By Lucinda Jarvis. Sophie Townsend is a sixteen year old student at Darfield High School, and a local show jumping rider based here in Darfield, Canterbury. She has had many International and National results throughout the recent years of 2015/18. Sophie is becoming very well known for the consistent and strong show jumping performances that she is currently doing, covering many height classes within the show jumping discipline. Sophie has represented New Zealand in Mexico at the tender age of fourteen in the 2016 FEI
Children’s International Final, becoming the most successful foreign rider over the four days of competition, which was an outstanding achievement. She is a strong contender in the Junior Rider classes in New Zealand, with ambitions to have future success at Young Rider, Mini Prix and later on Grand Prix level. Sophie has recently been selected for New Zealand in the Junior Rider Team representing Equestrian Sports New Zealand (ESNZ), in the CSIJ-B event as part of The Princess Cup (show jumping) being held at The Royal Horse Guard, in Bangkok,

Denise Dixey and Julie Sergeant are bringing back the Methven High Country Fete for the third year! “Methven is the perfect location
for this type of event,” Julie said, “our unique venue at Methven Racecourse has stunning views and it is so easy to get here,” Julie added. “We timed the Methven High Country Fete on a Wednesday, so that people can enjoy a midweek break, or make a long weekend of it to experience all that Methven has to offer; there’s plenty of accommodation available locally, and with Christmas just around the corner it’s the perfect time to shop,” Julie explained. Whilst welcoming back many of its original stallholders, there are fabulous new vendors coming onboard this year from all over New Zealand, making

This year, joined by other like-minded stall holders, they went all out, to not only provide a shopping experience for the community and family fun, but also to raise funds for a very, very worthwhile cause - the Malvern Cancer Support Group. The event raised just under $2,000 after expenses, from stall fees, donations on the day and a raffle. To be added to this figure is the Malvern Cancer Support Group’s own funds raised from Devonshire Teas and a sausage sizzle - they were assisted by the Malvern Rural Women in these enterprises also. Around twenty five stalls set themselves up on the day and all were well patronised, along with a variety of outdoor entertainment for both young and old. Many attended to give their support to the Malvern Cancer Support Group and a large number of helpers and volunteers also added to the day’s success. It was reported that the stalls present offered quality products for purchase and that there was a good mix of local talent, along with some popular well established others.

Many residents of the district will recall that last year The Friends of the Hospital held a highly successful Open Afternoon to celebrate the hospital’s ninetieth year of service. This year’s Christmas Trail features six homes which have been decorated beautifully to foster plenty of Christmas Spirit, and also four delightful gardens. Brian Davidson, Davidson The Friends Chairperson said, “that the funds raised from the event will be used to provide valuable extra items for the hospital which enhance the care,
patients.” He stated also that the hospital remains a very valuable community asset, and The friends welcome the support of our community for fundraisers such as this latest one. The trial will be open from late morning till late afternoon, ticket prices include afternoon tea, which will be available at the Catholic Centre on the corner of Cardale Street and Telegraph Road from 1:30pm onwards. By Lucinda Jarvis. competitions at the Golden experiences from this wonderful Local Darfield High School student, Katherine Hadler has been selected as part of a two rider New Zealand Pony Club Association (NZPCA) team to represent New Zealand in China. Katherine, her team mate Esme Morgan from Tauhara Pony Club and their Manager/Coach Emma Barker will leave New Zealand on November, 20th where they will then spend a week in China competing against riders from other countries. These riders will compete on borrowed horses in show jumping
Saddle Equestrian Centre. These riders will only have a short time to get to know the horses they will be competing on, this can prove to be a challenge as there will be limited time to form a relatio nship with thes e borrowed horses and for the riders to work out what each horse is capable of but this is also a great opportunity for riders to learn to adapt their riding skills to new horses quickly. These riders will gain great new skills and

opportunity and they will also get to meet lots of new people and make new friends along the way. Katherine and her family have a long equestrian back ground with a lot of her family having been involved with the equestrian sport in one way or another. Katherine started riding when she was almost five, when she got her first pony, named ‘Charisma’, she soon joined Springston Pony Club and has been an active pony club member there ever since. Katherine thoroughly enjoys show jumping, eventing and dressage on her two ponies ‘Shara’ and ‘Pavlova’. She competes as an individual and in team competitions across the South Island. Katherine’s long term goal is to one day hopefully ride at the Olympics and in the short term her goal is to be selected for as many area and national teams as possible.

218 Horndon Street, Darfield By Hugh Paterson. The New Zealand Prime Minister William Massey notified the country that WW1 was over at 9am on Tuesday, November, 12th. He had been informed the prior night. The nation was informed by means of ‘copper wire’ as people would now say, so the first places to receive the news were the post offices. In the main centres the signal that the peace had been signed was the firing of heavy guns. The news was greeted with wild excitement, sirens sounded, church bells rang, crowds gathered in streets, singing, shouting and making as much noise as possible. Some well
prepared centres organised spontaneous precessions. Schools were closed, offices shut and work places closed for the day. There had been some confusion for various countries had surrendered before the armistice, with Germany was signed. The Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungarian Empire had surrendered earlier, though parts of the Ottoman Empire continued fighting. Casualty lists still appeared in the New Zealand press after the armistice. A further complication for the celebrations was the presence of the Spanish Flea Pandemic. It was raging through the country
causing 9,000 deaths between July and the end of November. As a result large indoor official celebrations were cancelled. Such events were not held until mid, 1919. Still it did not stop spontaneous celebrations throughout the country. There will be throughout the country a variety of remembrance events on Sunday, November 11th at 11am to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, some as simple as two minutes silence at a cenotaph or prayers in church service to the more elaborate event that the Waddington Sheffield Committee are staging. People should all look long and hard at these memorials and remember the cost of war.

In spite of a typical November nor ’wester last Sunday, November 4th, nearly a hundred enthusiastic visitors including children enjoyed the last opportunity to see Terrace Station’s garden this spring. Lilac and rhododendrons along with multi-hued aquilegias and foxgloves provided brilliant spring colours along with other early summer flowers. Picnic goers managed to find sheltered corners to relax on the lawns. The old farm tools in the summer house were a great talking point with some discussion about their uses. Many books were sold and the children’s free books were eagerly snapped up. Apart from having to anchor down the leaflets and keep some of the plants on the verandah, Kate

The Malvern Cantamaths Competition was held on Wednesday, October 31st, at Glentunnel School. This was the second year this event has been held following a successful inaugural event last year. Students worked together in teams of four to solve mathematical problems in a fun but intense atmosphere. There were teams entered from each of the eight Primary Schools in Malvern area. Teams were made up of Year five and six students. They had thirty minutes to solve as many of the twenty problems as possible. “It once again proved to be an exciting and thrilling experience for all the competitors. Well done to the teams who made the podium this year!,” commented Dion Stechmann, Stechmann Principal from Glentunnel School.

To the Editors: I reply to Will Appelbe the SAFE Campaign Manager’s letter, October 19th. I nearly didn’t reply to this letter; then it got the better of me. If ordinary everyday people of NZ don’t start questioning some of these activist groups with their extreme views, then after a while their extreme views start to sound normal. I would like to ask Mr Appelbe and SAFE a couple of questions; firstly if you do get your way and manage to stop rodeo what would SAFE suggest be done with the hundreds of animals whose lives are reliant on rodeo? The bulls, the horses that participate in the event and all of the competitors’ horses from the barrel racing to the roping horses - without the sport most of these animals would have no homes. The second question is, rodeo is obviously at the top of SAFE’S list to try and ban - can you
please tell the people of NZ what other sports and forms of recreation does SAFE intend to try and stop? Does that include horse racing, show jumping, eventing, polo, endurance riding, hunting, pig hunting with dogs, and fishing?

Recently the Darfield Bridge Club held its annual, spring charity, tournament at the Darfield Recreation Centre. The tournament was well supported with nearly ninety bridge players attending from throughout the Canterbury region. The tournament was a success and enjoyed by all, plus the Club raised $1,000 to support a local charity. This year the Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade was selected as the recipient in recognition of the work they undertake on behalf of the community.
The Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade is a welcome presence at the Courtenay A & P Show bringing with them not only trained personnel and equipment, but also a raft of important information and demonstrations. Their engines are a constant source of interest for younger Showgoers, while older attendees can gain valuable tips on fire prevention and safety. The Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade is currently ramping up its efforts to secure a 4WD drive rapid response vehicle, commenting that being limited to large fire trucks is slowing down its ability to respond to emergencies in tough terrain. Chief Fire Officer Stuart Jones added that the Brigade is often called out in deep snow, high winds, or to areas accessible only on unsealed roads. “Taking the big fire appliances around those tracks is pretty

challenging, we’re damaging the trucks, smashing mirrors off, that sort of thing, just to get around and up these long and tree lined drives,” Stuart said. “If we had a rapid response vehicle we could use that to locate the scene of the emergency and to scout out a safe access, before we bring in any heavy equipment. It would also allow us to get CPR into medical emergencies much faster, as we don’t have to gather a four-person crew for the big appliance,” he explained. Stuart who owns the Kirwee Challenge Service Station is utilising the My Challenge rewards’ programme toward the Brigade’s achievement of its goal. Challenge customers at Kirwee have the ability to choose to donate their My Challenge fuel discount to the Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade. “Our Challenge stations are all
locally owned and employ local staff, so we really wanted to give each station a way to fuel projects that will really make a difference in their own communities,” said Challenge’s Marketing Manager Cathy Cottle. Cottle Stuart added that the Challenge initiative has made it much easier for more people to get involved. “We’ve been doing raffles down at the Hotel, the usual stuff, but now we’re seeing a much wider section of our village community able to donate because it’s so simple,” he said. Stuart estimates the vehicle plus a locker box for equipment will cost approximately $50,000 and they’ve raised around $30,000 of that over the last year. He’s hoping the Challenge initiative will get them over the goal line. “My self and two employees at Kirwee Challenge are also Brigade volunteers. When there’s an emergency we need four crew on an appliance, so as soon as a call comes in, we down tools, I shut up the workshop and we all head off,” Stuart reported. “Our medical calls are always pretty serious, these are not cuts or scratches, we have people falling off horses, cardiac arrests, that sort of thing. The nearest St John is Darfield and they’re volunteers too. For us to get to these situations more quickly would really make a difference to those people’s chances.”

Jane has continued the family tradition of being Show President following her father (H.E H.E Jenkins), Jenkins uncle (W.K W.K Jenkins) Jenkins grandfather (M.E M.E Jenkins) Jenkins and great grandfather (W.J W.J Jenkins) Jenkins in 1903. Farming on various properties in the district of mainly mixed cropping and sheep with her father Harley starting an Angus Stud in 1954, which has fairly much been dispersed with the sale of farms. Jane still has the stud comprising of ten cows. As a child she has fond memories of
unled lambs running astray at judging and in the grand parade. She rode ponies in the ‘C’ ring until she went to high school and helped her grandfather (M.E Jenkins) and Aunty Beulah with their led ponies. They would bring two truck loads to the local shows. Jane entered her artwork that she did for Courtenay School but never got a prize. Her father always exhibited cattle but rarely did he even have them broken to lead. He used to get young stock agents to lead them and Jane thinks it doubled up as ring entertainment. Jane said, “One occasion, I’m guessing thirty years ago. The grand parade was about to start, I had been in the bar and
shoes so proceeded in my new red boat shoes. Well the bull took off much to the delight of the crowd, my shoe got ripped and went flying in the air and the bull ended up eating grass behind the Pipe Band. No one was hurt but I still get reminded of that occasion.” Jane has three children Ruby (24), Jack (22) and Tim (19) who all in the past have led their own pet lambs and sheep. At an early age they all helped and continue to help with exhibiting cattle at A & P Shows. They have all had success with young handler leading classes and the National Beef Expo Steak Competition.

A big ‘shindig’ is planned at the Kirwee Hotel, (referred by its publican Steve Evans as ‘The Wee’) on the night of the Courtenay A & P Show. For the second time this will be a ticketonly-entry event with limited numbers. “Show night is an important event for the community, as many locals and ex-locals from near and far get together to have a good catch up and it brings people of all ages together,” Steve commented. Steve and son George, George along with Steve's partner Celia, Celia will attend the Show as spectators, before the night in ‘The Wee’

...continued from page 9. Floridale Angus Stud has always been a family affair with bull sales and A & P Shows. Along with Jane’s children, her nieces, nephews and cousins have all contributed with exhibiting as well as several local teenagers. Jane encourages the youth and sees the friendships they make, attention to showing detail and knowledge they learn or something that they all achieve by being up close with beef cattle. In alignment with most A & P Shows in Canterbury, due to the Mycoplasma Bovis in New Zealand, unfortunately there will not be any cattle at the Show this year. There will still be a pet calf competition which will be judged and videoed at home and the video will be shown at the Show. On Show day the President and two Vice Presidents (senior and junior) and their partners walk around and meet judges and view all of the Show. The Vice President (senior) is Wendy Chamberlain who is Jane’s sister. (maybe the first time in New Zealand to have two sisters in that posit ion). T he camaraderie for the A & P movement is very much alive with exhibitors and officials all

Also new this year, for children, is the ‘Pet Rock’ class imagination and artistic ability can run wild; just how much personality can be put into a pet rock? As far as spectator sports go - it would be hard to beat the terrier racing. Fun to watch and fun to enter - it’s hoped all the local contenders have completed their pre-race training in preparation. There’s over $20,000 in prizes to be won at the Courtenay A & P Show, as well as 66 trophies. The first ever Courtenay A & P Show was in fact held at Courtenay in a farmer’s

Sharon Kellock, the show’s secretary does an amazing job organising the Show and committee. The committee members will also be having a slice bake-off. The slices will be entered in the Baking section at the Show. The theme for the Show this year is ‘Community’. The community is the Courtenay Show district, everyone is part of that community, urban and rural. “We all need to take ownership and contribute to be part of our community. So by attending the Show, I trust everyone will feel part of our community,” commented Jane.
A new local community group is the Kirwee Trappers, a national organised group formed to kill rats and mustelids (weasels, stoats and ferrets), “let’s look after our native birds and hens,” Jane said. The Arion Farm with young farm animals for petting is always a popular interactive attraction for children. Entertainment will be provided by Shad Rutherford and Lolytwist (a local Darfield performer). There will also be the entertaining terrier race, speed shearing, wood chopping, fire engine and ambulance displays. While people are in the Darfield High School luncheon room they can check out the children's quilt competition that will be on display. Jane wishes everyone a successful 2018 Courtenay A & P Show.

He was also responsible for the system of water races in this area and his name lives on, on the memorial in the Kirwee township. Some years after this first Show, land on the edge of Kirwee was
acquired, and the Show found its permanent home. The Kirwee Community Hall was the original Produce Shed, complete with dirt floor (obviously greatly improved nowadays!). Both the Kirwee Hall and the Showgrounds are still privately owned and run by the Courtenay A & P Association.

Courtenay Show: A welcome opportunity to focus on the positive! After recent events in New Zealand politics and international events such as the disappearance of a journalist at a foreign embassy, one could be forgiven for despairing at the state of the world. However, the upcoming Courtenay Show with its theme of community will provide a refreshing opportunity to reflect on more positive things. The Courtenay A & P Show has being going strong for 143 years and represents a great opportunity for people from the area to catch up with friends, family members and neighbours. As Kirwee is not too far from Christchurch, it is also a good chance for ‘townies’ to experience the atmosphere of a community-based A & P Show. The growing diversity in our

It is at the start of a summer season full of great events right across our district, some which are new, and others like the Show with a long history and strong local roots. Also new this year will be the 'quilt' competition display which has been judged already. Local Primary and Pre-School classes were invited to make a 2m x 1m quilt using paper and/or fabric, covering a topic they have been studying. The winning class (Annabel’s Educare three year olds) and their teacher will all be awarded a free adult gate pass (children are free, so they can bring a parent/care-giver), an ice cream, and a ride on Sturgeons amusements. All of the entries will be on display in the luncheon room at the end of the Hall. Entries for the indoor 'Produce Shed' Sections have been steadily increasing over recent years making the Hall which houses them rather cramped. The Quilt Section (not to be confused with the Primary and Pre-school competition quilts) is already housed on the stage, where they make a colourful

“My role as Produce Shed Convenor is to organise a meeting early in the year with section heads to find judges and iron out any difficulties that may have occurred at the previous Show,” outlined convenor of the Produce Shed, David Stott. Stott “I am lucky to have a band of well organised helpers who make this job run very smoothly,” he added. David lives in Kirwee with his wife Isabell, Isabell having been mixed cropping, and chicken farmers before that. He sees the future of the Produce Shed entries as being in a healthy state, noting that many younger folk are now coming forward to take part in the proud tradition of the local Show. “They must be encouraged,”

David stressed. Exhibitors in the Produce Shed present their efforts in a wide variety of sections; sewing, baking, flowers, vegetables, quilting, floral art, knitting, photography, eggs and preserves, along with art and wine making. Entries, many of which come from repeat entrants, are submitted in response to Show secretary Sharon Kellock’s distribution of schedules, advertising and online. “Nowadays,” David commented, “a lot of the entering is done on line - which makes it very efficient for all concerned.” On show day marshals in the Produce Shed can help put up to 900 entries into the right classes for judging. “This year we have held some inaugural training sessions for flower and vegetable exhibitors, run by previous judges. This is intended to help promote the Produce Shed and give competitors a better understanding of exactly what judges are looking for,” David reported. “Also this year there is a new class to promote the Show for Preschool and Primary School paper-quilts. These have all been pre-judged and are on display in the supper room to look at while having a PTA lunch,” David added. Another new class this year is that for children’s Pet Rocks an opportunity to display creativity and imagination and
definitely a great class for Showgoers to seek out and view. “This Show will see the Schools’ displays moved to an exhibition tent so as to give us much needed extra space in the Hall to better display our excellent entries. It’s a win-win for all concerned,” David smiled. The fabric quilts, making a colourful exhibit on the Hall’s stage have a viewers’ choice competition for Showgoers to vote on. “There is a prize for the Quilt with the most votes too,” David commented. “The A & P Committee is of great support in assisting with the assembly, and the dismantling, of furniture etc in the Hall in preparation for exhibitors on the Tuesday prior to Show day and again on the Sunday after the event. “I am a third generation exShow President and will have my grandson Toby working as an assistant in the cooking classes,” David concluded proudly.

“however both she and the committee felt it was the correct approach. “We will have cattle exhibited at the Show, but only belonging to one breeder,” Sharon said. “These will be used by entrants in the 'Young Handler' classes and we hope to attract as many younger folk as we can to enter these. So yes there will still be cattle able to be viewed at the Show,” she ended.

“As the sheep convenor at the Courtenay show, my role is to make sure everything is organised for the section,” said Courtenay A & P Show Sheep Convenor, Warwick Seaton. Seaton “We have a sheep committee meeting in June to get all the judges and stewards sorted out for Show day, along with sorting out sponsorship and anything else pressing that needs attention,” he added. Warwick farms just out of Kirwee with his brother Ashley on a mixed farm, fattening lambs, cattle and cropping, plus their Suffolk sheep stud. Warwick has been involved with the Show all his life, beginning with entering his pet lambs, before taking on the stewarding role in the sheep section for a few years. “I joined the Courtenay A & P committee when my Dad died in 2008 and I took over as sheep convenor from my brother Ashley four years ago when he moved into the Junior Vice President’s role,” Warwick

explained. “The sheep section usually attracts around 130 plus entries. They are mainly repeat entrants, but we do get the odd new one too,” he said. Keeping entry numbers up is very much a networking exercise. “The Show President will often put out the call to a few potential exhibitors and I get on the phone to one or two local farmers. I also try to attract a ‘Gift Lamb’ entry which really assists with the Show’s earnings,” Warwick added. “This year the Corriedale breed is a feature breed and we are hopeful it will bring a few more entries in. On Show day itself my job is making sure everything runs smoothly and all the judges and stewards have what they need etc. There are about six of us on the sheep committee and we all lend a hand on Show day which helps to keep everything running smoothly,” he said. “The week before the Show we
attend a couple of working bees to get all the pens set up, we erect the marquees and deal with anything else that needs doing around the Showgrounds,” Warwick said. “On the Monday following the Show we have a clean-up working bee which we generally get a pretty good turnout from the rest of the committee so that all makes the job a bit easier,” he commented. “I think the future of the Show is looking pretty good, as long as we can keep attracting young people onto the committee and with them, their innovative ideas,” Warwick smiled.

Max Millan started her wee business following the increasing demand from the family for yummy, additive free, goodies. The business, named ‘Greenz’ will be onsite with a stand at the Courtenay A & P Show for visitors to see just what they’re all about. “The flavours and range of my products have evolved from the things that we like to eat and I have worked hard to make these same products available to my customers,” Max explained. “We live on a lifestyle block in Swannanoa and love to grow as much as possible of the fru i t an d h e rb s u s ed, ourselves. It’s a busy place with children, dogs, cats, pigs and chickens, so between them all nothing gets wasted. We are very ‘green New Zealand’ focussed and so my business name of Greenz was the natural

Alan Gray and Bryan Dunlop have both lived in West Melton, for the past seven years and have recently had huge success with their Black Pekin Bantam Rooster, ‘Ronaldo.’ He has won Supreme Animal at Ellesmere A&P along with Champion Bantam, Best Fancy Bantam and Supreme Poultry Exhibit. ‘Ronaldo’ is no stranger to success having won numerous Best Pekin in Show and Best Fancy Bantam in Show awards at the Winter Poultry Shows throughout the South Island and last year won the New Zealand title at the New Zealand National Show for Best Black Pekin and he also took out Best Pekin in Show at the Nationals. Alan who turns 91 in a couple of weeks was thrilled with the big Ellesmere win and said, “you are never to old to reach the dream of winning Supreme in Show at an A&P show.” Alan
the Courtenay A&P which is their local show. “It’s a really lovely country show,” Bryan commented. They have donated some rosettes and a couple of trophies for the Poultry section at the show this year. Alan and Bryan have always had poultry and Bryan used to show back in the 70's and 80's and Alan’s Dad showed back in the 20's and 30's, and when time allowed Bryan started showing again a few years ago. Alan and Bryan love all the shows but enjoy catching up with friends at the A & P Shows as they have friends that show other animals. Bryan used to show horses for a long time and this year they have a pony going to the Canterbury A & P Show, that is being prepared by the Mullen's at Wembleybrook Sport Horses. The next goal, for Bryan and Alan would be to try and win a National title again at the New
next winter. There is preparation required to prepare poultry for a show. Alan and Bryan shampoo the Bantams before each show, trim their toe nails and beaks, as well as oil the combs and legs. “Preparation is a big thing if you want them to look good, as is their diet which helps make them bloom at the right time,” concluded Bryan.

Greymouth’s Margaret and Tony Woollett will bring their barbed wire art products to this year’s Courtenay A & P Show, for the very first time. Their business (Tony’s Rustic Garden Art) will set up their trade site at the Show with a range of unique and individual creations. The couple will stay in Kirwee with good friends Jenny and Terry Gallagher - so no early morning drive over the Pass for this pair! The couple have an outdoor stall, so will erect a gazebo to house their display, but nevertheless like all stall holders, hope the day is fine. Margaret and Tony love meeting people at the shows or market days they attend and chatting with them about their products and how they’re produced.
They’ve enjoyed attending the Ag Fest in Greymouth (a very large event) and have also put an appearance in at several ‘Art in the Park’ shows and the fundraising Multiple Sclerosis Fairs. Tony’s distinctive and unusual creations are mostly made of barbed wire and anything else he can recycle, for example old fencing standards. His works often include balls of all sizes, along with kiwis, pukekos, white herons and sculptures. “He also makes beautiful bird feeders and has some wood carving pieces as well,” Margaret reported. Tony’s passion for creating oneoff pieces of art began when he undertook a Polytech carving course. He then branched out to barbed wire works and has
filled his and Margaret’s garden with a collection of distinctive pieces. The garden is quite a feature in Greymouth and is open to the public for viewing at the weekends. While the couple are looking forward to meeting and chatting with Showgoers they are both also hopeful they’ll get the chance to look around the Show and see everything it has to offer.
‘Happy Fingers’ Christmas Craft Stall is owned and run by Pam Duncan and this will be her sixth year in attendance at the Courtenay Show. “I have had a stall at the Show for many years now and really look forward to it each time. A & P shows have always been a big part of my life and I really get a buzz from them,” Pam said. Pam and husband Alister had resided in Darfield prior to relocating to the Summerset Village in Wigram eighteen months ago. They love the lifestyle there with all the activities going on in the village and Pam gets to spend her spare time on her craft work and sewing. She produces a lot of the Christmas themed stock for her Show stand herself and thoroughly enjoys the hobby of doing so. Pam will be selling a
range of products, including Christmas trees of varying sizes, lovely Santa stockings, Advent calendars, tooth fairies, reindeer food, and a whole variety of other, bound-toappeal, bits and bobs. “One of the most popular items,” Pam said, “are the activity aprons with a collection of surprises in the pockets.” She’s obviously hoping for a fine day this year and confesses that rain could damage her beautiful products and tends to keep the numbers attending down too. “I thoroughly enjoy meeting and chatting with people at the
Show,” Pam commented. Pam will be on hand to assist customers with purchase selections for the duration of the Show - be sure to check out the amazing stock she has, in the run-up to Christmas.

WEED SPRAYING Godfrey Pest Management Limited Without a doubt Shows are entertaining and competitive, they’re also exhausting - a sit down for lunch is often just what’s needed. For over thirty years the Darfield High School PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) have been attending the Courtenay A & P Show to make and sell lunches, as well as provide morning and afternoon teas for the Show judges and committee. “There is actually a ‘Courtenay Show Bible’ that gets handed down to the new PTSA committee members when the old ones depart,” smiled Rhonda Hamilton-Cross, chairperson DHS PTSA. “This ‘Bible’ has been tweaked as people have seen necessary over the years to accommodate such things as food allergy requirements and becoming more environmentally friendly. Having this ‘Bible’ passed down year after year has made the PTSA team run like a well-oiled machine for the Courtenay A & P Show preparation, as well as on the day.” A huge amount of organising goes into this day; months before it actually takes place. The team in charge begin ordering packaging, compiling food lists and getting notes out to all parents for contributions. They ask for donated items, or home baking, and work with what is in season. “Strawberries may be off the list this year,” Rhonda laughed. “We also ask for assistance
either at the School’s food room, or at the Show itself.” The day before the Show everything that has been donated is collected and checked, before a final shopping purchase is done. “This ensures everything is fresh and ready to go,” Rhonda explained. The team make numerous trips to the Show grounds to make certain everything is set up and ready to go for the big day. A group of up to fifteen people rotate preparing food at the School food room from 6.30am beginning with the first of the morning tea packs (baking, fruit, sandwiches, fruit salad plus tea/coffee). These arrive at the Show no later than 8:45am, with lunches following, and on site by 11am. The final preparations for the President’s afternoon tea then get underway to be delivered to the Showgrounds by 1pm. While the on-site team at the Show are also incredibly busy and then have to go into cleanup mode when everyone has been fed and watered, so it is for the School team too. Everywhere has to be left shipshape in preparation for Monday’s classes. This fundraising venture is incredibly beneficial to the DHS PTSA as it raises approximately two thousand dollars after expenses. “Perhaps the most important thing is that Darfield High School is seen in
the community,” Rhonda commented. “This year we also catered for the Malvern Lions change-over, the Darfield Fire Brigade 25 year awards supper and will also provide food for another Darfield Awards evening that is coming up. It’s good to see the High School involved in the community,” Rhonda added. Despite being a mammoth day the Darfield High School PTSA always appreciate the fundraising that this brings them. It allows them to put any money raised back into the School to benefit both current and future pupils. “We look forward to your support either by helping out if you are a parent of a child, or children, at the School, or by the purchase of food at the Show,” Rhonda said. “We sincerely wish the Courtenay A & P Association every success for their day,” Rhonda concluded.

It’s that time of year again for School Pet Days and Windwhistle School is no exception. A fortunate break in the weather on Friday, October 26th saw the School’s fun pet day take place. There were lambs, dogs, cats, a rabbit, and a pony on show, along with decorated Spring hats, sand saucers, Lego creations,
pikelets, decorated cupcakes and vegetable animals. The judges had a hard job awarding the placings - in fact it took them all afternoon, it was reported! Also not to be forgotten was the annual Windwhistle gumboot throwing competition and the lamb drinking competition! “A huge thanks to the children,
parents and judges for making it a successful day for all involved,” said Windwhistle School principal, Bronwen Seaward. Seaward “A special mention to Jane McMillan for all her hard work in preparing another amazing Windwhistle Pet Day,” she concluded.

With the sun shining, the families of Kirwee Model School headed to school on the morning of Friday, November 2nd for their annual pets day. There was plenty to look at with a variety of creations on display inside, from vegetable sculptures to recycled material
models. The animals outside certainly kept the crowds entertained. There was a vast range of animals, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, ducks, chickens, fish, lambs, and horses. The children shared their wonderful knowledge with the judges and the horses
strutted their stuff before prizes were awarded. Animals paraded throughout the day, adorned in a variety of clever costumes. The Friends of Kirwee Model School held their annual cake auction with the help of auctioneer, Ben Lill. Lill The cakes were amazing and purchasers were spoilt for choice with cakes fetching premium prices. The auction raised a whopping $2750 and the Friends of Kirwee Model School were extremely grateful to everyone involved. The smiles on tired little faces as families lugged their animals home told the story of a fun-filled day, a highlight for many!

Our first ou+ng of the Summer season was to the Geraldine area and what a great day we had. The weather was scorching, but shade was found in the gardens we visited. Our first stop was at the home and garden of the talented James who makes the garden accessories, ‘pole people’. You will have seen them in gardens all over and he explained he designs and makes them, along with dogs, hedgehogs and structures to resemble plants and trees. The garden was stunning, looking wonderful with all the Spring flowers and Liz kindly provided morning tea in the garden. ACer lunch and a spot of retail therapy in Geraldine we headed to Mount Somers to visit Lilyfields, the garden of David and Wendy Millichamp, where again we were made most welcome. Wendy obviously loves her garden and her passion was evident in the way she spoke of the plants. She is very keen on Tulips and had some amazing varie+es in wonderful colours. The garden was a true country garden, full of Spring flowers and some pre8y amazing trees, especially the Maples. Plants were for sale which is always a bonus and we came away clutching all the goodies we had bought. So a great start to the ou+ng season with more to come over the following months. I would like to men+on Garden Club’s exhibit at the recent Na+onal Daffodil show held at the Recrea+on Centre and thanks to all the kind folks for their posi+ve and welcome comments. The team worked hard in the planning and staging process, but we had a ball doing so, thoroughly enjoyed it. Working alongside us were Sheffield Garden Club members; their exhibit was a delight with the kiddies loving the model lambs, birds and the dog. One of the Sheffield members remarked to me; not a compe++on, all friends together. How good is that! Gardeners are a great lot. Happy days!
