Since its inception Trust activities have included, health forums and seminars, subsidising community health initiatives, piloting an aged day care centre, a scholarship for tertiary health studies and the provision of a $200,000 loan to enable the new medical centre to be built. Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust employ three district nurses and six relieving nurses and over the years have firmly established themselves as a successful operation in the local community. The role of today’s Trust and its nursing providers is considerably more complex to administer than in the days of its initial inception. Ian’s replacement is yet to be decided upon, but he will remain as a trustee of the Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust.

Ian was presented with a magnificent stone statue - albeit a rather heavy one! “I definitely needed assistance to get it out of my car,” laughed Vicki Mulholland Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust co -ordinator, a position she has held for a similar number of years. The Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust came into being when the Darfield Medical Centre decided to discontinue the District nursing service in 1993. A number of locals led by Leith Creamer and the late Janice Collier organised an extremely well attended public meeting to address the Malvern nursing issue. A health committee was formed to determine how future home care nursing services should be managed. The first trustees were Ian Warren (Chairman), Bill

ARTHUR’S PASS Organised by the YMCA Arthur’s Pass Outdoor Education Centre the forthcoming Summer Fête has been arranged to provide a community event with something for everyone to enjoy. It’s also hoped the January 12th Fête will attract visitors to the picturesque township that’s right on the area’s doorstep. The event is part of the YMCA Arthur’s Pass summer programme and will offer something for the whole family. With market stalls, sausage sizzle, face painting,
bouncy castle, music, local crafts and products, games, a bake sale, raffle and more, the Fête with its free entry, is fundraising for the Centre’s outdoor education programmes (specifically clothing and equipment to reduce barriers to participation and enable more people to enjoy the outdoors). “The raffle has attracted some fantastic donated prizes,” event organisers commented, “and there are also still some spaces for stall holders selling locally made products,” they added.
The Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year Award aims to reward and identify everyday people doing extraordinary things in their local communities. These awards recognises the commitment, contribution and the sacrifices these Kiwis make to help make their local communities a better place for everyone. Paige Sullivan who is the current Selwyn Youth Councils Chairperson received a Kiwibank Local Hero Award on December, 4th at Addington Raceway where the ceremony was held. She received this award for the amazing work she does for the youth of Selwyn and also what she does as an advocate for all youth across Canterbury and New Zealand . “ I was very surprised and humbled to receive this award. It was wonderful to see people honoured who give up there time for free to help others. It was lovely to see those people celebrated with special awards,” commented Paige. businesses. “Children will be kept busy between the hours of 9am and 4:30pm with activities and we are also offering extended, free, supervised care for thirty minutes before and after these activities,” Vicky and Tara commented. "We hope this will help working parents juggle their busy schedules and make the lead up to Christmas a little easier," the pair added. The summer programme is aimed at children between the ages of five and thirteen and while in attendance they will be able to participate in arts, crafts, dance, play-time and Christmas movies. “The art and craft created in the week of December 17th will be seasonally themed,” Vicky explained. “Each day the children will create a piece of Christmas art and a Christmas decoration. Some of the art will depict a northern hemisphere, winter Christmas, but other pieces, like the pastel and dye ice-blocks, will represent our southern hemisphere, summer Christmas. We will also be making pompom baubles, Christmas crackers, Christmas cards, tree decorations and paper bag stars,” she added. To make sure the children are also up on their feet and moving, those attending will be able to participate in three dance classes each day. “The classes will consist of Jazz, Hip Hop and Acrobatics,” Tara reported. “These are all very different genres of dance, so we really hope there will be something to suit everyone,” she said. All the dance and art classes provided are suitable for beginner levels and are intended for the children attending to have fun and give it a go! It almost goes without saying that both Tara and Vicky are excited to be running this, their first ever summer programme together, sharing their love for the arts!

Local horse rider Nicola Maley competed in the CoolTranz Canterbury Dressage Championships held at Mcleans Island over the weekend of December, 1st - 2nd. She rode the beautiful Astek Galahad (Gilbert) who is a nine year old warmblood gelding. Gilbert performed like a true star for Nicola winning both his Level 7 tests and then taking out the Level 7 Championship. Nicola was a pony mad child and this passion has continued throughout her life. She has evented and ridden in the show ring but she has always had a real passion for dressage. Gilbert was purchased off the Astek Stud by the Maley’s when he was two and a half years old. Nicola’s husband Shane Maley broke Gilbert in and Nicola has produced him through to the level he is currently at. They have been competing as a combination for the last five years and have formed a true partnership. This is the third horse Nicola has produced to this fantastic level. The future goals for Nicola and Gilbert are to travel up to the North Island this season to compete at Nationals and Horse Of The Year, then step Gilbert up to Level 8 next season. Exciting times ahead for this talented combination. Dressage is a truly elegant equestrian sport which many people could probably relate to as horse ballet. It is a discipline that promotes harmonious riding and training to form a trusting partnership. Dressage develops willingness, expression, flexibility, balance and power in the horse. Achievement in dressage competition is measured by the correct execution of the requirements of the test at each level.

The Kirwee and West Melton Toy Library give their massive thanks to the surrounding local community for again supporting their annual fundraising raffle, which was held at the recent Courtenay A & P show. The proceeds received through this raffle each year enable them to keep operating and maintaining their resources, another reason why community support is so

By Lucinda Jarvis. Friday, December 7th Glentunnel School held their Pets Day. It was absolutely perfect weather for the students to enjoy a perfect day, fill of fun outside the classroom. In the morning the students were judged on their fabulous craft items and wonderful handwriting, that they had worked so hard on. In the afternoon there was the judging of the very important guests the ‘pets.’ Students were very proud of their special companions they brought along to school. Many other activities also took place on this fun filled day. There was a very popular
bouncy castle and stalls selling wonderful crafts and food items made by the students. Another great item on the days agenda was the annual cake auction,
this made an amazing $2,800 to go towards the cost of next year’s Year five and six camp. A fun filled day was had by all those who attend Pets Day.

To the Editors: Being a frequent user of McHugh Forest Park near Darfield, this is a great asset and normally a peaceful oasis of nature and lots of birdlife. However there is a large number of irresponsible dog owners who let their unruly, untrained dogs run amok, barking and rushing aggressively at walkers as if we were invading their territory. I would like to use this medium to urgently ask these owners to control your untrained dogs by keeping them on a lead if they cannot obey your commands or keep them away from public reserve areas until they are properly trained. Respect the peacefulness of the reserve and the rights of other users. I was rushed at today which left me shaken and had my four year old grand-daughter been with me it would have put her off dogs for life. The place for dogs to run freely in public space should be a dog park.

It was an action packed day at the Canterbury Mini Motocross Xmas Party on December, 9th. The conditions were perfect and everyone had an awesome, fun filled day which would not have been possible without the much appreciated venue for the day. Organisers of South Island Field Days advise that as at December 4th there were only thirty sites left at the March 27th - 29th Kirwee event. “While site registrations have closed and we have started allocating, those that have registered after allocation will still get a site,” a spokesperson for the organisers said. “However you will be allocated where there are sites left,” they added. “With nearly 500 exhibitors attending and 30,000 visitors expected during SIAFD, you are better to be there than not....,” they commented. Allocation of sites is an in-depth process where exhibitors are put with their appropriate industry section, and the requirements for site power and/or water are taken into account, along with more specific requests on placement. This allocation process is undertaken by a group of volunteers who work well into the night!
Site numbers will begin rolling out from December 10th, beginning with the demo area and exhibitors are asked to be patient as each of them are emailed the necessary information. It is reported that the demo area has been planted out thanks to numerous individuals
and companies who have provided goods and services. This includes many local contractors and businesses. Plans are well underway for the north corner Tractor pull, organised by committee member Chris Watts - definitely something to entertain spectators.
Thirty Six members recently gathered at the home of Club secretary, Cynthia Bishell, for our Christmas get together and we had a whole day without rain, yes truthfully no rain! Cynthia and husband Neville made us most welcome and a tour of the garden before lunch gave us all a good appe te. From the avenue of Lime trees lining the drive, right through to the veggie garden at the rear, this is a truly rural garden with large lawns, big bold beds and imagina ve plan ngs. The courtyard was awash with roses and poppies, obviously liking the sheltered, hot posi on. There was certainly plenty of goodies for lunch and I don’t think anyone went home hungry, or thirsty as a nice selec on of wines and juices were on offer. Club member Dorothy Blanke recited a short poem for us, which was well received. Everyone went home with a plant and I hope, happy memories of another lovely day spent at Garden Club. So, as we close for the year, a big thanks to all the kind folk locally and beyond who have opened up their gardens to us over the year. Thanks to the team at the News for their support and anyone else in the community who has also supported us. We can’t forget our CommiAee, grateful thanks for all your hard work, keep at it ladies, Father Christmas might remember you! Have a great Christmas and a joyful New Year .

On Sunday, December 2nd, The Friends of Darfield Hospital held their successful Christmas Trail fundraiser, despite changeable weather during the lead up to the event. After some early morning drizzle on the day, conditions thankfully remained dry for the period the Trail was held. Fortunately ticket sales increased during the few days leading up the event, and also on the day itself. In all about ninety tickets were sold, and it is expected that about $1,300 will be raised once some costs are met. Those who participated were treated to an excellent ‘Trail’ comprising nine outstanding properties. Of the properties,
four displayed beautiful gardens, two were superbly decorated to reflect the excitement and joy of Christmas, while the remainder offered both delightful gardens and an array of wonderful interior decorations. Included in the ticket price was a welcome afternoon tea provided by members of The Friends. This was held at the Catholic Parish Centre. The Friends of Darfield Hospital wi sh to ex pr e ss t he ir appreciation to all the people who supported the event, and also the nine property owners, for the efforts they made to ensure that their properties were in excellent condition for the event. They also want to

offer their very special thanks to Jo McIntosh, McIntosh of Bayleys Real Estate, who not only offered her property for the Trail, but also agreed to print the tickets and funded valuable advertising. The funds raised will be used to provide extra items for Darfield Hospital which enhance the care, comfort and treatment of the patients. The Friends Team wish all members of our very supportive and generous community, a Merry Christmas and prosperous, Happy New Year. We are most appreciative of the support we receive each year for our fundraisers.

With only a few weeks to Christmas I find myself thinking about the Board’s achievements over the past year. There has been a lot of business, as usual, and whilst this is good, the Board has been looking at ways to improve communication and engagement with communities. As we continue to grow as a District we need to be consistently exploring new avenues to connect with each other. One way of doing so, and a personal highlight of mine, is our on-the-road meetings throughout the year. During 2018 the Board held meetings in Tawera, Greendale, Kirwee and just this past week, Windwhistle. We will continue that next year, with meetings scheduled in Castle Hill, Arthur’s Pass, Hororata and Glentunnel. It’s a wonderful opportunity to hear from communities face to face about how they are getting on. Our recent meeting in Windwhistle was well attended by members of the community.
Concerns raised included roading; the mobile library bus service; war memorial lighting and consents’ issues. Mention was also made of the planting undertaken at the Gorge and the fact that Council appointed a part-time ranger in the Coleridge area working on weekends. The night ended with a shared meal. This was the last Board meeting of the year. While staff continue to work with committees to resolve issues I do want to remind everyone to use the ‘snap, send, solve’ application, or log a helpline request. This ensures that concerns are tracked and is a prompt and efficient way to deal with something. Committees are also encouraged to contact their local Board representative at any time for assistance. The Board celebrated several highlights during 2018. One of these was a successful visit to
China and Japan as part of our Sister Cities Relationships. The Mayor recently noted that these visits open up pathways for the people in Selwyn, to learn about other cultures and share knowledge and expertise. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank all our communities in Malvern for their continued support, but perhaps more importantly for their hard work in creating a better environment for all who live in this beautiful part of the Selwyn District. If you plan to travel for a holiday, come back safely and enjoy your time out from every day busy life. The Board wishes you and your loved ones, a Merry Christmas.

Darfield St John Youth held their annual end of year prize giving on Wednesday 5th December. This was an evening dedicated to showcasing the hard work and commitment of the Cadets throughout the year. All Cadets were recognised during the evening with some walking away with several badges to add to their brassards. Three Cadets; Samuel Ireland, Ireland Rebecca Inch, Inch and Andrew Whear were presented their Grand Prior Badge by Commander of the Order of St John, Mr Tony Blaber. Blaber The Grand Prior Award is the ultimate award of the St John Cadets’ programme, which is said to be one of the best educational youth programmes in New Zealand providing many topics for Cadets to choose from. On offer are thirty different badge topics, but in order to earn the Grand Prior Award a Gold Cadet must complete six compulsory badges, six non-compulsory gold badges and one hundred hours of community service. Although the award is challenging it's also very rewarding and is something many of our young people aspire to obtain. As the highest award, these Cadets have the option to travel to Government House and participate in a ceremony where the Grand Prior parchment is presented by the Prior of St John in New Zealand, The Governor General; making the official presentation of the award also very special. During the evening several trophies were also awarded. 2018 Awards:
Special Awards: Cadet’s Cadet of the Year: Samuel Ireland Emerald Awards: Thomas Campbell, Jessica Ireland. Thomas and Jessica have achieved the highest award the Green Cadets can achieve in their age group, they had to complete three compulsory green badges, and three of their choice, along with fifteen hours of community service. These Cadets are some of the first to be awarded this award in the Mid Canterbury District. Sapphire Awards: Emily Ireland Emily has achieved the highest award the Blue Cadets can achieve in their age group, they had to complete three compulsory blue badges, and three of their choice, along with twenty five hours of community service. She is also one of the first to be awarded this award in the Mid Canterbury District. Community Service Hours: 200 Hours - Susanna Sampson 800 Hours - Elise Ireland 1000 Hours - Hannah Ireland.
1000 Hours of Community Service is the highest number of hours a Cadet can achieve in their time as a Cadet, Hannah spent most of her spare time volunteering with St John, by attending events offering first aid to those in the Malvern and Christchurch Areas. In addition to the awards that the Cadets received, our newly appointed Divisional Manager, Victoria Tomes received her official promotion, replacing Lynda Walter who had been promoted to Area Youth Manager (for Rolleston and Ellesmere area) earlier in the year. Overall, we are proud of all the achievements that these Cadets have received, but it wouldn’t have been able to happen if it wasn’t for the help of all our leaders, so I would just like to acknowledge all their time, work and hard effort that they’ve put into making the programme such a success.

This went well, however this photoshoot did have a sad side to it. Kimberley Kingston the lucky prize winner had intended the shoot prize to be used for photographing her beloved feline friend Lily. The weekend of December, 1st-2nd Kimberley asked if Tess could bring the shoot forward, because Lily had suddenly become very ill, and would need to be put to sleep within a few days. Tess went straight over the next day to photograph her, and it was a bit of a struggle at first as Lily was being quite sassy and refused to pose for the camera, often turning her back on Tess and just sitting there! She wasn't well so coaxing her with food wasn't an option, so they had to go with pure patience and attention. Eventually they got a few good shots with her locked in the bedroom, and then they just let her go her own way, expecting to have to get her out from under a bed. That's when Tess discovered they had a beautiful dog called Oscar, and he was more than happy to have his photograph taken! Although he's seven, he was still very
playful, and Tess thinks he thought the whole event was about him. Eventually Tess went back inside, and Lily had parked herself right in front of a doorway, in a very majestic pose, right in a stream of sunlight. It was a surreal background for her, and there Tess got some lovely shots just there in that moment. So
Kimberley ended up with great photos of two much loved family pets, although there was sadness in the air with Lily's impending departure. “I'm so grateful you drew Kimberley out as the winner, because the timing was fortunate enough that I was able to give her some precious memories of Lily, at no cost to her,” commented Tess.

On Saturday, after seven weeks of play, the Men’s Pennants which is divided into three sections Premier, Senior and Senior Reserve, concluded. Women are permitted to play in both the Senior and Reserve grades of the competition. Winners of the Premier Grade: Darfield 1 Winners of the Senior Grade: West Melton 3 Winners of the Snr Res Grade: West Melton 7 (made up entirely of Women). Women’s Pennants: The Women this year changed their competition schedule holding the event over a shorter period of time playing both morning and afternoon games. It was great to have Oxford ladies back in the event after a few years of not being able to enter due to playing numbers. This event may allow a man to play to make up team numbers, but restrictions do exist. This was certainly Oxford’s come-
back year as they took out the competition in a tight tussle with West Melton. Men’s Development Singles: Qualifying rounds were played on Sunday, December 2nd at both Oxford and West Melton Greens before the final was held on Sunday, December 9th at Darfield Green. Six players qualified for the final that was held in perfect conditions. The final was an exciting and nail biting game to watch between
Les Fickling of Coalgate and Roye Daniel from West Melton. Roy came out the eventual winner. We have to thank all the Green Keepers and their helpers for preparing the green early in the mornings for commencement of play at 8.30am.

The Woodward Cup Promotion / Relegation match was played on Sunday, December 9th at Templeton Golf Club in very warm conditions, the course was in great condition. This year's event matched the highest placed teams in Blank Cup (Clearwater) and Canterbury Central Shield (Hororata), that do not already have a team in Woodward Cup with the tenth placed team in this year's Woodward Cup (Avondale), for their place in the 2019 Woodward Cup competition. The format was gross stableford. Hororata earned the honour of promotion to the 2019 Woodward Cup proving too strong for the other teams, with consistency being the key. Seven out of their eight players finishing with 30 plus stableford points. Hororata finished with 248 points, ahead of Avondale on 241 and Clearwater with 228. Local girls Emily Snowdon and Imogen Thornhill who are both six years old from West Melton School (Kowhai community) competed in the Christchurch School of Gymnastics Christmas Competition on Saturday, December 1st. Both these girls attend the West Melton Gymnastic Club and they had a very successful competition. Emily placed first while Imogen placed second in their age group. This was Emily’s first ever medal she had won and was Imogen’s second medal. These best friends were also two of only a very few gymnasts who received gold ribbon scores on all four apparatus (floor, bar, vault and beam). This was the first time these best friends had competed together so was an extra special day for them. “The West Melton Gymnastic Club were very proud and extremely happy for both girl’s. They performed their routines beautifully. Both Imogen and Emily scored 9 and over on all apparatus with Emily gaining a 9.8 on vault which was amazing,” commented Pam Higgins, Higgins Head Coach from the West Melton Gymnastic Club.

A very young Greendale Senior team travelled to Mandeville to take on a more favoured Ohoka side, last weekend. Winning the toss and batting first, Greendale were travelling along well, Tom Shipley and Zac Foulkes seeing off the home side’s openers with ease. A change of bowlers pulled momentum away from Greendale, with a rush of wickets and tight bowling severely restricting the visitors. A mature and much needed innings of forty runs from Tom, and some power hitting from Michael Hughes at the end, scraped the ‘Dale’ through to a
modest, but potentially defendable, total of 121. The Greendale bowlers were in no mood to muck around, Regan Dalley hitting the stumps with the second and third balls of the Ohoka innings. Man of the Match Ryan Hughes then took charge, his merciless spell of four overs yielding five wickets at a cost of only one run. The final three wickets were claimed by the Bantum Rooster, well supported by some tight bowling at the other end from Zac, and tidy glove work from Greendale debutant Archie Reekie. out in the 15th over, 62 runs short. Post-match celebrations were tempered, with less than half the Greendale side on the day above the legal drinking age! They finally reach a fine stand of trees, Shaun brushes off the first one and stands back with Paddy to look at it. "Well, Paddy, What do you think?"
