It was reported that people Selwyn locals Jason and Jarnia Kupe, owners of The Hororata Village Bar and Café / Willows Café Glentunnel took their wares to the Great Kiwi Beer Festival, held at Hagley Park on Saturday, January 26th. “Beers and Pies go together like Strawberries and Cream,” commented Jarnia, “we sold over 750 Butcher’s Pies and thoroughly enjoyed the reaction and enjoyment when people took their second bite. Seventy percent came back for a second pie!”

The Butcher’s Pie team were onsite by 8am with their pie bakers having spent the 48 hours prior on rostered baking to get enough stock prepared. The quickest to sell out was The Butcher's Sausage Roll - voted in the Top 5 in New Zealand. “So there were no

surprises there,” Jarnia quipped.

Second sellout was the Butcher's Pork Belly and Apple Sauce with Crackling. “But the most popular flavour of the day would have to be The Butcher's Steak and Cheese Pie,” Jarnia

added. “The Hororata Village Bar and Café / Willows Café Glentunnel got great exposure for the day and we definitely plan to do it all over again next year! It was a fabulous event!”

Chloe qualified for finals in all her events achieving gold in the women's 13-14 year age group 200 individual medley which she ended up sharing with a fellow Canterbury swimmer and a visitor; silver in the 13-14 year women’s freestyle relay with fellow swimmers Charlise Miller, Miller Holly Moore and Siobhan Hawker.

Newbigging Katy also attended the swim camp for six days and Samantha commented that she got a lot from it. Katy’s training involves three to four times a week in town, as well as with the Darfield Club, when she can fit it in.

Other students from Darfield High School that also attended this competition were Ethan Taylor (finalist in all his events, winning three individual silver medals, plus a bronze and a silver medal in the relay); Charlise Miller (a silver in the girls’ relay and several finals) and Ben Smith (who swam competitively).

When Mayor Sam Broughton met with representatives from Lime Scooters it was to get an initial understanding of how Lime operates and what intentions they might have to extend their Christchurch operation into Selwyn. This was only a very informal discussion as the full Council has not debated the matter yet. There is no proposal, or agreement, for Selwyn to be involved in any trials, or the rollout of Lime Scooters at this stage. Lime Scooters have already been taken for rides in Rolleston and

Lincoln, and many people from Selwyn will have used and enjoyed them in Christchurch.

Of course it has no furniture so when people come to hear Opera in the Sawmill on February 3rd, they will need to bring their own chair and wear sensible shoes. People are also invited to bring a picnic so they can eat, drink and enjoy the performance.

On Sunday, February 17th Sheffield Rugby Club will host the fourth annual Mountain Bike race on some pristine private hill country farms, thanks to the Stokes family ‘Wyndale’, the Cleland family ‘Annavale Station’ and the Ferguson family, family ‘Baldoon’.

Like last year the event offers a 24 kilometre MTB race, 12 kilometre recreational ride for more relaxed riders, and a 11 km trail run.

They also have a section for those bikers who are loyal to their own rugby club. They must wear their Club jersey and the winner of this section wins a $300 voucher from R80 to go towards their Club’s junior teams’ resources and more importantly, bragging rights for the year!

All proceeds from the MTB race will go towards the Sheffield Rugby Club’s kids’ rugby, while the running race funds will go toward the Sheffield Cricket Club.

“We are extremely grateful for the amazing sponsorship that we’ve received and are aware that the event couldn’t go ahead without this level of

Zak graduated from the Ara Institute of Canterbury in 2017 with a Bachelor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance. Initially Zak was majoring in pop drumming, but after being exposed to the world of jazz music, he switched to the jazz stream.

Last July, after a successful audition, Zak travelled to Europe to participate in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam Summer Jazz Workshop. On this course Zak studied with wellknown New York jazz musician John Reilly and played with jazz musicians from all over the world. Involved in the Christchurch music scene, Zak performs at various venues in the city and has formed the Zak Williams Trio. While jazz is his primary passion, Zak also enjoys practicing and playing a wide variety of genres such as

reggae, hip hop, rock and funk.

With his drum tutoring established in the city, the Malvern School of Music (MSM) warmly welcome Zak to their tutor team and know students will gain some excellent skills under his guidance.

The Annual General Meeting of the Haunui Trust Retirement Village was held last month.

Geoff Inch, Inch who has chaired the Board for the past six years retired as chairman. His time with Haunui commenced in 2010. He led the Trust through the very difficult time of renewal following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. His more recent challenge has been to lead Haunui through the complicated process to become a retirement village that complies with the Retirement Village Act. All villages are now required by law to do. Geoff has made a wonderful contribution to the success of Haunui and we are delighted that he has agreed to continue to stay on the Board.

Bernard Duncan was elected as the new Chairman of Haunui with Ann Jarman elected as vice chairman.

Alistair Adams as Residents’ Representative and Charles Draper stood down from the Board and all at Haunui are grateful to them for the service

they have given.

Two new Board members were appointed, they being Colleen Davidson as Residents’ Representative and Rob Frew.

Frew Both bring ranges of experience which will be of value to Haunui.

It is with sadness to report that two residents have passed away recently. Mrs Betty Beattie came to live at Haunui in 2007 and over the last eleven years has made a great contribution to the life of the Haunui community. Mrs Dorothy McKay became a resident in 2017 and enjoyed her time at Haunui. We are sorry that her time with us was so short. The Board has expressed condolences to the families of both former residents.

Haunui therefore has two villas available. Another villa will soon

be available on a rental basis.

In line with Board policy, should they need it, villas are extensively renovated when they are vacated. This work typically includes interior repainting, updating electrical fittings, replacing floorcoverings and completely refurbishing bathrooms, where necessary.

Eighteen year old Devon entered in the Homestead Half (20km with a 529m climb) Category and won the event overall with a time of 1:42:08.

His mum, Julie and sister, Nikita a ls o co mp et e d i n th e Homestead Half and his uncle, Brendon and aunt, Marina competed in the Alpine Adventure Race Category (1.5km swim, 7km kayak, 64km bike with a 1389m climb, 17km run with a 411m climb).

Brendon finished third in the male section with a time of 6:32:08, while Marina finished second in the female section with a time of 7:30:11.

By Lucinda Jarvis Sam Dickson from the West Melton Rugby Football Club proved a broken nose was no barrier to competitive play when he took to the field for New Zealand at the HSBC New Zealand Sevens 2019 tournament on January 26th27th in Hamilton.

Sixteen teams competed with Fiji retaining their title and New Zealand winning a bronze medal on home turf.

The nose incident occurred after Sam copped an accidental knee to the nose in the quarter final against Australia, and left him needing medical attention.

After a few running repairs Sam returned for New Zealand's win over Australia, he was then in the starting line -up for the semi-final against the USA which was lost 17-7 ending their title hopes.

Most days the event was full, or near to capacity. Parents were quick to comment that it was a great option for their children to attend and learn new creative skills, while also being cared for and entertained during the school holidays. day if signing up for a full week made it an affordable option, in addition to the free supervision from 8:30 - 9am and 4:30 5pm each day.

The holiday programme has also been a great introduction to art and dance with some students opting to sign up to term time classes as well.

I’d like to start this year off on a high note but my industry has been in the media over the Christmas break for the wrong reasons. There’s a case of a WOF Authorised Vehicle Inspection Centre (AVIC) completing and issuing a WOF incorrectly and missing an important safety item. The vehicle was involved in a crash and the missed item caused the death of the occupant. This has caused a ripple effect through the NZTA and they have cracked down on some of the AVICs with poor results and have revoked their issuing licence. At current count there are eleven AVICs sites suspended and over 24,000 vehicles that need to have their WOFs rechecked. In Darfield one of my customers purchased a vehicle with a WOF from one of the suspended sites. We have completed our own check on the vehicle and are happy to say there were no faults found.

We take our WOF authority very seriously and are under contract to NZTA to complete the inspections on their behalf. We have your vehicles condition and the welfare of other road users at the front of our mind, while we complete your WOF check to the NZTA requirements. Our inspectors have regular updates and we always support each other to make informed decisions. You can view the full list of requirements on the NZTA website. Once your car passes the WOF inspection, you're required to keep it in this condition. The frequency of the check depends on when your car was manufactured. So for all you folks that have got pets, like dogs and chooks, it is extremely important to keep the area clean. Picking up dog faeces on a regular basis, preferably daily, and disposing of them correctly so that the flies can’t get to them. Also trying to keep your chook house clean because chooks are a big aLrac on for flies, which become a pest not only to you, but to your neighbours also.

The warm weather brings out the whitetails and they are far more ac ve. People need to be aware that if they are going to have the inside of their houses treated they must be out of the premises for three to four hours and the house needs to be prepared prior to spraying. Mt Olympus ski field held an enjoyable open day on January, 20th which was attended by 75 people.

Many of those present tramped up to the tarn at the top of the main tow, with some climbing to the back ridge and others to the top of Mt Olympus.

“Everyone enjoyed learning about the history of the Club which was formed in September 1932 and was known as the Windwhistle Winter Sports Club Incorporated,” said Club me mbe r K ar en M e ar es .

“Membership meant that members could participate in the ski competitions held at the Ball Hut at Mt Cook,” she added.

“Ice skating was a predominant

activity for the first few years, until 1948 when Ken Hall led a group of skiers up the Mt Olympus Valley. A decision was made to develop a ski field at the head of the Valley, now known as Mt Olympus ski field.”

From 1949 a road was put in up the Valley and the bottom hut was built. The road was slowly extended up to what is now the top hut, which was built in 1957/58. From then on ski weeks were held each winter with many local children enjoying these over the years.

“The top hut has had additions added to it in the ensuing time, creating the wonderful facility the Club has today, for everyone to enjoy.”

Mains power was installed right up on to the field in 1986.

“The Club welcomes everyone for skiing during the winter and many of the Club’s junior skiers are recognised for their success and skill in national freestyle and racing competitions.”

Mt Olympus still very much operates as a Club with members taking an active role in the operation of the Field and carrying out its summer maintenance. The open day generated much interest from people who were keen to become members of the Club.

KIMBER RURAL FENCING FENCING Farmlands is offering members of the public the chance to enter the digital age for free.

‘Digital Ready’ is a pilot programme aimed at increasing the digital skills of those working within the farming sector. After successfully introducing starter technology skills to Farmlands staff members, and with some funding left over, the cooperative and its partner, The Learning Wave have made similar training available to eligible residents of Selwyn and North Canterbury.

The course aims to increase a participant’s ability to use information and communication technologies, build digital confidence, get tips for rural business use, stay safe online and ensure personal wellbeing.

In Selwyn, this will consist of four training days at the Darfield Library, to be scheduled between March-May and includes a free lunch.

Sessions will be delivered by an experienced trainer from The Learning Wave, a nationwide coaching and development company. Learning will take place in small, supportive groups of up to eight people.

“We developed the first course for our own people and at the start, most participants rated their ability to learn new systems and technologies as limited. After the course, 90 percent believed they were fluent in learning technology,”

Farmlands’ Chief Executive Officer Peter Reidie said.

“Farmlands is currently undertaking our own business transformation and technology is the enabler. We want to meet our sector’s needs in the future but we needed to upskill our own people first. As a result, we identified an opportunity to help our shareholders and rural communities to engage with the digital age,” Peter commented.

“Farming will evolve dramatically in the next ten years. New platforms are designed to make on-farm decision-making more efficient, insight-driven and rigorous. But people need to have the knowledge and skills to make the most of these technologies.

We want our shareholders to be ready.”

Farmlands is in conversation with government agencies, private industry businesses, sector training bodies, other co-

operatives and nationwide rural networks to determine whether ‘Digital Ready’ can be rolled out further afield. The success of the pilot programme will be a litmus test.

The Farmlands ‘Future Fit’ digital staff training programme is shortlisted for the Innovation and Technology award at the New Zealand 2019 HR Awards.

Winners will be announced on February 28th.

To access the course for free, applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, be in some form of employment and meet some criteria based on formal education received. Other requirements must also be met.

Richard and Jake had both competed in the two person event last year and found the new four-person teams’ event allowed them to complete their sections of the race as fast as they could. It also allowed team members to compete in their areas of strength and work together as a team. The four person section allowed four team mates to work together over six challenging stages of the race. Teams are only allowed a maximum of two members at a time to be competing in each stage. The other team members acting as support crew while not competing.

Red Bull Defiance is an event that attracts many of the world’s best endurance athletes. Designed by Braden Currie, Currie New Zealand’s foremost adventure and multisport racer, the course was planned to test athletes over two challenging days, racing alongside the world’s best multisport and endurance athletes. From the start of the 2019 first term, the Malvern School of Ballet is under the tutelage of Saba Polderman Charles, Charles having previously been owned and operated by Frances Scott.

Scott Saba, who lives locally, is an experienced dancer and after dancing for twelve years has recently qualified and received her Royal Academy of Dance Teaching Certificate. Saba commented, “I am excited to take on the role that Frances has so wonderfully developed and it’s business as usual at Malvern Ballet with preparation for taking Royal Academy of Dance exams, early childhood classes, and working on some competition pieces as a side.”

Saba, who was homeschooled from the age of eight, had the opportunity to pursue both dance and music. Alongside ballet, she has played the piano for fifteen years and studied Music and Performance at a tertiary level. “I currently study under Melanie Lina, Lina an American concert pianist, as well as performing in a band and playing professionally for them.”

Saba has achieved advanced levels of ballet through the Royal

Academy of Dance with Malvern Ballet and she has been teaching for the School since the age of sixteen. “I just love it,” Saba commented. “I adore teaching as it is such a privilege to be able to assist each student reach their highest potential. I have also been teaching a ballet technique programme for TM Danceworld for the past year and will continue that this year too,” Saba added.

The Malvern Ballet School has now moved into the newly refurbished Kimberley Hall where Saba will offer small classes as she feels this enables her to give a better quality of teaching.

This guy is dining alone in a fancy restaurant and there's a beautiful redhead sitting at the next table.

He's been sneakily checking her out ever since he arrived, but doesn't have the courage to start talking to her. Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket toward the man. His reflexes kick in and he reaches out, plucks it out of the air, and hands it back to her. The redhead is mortified. "Oh my, I am so sorry," she says as she pops her eye back into place. "Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you." So he joins her table and they enjoy a wonderful meal together.

Afterwards they go to the theatre followed by drinks at a bar. They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams and he shares his. She listens. After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap. He says yes and they return to her place. He ends up staying the night. The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy is amazed at how everything has been so perfect and how incredible this woman is. He can't believe his luck.

"You know," he said, "you are the perfect woman, are you this nice to every guy you meet?"

"No," she replies, "You just happened to catch my eye."
