Two Rivers Community Trust Events proudly hosted their fifth Waitangi Community Fun Day on Wednesday, February 6th. “We enjoyed a fabulous day and created our own sunshine, as it had gone into hiding behind the clouds again this year,” said a spokesperson for the event’s organisers, Kelly Maude. Maude “Many commented though that it was a welcome break in the hot weather; testament to the great positive attitude our community has to

get together for events such as this.” Kelly thanked the huge team of volunteers and members of the community who contributed to the continuing success of the event. She added that with the busy-ness of the school-year start the Waitangi Community Fun Day provided an opportunity to catch up with friends and have fun, enabling the community to be together without needing to spend much at all. for the funding and local sponsorship they received to make the event happen. Pedalmania’s crazy bike creations were once again hugely popular for all ages and this year the Bumper Boats generated much excitement, along with Bumper Balls and Archery. The ponies and vintage fire engine were kept busy offering rides and there were many brightly painted faces to be seen also. The m o s t a m az i n g b a l lo o n

creations were proudly carried around, and these were created thanks to LolyTwist and Adam Allsorts. Sack races, tug o’ war and continuous cricket had all ages participating, and there were some outstanding sack jumping skills to be seen it was reported. “There was a lovely atmosphere with groups collecting to eat together and listen to the music,” Kelly enthused.

Writing about what she knows and enjoys Kristine put pen to paper (or more correctly fingers to keyboard!) and told the tale of her extended whanau’s love and participation in mountain biking and the tracks they’ve conquered together. The newly released publication is beautifully put together with a wealth of glossy photographs of the local children who make up Kristine’s family. “We do a lot of mountain biking together,” Kristine explained, “and this is what inspired me to write the book. I have written it as a non-fiction, easy-to-read, rhyming story about our family, mountain biking in Canterbury. Photos included in the book show local youngsters Skye, Skye

Harriet and Jack Collins, Collins along with Jack and Maia Daly and it has been beautifully published by my niece Joanne Baikie Lang. Lang I hope to inspire children to enjoy not only reading about, but also participating in, an awesome activity that they can do by themselves, or with family and friends,” Kristine added. “I am looking to encourage children to get outdoors, have fun and keep fit,” she added. By Lucinda Jarvis. Last weekend saw the annual Coast to Coast race take place over either one, or two days; February 8th and 9th. Held every February the race starts at Kumara Beach and traverses the width of the South Island, crossing the main divide and finishing at New Brighton Beach on the East Coast. The sun was out in force and many locals braved the heat to take on this tough competition. There were some great results and personal bests achieved. Kirwee local Mya Reid, a first time entrant in the Race partnered up with ex-local Wayne May to compete in the two day teams section. This was Wayne’s fourth time competing in the Coast to Coast. Mya commented that it was an amazing experience for her being able to compete in the 2019 Coast to Coast. She found the mountain run amazing and finished in just over six hours. “The bike ride from the Gorge was definitely the hardest part as there was a head wind but it was still so exciting to get to Brighton at the end,” she added. Mya and Wayne finished 43rd overall and a well deserved 8th overall in their category. Another local Vanessa Moore completed the Mountain run stage of the Coast to Coast with Julie and Nikita Crequer, Crequer she found this to be an awesome team to run with and it was reported that they had many laughs along the way. Vanessa found doing the run as a team, a fantastic way to complete this challenging event, as there were always others there tfor encouragement when the going got tough. She said, it was a

challenging, fun run with perfect conditions and awesome scenery. The river crossing was a highlight along with finishing in a time this group was very happy with. Vanessa unfortunately got cramp in both legs on the last half of the run, so it was a bit tough going for awhile. She is looking forward to

the next Coast to Coast already. Devon Crequer placed forth in the men’s open while Brendon Crequer placed an incredible second in the vet’s section.

Well done to everyone who competed in this challenging multisport event and congratulations to all those who achieved personal bests.

Our countryside is dotted with heritage buildings which tell the story of our communities and people. They include some of our unique churches, halls, taverns, war memorials, not to mention our historic houses and stables. Many buildings have been successfully repurposed for residential and commercial uses. They make up community facilities at the heart of our rural villages. Recent earthquake events have caused damage to some of our key historic landmarks and left question marks about the future of others. Hefty costs are being borne by building ow n e r s an d i ns u ra n ce companies to ensure buildings are fit for purpose and safe for the community. This includes our Councils as building owners. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has recently set up a new process for identifying earthquake prone buildings and requiring owners to ensure their buildings meet one of a few earthquake strength thresholds. The MBIE process also sets time frames in which building owners must make upgrades, or demolish unsafe buildings, depending on the level of risk the building poses. This will be a headache for most building owners as they will be required to have an

building consent for any necessary works and stump up the finances to make the necessary changes. For owners of heritage bu il din gs h owe ve r , an additional layer of complication will apply. Most works within heritage buildings require both a building consent and a separate resource consent under the relevant District Plan from the District Council. Additionally, approvals from Heritage New Zealand may also be required for building works depending on the category of the heritage building and the scale of the works, or earthworks. The Council and Heritage New Zealand rules are designed to ensure that changes to our important heritage buildings are not so significantly altering that they no longer retain the heritage values we appreciate the buildings for. For the most part, this is a perfectly acceptable process and building owners are well aware of the implications and costs of carrying out works. However, under MBIE’s new system, building owners may be forced to accelerate the timeframe in which to carry out works on their heritage buildings which require resource consents, adding additional costs and resource pressures. Where these building owners are our

Whether our central government realises it or not, they have effectively added time pressures to heritage building owners through forcing them to undertake works to strengthen earthquake prone heritage buildings, if they wish to retain them. This may include costs to the community f or h e r i t a ge bu il din gs supporting community facilities. While, with appropriate professional assistance, and strategic planning, obtaining a resource consent need not be difficult, it does add cost and time delays to what may already be a costly and stressful process.

THE CREDIT CARD TRAP This ar cle from interest.co.nz points out the danger in having a credit card and not paying it off in full every month. Every credit card bill you get will tell you the total amount you owe on your account, and the ‘Minimum Payment Due’,’ however unless you pay the total amount due, you will be charged interest. You seem to have two choices offered - pay the full amount, or pay the minimum amount due. Of course, you can always pay any amount in between. If you choose to pay the minimum amount stated beware! You are choosing an incredibly expensive op'on. The real problem is that minimum payment amounts are generally set too low. They look good, and are easy to choose without breaking the credit card company rules*. But they are a trap! Each 'me you make a minimum payment, almost all goes to pay the interest incurred and only a 'ny frac'on goes to pay the purchases you charged (the propor'on depends on your credit card rules). Each month (if you don't add any new purchases) the minimum amount due falls by a similar small frac'on. The result is, just paying minimum payment amounts could mean you will take 50+ years (yes, years!) to pay off your original purchase, and the interest you will have paid will be vastly higher than that original purchase. It is no coincidence that the people I see who don’t have a credit card are generally in a much be;er financial posi on than those who do!

By Lucinda Jarvis. West Melton based show jumping rider Tegan Fitzsimon, Fitzsimon is on fire at the moment. Tegan and her extremely talented horse Windermere Cappuccino (Vollie) recently won the Dunstan Horsefeeds and Equifibre National Grand Prix at the Tavendale and Partners N at i on a l S how J um p ing Championships held at McLeans Island on February 1st - 3rd. It was reported that this class attracted a good size crowd to watch the final and the riders provided the crowd with some fant as tic show ju mp ing performances. In the end it all came down to just the last fence to decide the winner, a nailbiting finish. Tegan started riding at five years old, mainly focussing on showing until she was thirteen, but from the age of fifteen, show jumping has been her passion. Now riding fulltime, Tegan gets her equestrian interest from her mother. Tegan’s mum has been around horses her whole life, but not in the competitive scene and while her dad is far from horsey, he does go along to shows to support her and help out where possible. Tegan started her partnership with Vollie four years ago when he was just four years of age and she was tasked with selling him on behalf of his current

So while that made this win extra special it was bittersweet at the same time,” Tegan commented. “I have a really good team of horses currently, they cover all height ranges which is fantastic as it gets me time in the ring at all levels. I’m very lucky to have such fantastic owners and supporters who have opened up a lot of new opportunities over the last few years,” concluded Tegan. Grand Prix is the highest level of show jumping. The horse and rider jump a course of ten to sixteen obstacles, with heights up to 1.6 metres and spreads of up to two metres.

Recently, an Under 13 year old boys Futsal team, made up of players from Darfield (Isaac Isaac Topham), Ezra Green Topham Rolleston (Ezra and Reece Ager) Ager and Lincoln (James James Page, Page Finlay Cotton, Cotton Hugo Greet and Casper Dusselier) Dusselier competed in the Craig Foster International Cup on the Gold Coast. The team won the tournament, beating teams from across Australia to qualify for the Futsal World Championships to be held in Florida. The Red and White Stripes beat the Gold Coast tournament favourites in the semi-final, a team who have competed in the World Championships for the last four years finishing fourth and second. They then went on to beat Melbourne 3-2 in a tight final, winning the Craig Foster Cup. The team is lucky enough to be coached by Ben Lapsie, Lapsie a current New Zealand Futsal All White player, who is teaching

the boys at the highest level. The World Champs are held in July at the ESPN World Sports Centre in Disney World, and hosts teams such as FC Barcelona, LA Galaxy, Brazil and teams representing five continents, with scouts from the major football clubs attending. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the boys and will allow them to compete against some of the top teams in the

world, all televised on ESPN Sports. It is the first time a Junior Futsal team has represented New Zealand at the event, and a great endorsement for Selwyn and Mainland Football,” commented Heidi Topham proud mum of Isaac Topham, team captain. Futsal is a modified form of football (soccer) played with five players per side on a smaller, typically indoor, pitch.

To the Editors: In response to Andrew Horsburgh’s letter regarding Canterbury Coal. I would be interested to know if in fact he buys dairy products that are sourced mainly from Fonterra, or Synlait who also burn coal? If so, you are supporting their company. Also just to clarify, Bathurst Mining has shares on the Australian share market, but that does not make them an Australian company coming to New Zealand. I’d also be interested to know how the noise affects you, when you spend half your time in Kaikoura anyway? Have you done any noise testing? I think you will find they never exceed 55 decibels (tested on our own noise monitor) - speaking is louder! If the Council had an issue with Bathurst mining I can guarantee they wouldn’t be operating outside their limits. We live right over the back of the mine and don’t hear them, or see the lights. I think you need to do your research in regards to this company before slamming them in the local newspaper. Go the Council first and consider your consumption of cheese, milk, dairy etc all produced from the coal from Bathurst. Have you done any research on the history of the town? It’s a mining town from a long time ago; my great, great, grandparents mined the land.

Bec Otton (Jake’s Mum) on her first day of school on September, 4th 1996 as an excited four year old. Jake has the same excited smile as his mum. Big family resemblance on both sides of the family.

2019, he is the fifth generation, and the 23rd Mulholland, to attend the School. Jake’s great, great, grandfather,, William Walter Mulholland attended 126 years ago in 1892, his great grandfather Arthur Lewis Mulholland in 1929, his grandfather Mark Mulholland in 1960, his father Daniel Mulholland attended in 1988 and now it’s Jake’s turn. Jake is fortunate in that he has maternal family in the area also. Mum, Bec Otten’s dad Kevin Otten, Otten emigrated from the United Kingdom in 2006 and lives locally in Sheffield. Nana Alison Iremonger, Iremonger lives in Ireland, but a very exciting point for both sides of the family is that Jake’s great, great, great, grandad Daniel Mulholland was born in Antrim, Northern Ireland. The Mulholland Family think it’s great to have more Irish heritage coming from Bec’s side of the family. Bec was born

in England, but moved to Ireland when she was nine. She had travelled to New Zealand a couple of times before she arriving in 2010 for her OE/gap year and to see her dad and step mum Tanita. Tanita After a couple of months here in New Zealand she met Dan and the rest is history! Jake has a bit of a mixed heritage from the Otton side of the family with there being, English, Irish and Spanish in the mix. Bec added that she loves helping Mark with the Mulholland’s ancestry and said “it’s pretty cool, to see all the genealogical history.” “Jake has settled into school well and is absolutely loving it,” Bec said proudly and she has heard some delightful compliments about him since he began. “He is enjoying all school activities especially swimming and is so excited to be a big school boy!”

This year’s South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) will be bigger and more diverse than ever it has been announced. The SIAFD are well known as an invaluable opportunity for farmers and contractors to see the latest agricultural machinery, but this year the event features something for the whole community with a greatly expanded lifestyle section and a Tractor Pull competition. SIAFD take place March 27th 29th at Kirwee. They are one of the oldest and largest agricultural events in the South Island, going back more than 65 years. Every two years it attracts about 30,000 members of the farming public. SIAFD organising committee chairman Rodney Hadfield commented that interest in this year’s event has been strong and virtually all exhibition sites have been sold. “We have done a lot of work since last time in terms of gravelling all the laneways and improving infrastructure, but the format will be the same as always.” Rodney added that the Field Days provide a huge opportunity for people in the agricultural industry to network,

meet customers and view new machinery. With its focus on presenting working machines, SIAFD reinforces the relationship between farmers, manufacturers, retailers, and technical experts. “The Field Days are all about getting the people who want to buy to come along and look. It is an event for people who are really ready to make financial decisions and spend their money. We want them to come to our event and get their Field Days deals.” Trevor Goodeve of Canterbury manufacturer Taege Engineering Limited, said SIAFD prov i de s a n inv a lu a b le opportunity. “Because it is in our own area, we can get feedback from our customers on the machinery that we design, build and develop. This ensures we are able to work directly with those farmers and contractors, to improve our business.” The timing of the SIAFD at the end of March directly helps Taege Engineering showcase its new equipment and set up its wi nt er m ach i n ery bu i ld programme. At its 2017 event the SIAFD organising committee introduced a lifestyle section on a trial basis and its popularity

has led them to expand it this year. SIAFD lifestyle section coordinator Michaela McLeod added that there will be more than one hundred lifestyle stalls. “They will showcase a wide variety of products - from garden sculptures and outdoor furniture to jewellery, clothing, art, plants and food products,” Michaela said. “Local producers including Kirwee Bees will also be participating, and we will also have a food court in the lifestyle section with jungle gyms and play equipment showcased next door.” This year will be the first time Tractor Pull has been held at SIAFD since they moved to their new home at Kirwee thanks to Diesel Tune NZ, which is sponsoring the event and providing prizes. “The first two days of the field days will be practice days and day three will be the competition day,” said Tractorpull NZ Inc general manager Vaughan Coy. Coy “We will have three classes of competitors - standard, modified and pre-1985. Already a number of people have said they will bring their modified tractors from different parts of the South Island, so it should be an exciting event.” Vaughan explained that tractors in each of the three competition categories pull a sled that weighs a percentage of its weight, which means tractors of different horsepower ratings can compete against each other. Entry forms for the event are on the Tractorpull NZ website (www.tractorpull.co.nz) and there is a 15 tonne weight limit on all entries.

Re-purposing coffee cups by sewing seeds to plant in the garden was a hit, together with the Community Garden produce giveaway. It was a wonderful opportunity to share with people how the Community Pantry works in the Community Garden at Almond

Park, with the motto, ‘Give what you can, take what you need’. There were some impressive contributions given, including some freshly made jam from plums someone had gathered from the Pantry earlier in the week. Glass jars were also repurposed as vases with some beautiful flower arrangements containing contributions from local gardens. It was lovely to see all ages having a go at

After taking home the big trophy from Mt Hutt 679 XC with the overall win on January 27th, Coalgate’s Ethan Rose, Rose the fifteen year old champion mountain biker, backed it up with a win in the Under 17 class of the South Island Mountain Bike XC champs a week later on February 3rd. This was reported to be a super close race with Jacob Tuner from Rangiora; both battling for the lead the whole time and touching bars every lap. It eventually came down to a sprint finish, the pair coming together again when Ethan's back wheel was touched by Jacob’s front wheel causing him to go down just metres from the finish line. This left Ethan to take a hard fought, but well

deserved, win and Jacob came in a very close second. “This was easily the best race of the whole day with the two, well liked, local Canterbury lads going head to head from start to finish, accompanied by cheers from a big crowd of spectators. Adam Francis from Palmerston North came home in third over two minutes back,” Ethan’s father Adam Heard said. “Ethan then flew to Palmerston North to compete in the North Island Mountain Bike XC champs on Sunday, February 10th. Competing again in the Under 17 class Ethan finished off his busy three weeks in style with another win, this time over local lad Adam Francis by a minute

and Jacob Tuner two minutes back in third,” Adam reported. Ethan added that he was super happy with the last three weeks. “It couldn't have gone better, I burnt a little too much energy in the first race at Mt Hutt (but I really wanted my name on that big trophy)! I felt a little tired in the South Island Champs, so I was lucky to take that one. My legs felt good for North Island and the course suited me,” he said. Ethan has time for some rest now before getting ready for National Champs at Rotorua in March, and Oceania Champs at Bright, Australia in April.

The new year started with a surge of growth for local business Curle Contracting Ltd (CCL) with the arrival of a 24 tonne Komatsu bulldozer and 18 tonne John Deere log skidder (the second largest John Deere skidder made). The growing business was pleased to have these important new pieces of equipment arrive to support their increase in capability and capacity for their clients. The Komatsu came with their purchase of the bulldozing portion of Rossiter Contracting Ltd, well known to Curle Contracting’s Oxford friends, and CCL looks forward to building on business in that region and beyond. The log skidder (which came from the North Island) has been added to the Curle group to increase the efficiency and capability of their successful logging operation. It has been an exciting ride for business owners Rob and Jan Curle who never expected that their one man, one digger business would today be employing fifteen staff and would have just purchased these large pieces of equipment to join their extended portfolio of fifteen machines. Curle Contracting Limited has grown

steadily over the last seven years to now include forestry work, rural excavation, farm tracks, road construction, driveways, drainage, and maintenance work on ski fields, to name but a few areas of their expertise. Rob, owner and founder, commented that while he enjoys all aspects of the work, he is currently particularly excited about the options their new bulldozer offers their clients for earth works, including mole ploughing, with the ability to lay underground pipe up to 180mm. Another new addition to the Curle fleet is a 14 tonne wheeled digger, which is proving nimbler than a traditional track digger - being able to move quickly on the job site. Growing so substantially has made for an interesting challenge. “We really couldn’t

have done it without our great clients,” Rob said. “We appreciate each job they give us, and work hard to understand what is critical to their business or property, be it a large farm, a construction project, or a homeowner, so that we can deliver a service that best meets their needs. The Malvern Women’s Pairs Bowls’ Championship was held at Kirwee Bowling Green on Saturday, February 9th. Players couldn’t have wished for a better day; really hot, but no wind. A full green of sixteen teams contested the championship with the eventual winners being Jill Hopkirk (skip) and Hazel Littlejohn from the Darfield Club. There were some really close games and some not so close; and also some surprise results coming from bowlers only in their second year of bowling which bodes well for the future. The Men’s Pair’s Championship, after having their qualifying rounds in January, contested their Post Section at the Darfield Green on Sunday, February 10th. The Post Section match between West Melton and Oxford teams went down to the last end with West Melton winning their way to the final against the Oxford team. In the final, as can be expected when these teams meet, a close game eventuated. The winners were Bob Shorter (Skip) and Bob Burnett from West Melton. Malvern can also be very proud of their Development Players who took out the Development Triangular Tournament in January between Malvern, Hurunui and Mid Canterbury. This was an exceptional result when Mid Canterbury has held

the Trophy since 2009. Also pleasing and looking to the future of Malvern bowls was the fact that the team consisted of three, two year players, who performed well above their years of play.
