Many readers will have taken the off-work opportunity to head away on holiday, maybe with the boat, or the caravan, to spend time in what is undoubtedly one

I can’t recall another year when the road berms are still green in January - they’re generally burnt, ugly and brown. Definitely easier on the eye to be lush and green. So for those who are struggling to get back to waking up with an alarm - it’s only eleven and a half months until you can sleep in mid-week again!

Happy New Year from Darfield Dental Centre. We hope you have had a restful summer break. Our start to the year is a little delayed because David (our dentist) has suffered a back injury. This has meant that he is off work currently and awaiting medical advice on how to proceed. The practice will be staffed from Monday, 21st January by David and Kathy Nustrini our new practice manager. We hope to secure a locum dentist over this time and with medical assessment we are hoping David will be able to complete limited tasks with a gradual return to work over the next few months. We are fare welling our lovely Claire as its time for her and her family to move onto new challenges – we will miss her and wish her all the best. Kathy our new practice manager comes from Torbay, North of Auckland and is moving to area with her horses. Kathy has had many years’ experience and will be your first point of contact from the 21st January. From 25th February David will be joined by Julia Tully as a full-time dentist. She is very experienced and will be a great asset to the business. We are looking forward to her arrival. • •

Golden and healthy tan? It wasn't always this way; for centuries tanned skin was considered una7rac ve, especially among women. A tan was not golden or glowing, but brown and weathered, and proof that someone laboured outdoors. Well-bred ladies protected themselves with parasols and long sleeves. Coco Chanel was widely credited, or blamed, with changing that! In 1923, as the story goes, she accidentally got a lot of sun while sailing aboard a yacht to Cannes. When she returned from the Riviera with a golden tan the fad was born, and so started the fashion of the tan. So does exposure relate to our skin ageing prematurely? Over exposure to UV Rays sets off a chain of chemical reac on in which the skin will send out melanin (tan) to protect its cells from damage. This can show later in life as pigmenta on and sun spots which are difficult to move. In this over exposure to sun the DNA in the cells becomes damaged and slows down the cells’ func on, resul ng in accelerated ageing, loss of collagen and elas n produc on in the skin - causing it to appear thinner and lose its youthful plumpness. What can we do? Sun screen all year round? This is o2en the source of debate, but is in fact very true. Although in summer and spring we have more UVB (burning rays), in winter we s ll have plenty of UVA (ageing rays), therefore there is s ll very much a need for sunscreen during all seasons. Recently there have also been studies showing that infrared light from devices and ligh ng can also contribute to ageing, something to think about when we are tapping away at our screens. What sort of protec on? I believe a quality sunscreen specific to the face and free from harsh chemicals is a must to prevent premature ageing of the face and neck. Please beware of using body sunscreens on the face as they can be full of these irritants. They can cause more harm than good, and so I never recommend them to be used on the face. The Cantastic Tree foodbank drive that was held at the end of 2018 was reported to be a huge success . The Darfield Library tree had 175 cans donated from generous people from around Darfield and the wider Malvern community. Across the district 450 cans were collected and donated to the Ellesmere Foodbank. This community group supports all residents of Selwyn in times of need. This was the third year this fabulous foodbank drive has been run. Pictured above is the 2018 Cantastic Tree from Darfield Library looking very full with all the wonderful cans that were donated.

By Lucinda Jarvis. The South Island Waterway Challenge will be hosted by the Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade on Saturday, January 19th at the Darfield Recreation Reserve. This competition will get underway at 8:30am and will continue through to approximately 3pm. Spectators are welcome to head along and watch some of New Zealand's top fire-fighters compete in this fast paced exciting competition that has been an enduring one for all fire-fighters since it was first introduced in 1885. This is a perfect opportunity for spectators to head along and support local teams while enjoying a packed picnic from home, but do remember a blanket or chair to sit on while watching the exciting action. A coffee cart will be at the venue for those important refreshments. This year sees teams from

Ross, Kaitangata, Greymouth, Rangiora, Mataura, Hokitika, Oamaru, Brunner, Omarama, Mossburn, Balclutha and Darfield competing. This competition is run by the United Fire Brigades Association (UFBA), it provides a wonderful opportunity for spectators to watch Brigade members go through their paces. This competition is open to any firefighter and consists of two and four person teams who compete in a range of hose running and pump operating tests in a fun and competitive environment. This competition will challenge fire fighters skills and fitness but one of the most important aims of this competition is to help improve their fire fighting skills. Teams are comprised of a maximum of five persons for a four person team and three persons for a two person team and no person can compete in both two and four person

sections at the same UFBA funded challenge. Teams must compete in all relevant events and comply with uniform requirements, including helmets during each event. Many competitors from this competition will continue on to run at the North Island event at Morrinsville on February 9th, and the national event at Wainuiomata on March 3rd. The Darfield Fire Brigade would like to thank all the businesses who have supported this event.

As we have looked at before Edge and Internet Explorer are the Microso2 offerings but what of the others. The other browsers come about with a perceived need for varia on in the space. When a new ambulance was presented to Selwyn St John at the Rolleston Hub on Sunday December 6th Michael McEvedy Knight Commander of the Order of St John said it was a very special day for both St John and the Community. He welcomed everyone to the consecration on behalf of St John Officials, staff and supporters. The Lions gift of a new Ambulance costing $180,000, from the surrounding Clubs of Ellesmere, Malvern, Rolleston, Selwyn, Halswell and Christchurch Chinese, was also warmly welcomed by John Sunckell Chairman of Selwyn Central St John who said it will greatly enhance their ability to cope with emergencies, in this rapidly expanding District. The Reverend Laurence Ennor then led a blessing for the new vehicle and all who travel therein. Presenting the Ambulance on behalf of Lions 202-E District, Vice District Governor John Whyte spoke of the 3,500 hours of fundraising three

hundred members had put in to accumulate a local contribution of nearly $72,000 over the last two and a half years. Lions, by belonging to the largest service organisation in the world of over 1.4 million members, were able to qualify for a grant of $96, 000 from the ’Lions Clubs International Foundation’, based in Chicago. This organisation has already contributed over $1,000,000 into Christchurch and Kaikoura after the devasting earthquakes there. New Zealand Lions owned ’Lloyd Morgan Lions Club Charitable Trust’, was also called upon and contributed $8,500. To complete the finance, Lions are grateful to Westland Milk Products, with local dairy farmer Peter Morrison as their Chairman of Directors, who donated $4,000, demonstrating their commitment to the community and to the health and safety of their employees. John also thanked the Project Chairman Bill Pickering of the Rolleston Lions’ Club, for the time and effort he had put in to bring the project to a successful conclusion. He further, “congratulated our friends in St John on acquiring an additional member to their fleet, hoping they would not have to use it too often - but reassuring to know you will be well equipped when called upon.” In closing John thanked St John for the opportunity for Lions to

fulfill their motto of ‘We serve’. Bill Pickering, Project Chairman added that he had enjoyed being involved and how very satisfying it was to see the new ambulance ready to start serving the public from Rolleston Hub. He also thanked the six contributing Clubs for their efforts and the Lions who had supported him in his role as Chairman. He congratulated St John personnel for the professional and dedicated way they help people in distress, sometimes in horrendous circumstances, often risking their own lives as well. Bill thanked St John for their welcome and hospitality and presented a plaque to go on their Rolleston Headquarters as a permanent commemoration of the Lions gift. St John staff demonstrated sophisticated features of the New Tier Three, Mercedes Ambulance most notably the power operated pull out stretcher capable of negotiating rough ground, while supporting a 395 kilogram patient, with a minimum of effort by attendants. Costing $40,000 on its own and with heart monitoring equipment at $30,000, these two, along with other fittings, make up over half the cost of the Ambulance. By Anna Mackenzie, Senior Planner Baseline Group Most district councils place a restriction on commercial activities being carried out in rural or residential zones. By commercial I’m not talking about the commercial nature of your farm which may be your business. I mean businesses which are not relying on the use of the land to operate. Activities such as cafés, shops, office space or even warehousing and storage activities fall under the type of commercial activities councils are trying to control. By the use of blunt zoning tools, councils have identified areas where they consider that the predominant activities should be either rural, or residential, in nature, and zoned them accordingly. In most cases the District Plan rules consider that commercial activities of a particular size, or nature, or which generate a certain number of traffic movements should only be allowed to establish in these zones once considered through the resource consent process. But what is the harm of having one little commercial activity in rural or residential area? What effect could that possibly have? Bearing in mind that these rules apply to large areas of rural or residential zoned land, Councils use the planning rules as a trigger for enabling consideration of individual projects. This allows them to consider the specific details of what is proposed, what exists in the surrounding environment and what actual effect is likely to arise. It also enables Council to consider if many other similar activities might seek to locate in the same area, effectively changing the nature of the zone. Key considerations will be if the commercial activity will generate a lot of traffic movements, and if this will have an effect on the safety of the road, if there is sufficient car parking so that the streets or road berms are not full of parked cars, and if immediate neighbours will be impacted by the noise and general busy nature generated by commercial activities. Council should consider signage proposed to advertise the commercial activity, and what effect this might have on neighbours or traffic, particularly in rural areas. Signage that is too small, or too big, may create traffic hazards for motorists. Cafes might generate noise in residential areas which impacts on their neighbours’ ability to enjoy their properties during the day, or night, or evening lighting which causes glare for neighbours. In rural areas, there are questions around what happens with wastewater and where is water sourced from. All of these matters are considered by the District Council, and if the impacts are considered acceptable, consent will be granted. This wide range of matters which have to be taken into account by the Council reflect that not all parts of the rural or residential zones are equal. By considering each proposal separately, decisions and possibly design changes can be made to ensure activities do not impact on the primary rural, or residential, activities intended in that area. What is the harm in enabling a commercial activity in a rural or residential zone? The answer is that until the activity is investigated through the resource consent process no one knows with certainty. The resource consent process helps us to have some certainty and one part of why resource consents are required.

tasting every kilometre! Competitors will have the option of the 5km or 10km run. There will be a wine tasting approximately every kilometre provided by Lone Goat Vineyard and food around the route. Tasting of the wine during the run is optional and runners can have a water or electrolyte drink if preferred. This is a noncompetitive event but if people want to win and race their mate then that’s up to them. Dress up and have some fun. There will be spot prizes and costume prizes throughout the night. There is a time limit of two hours and thirty minutes on the run - so there’s plenty of time for those wanting to take their time walking and sampling the wines and water throughout the vineyard. There will be food stalls, a bar, entertainment and buses to get people to and from the Vineyard. When registering, people will register as a team, with a minimum of three and a maximum of six. One person is to be designated as a sober driver. If the sober driver is someone not participating in the run, they will need to be registered with the team as their driver. If any team hasn’t got a registered sober driver they will

have to purchase bus tickets to enter Wine Run. Spectators; if runners have anyone coming to watch them, they also have to register with the team. This will then allow them be able to watch and enjoy the hospitality and entertainment at the After Party. Spectators are different to sober drivers. No designated sober driver or no bus tickets; no entry! There is no exception to this. The organisers take their host r e s p o n s i b i l i ty s e r i o u s ly. People can bring their car to the Vineyard and leave it overnight, although organisers do not recommend this as security will not be responsible for these vehicles. For those wishing to catch a bus to Rolleston organisers can arrange for a pick-up from there. People will need to purchase the additional ticket for the Rolleston pick up when entering. This is an R18 event, meaning everyone has to be eighteen years of age to take part and to be onsite. Absolutely no one under the age of eighteen will be permitted in the Vineyard for Wine Run. Proof of age will be required when picking up the Event Packs when entering the Vineyard.

To the Editors: As a resident of Kirwee and ratepayer of Selwyn District Council, I am very angry, and not happy, with the Council mowing contractor’s lack-of-mowing before Christmas on the grassed areas of Kirwee; e.g. along the main road from Courtenay Road to the Garage and the Fowler Reserve between the main road and the railway line. We pay the same rates as other areas, so we should all be treated the same. They can’t blame the weather, as I have seen them mowing when it is raining. If the residents of Kirwee could get their lawns mown, so should the Contractors. Tourists travelling on the Trans Alpine and tourists travelling on the main highway must think the people of Kirwee don’t take pride in their township. But we do. When the Fowler brothers were doing the grassed areas for nothing, they kept it tidy and mown. I hope by the time this letter is published in the Malvern News, the grass will be mown. When they do mow, it’s going to look a mess, as the grass is long enough to make hay. If it gets very dry, it will also become a fire risk. This letter will be forwarded to our Kirwee Township Committee, to be discussed at their meeting.

The Greendale Community Trust is dismayed that vandals have attacked their community project at T. W. Adams Arboretum. The project involves restoring the beautiful heritage site for everyone to enjoy. The picnic table was damaged and a number of information signs ripped out of the ground. KIMBER RURAL FENCING FENCING Cantabrians are reportedly in for a finger-licking treat at this year’s Night Noodle Markets, returning to North Hagley Park on Waitangi Day for twelve nights. The event will showcase a lineup of twenty two eateries and family-friendly entertainment. Stallholders are handpicked by organisers to ensure there’s an array of traditional and modern Asian flavours, options for all tastes and dietary requirements, and a mix of stallholders from the Canterbury region, around New Zealand, and further abroad. This year’s Night Noodle Markets coincides with the Chinese New Year, giving Christchurch locals an authentic way to celebrate with traditional entertainment and the hustle and bustle of an Asian streetstyle food market. The event will run alongside UB40’s fortieth anniversary gig on Waitangi Day and Christchurch's Sparks festival on Saturday, February 16th (both also held at North

Hagley Park) - making it a perfect stop for a pre-concert feast. While food festivals are not us ua l ly t hou ght of a s environmentally-friendly, the Night Noodle Markets is defying the odds, having recently been nominated for Best Sustainable Event at the 2018 NZEA Event Awards. Since the event launched in Christchurch in 2016, organisers are working even more closely with the Christchurch City Council to minimise the effect of events, such as this, on the environment. At the recent Auckland Night Noodle Markets, a massive 95% of all event waste was diverted from landfill, and composted, recycled or reused. Christchurch stallholders must use approved compostable packaging, drinks are served in recyclable cans,and all event waste is hand -sorted into the correct waste stream, organisers explained. The 2019 Lake Crichton Series is a three race series utilising the world class, manmade Lake Crichton on Friday, January 18th, February 8th and March 1st. Found on Frasers Road, 25mins south of Hornby and 2km south of Dunsandel, Lake Crichton is extremely safe, no deeper than 1.9m, naturally heated to mid 20 degrees and only about 50m wide It is the most tranquil setting for a tri. The Friday evening series allows for all competitors, young and old, experienced and first timers, to finish their working week with a race. Contestants can enter individually or in a team. There are two race distances, detailed below, for both the triathlon and the duathlon. The triathlon begins with a lake swim (in water start), followed by a road bike and finished off with an off road run. The duathlon follows the same bike and run course as the triathlon but has a short

run before getting onto bikes. Race Distances: • Short Course Tri/Du; 150m swim/1.5km run, 8km road bike, 2.25km offroad run • Long Course Tri/Du; 400m swim/1.5km run, 16km road bike, 4.2km offroad run. The event is run by the Selwyn Sports Trust which was established to promote and support participation in sport and recreation within the Selwyn District. The Trust’s primary objective is to increase participation and volunteering in sport and active recreation by supporting, coordinating and complementing existing providers - clubs, schools and community groups. Special priorities for the Trust

include: • Creation and coordination of sport and recreational events that provide participation opportunities for Selwyn residents, as well as establishing Selwyn as a popular destination for sport and recreation. • Encouragement of young people within the region to participate in sport and recreation at community level and support of those aspiring to regional and national level. • Enhancing the well-being of Selwyn communities by encouraging and supporting volunteer coaches, officials and administrators. • Supporting and advocating for the provision of sport and recreation facilities for Selwyn communities.

In mid-December New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) launched its summer food safety campaign. This focuses on preventing people getting food poisoning by doing three simple things: Clean, Cook, Chill. Head of New Zealand Food Safety, Bryan Wilson commented that foodborne illness strikes about 200,000 New Zealanders every year with around half of those cases occurring in the home and with Campylobacter as the most common cause. “Campylobacter bacteria occurs naturally in the gut of animals and birds, especially chickens. It can easily be spread around the kitchen from raw meat to surfaces and other foods, and it can make you very sick unless you use good food safety practices,” he said. “The risk is greater in the summer months as the bacteria grows faster in the warmer weather. To avoid getting sick during the summer months, we want everyone to remember the three Cs: Clean, Cook, Chill,” Bryan stressed.

Clean: Before preparing food and after handling raw meat: • Wash hands, chopping boards, dishes, and utensils (like knives) in hot soapy water to kill bacteria and prevent cross contamination between raw and cooked food. • Dry properly. Preferably air dry and not with a towel.

“Another tip is that you shouldn’t wash raw poultry as this helps spread Campylobacter to the hands, clothes, other food, and contact surfaces,” Bryan added. NZFS’s ‘Clean, Cook, Chill’ campaign is on their website and social media channels and will run until April 2018.
