By Lucinda Jarvis Selwyn’s Jody McCarthyMcCarthy Dempsey is a year seven student at Darfield High School and she has just broken a thirty three year old best performance high jump record at the athletics Canterbury interclub meet on Saturday, November 10th at the new track, Nga Puna Wai. Jody cleared 1.48m to break the U11 girls record held by K Nelson of 1.47m set back in 1985.

Jody now has her name in the junior record book three times, still owning the U7 discus record of 16.74m and the U8 shot put record of 7.70m.

Jody has been doing athletics since she was six years old and has been competing in interclub competitions for Selwyn since she was seven years old.

Jody’s parents got her into athletics because she loved to play sport but was too young to play a team sport back then.

Jody’s long term goal is to keep enjoying her sports, she also plays netball in the winter, but

she really enjoys playing almost any sport. It was commented that, Jody has a fantastic outlook on life and sport and believes people should never give up, just keep on trying.

As well as Jody holding her three Canterbury records, there is also Maia Broughton from the Club who still holds five Canterbury records in the girls U13, U14, U16 and U17 in the 100m and 200m. The Club also has Neihanna Mata’afa who previously held two Canterbury records in the boys U8 shot put with 9.50m and U9 shot put with 11.12m.

“The club has some high achieving young athletes in it, they all strive to do their best every week with a big smile on their face,” commented Allison McCarthy, McCarthy who is Jody’s mum and Club Captain.

Ashlley explained, “Bloom clients were offered the opportunity to target any skin concerns with a combination of home-care prescriptions and in -salon treatments. We then recorded their journey, with photos, and then with consent, entered the Ultraceuticals’ competition. I submitted three client profiles and was one of only two therapists from Australia and New Zealand selected as finalists in the ‘Ageing’ category.” The result of the competition will be known next week.

Over the past twelve months Ashlley has been on an education journey to gain a better understanding of how the skin works. “I wanted to know why we present with the issues and concerns my clients’ face and how we can really make some positive and lasting changes.”

Gaining this insight has involved spending considerable time on extensive training and education. “I’m not offering ‘hope in a bottle’,” Ashlley smiled. “I take a more holistic approach and dig deeper into what is causing issues, or providing a road block to having healthy skin. There are no quick fixes and it does take time and commitment, but we have been achieving some beautiful results and with word of mouth there have been noticeable increases in clients all wanting to make changes.”

The Castle Hill Station features in the memories of many locals and in the book written by Jenny Abrahamson, Abrahamson with photography

by John O’Malley. The book focuses on the runholders John and Charles Enys who occupied the Station from 1864 until 1891.

Jenny worked at the University of Canterbury library for over twenty years, and has visited the Castle Hill basin all her life. She stays at Enys, a typical homebuilt New Zealand bach on the original site of the Enys brothers’ Trelissick home.

The book documents the lives of John and Charles Enys and records the story of these pioneer sheep farmers from Cornwall who ran Castle Hill Station for more than 25 years.

Extracts from letters by both brothers, and paintings by Charles, that they sent home to their family give a fascinating insight to a lost way of life.

It is, however a particular painting, done by Charles Enys, that Jenny is most interested in locating.

“I’m really hoping someone may have seen this colonial painting (pictured), or be the owner of it,” Jenny said. “It features the Castle Hill station buildings in the 1880s. With Leith Hill behind, the site is three kilometres past the present Castle Hill homestead. “The Enys brothers let out the iconic old stone cottage to contractors never living there themselves,” Jenny reported.

“Charles painted at least three copies of the work - one to send home to family in Cornwall and two to give to friends,” Jenny added. “Australia's National library in Canberra and the Canterbury Museum each hold a copy.

“In 1960 J. Deans owned the third copy, when it featured in a thesis. However it was

incorrectly attributed to R. Park, Park who was a Deans’ family ancestor, but they had died before the building in the painting was finished,” Jenny said.

“Charles Enys didn't sign his paintings, so there may be others, privately owned, which are unknown,” she concluded.

The Honorary Consul of Belgium, Lieve Bierque avidly held the attention of those attending the Armistice Day commemorations at Sheffield on November 11th. Below is the address that so enthralled the crowd: “Ladies and Gentlemen; Thank you for inviting me, it is an honour to represent Belgium here today.

I grew up in the thriving 70’s and 80’s in Antwerp, Belgium, the time of Star Wars, Star Trek, ABBA, Saturday Night Fever, the Vietnam War, the fall of the Berlin wall, the first and the last man on the moon.

It was also the time of listening and sharing memories and stories from WWI and II at gatherings with friends and family in Belgium.

My parent’s generation remember the Second World War. By listening to their stories, we learnt about a period of history that should never be forgotten.

I can vividly remember my grandmother’s stories. Her brother Jan Frans Huys, Huys who was born in 1893, became a Belgian soldier in 1913. In 1914 he was wounded for the first time on the battle fields in the Flanders. When he was well again in 1915 he was sent back to the battle fields. He was injured and hospitalised in 1916

for a second time. When he recovered he was sent again for the third time to the battle fields on the France Belgium border. Eventually on July 22nd, 1918 he was killed in action in a little place called Nieuwedamme/ Nieuwpoort.

We no longer have the opportunity to talk to WWI witnesses, but we can read their stories and visit the silent reminders of war.

During my walks in the weekend I see on the memorials on the promenade in Sumner the names of the Belgian cities where New Zealand servicemen fought, Zeebrugge, Ypres, Messines and Passchendaele.

The many graveyards in Wallonia and the 17 0 graveyards in the Flanders are the resting places of young soldiers who were fighting in WWI and II and never returned home. They are nurturing the Belgian soil.

This sad reality became even more significant when I was travelling in New Zealand in 1992 with Gavin my New Zealand husband. In each little village I saw the memorials of WWI and II, the long list of names but no graveyards.

It is grim to realise that all those young soldiers never came home to fulfil their lives, hopes and dreams.

Belgians have not forgotten their sacrifice.

Every evening at 8 pm since November 11th 1928, the Last Post has been sounded under the imposing memorial arches of the Menin Gate in Belgium.

The only exception to this was during the four years of German occupation of Ypres from May 20th, 1940 to September 6th, 1944.

Instead, the daily ceremony was continued in England at Brookwood military cemetery.

On the very evening that Polish forces liberated Ypres the ceremony was resumed at the Menin Gate, in spite of heavy fighting still going on in parts of the town.

The ceremony was originally intended as an expression of the gratitude of the Belgian people towards those who had died for their freedom and independence and so it remains, even today.

However, in the course of the years the ceremony has also acquired a wider significance.

So when the bugles blow, it is not only the soldiers of the British Empire who are being honoured, but also their comrades from France, Belgium, America and many other allied lands, who likewise ‘stood firm and did not count the cost’.

At the same time, thoughts may also turn to those who fought on the other side of no-man's land: enemies then, but partners now, in a new, united Europe.

In this sense the Last Post not only represents a mirror of our past, but also a beacon of hope for all our futures.

The Belgians have not forgotten and will not forget.”

Play is an important business and the children of Hororata Playcentre have been testing their theories around floating and sinking. More of their favourite activities have included water-play, sandpit, gardening, baking and painting.

Hororata Playcentre is currently assessing the needs of the community and how it can find better ways to meet those needs. The Playcentre committee are calling on the community, whether they have never been to the Centre, or whether it was many years ago, they would still really appreciate a few minutes of time to

complete a brief online survey about them.

Wednesday, November 7th Foster Park indoor courts designdesign - build: The Council approved a design-build approach for the procurement of a lead design and build contractor for the $21 million Foster Park indoor sports project. The facility will incorporate both a multi-court indoor complex and a sports hub featuring changing rooms and storage space which will service the wider outdoor Foster Park playing fields. The facility, which was approved by the Council following Long-Term Plan consultation earlier this year, will incorporate both a multi-court indoor complex and a sports hub featuring changing rooms and storage space which will service the wider outdoor Foster Park playing fields.

Social housing: The Council has adopted a policy position on social housing, and resolved to work alongside social housing providers to support social housing needs in the district. It affirms that Council will not be a direct provider of social housing, as the primary responsibility for social housing sits with central government and community housing providers that can deliver the full range of services needed.

Speed limit bylaw review and speed limit changes: A draft revised speed limit bylaw has been approved for public consultation.

The revised bylaw will ensure the Council meets its legal obligations for setting speed limits, and will bring the bylaw up to date with best practice, NZTA and legal requirements. The Council also approved a range of speed limit

changes for public consultation.

These are mainly around schools, and follow a prior round of speed limit changes in late 2017.

Changes to some 70km/hr zones are also proposed, in line with NZTA guidelines. Consultation on both the bylaw and the speed limit changes will be open until February 2019. The proposed speed limit changes include: Reducing speed limits around school frontages to 40 km/hr.

A variable 40km/hr school zone speed limit on Weedons Ross Road fronting Weedons School and Robinsons Road fronting Broadfield School .

Reducing all 70km/hr limit areas to either 60km/hr or 50km/hr.

Reducing a number of 100km/hr areas to either 80, 60 or 50km/ hr.

Update on Council headquarters extension: At its meeting the Council endorsed updated proposals for the planned extension to its Rolleston headquarters. The original proposal was for an extension of 385m2; the updated proposal achieves a similar outcome with a smaller extension of 125m2, along with reconfiguration of existing office areas to provide more flexible work spaces within the building, and a centralised customer service area. The project, which has a budget of $2.7m, will also include HVAC/air conditioning improvements, along with seismic strengthening of the Council Chambers to achieve the current legislative standard required for a civil defence emergency operations centre.

For those travelling to this weekend’s Courtenay A & P Show in Kirwee, the house on the eastern side of the Kirwee Challenge Service Station (and owned by them) wasn’t always so. For many, many years it was the home of the Kirwee Store.

Back in 1885 Frank Lawrey purchased the Kirwee Store, initially delivering goods by horse drawn cart. His son, John Lawrey later took over the Store (which by now had become an IGA store) and in the photo above his wife, Anne proudly displays their very modern, 1968 Ford transit van.

Strathearn Lawrey (aka Grandad) later acquired this vehicle and has been reconditioning it to get it back on the road and to transport his veges around the community.

“I love that their phone number is a single digit,” said a family spokesperson, “and it’s so cool to see a bit of history being brought back to life.”

Strathearn’s ‘G randa d’s Garden’ vege enterprise is wellknown around the district, especially in West Melton, where he now resides. The produce is freshly dug and sold at the gate, as well as at local markets etc.

Public consultation on the Selwyn District Council’s Draft Parking Strategy has begun.

The draft strategy sets out a number of parking management options for the different parts of the Selwyn district, particularly in larger town centres such as Rolleston and Lincoln. It provides for both private and public parking, and links with the Council’s other transport strategies.

Council Environmental Services Manager Tim Harris said it’s vital that the Council carefully considers how it guides and manages parking in the future.

“We have a diverse and growing district - and with that growth comes the demand to manage parking that works for growing residential communities and an expanding business sector, as well as our rural areas,” Tim added. “This strategy is about ensuring that our parking system provides safe, efficient access to services and

destinations, and allows our townships to thrive.”

Although the Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2009 provides for the issuing of infringement notices, the Council has not gone down this road to date, and has taken an educational approach when people break parking rules. The draft strategy could activate this provision in the bylaw if it’s found that there is a need for it.

“Residents have become accustomed to having no parking enforcement, which is something the Council would prefer to retain,” Tim said.

“Although the draft strategy is about managing the district’s parking in an equitable and coherent way, particularly in our town centres where there is high demand, Council could consider stronger rules, or enforcement, as a way to properly regulate parking in the district, if that’s what residents believe is necessary - they can tell us what they think through

the public consultation phase,” Tim commented.

Other parking management issues considered in the draft strategy include avoiding parking on high-speed rural roads, managing parking across town centres so that parking is within a short distance of destinations, limiting non-residential parking in residential areas, and ensuring on-street parking in busy areas doesn’t compromise other transport networks or access.

The need for the Draft Parking Strategy is a signal of the impact of growth in the Selwyn district.

Over the past ten years the district’s population has grown from 38,000 to more than 62,000 (about 55%), making Selwyn the third largest territorial authority in the South Island.

Alongside this, the economy has grown and use of motor vehicles has increased, with vehicles travelling about 385 million kilometres on Selwyn roads every year.

Dan Lynch Project Manager for Ovis Management said that concern exists about the number of lamb suppliers around the locality who have lambs found with sheep measles at processing.

“These suppliers are dosing their dogs on a regular basis, but despite this it appears the lambs are becoming infected from dogs around the areas they graze. Two farms in the area have, in the last few months, had over three hundred lambs infected.

“Sheep Measles is spread by dogs and it’s easily controlled,” Dan said, “all that’s required is for dogs to be dosed with a tape-wormer pill from the vets.

‘Droncit’ is probably the most well-known, and if dogs are treated on a regular basis the problem goes away quickly,” he added.

Sheep measles does not harm humans, but causes unsightly

cysts in lamb muscle tissue.

Affected ca rcas s es ar e frequently downgraded at slaughter and if infection is severe, carcasses are condemned.

The parasite responsible for the cysts is carried by dogs, with sheep acting as the secondary host.

One dog can shed as many as 250,000 eggs a day in their faeces, so pasture contamination can build up very quickly. Eggs can survive up to six months.

The key points of control Dan emphasised are: freezing, or cooking, any sheep and goat meat fed to dogs; and if dogs are going on, or near, sheep pasture, they should be dosed preferably monthly, or 48 hours prior.

WEED SPRAYING Godfrey Pest Management Limited Pretty much everyone enjoys something for nothing and local animal photographer Tessa Rait is offering just that for a lucky contestant.

Tess is now a local photographer living in West Melton with her fiancé Duncan and his five year old twins. She told the News that she grew up in Christchurch as an only child, raised by her Mother after her Father’s untimely death when she was only six.

“I never really knew my Dad, because he was always in hospital, but his legacy has been a big part of my life,” Tessa said. “Some of you may remember the Rait amplifier produced in the 70’s. Certainly I've encountered many people who knew of him or his work, and it is still highly regarded today,” she added. “He was a very clever entrepreneur, and the legacy of his success is something that inspires me to do the same through my own work,” Tessa commented.

Photography for Tessa, began as a creative hobby, but she very soon realised it was something she was really

passionate about.

“In my 30’s I lost my Mother very suddenly, and decided life was too short to spend your 9 to 5's working in a job that doesn't bring you joy. So I left my corporate career to study photography full time. Fast forward to now, and I am building my photography business from home here in West Melton.”

Tess had always enjoyed photographing landscapes, and often drove out to the country to capture them adding that she has had dozens of them used to accompany the weather segment of Television's One News over the years.

“Earlier this year, Duncan and I decided to take the leap and purchase a house together in West Melton for a change of lifestyle,” Tessa explained. “The community here is fantastic, and the country life is lovely,” she enthused. “I have so many opportunities to photograph nature so easily on my doorstep, it's the best move we ever made!”

Tessa has two fox terriers, Oscar, 14 and Bella, 2, which

she describes as very cheeky.

“I started photographing them at home, and realised I loved the engagement, and being able to capture their personalities on camera. I knew I wanted to assist others explore the connection they have with their animals, so decided to start looking for ways to explore animal photography,” she said.

Oscar and Bella go to doggy daycare regularly, and Tessa naturally became friends with the facility’s owner.

“Unfortunately she has Multiple Sclerosis, and needed to raise funds to travel to Russia for life changing treatment,” Tessa reported. “I offered her my time to take photos of her client's dogs, then made the prints available for sale, with all proceeds going towards her trip.

“This proved very popular - we raised a lot of money, and I c o nf ir m e d my l ov e o f photographing animals. Keryn is in Russia right now, and I'm so proud that I could use my skills and passion to help her get there,” Tessa ended.

Jane Jenkins and her team at ‘Floridale Angus’ had great success at the recent Canterbury A & P Show. They were placed second in the Meat and Wool Cup with a two year old cow called Floridale Julia and her calf. In the All Breeds Class which was judged by an Australian judge, they won the senior cow and calf class, the two year old cow and calf class, the yearling bull class and the yearling pairs class.

The Malvern Branch of the NZ Deerstalkers Association (NZDA) recently hosted the Ashburton, Rakaia and North Canterbury NZDA branches to their inaugural Running Boar Shoot competition held at the Darfield Shooting Centre. The Running Boar shoot consists of shooting at a moving silhouette target at a range of fifty metres. The target runs across a gap of ten metres and can only be viewed

for five seconds at slow, or 2.5 seconds at fast speed.

The first team member from Rakaia got off to an excellent start leaving Malvern’s team thinking they were in for a hiding, but by the end of the first discipline Malvern were leading. A break for a barbecue lunch and the visitors, with renewed confidence, resumed at the fast speed. It was here the young guns from Ashburton

took the lead with an excellent team effort.

Prize giving saw Ashburton finish in first place, Malvern in second and Rakaia at third.

Best overall individual was Hayd en B re akw e ll from Ashburton.

It was a quiet day on the range on November 17th.

Man y members gave themselves a weekend off following the Canterbury Spring Meeting. It was a fine, warm day with a light but tricky wind. Some shooters were testing loads so did not complete the two rounds of shooting.

Allan White again showed why he is one of New Zealand’s top target rifle shooters with great scores.

Daniel Alexander showed he hasn’t forgotten his FTR shooting skills with a competitive score on a new rifle that’s being run in.

There was fun in abundance at Sunday’s Darfield Pool Party - so much so in fact, that organisers were run off their feet and few photos were able to be taken!

The event was described as being hugely successful with a good attendance who enjoyed not only the Pools, but also the large inflatable toy there especially for the day.

The promised horrendous weather delayed its appearance until the Pool Party was over, resulting in those attending making the most of the sunny, warm conditions with little, or no wind.

A sausage sizzle is always a favourite and this one was no exception with them disappearing as fast as they could be cooked!

“It was definitely a good time had by all,” concluded one of the event’s organisers, Christina Clarkson.

The leader of the vegetarian society just couldn’t control himself anymore.

He just needed to try some pork, just to see what it tasted like. So one summer day he told his members he was going on a vaca+on.

He packed out of town, and headed to the nearest restaurant. AOer si,ng down, he ordered a roasted pig, and impa+ently waited for his delicacy. AOer just a few minutes, he heard someone call his name, and to his great chagrin he saw one of his fellow members walking towards him. Just at that same moment, the waiter walked over, with a huge plaQer, holding a full roasted pig with an apple in it’s mouth. “Isn’t that something,” says the leader aOer only a moments pause, “all I do is order an apple, and look what it comes with!”
