Proclaimed by organisers as being extremely successful the UFBA (United Fire Brigades Association) South Island Waterway Challenge took place in Darfield, at the Recreation Reserve on Saturday, January 19th. The event, where competing Brigades challenge each other in feats of strength and ability while putting hoserunning and pump-operating skills to the test in a fun and competitive environment. The weather was warm and fine bringing out a large number of spectators who attended throughout the day.

“The event was well supported by local businesses,” commented Alan Kittelty - Chief Fire Officer Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade, and Chair UFBA Challenges Committee. “It was a pleasure for the Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade to host this event and bring many visitors into our community," he added.

kept busy throughout the competition with organisational tasks, timing and general assistance, as well as competing and answering an emergency call mid-morning!

Oxford: The Arts in Oxford Gallery will host a solo exhibition by Kris Waldin from January 27th until March 3rd, with the opening taking place on the 27th at 3pm. The Near and Far exhibition features selected works spanning the period 2015-2018.

The local environment is a constant source of stimulation for Kris, from the unfolding drama of the nor’wester above foothills, or wild flowers dropping petals. Large painted landscapes convey a sense of movement and atmospheric energy whilst small drypoint prints of sculls, nests and moths in heirloom bottles commemorate foraged beauty. Windy landscapes, botanical illustrations, still life assemblages, and figure drawings all reveal the artist’s intense study of near and far, made over the period 2015-2018.

Kris studied art and design at Christchurch Polytechnic, graduating in 1992 with a diploma of Visual Communications. She has since worked as a graphic designer and illustrator, alongside travelling, before taking up painting full-time in 2010. Now settled in Summerhill the view from her art studio encompasses the Oxford Ranges towards Glentui and Mt Thomas. Kris can often be found walking along the Rakahuri River, or collecting found objects in the Bennetts and Summerhill areas nearby.

Selwyn Gallery kicks off its 2019 programme with ‘Earth & Sky’ featuring artists Roger Chaplin, Chaplin Heather Jonson and Barry Smith.

Smith The exhibition will bring together familiar landscapes, patterns and forms in a range of mediums, with moody tones and vibrant pops of colour.

Heather’s works suggest, in a lighthearted way, some possible answers to the question of who created the planet and what they might look like if we were to create our own. Paying homage to Kandinsky, fanciful images invite the viewer to extend their imagination and consider a design or two them se lve s. Heath er is influenced by a range of genres from Expressionism to traditional and contemporary Maori art and craft and is a current finalist in the 2019 Zonta Award in Ashburton.

Barry is a retired scientist with a love of literature, art and the outdoors. Barry’s recent work includes reduction woodcuts, intaglio techniques and solar prints depicting back country locations about Canterbury, where he travelled in his formative years in the 1950s, as well as elsewhere in New Zealand Barry has exhibited twice before at the Selwyn Gallery and with Waikato Art Society. His poems and vignettes are published and anthologised in journals and books within New Zealand and internationally.

Roger first became interested in pottery while studying Fine Arts at Ilam University, studying under Doris Lusk, Lusk a competent

potter herself. His obsession with clay led him to set up a home-based workshop and build a kiln to continue his practice on leaving university.

An accomplished potter, Roger has produced stoneware, porcelain, salt glazed and lowfired-wares throughout his career. His recent works are in his signature form, fired in sawdust creating mystical nebula and galaxy like effects.

There’s a gem right on Darfield’s doorstep in the form of Porters Lodge and new Lodge managers Ian and Marjolein are making it easy for locals to experience just what the facility has to offer.

Along with the epic views, the Lodge can accommodate up to forty guests, making it an ideal location for private functions including birthdays and anniversaries.

The Summer in Selwyn Pool Party at the Darfield Pool on Sunday, January 20th saw a great turnout of around 180 swimmers and spectators enjoy the event. Organisers commented that the weather was perfect; sunny and warm, but with enough wind to make the air move.

Those attending enjoyed not only the games and competitions with prizes, but also the DJ who kept everyone entertained with music. Land games like noughts and crosses, throw a ring around the pole and others were all very popular with the crowd. The Darfield Play Centre did a sterling job on the barbecue with their fundraising sausage sizzle and it was reported that a good time was had by all.

Warm weather - a pool inflatable - games and competitions all contributed to the success of the Summer in Selwyn Darfield Pool Party.

The Waitangi Community Fun Day is back for 2019, hosted by Two Rivers Community Trust on Wednesday, February 6th, 10 am - 2pm, at Darfield Domain.

The Day is a fun-filled free event for the whole family to enjoy.

Many favourite activities are returning, including Pedalmania, House of Lego, pony rides, petting animals, and vintage fire engine rides.

Darfield Playcentre will have numerous enjoyable activities for little people, and will be running their delicious bake sale again. The Darfield Plunket Toy Library will be alongside them with plenty of toys to try out, and ice blocks for sale.

There will be a bouncy castle pirate ship for the under fives, a castle and slide for the over fives. Plus an inflatable obstacle course, joined by soft archery, bumper boats and bumper balls to provide heaps of fun for bigger children. For those ready to start learning to drive, there’s the chance to have a mini driving lesson!

“We are excited about our focus of being more sustainable this year,” Kelly continued. “The Community Garden will have free produce available to take home.

You’ll have the chance to repurpose used coffee and water cups by planting some seeds to either grow in your garden, or plant in the Community Garden,” she added.

There will also be the opportunity to have a go at arranging flowers in recycled containers, create something in the recycled junk maker-space, or paint a rock to hide around

the community with JAM Rocks.

Plus, heaps of information and ideas on how to be more sustainable and reduce waste.

“Bring along a reusable bag to pop your goodies into,” Kelly encouraged.

“We welcome back Vinegar Jam providing live music, along with the Kiwi themed summery vibes and announcements to help everyone know what’s happening,” Kelly added.

“You are most welcome to bring a picnic and there will be coffee, candyfloss, burgers, hot chips, sausage sizzle, and pancakes to purchase. If it is wet on the day, the event will still run but be based inside the Recreation Centre instead. We’re looking

Following overwhelmingly positive feedback from local residents, trial commuter bus services for Darfield and Leeston will begin from Monday, January 28th.

Environment Canterbury senior manager public transport Stewart Gibbon said he was pleased with the response to the proposed services.

“We needed to know if the Darfield and Leeston communities agreed with us that there was a need for a service like this, and if they were prepared to support it,” he said.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton added that the new services will be a boost for the townships.

“It was great to have so many people support the proposal for a trial. These buses will provide a valuable sustainable transport

To the Editors: In response to the letter from Adrienne Begg in the Malvern News of January 18th, I can assure her that Kirwee is not singled out for neglect in the care of its parks and reserves. Darfield has had very little lawn mowing this summer in its reserves and play areas too.

There are three such areas between Bangor Road and Greendale Road that at times one expects to see being made into hay bales. Before Christmas the grass in the reserve on the corner of Cressy Place and William Hyde Place was up to my knees with flowering weeds and it was unable to be used for anyone to play on or even walk across. It was more like a wild flower meadow. I rang the council and was told it was because of the rain, we know that did not rain continuously for over six weeks so it was not only that.

The Mulholland Reserve is often long enough to make hay and, as Adrienne pointed out, once the long grass is finally cut it lies there going brown and looking disgraceful.

We would hope that our rates are used for basic care in the local area, not just big showy things in Rolleston.

Local people try to make the area look attractive and it would be nice to think the Council helped us.

With one in five Kiwis dying from heart disease, the Heart Foundation needs more people to join with it by volunteering as street collectors for its Big Heart Appeal 2019 next month. A business that has been in one family’s ownership for fifty years has just changed hands and its new owner is keen to get everything up and running and back on track in 2019.

Now named Rural Gorse and Hedge Trimming Ltd and owned by Chris and Dawn O’Donnell it first began as part of the Stevenson family’s group of local businesses. Patriarch, Stan Stevenson purchased the business in 1968 and operated it for five years before his son Gary came on-board. Gary subsequently bought the business from his father and has been the owner operator for the past thirty years.

Chris, the new co-owner/ operator of Rural Gorse and Hedge Trimming Ltd is a longtime resident of the area.

He was born and raised in Hororata and has forty years of farming experience behind him, including ten years mustering in the high country. He has most recently undertaken farm management roles, but felt it was time for a change and the challenge of self-employment.

Many will know Chris’s business partner and wife Dawn as one of the friendly faces behind the counter in Darfield’s Bakery

and between them the pair plan to provide great customer service, safety, expertise and an updated data base for their new business.

“I’ve purchased the equipment and client list from Gary,” Chris explained, “and while we definitely still cut gorse we are also moving more into shelter belts under pivot irrigation. Our max cutting height is 3.5 metres and because cutting is weather dependent I plan to visit as many clients as I can in any downtime, to introduce myself. If however, I haven’t shown up onsite to do just that - my contact details are in this issue and I’d welcome any new, existing or past customers,” he added.

As a sole owner/operator Chris can ensure the quality of the job and the safety that goes with it, at all times.

“I would like to thank Gary for this opportunity and also for his help in transitioning into the job. I wish him well for the future and look forward to meeting you all and the challenges of keeping things tidy, be it gorse hedges, shelterbelts or under pivot hedging. I can be contacted anytime,” Chris concluded.

As for Gary’s plans now the business has a new owner; well he plans on being able to visit his Canada-based grandchildren on a more regular basis and enjoy life to the full.

“I thank all my clients for their patronage over the years and wish Chris and Dawn all the best,” Gary said. “For me it was the perfect time to move on, enjoy life while I can and allow someone else to move forward with changes to the business,” he concluded.

The Lamb and Hayward Canterbury Stroke Play competition for 2019 was played at Pegasus Golf Club on January 19th - 20th. Local Hororata Golf Club Captain and member Anton Fouchee won the Men’s Masters.

Anton overcame a three shot deficit after thirty six holes to shoot the best third round score and take the win by two strokes.

The Men’s Masters championship was lead by Aaron Forsyth going into the final round but he unfortunately didn’t have the round he wanted and finished in third.

Veteran Marty Holman had a good performance finishing in second. “Well, well I’ve

brush out and got rid of some rust that built up over the holidays. Had three solid rounds on a course that can be challenging, especially when the wind gets up like yesterday afternoon!! Today was all about being patient and beating the course. Managed my game well and learned a few things through the process, hopefully

Anton has had many golfing successes and will be part of the team to play in the 2019 Woodward Cup competition. This competition is a premier Canterbury Golf Interclub competition which Hororata Golf Club is very excited to have a team in.

The skatepark design aims to cater for beginner to intermediate scooter and skateboard riders. This first phase of public consultation runs from January, Wednesday 10th to February, Wednesday 13th.

The Council would like to know what kind of features the community would like at the skatepark. An example to get people’s ideas flowing is the newly finished Lincoln skate park, located outside the front

As parents and children prepare for the new school year, Police want to encourage parents to talk to their children about road safety.

“The school summer holidays are long, and that means children are out of practice at getting to and from school,” said Inspector Peter McKennie, McKennie Operations Manager for the National Road Policing Centre.

“They may have forgotten some of the basics of road safety and some children may be starting school for the first time.

“So we asked some friends to help us with a few road safety messages in a video that people can watch on www.police.govt.nz/news/ release/keeping-kids-safearound-road.

“It’s a good idea for parents to sit down with their kids before the end of the holidays and have a conversation around road safety rules, especially if your child is going to be going to school on their own.

“Help them to choose the safest route to get there and do a few practise walks or bikes with them, so they are familiar with the route and the safest places to cross.

“It is important to remind them that any time they are crossing the road they must stop, look, and listen for any cars, motorbikes, or cyclists before they step out.”

Police also urge all older children and adults to be good role models on the road and remember that kids are watching and will do what

others do.

“If you break the rules, children will think this is the norm and follow suit.

That puts their lives in danger.

So everyone, please set a good example; look both ways before crossing the road, use pedestrian crossings where they are available, wait for the green cross signal at traffic lights, and if you’re driving make sure everybody is buckled up.

“Motorists; remember to watch your speed around schools and be extra alert in case a child runs out in front of you without warning.

Children can make mistakes and they don't deserve to pay for them with their life.

“Even small increases in speed result in a much greater increase in your stopping distance, and that can mean the difference between life and death for pedestrians, so it's vital you slow down around schools.

Three Selwyn district women bowlers were part of the New Zealand team for the eighth International Deaf Lawn Bowls championships held at Burnside Bowling Club in Christchurch from January 7th -13th.

Barbara H errick, Hazel H azel Littlejohn and Margaret Bailey are from West Melton, Darfield and Leeston Bowls Clubs respectively. The New Zealand team was made up of both men and women members from throughout New Zealand. Both Barbara and Margaret have made regular appearances for the Games in the past, while this was fourth year bowler Hazel’s first International call

up. Players from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Australia descended to Christchurch to participate in some very closely fought competitions.

It was reported that, the women’s team played great games against Scotland and Wales beating both teams to sit second on the table behind Australia. On the last day of competition (Sunday), saw the women battling it out with the Australian’s again. Unfortunately they were disappointed not to beat them in the fours and singles but after lunch, the tables turned around for New Zealand and they won both the triples and pairs against them.

Barbara and Hazel came away from the championships with a gold medal each in the Triples which they played with Patricia Hansen from the Terrace End Bowling Club, Silver for the fours which Carolyn Wilks and Joan Richards both from the Fitzroy Bowling Club also played and Silver overall for the Women’s team. Margaret was reserve and part of this silver medal winning team. The men’s team also came away with a gold medal for John Lavell (Sumner Bowling Club) in Men’s singles and Sliver for men’s team overall.

Dennis Herrick, Herrick Barbara’s husband is the President of the International Deaf Lawn Bowls Federation, it was reported that he had done a fantastic job, organising and ensuring the smooth running of the Games.

On the rest days, trips to Akaroa, Antarctic Centre and the City were organised for the players and visitors.

The International Deaf Bowls Championship is an empowering event that is crucial for members of the deaf community. Deaf people can often feel a sense of isolation in a hearing dominated world and without deaf sport the deaf community would lose the ability to thrive.

A woman walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the Loan officer. She says she's going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000.

The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the woman hands over the keys to a new Mercedes Benz SL 500. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank, she has the title and everything checks out.

The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan.

The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at her for using a $110,000 Benz as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Benz into the Bank's underground garage and parks it there.

Two weeks later, the woman returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, “Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. “What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?"The woman replies, “where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?”
