Local dancer Teresa Barnhill recently attended the Showcase Dance Finals held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre and returned with some outstanding results.

• 2nd Senior Jazz routine • 1st Place National Champion for Lyrical in Senior Category • 1st Place National Champion for Ballet in Senior Category • 3rd Place for Contemporary with Platinum Gold award in Senior Category.

This put Teresa in the top five overall in the Senior Diamond Category, and saw her receiving fourth place.

Teresa, who dances for Levings School of Dance, in Christchurch, represented the School in eight teams at the Finals.

Following this success in the Finals and after selection by the judges, Teresa danced in three further teams for Levings in the spectacular Battle of the Stars.

This amazing show of skill and dance takes place in a fully equipped theatre with a paying audience present to watch.

To be able to dance in this near professional production, teams have to achieve at least a first place and be national

champions in the Finals, undergo Judges selection and then dance their hearts out.

Teresa returned home from the Battle of the Stars with: • 1st Place National Champions Senior Small Group Contemporary; winners of the Battle of the Stars; best choreography award; teacher’s trip to Portugal.

• 1st Place National Champions Teen Large Group Contemporary; winners of Battle of the Stars.

• 1st Place National Champions for Large Group Senior Contemporary; Runners Up Battle of the Stars.

Peter Oxford created Australia’s first ever Australian National Dance competition event back in 1994. It was simply named ‘The Showcase Australian Dance Championships’ and throughout the years has seen thousands of dancers perform on the its stages with many of them going on to professional careers in the Entertainment Industry.

Teresa’s results and those of the teams she was a part of are amazing and the News congratulates her on her success.

For those that haven’t heard, Danz Fit, based in Springfield has openings for dancers wanting to join them in classes across various disciplines.

Danz Fit’s owner Leisa Yaxley began her teaching career over twenty year’s ago after studying Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary to advanced levels.

“Being a dancer professionally never interested me,” Leisa explained, “but I always knew that I loved to choreograph. I was lucky enough to have a Mum that was also a dance teacher and I was able to start

my choreography journey from a young age. Choreographing is to me like an artist drawing a picture,” Leisa added, “you get to express your personality, but through the creation of dance.”

Originally Leisa began her dance teaching career on the West Coast, before continuing in Christchurch. Following her marriage to local farmer Clayton Yaxley, Yaxley and her move to Springfield it didn’t take Leisa long to know she wanted to offer locals the opportunity of learning something she loved to teach.

“Back then when I advertised

dance classes it was met with some derision - many commenting that country-girls played sport, and didn’t indulge in dance,” Leisa said with a laugh. However this definitely proved incorrect, as the success of Leisa’s dance school would attest. Dance classes initially took place in Springfield’s Tawera Hall with eighteen girls and two boys taking part, before Leisa relocated her Studio to Darfield. This move boosted pupil numbers to over a hundred.

As is often the case, life and its demands (three children and two family businesses) decree a change in direction and for Leisa this meant the sale of her Dance studio.

“I missed teaching, choreographing and working with kids tremendously,” Leisa said, “so I began teaching Springfield School children in a recreation class once a week.

After about a year of doing this I decided to open the classes to the general public and offer competition classes. Danz Fit also has a presence on the West coast and Leisa travels there once a week. Danz Fit has teachers resident on the Coast who share the load with her.

Three years ago, and needing numbers to form a competition team Leisa combined the two schools reporting that students have found this to be an awesome experience.

“New friendships have been formed and while the logistics of practice with the Main Divide coming between us has been a challenge, I think it has made better dancers of the team members. They have to perfect their routines with only half the team present, then combine their resources to perform,” Leisa said.

Now fast forward to five years on and with Leisa’s children a little older, one business on the market for sale and the desire to continue doing something she has never stopped loving Danz Fit is looking to attract applications.

Danz Fit has gone back to the roots of Leisa’s early years in business with classes being offered in Springfield’s Tawera Hall and Leisa has numerous pupils’ success stories from those participating recently see the advertisement in this issue for details of how to join them and be part of this success.

Tell us a bit about the play?

Shrek JR is based on the movie of the same name. It follows the story of Shrek a grumpy ogre, who just wants to be left alone in his swamp and his trusty stead, the hilarious Donkey.

They are tasked with finding and rescuing Princess Fiona and bringing her back to marry the very short and irritating Lord Farquaad. During the rescue Shrek and Princess Fiona fall in love. Along the way they encounter all the fairy-tale creatures and have to fight off a scary dragon. It is such a funny show with so many great songs that everyone will recognise from the movie.

How did you feel when you found out that you were cast as Donkey?

Pretty excited.

What have your family and friends said?

Mum found out before I did, so she told me when I got home from tennis. She said, “hey guess what, you have been cast as Donkey!” I said, “Wow”.

I’ve told most of my family, I think there a quite a few that are hoping to come.

We held auditions in December and everyone has had a great Christmas break, learning their lines. We started rehearsals on Sunday, January 27th and will rehearse three days a week until the final week where we will rehearse every day until the show dates.

I actually haven’t watched it much, apart from ages ago.

My favourite part is the start of the movie where Shrek is walking along and Donkey just comes along and starts annoying him.

What is your favourite thing about Donkey as a character?

Indisputably this is a much needed service - even more so for this area, which has a considerable road-distance/ travel-time, to the nearest hosp it al f aci li ty in an emergency.

Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue covers the largest single geographical area in New Zealand and in a life and death situation, where every minute counts, Air Rescue may be a patient’s only chance for survival.

While demand for the service is increasing, only 50% of the service funding comes from the Government (Ministry of Health, DHB and ACC). Air Rescue crew are on call 24/7, 365 days a year and over a 24 hour period, an average of three people in the region will place their lives in their hands. At the end of 2018 the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue were called out: In September 57 times, October 52 times and November 49 times - all at around $5,000 per instance.

While Craig was quick to join the Bayleys’ fundraising team of four (two males, two females) he has no idea what the Rescue Crew Challenge will entail! All will be revealed when they compete, head-to-head with other invited/selected crews on March 31st in the challenge entitled ‘A Day in the Life of a Paramedic’. In the meantime each team is responsible for fundraising a minimum of $5,000 - the average cost of an Air Rescue.

Forty four year old Craig, has lived all his life in the area, his parents were teachers at Darfield High School and he has farmed at Hororata, since finishing studying. Married to Sharon, Sharon the couple have two teenage sons. Although he’s not currently flying, Craig has his helicopter licence and is more than well aware of the cost of running these machines - he’s also knows how their speed and success-rate contribute to a positive outcome in an emergency situation.

“I’d love Malvern to get behind me in this,” Craig said. “If 5,000 people gave $1 - we’ve paid for another rescue - if those 5,000 could give $10 - we’re helping even more.”

Ashlley has just undergone a year of intensive study and retraining to learn how to take a more holistic approach to skin care - something which when explained, makes perfect sense!

Ashlley has been studying a theory called 'Corneotherapy' which is the protection and preservation of the stratum corneum (outer layers of the skin) at all times.

For the tenth consecutive year Selwyn District Council has achieved 100% re-registration of known dogs for the year.

This is based on dogs registered in the 2017/18 year which were still on the Council’s records.

There are now 13,659 dogs registered for the 2018/19 year.

Senior Animal Control Officer Steve Clarke said that result indicates that Selwyn is a dogfriendly district, where dog

owners are responsible and take good care of their pets.

“People love their dogs and are usually more than happy to pay the registration fee to avoid seizure,” he said. “The Dog Control Act gives Council officers power to seize any unregistered dogs, but thankfully it hasn’t come to that.”

Steve added that a number of factors contribute to the Council maintaining its 100%

registration, as required by law.

This includes the comparatively low fees for registering their dogs and Council’s online payment service.

“The fee is discounted if it’s paid in July, with the full fee payable from August. If fees are not paid the dog owner can expect an infringement notice.”

“Online registration has made it even easier for people to register their dogs -1322 of our owners used our Dogs Online website to make alterations to their record with 914 of them using it to pay the registration.

Of our 8519 owners, 7122 received their renewal notices via email.”

was presented in today’s language, so that everybody knew what the usually Italian, or German, words were saying.

The dramatic effects added by the soloists completed the delivery of superb opera - some hilarious, some dark and dramatic. It is no small feat to play what are usually full orchestral scores, on just one piano, but Mark did just that, as well as performing a beautiful solo item,” Olive explained.

By Lucinda Jarvis. been a Canterbury Country and IPS (Inter Provincial Series) Two talented local brothers, Tyler and Lucas TapaTapa-Wither are excelling in the touch world, and both have been selected for Canterbury teams.

The brothers have a love and passion for touch and rugby and these two sports complement each other well.

Sport keeps the boys fit all year round. Tyler and Lucas both show great dedication and go the extra mile, doing extra training and runs. This commitment shows the passion and love these boys have for their sport.

Tyler has been selected to play in the Canterbury under 16 mixed touch team, that is playing in the National Touch Tournament in Rotorua, to be held on February 8th-10th.

The team is made up of seventeen teenagers (ten boys and seven girls) from all over Christchurch. “They have training every Sunday morning at 9am and practice games against Canterbury and New Zealand touch players at the Burnside module on Thursdays,” explained Tyler and Lucas’s mum, Melanie Tapa.

Tapa The team leaves for the National touch tournament this week, and are away for five days. Training kicked up a gear the first week after Christmas to give the team all the preparation they needed to hopefully have a successful tournament. A lot of time and effort has gone into getting the players ready, with a couple of training camps being held.

Players used this time to build on the skills they have learnt and build up a great team rapport. Tyler was in the under 14 boys team last year, so he has some idea of what to expect at tournament. He has

This was the first time Lucas had trialled for a Canterbury touch team spot, he must have shown great skill as he was selected for the Canterbury under 12 mixed team. Lucas’s team trained twice a week in Christchurch and he was honoured to be chosen as captain for the tournament the team attended in Nelson during November last year. This tournament was also attend by teams from Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast. The team played well and put their skills to the test throughout the tournament, they finished a very well deserved second. The team stayed together at Tahunanui in Nelson which was great for the all important team building.

Next for Lucas was the recent

They played amazingly and won all their games which meant they made it into a nail biting final against Otago,” Mel enthused.

The team showed skill and determination and won the final where they received well deserved gold medals. Lucas’s Canterbury touch team have just had their prize-giving.

Lucas was the very worthy recipient of the, ‘Most Valuable Player’ award for his team from throughout the season.

Lucas was also an Ellesmere Rugby representative last year. Lucas and his family would also like to thank his sponsor, whose support was greatly appreciated.

To be eligible for Canterbury selection the boys play in a Rolleston touch module and the Prebbleton touch module. This means the boys have touch three nights per week and one day on the weekend. A very busy life on the road for this family.

Touch is a variation of rugby league with the tackling of opposing players replaced by a touch. As touches must be made with minimal force, touch is therefore a limitedcontact sport. Distinctive features of touch football include the ease of learning it, minimal equipment requirements and the ability to play it without fear of major injury.

Kirsty Sharapoff has just won the exciting Speed Horse Title 125cm class at the South Canterbury North Otago Show Jumping event at Waimate held on January 19th-20th. Kirsty’s equestrian yard is based in West Melton. She rides the handsome and very talented Shoot The Breeze (Merv).

Merv was bred at Willow Glen Stud in Waimate and he trialled three times as a race horse, but was unsuccessful. Kirsty purchased him in 2010 describing him as a weedy wee thing back then that took quite a while to strengthen up.

However he showed huge promise right from the start.

Merv and Kirsty have formed an amazing partnership over the years and have had success in many disciplines, from show hunter, show jumping, dressage, eventing and have even tried their hand at showing, but apparently that

wasn’t really Merv’s thing. Kirsty and Merv had had plenty of success over the years together, they won the National Three Day Event 2* title in 2016 and also took out the Amateur series that year, as well. In 2018 he won the N ational S how J umping Championships Pro Am title and defended his National Derby Championship that year too.

This season has been a little mixed for Merv and Kirsty with success at the South Island Three Day Championship placing second in the CCI3*.

This year has started off well for Kirsty and Merv with their win at Waimate. Merv showed his nimbleness and tidy technique through a very challenging course. Kirsty and Merv made the course look easy jumping clear in a time of 73.36 to take this exciting win. The plan now is to do a little show jumping (show jumping is a competitive competition in which each horse

and rider combination are judged over a set course of obstacles. The winner is decided by faults and speed over the set course.) and dressage and then the pair will be working towards the South Island One Day Eventing Championships in April and hopefully head North to Taupo in May to have a crack at the 4*.

Kirsty has horses in her blood having a horsey mum and rodeo dad. She first started riding at two years old on a pony that had been broken in by her mother. Kirsty had a break away from riding for about eight years while she was getting her bachelor of physical education degree and diploma of teaching at Otago University where she focussed on athletics with the 400m hurdles being her main event. In 2002 she moved to Christchurch to teach Physical Education at Burnside High School and after retiring from athletics due to injury, she returned to riding via track work for Margaret and Neil Ridley.

Since resuming riding Kirsty has never looked back, her passion and commitment for horses is as strong as ever. Kirsty is heavily involved in the equestrian world being the South Island Riders Rep and on the Equestrian Sports New Zealand Eventing Board, as well as being Chairperson of Eventing Canterbury. Kirsty is grateful for her sponsors and her team of horses and commented she, couldn’t get by without help from her mum, Merle Ogilvie.

Although the summer months are upon us, the Darfield Rugby Club has its eye firmly set on the Rugby season ahead. Since the end of November, the Club has been running a Coaching and Teenage Rugby Development Programme. This programme, created and run by Mervyn Todd and Tim Wright, Wright aims to develop the skill of Coaches and give them the tools and confidence to coach teenage and even senior grade Rugby in the future. Tim McNae, McNae the Darfield Rugby Club Junior Club Captain commented that, “as with all Clubs, Darfield struggles to keep

coaches after the kids’ grades.

They often feel that more is expected of them (as Coaches) with teen Rugby, and there is a bit of fear factor involved with moving into these grades and coaching teens.”

This programme looks to teach these coaches a different way of coaching for a new era in Rugby.

“It’s about getting away from those traditional, repetitive drills, type of coaching and concentrating more on the core skills and making sure they are right,” Tim said.

To the Editors: It is unbelievable the noise that is coming from Bathurst. It is now 11pm on the 30-01-19. I hold Sam Broughton, as head of the Council, personally responsible for giving Bathurst the right to mine around the clock. There have been many nights that we, the residents of Whitecliffs, Glentunnel and Coalgate have had to put up with this situation. There was no consultation whatsoever with the rate payers that are affected by the shocking noise, not to mention the light pollution from the flood lights that totally block the stars in the night sky, and the dust. The Council and its officers are totally out of control and have forgotten they are meant to be and, only to be, looking after the rights and welfare of the ratepayers.

Bathurst is a billion dollar Australian mining company that has come to our country to rip the coal out of the earth that goes straight to Fontera’s boilers. This is a huge open cast mine that is getting bigger all the time. The trucks and tankers are ruining the road between Coalgate and Darfield and the repairs are shocking.

Rate payers are paying for the substandard repairs.

For the players, the programme is about upskilling teenage players and teaching them about the fundamentals of the game and to ensure they are ready for Under 18, Colts and Senior Rugby when the time comes.

Currently ten Coaches and around thirty players are involved in the programme that runs once every three weeks on a Monday night at the Darfield Rugby Club. The Malvern Community Board held its first meeting of 2019 on Monday evening, January 28th, in the Darfield Library and Service Centre. The Board heard a presentation from Caroline Shone, Chief Executive of Community Energy Action. Caroline told the Board the focus of her organisation is to improve living environments. They take a holistic approach and focus on sustainability.

Some of the services provided by her organisation include assistance with insulation, earthquake damaged properties and free, recycled curtains. They work closely with Environment Canterbury on the Healthier Homes Targeted Rates Programme and their partners include community groups such as Age Concern; Ministry for Social Development and other government agencies; District Health Boards and the energy sector, including Orion and MainPower.

General Board business included reports from the Chair and members and the Board identified a couple of projects they would like to get involved in during the year.

There was a presentation from Council’s Community Relations Manager, Denise Kidd, who attended the meeting. Denise introduced Emmaline Sibbald, a librarian at the Darfield Library.

Denise briefed the Board about the role of the Community Relations Team. She told the Board about the extended library hours’ trial which starts on February 1st, 2019 and gave them an update on pools’ usage. Denise told the Board members that in the short term economic development and visitor promotion will focus on e.g. golf, ski/walk/mountain bike areas, looking at everything Selwyn grown including food and wine and looking to link up to the Bread & Circus - World Buskers Festival in 2020 and the Lantern Festival in 2019.

Board meetings provide time at the start of every meeting for anyone to address the Board. If you wish to speak at an upcoming Board meeting please feel free to contact the Chair, Jenny Gallagher (jenny.gallagher@selwyn.govt.nz) or the Board Secretary, Therese Davel (board.secretary@selwyn.govt.nz) to arrange a time.
