Not content with conquering a one hundred mile run in 2018 Darfield’s Mark Beattie has just done it again. This time though he knocked over two hours off his previous time in the eleventh Tarawera Ultra Marathon. The event began on February 9th, with running taking place at various locations including Hotwater Beach, Kawerau and Government Gardens in Rotorua and is part of the Ultra -Trail World Tour. The horrendous weather of 2018 wasn’t a challenge Mark had to face this year, as 20 Hours ECE are FREE!

conditions were almost perfect for the event. “My day started at 4 am in Rotorua,” Mark reported. “The day brought with it, perfect weather, and great scenery as we ran around nine different lakes, on trails, in the Rotorua area. During the day and night I had much encouragement from my great support crew - which consisted of my wife Lauren, and her parents. I was also appreciative of the pacer assistance from Tom Igusa, a friend from Auckland, who ran 40 kms with me throughout the night,” Mark added. ”I was pretty happy with my performance all up, especially managing two hours off last year's time .” Mark finished in 29th position overall out of 97 competitors and tenth in his section for the male 30-39 age group. “We’re extremely proud of him,” said Mark’s wife Lauren. I’d also like to thank Tom for pacing him too,” she continued. The Tarawera Ultra Marathon is a challenging ultra distance race in the Rotorua region consisting of 100 miles or 165 kilometres of narrow single track trails, wide trails, forestry

and sealed roads. There are forests, lakes, geothermal features, a boat-based lake crossing and the city of Rotorua for the runners to navigate throughout the event. This year saw a few big changes with a couple of events no longer being run and the
introduction of a 50 km distance. This spectacular course runs through places of cultural significance to local Māori and attracts around 2000 participants with more than 800 international athletes attending to take part.
