten with their headstones and plaques left in disrepair.

The New Zealand Remembrance Army is led by former Army Major Simon Strombom.

Strombom “The need for this work to be done is now beyond urgent,” Simon said. “Many families of our fallen have since moved on and they no longer maintain the graves.

We have completed over eighty service graves in Porirua Cemetery and have proven our methods and ability to restore headstones to a very high standard.”

The initiative which involves the RSA is a practical step forward in response to criticism of the RSA not engaging with their community. Since launching the NZ Remembrance Facebook Page on January 1st, this year, the group have swelled to over 600 followers and have appointed over twenty regional coordinators to manage volunteer groups all over New Zealand.

“We put a call out for help and offers have been flooding in from all over the place. With the help of the RSA social media team, interest has been off the hook. RSAs, cadets, schools, ex and current forces personnel and corporates have all registered their willingness to get involved. It’s part of our culture, brothers and sisters pitching in and doing the right

thing.”

While volunteer numbers look promising, the real challenge will be funding the initiative.

“Because of the sheer volume, there are some significant costs involved. We have secured some support from Bio-Shield and are in talks with a few iconic New Zealand brands. This is a feel good, Kiwi grassroots project that will last a few years and get lots of interest,” Simon commented. “We would welcome any approaches from Kiwi companies who would like to be involved.”

Around this time annually, Year 5 and 6 students from all the Malvern Primary Schools (Kirwee, Darfield, Greendale, Hororata, Windwhistle, Sheffield, Springfield and Glentunnel) come together at Glentunnel School for the Top Team Competition.

The Event, run by Sport Canterbury, creates a fun and

engaging opportunity for students to mix with peers from other schools. Twenty eight teams of around nine to ten members compete against each other, over fourteen different activities. These activities are designed to promote team work, problem solving and communication skills. It was reported that the students

thrived in this environment and loved the variety of activities.

“With most of our Year 6 students making the transition to Darfield High next year the connections they make during the event are hugely beneficial to all,” commented Glentunnel School principal Dion Stechmann. “Thank you to all “ the teachers, staff and parents who contributed to making the day a great success,” he concluded.

The Darfield Cricket Club held their Sponsors’/Club Day last Saturday which saw a large crowd of supporters watch Darfield Premier win against Oxford/Rangiora in a close encounter.

Darfield v Oxford/Rangiora at Darfield - February 16th, 2019 Darfield got their season back on track with a clinical win over Oxford/Rangiora after losing the toss and being asked to field under grey skies, at Darfield Domain.

The Oxford/Rangiora top order made good progress helped along by some sloppy fielding from what is usually a matter of pride for the Darfield players.

Darfield captain, Michael Pauling may have been wishing the toss had gone his way when a score of 250 or more was on the cards, but his bowlers persevered and turned the innings around. Special mention goes to Zak Foulkes taking 4/13 by bowling full and straight and Toby Kars 3/36 by bending his back and hitting the pitch hard. Oxford finished with 180 from their 45 overs on what was arguably the best batting pitch produced at Darfield this season.

The Darfield run chase started in familiar fashion when opener Nick Jenkins fell for a speedy 21 runs and number 3 batsman Michael Pauling was given LBW for a duck.

Then Jesse Frew made his way to the middle.

Frew combined with opener Zak Foulkes and they gradually accumulated singles, while still clobbering the odd bad ball. Foulkes departed for a patient 21 runs and soon Chris Warner was gone too, for only one run. The wobbles were moments away until Frew and Cullen Moody combined. Frew began to hit the ball, seemingly wherever he wished, and there was nothing the Oxford bowlers could do about it.

The innings of the season was unfolding, before a good crowd of supporters, as Moody did his best to get Frew on strike, while still having the presence of mind to hit boundaries himself. A moment of comedy was provided when the Oxford wicket keeper let through a bye, only for the ball to hit a helmet left on the field by Oxford, resulting in a five run penalty and two run byes. This helped Darfield chase down the visitors’ score with seven balls to spare. Cullen Moody finished on 21 n/o but the stand-out performance was a steady and mature 93 n/o from Jesse Frew.

Darfield’s next game is against Sefton at Darfield on Saturday 23rd February.

We operate a modern fleet of thirteen sprayers, consisting of Isuzu Trucks and Bateman Self-Propelled Sprayers with boom widths ranging from 24 metres to 32 metres. We pride ourselves and our operators on providing a high level of service to our valued clients. To continue this level of service we are looking for someone to operate one of our modern machines. This position is based in Methven, Mid Canterbury.
