Three local Selwyn girls Millie Calder, Calder Jessie Anderson and Georgie McKayMcKay-Stewart have recently had their selection confirmed in the New Zealand Under 21 hockey team. The girls, who have played together for a number of years have also progressed through the ranks together. Throughout their primary years the trio played junior hockey at the Hornby Hockey club, before at High School level, all transferred to thei r current Cl ub, Christchurch’s H arewood Hockey Club. Throughout the years the three have advanced through Canterbury representative grades, before reaching the pinnacle ‘Canterbury Cats’ team last season. With this team Millie, Jessie and Georgie competed in the National Hockey League tournament which consists of
the top eight men’s and women's teams in New Zealand. Millie and Jessie were picked for the New Zealand junior squad that travelled to Australia in 2016. While there they played Australia and Japan in a summer tournament which gave them a taste of the commitment and dedication needed to advance their hockey. Millie added that she is gratefully appreciative of the business sponsorship she has received, which has assisted with tournament expenses. Since July it has been a pretty busy time for the girls that all now attend Lincoln University. On top of their studies they have had two five day NZ U21 camps, a NHL (National Hockey League) tournament week and all three were picked to attend a ‘Black sticks’ I.D talent camp for four days during October.

WWI ended on November 11th 1918 at 11am. The great battles of attrition ceased, the guns were silent, the destruction and death stopped. It was over. Throughout the countries of the British Empire, USA, France and Italy was rejoicing. But the European continent and the Middle East were in political and social turmoil. Russia was in the midst of a vicious civil war with the Bolsheviks struggling for power. The Austro-Hungarian Empire, raked by nationalist fervour, was falling apart into separate nations - Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. The German nation was teetering on the edge of revolution similar to Russia. ln the Middle East the Ottoman Empire was in tatters with Britain and France eyeing its territories for further colonial exp a n s io n. T h e v ict or s, particularly Britain and France, were in a similar precarious
position as they had huge war debts to the USA. AII this was in addition to the enormous cost of the war in men and materials. The cost in human lives is mind numbing: 1.81 million Russians, 1.4 million French, 1.3 million Austrians, 745,000 British and so the litany of death continued. The numbers of dead from the Ottoman Empire are unknown, Canada 56,119, Australia 58,460, not to mention India and all the African countries. New Zealand, from a population of 1 million, had 100,000 troops and of these 40,000 were casualties and 18,000 died (these are rounded figures). At the time of WWI New Zealand's population was concentrated in small towns and rural districts. Thus, there are a hundr ed s of me mor ia ls scattered over the countryside in halls, churches, domains and cenotaphs. In the small townships of
Waddington and Sheffield twenty names are recorded on the cenotaph. Six of them were killed in action, died of wounds or disease in 1918. Those six deaths occurred in two months April and October. Two small communities in a small Country far away from the centre of the conflict felt its impact even to the last month of the war. The Sheffield Waddington T ownship Committee will commemorate Armistice Day on November 11th at 11am at the cenotaph with the unveiling of an information panel recording details of the soldiers recorded on the cenotaph for WW1. An avenue of remembrance will be dedicated. The avenue consists of a memorial cross for each soldier placed next to a Gallipoli Oak. ln the midst of the avenue is a peace garden planted with peace roses. The garden will have a plaque: Lest we forget the cost of war.

The Malvern Community Board are pleased to announce that Country Christmas in the Park is back following last year’s successful event. It is planned to be held on Sunday afternoon, December 9th at Westview Park, beside the skate park, in Darfield. Organisers are now calling for expressions of interest from those with Christmas themed stalls to attend the event. The Malvern Community Patrol will have the provision of hot food and ice blocks under control and a variety of entertainment is planned for the afternoon. The popularity of Christmas Carol singing will be accommodated
and it’s hoped this will give everyone a dose of festive spirit. But of course it wouldn’t be a festive event without a visit from Santa Claus and he’ll definitely be there, much to the delight of the younger members of the community no doubt. To further encourage the spirit of Christmas, organisers plan to initiate a ‘giving tree’. This will accept new, or good quality second hand, gifts for distribution to those who may be less fortunate, or who may be facing Christmas without much to look forward to. This event is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together as a community, catch

up with friends and neighbours and enjoy the lead-up to Christmas. Organisers suggest bringing a picnic, or partaking of the food available at the event and unfolding the chair to enjoy a Christmas sing-a-long. Perhaps watch some games and encourage those participating, as well as welcoming the start of the 2018 festive season.

This event at the Darfield Recreation Centre is a rare opportunity for people to enjoy these locally owned cars and all while raising funds for the Malvern Cancer Support Group.

Sheffield farmer, Donald Wright will present to the public, after its three year’s seclusion, his veteran Cadillac. “The car is a single cylinder Cadillac built in 1906 and was one of the first automobiles that appeared after the horse drawn carriage,” Donald explained. “My great grandfather had the same car when he was farming in Sheffield hence the relevance of this vehicle to me and my family,” he added. Donald hasn’t had the Cadillac out of storage for three years, but the opportunity to raise funds for the Malvern Cancer Support Group by doing so, was just the catalyst he needed. “This is such a good cause and I’m looking forward to giving the car a run and to enjoy it

The Mount Olympus Junior Freeride ski team has just completed another very successful season. This year the Olympus Club supported the Juniors by allowing Tim Hart Muller, Muller staff member, to train them. The Mt Olympus team, which swelled to thirteen members this season, consisted of locals and ex-locals Henry, Henry Tom and Poppy Freeman, Freeman Harry, Harry Will and Joe Cookson, Cookson Toby and Fletcher Thwaites, Thwaites Obie Simper, Simper along with Ruby and Sam Hewitt, Hewitt plus two Sumner skiers Henry Sturbridge and Theo Martin , plus Japanese student Tenra. Tenra The season started with warm up events at Cardrona and Mount Hutt before heading into the New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour, which took place at the Remarkables, Mt Olympus and Turoa. Sunday, November 4th, will be the final chance for the public to see Terrace Station’s heritage garden this spring. Organisers encourage folk to join them for their fantastic Christmas Trots At Mot event, to be held on the fourth Sunday in November. There will be ten grass track, harness races, at the Motukarara Raceway, kicking off around lunchtime. The event will cater for youngsters attending with a host of free children’s entertainment including pony rides, bouncy castle, face painting and the big bouncy bungee. Onsite will also be an array of food trucks to keep the crowds well and truly fed. Now’s the time to secure a trackside spot and invite friends, whānau, colleagues, fellow social clubbers or sports’ club members to celebrate Christmas at The Trots At Mot! There are numerous hospitality options available: Exclusive Mot Hill Sites: There are a limited number of exclusive Mot Hill sites, slap bang in the middle of the action, right next to the bird cage and members’ stand. From the elevated vantage point, people will have clear views of the track, bird cage and stables giving them a 360 view of all the

T h e H o m eb u s h S t ab l e s Historical Society was pleased to welcome nearly 700 people to celebrate their 25th anniversary last Sunday. It was a beautiful sunny day and people arrived with their picnic baskets and children to enjoy the museum and the gardens. The rain held off until the end of the day. Twenty five years ago, after two years of hard work restoring the very dilapidated stables building complex, Homebush Stables opened for business. The brick stables, built in 1870 on the site of old wooden stables, served the 33,000 acre Homebush run, leased from the Canterbury Land Association by the Deans family. Eight teams of six draft horses were sent out during the week to plough the land, with one team pulling a whare-on-wheels to service the other teams. James McIlraith, McIlraith Jane Deans’ half brother who managed Homebush from 1857 to 1895, bought a water turbine from Dayton Ohio in the US and in 1879 installed it in an extension to the stables. It was the working hub for the farm until the 1930s when the arrival of tractors and electricity made the building redundant. In 1990 local people interested in the history of the area met to plan the restoration of the building. The Historical Society was formed with the aim of restoring and maintaining the building, making it a destination for groups to visit and employing local people. The Malvern Motor and Machinery Club were invited to develop the museum. John Creamer, Creamer the curator for 25 years, has just decided to take a step back when he turned 90 last weekend. Homebush Stables were fortunate to have the building and engineering skills of Bill Hewitt, Hewitt Doug Joy, Joy Russell Williams, Williams Graham Taege and Ken Rae. Rae Lotto, the Rata Foundation and Selwyn District Council have assisted with funding. The garden has taken about fifteen years to get back into shape with the help of Colin Watson and many others. With a fabulous team of loyal, dedicated people they have an outstanding museum with local memorabilia, including a window from the old Darfield Railway Station, a restaurant catered by Country Feasts and a beautiful
eight acre garden. “Thank you for coming to celebrate a significant milestone in the life of the Homebush
Stables Historical Society. We loved showing you what we have achieved,” Louise Deans commented!

The Oxford Garden Fete last Sunday at the beautiful Ribblesdale Gardens was hailed as another success for the organisers. Crowds attended enmasse and while the weather was cool in temperature, it remained fine until the event was near conclusion. Feedback was complimentary with everyone commenting that they had much enjoyed shopping and relaxing in the beautiful garden setting. Celebrity guest, broadcaster Hilary Muir emailed the organisers after the event, saying, “thank you so much for
the opportunity be to at the Fete yesterday. Absolutely glorious event… loved the gardens”. “Stall holders were also effusive i n t h e ir p ra i s e, ” s a id spokesperson for the organisers, Wendy Doody. “Emails, such as, ‘I had a lovely day at the Fete, what an incredible garden’ and, ‘thank you and your amazing team for a fantastic day’, were just wonderful to receive,” Wendy said. It was extremely well organised, the setting was gorgeous and the people wandering around
were happy and relaxed, it was reported. “The band, Assembly Required, were once again fantastic and a real crowd pleaser,” Wendy added. “The Plainsmen barbershop quartets were also a hit; comprised of two groups, one with four older singers and one with four younger,” she commented. “They walked around the event, stopping and singing to a very impressed audience, which included three older women who were personally serenaded,” Wendy smiled.

FUEL ECONOMY With fuel (petrol and diesel) at an all-time high, we are all feeling it in the pocket. I’ve worked out that in my Nissan it costs me approx. $12 to go to work and back each day and I only drive about fifty kilometres. Here are some tips to help you save fuel and reduce your fuel costs: • Reduce your Air Conditioning usage. I know it’s summer, but try and keep the A/C off. The A/C system requires about 5-6 horse power to drive. With the average petrol car only producing 130 horse power it’ll use approximately 5% of the fuel just to keep you cool. • Keep your tyres inflated and wheels correctly aligned. I personally recommend keeping the pressures higher than recommended. The average car I’d recommend 36-38 psi. This will reduce rolling resistance. When your tyres are flat it’s like riding a pushbike with flat tyres, it’s a nice soft ride, but it’s hard to push along. • Change your spark plugs, fuel and air filters regularly and keep your car well serviced. In other words give your car a bit of loving and it’ll love you back. • Avoid rush hour traffic and excessive idling. idling Ok, so rush hour in Selwyn consists of three cars at one intersection, at a time, but leaving your car idling will chew through unnecessary fuel. • Don’t carry unnecessary weight. Remove the stuff from the boot and rear seat. I
constantly find cars full of horse and dog stuff, kid’s strollers, ski boots, millennials complete wardrobes, empty and full bottles of drink, lawn bowls, golf clubs, and smelly footy bags. If you really want to carry around extra weight, try car-pooling and carry around a human, they normally smell better than a footy bag too! • Avoid hard acceleration and hard braking when possible. My brother told me years ago to drive like there is an egg between your accelerator pedal and your foot. This will keep you from ‘flooring it’. Also drive with your eyes well ahead up the road. If you have to slow down try and coast to a stop and avoid hard braking. • Drive with your windows closed, remove roof racks, bike racks, roof boxes. Basically make your car as stream lined as possible. Try removing all the dirt from the outside too, this might not make too much difference but will make it look good! • Avoid short trips. Engines use more fuel when they are cold. Try walking or biking if you can, a short walk never hurt anyone. Fuel is far too expensive just to burn, although in reality that’s exactly what your engine does. But if we can reduce the amount it is burning, it is just saving money! In a nutshell. West Melton Volunteer Rural Fire Force had their official opening of their new building on Friday, October 26th. This was the first rural station built since Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) came in to being last year, so this was an auspicious occasion. This was an invitation only event that had Tracey Martin, Martin the Minister of Internal Affairs who FENZ reports to, along with other FENZ officials, other brigade members, also those that had been involved in the building and of course the important West Melton Volunteer Fire Fighters. It was reported to have been an successful opening with speeches by all the Ministers. There is going to be a public open day in the future so the general public can head along and have a look around.

By Lucinda Jarvis has shown a huge interest dogs in agility with Selwyn Dog New Zealand Deaf Bowls hosted the Annual Open National Championship at Springlands Bowling Club, in Blenheim over Labour Weekend. Deaf bowlers from all over New Zealand, stretching from Auckland to Invercargill came together for a weekend of bowling, catching up and socialising. The criteria for qualifying to enter Deaf Lawn bowling is to have a hearing loss of 55 or more in the better ear. Hazel Littlejohn from Darfield Bowling Club, entered this competition for the first time, and she came away jubilant with winning the Women’s single title, Mixed Pairs with John Lavell, Lavell and resulting in Top Player of the Year Award and the Women’s Highest Aggregate Points trophy. Pairing for the mixed pairs was drawn just before the competition started, Hazels partner John Lavell was from Sumner Bowls Club. Hazel is a farm manager on a large broiler farm which gives her the flexibility to train and play in between working. Being on call to the site means that Darfield Bowling Club is close enough to allow her to play and be on call at the same time. It is reported that the owner of the farm, is very supportive and

Hazel has spent many hours during the winter training with her coach, on the artificial green in Dunsandel and Hazel said, “it certainly has paid off.” Next January, New Zealand Deaf Lawn Bowls is hosting the International Championship with six countries coming to play in Christchurch, at Burnside Bowling Club. Hazel has been picked to represent New Zealand, playing in the triples and fours. Her goals for the future are the Malvern Women’s Junior and Club Championship Junior Singles titles. “My interests in bowls was from when I was barely a teenager, staying with my grandparents on the occasional weekends. Grandad used to enjoy watching the Lawn Bowling on television following David Bryant and Tony Alcock,” Alcock said Hazel. “My husband and myself have had the odd social roll up in the United Kingdom, in full sized indoor bowls center's, but I was too busy with family and work to commit to playing seriously,” commented Hazel. The opportunity to play for Hazel was five years ago, as she felt that she needed something to do in her spare time, along with competing two

training club. “Due to the increased hours training and preparing for the International, the dogs have been put to one side. (but still loved),” Hazel explained. Having the opportunity to do this has given Hazel more confidence in herself as having the disadvantage of not being able to hear very well can leave her feeling isolated and being shy about being in social situations. Where there are lots of people, sounds and words gets lost which makes it very hard to hear what people are saying. “I’m fortunate to have hearing friends who are very supportive and understand. Being with the deaf bowlers was great, as we could communicate via sign and lip reading sharing our experiences past and present and the feeling of isolation goes away as we all on the same par. Bowling as a sport lends itself very well to deaf people as you can communicate by sign from a distance without having to be close by,” Hazel added. “Now there is more deaf awareness in the media and social networks its not as challenging as it used to be,” commented Hazel. Hazel first found out about Deaf Bowling when she meet Barbara Herrick, Herrick from West Melton Bowling Cub, at a tournament on the West Coast three years ago. Barbara told Hazel that she has been all over the world competing and asked if she was interested, to which Hazel replied she was. Thinking it would be nice to be picked and to travel. Hazel was wondering where it could be, Australia, South Africa, England? Hazel asked Barbara where? And she put her hand up, signing the letter C twice. “Oh,” replied Hazel disappointedly ‘Christchurch.’

They were very lucky with the weather, the rain held off till everything was finished and then it decided to visit again. It was reported that it was a great success, with this day being the
students. Animals that attended ranged from turtles, cats, birds, fish, horses, dogs and lambs. There were many indoor exhibits with children building models, baking, pet rocks, flowers, gumboots, masks lots of variety and creativity displayed. Children with pets
judges on their care and health while indoors, the judges commented and appreciated the work produced by the children as they judged the exhibits. Before lunch there was a sheep shearing display which was enjoyed by many.

By Lucinda Jarvis pigs, a lizard (in hiding!), and Greendale School acknowledges Greendale School was blessed with a warm day and great company when they hosted another memorable Pet Day on Friday, October 26th. An early start saw the children having fun creating sand saucers, vegetable animals, scenes in a tray and floral arrangements and decorated bikes and scooters were put on display in the playground, all for judging later in the morning. Everyone listened to informative talks on bees, and dog safety. Greendale School would like to thank the Cleaver family and Selwyn District Council for these talks. It was reported that his year’s judges were most impressed hearing about the Physical Science experiments designed and demonstrated by the students – they had such amazing ideas. Parents joined in the fun, exhibiting in the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle section. The pets ranged from a pony, dogs, lambs, an adorable angora kid, rabbits, cats, guinea
even a jelly fish. It was reported that, people heard many students discussing whether the jelly fish was actually real! A ft e r t h e p e t p a r ad e , Greendale’s School Principal, CareyCarey-Anne Hamilton, Hamilton along with everyone present, welcomed Whaea Denise Sheat, representing Te Taumutu Rūnanga, who gifted Greendale School with their Māori school name: Kānuka Ruruhau, and presented them with a kānuka tree, which will be planted in the school grounds. The busy day concluded with their World-Famous-inGreendale Cake Auction. Families excelled in baking and creatively decorating cakes, supporting the theme of “Science”. Grant McIlroy ran the auction, ably assisted by their PTA, to raise funds for swimming lessons and resources for the students. Many of the families would have enjoyed devouring cake over the weekend.

November 3rd, is the annual Jack Shield competition between Canterbury Clubs with three rounds of competition, seven counting shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards. Visitors are welcome. For further details see the Malvern Rifle Club’s Facebook page
The Darfield Premier team slipped on a banana skin in the form of Kaiapoi Cricket Club on Saturday at the Darfield Domain. Kaiapoi achieved their first win of the season by dismissing the home team for an underwhelming 154 when again Darfield failed to bat their full 45 overs. It was left to Nick Johnston with 50 runs and Sean Carston 37 runs to resurrect an innings that promised to kick into gear, but in the end couldn't even ignite the spark plug, losing its last six wickets for twenty runs. Had Kaiapoi's catching not been so poor, the result could have been worse. After the innings’ break, Darfield's bowlers started well by reducing the visitors to 26/3
October where a team was selected to play a three game series against Australia in Napier, from November 29th until December 2nd. The Canterbury girls are
continuing their training in Christchurch with the regional high-performance coach, until they go back into camp on November 26th prior to the international games in Napier.
This weekend the Darfield Community Gardens in Russell Street, will hold a free workshop to demonstrate the installation of a water tank to harvest rain water off the Bowling Club roof. (see their Facebook page for further details of this event). This workshop will include setting up an overflow system to ensure once full, the overflow goes back into the existing storm water system. Water use in a garden can come at a high cost, with water now being metered. So being able to collect in times of excess, for use in times of shortage, is a smart move. The Garden also prides itself on its philosophy of reusing and recycling items, so harvesting water seems the next logical step. The Community Garden are grateful to the Darfield Bowling Club for allowing them to utilise their storm water system that borders the garden. With a storage capacity of 5,000 litres, this means the Community Garden will be far more self-sufficient with their water needs. Another major development in the Garden has been the installation of the Community Pantry. This is found under the gazebo in the garden. It is a place for excess produce to be exchanged. The mantra is ‘Take what you need, Give what you can’. After a month in use it has been phenomenal to see the exchanges that are taking place it was reported. Even the gifting of a full range of produce, canned goods, seedlings and seeds to be used in the garden! “Gardening is wonderful and there are always times of excess,” said a Community Garden spokesperson, “so
having a place to share them to minimise wastage seems to be a welcome addition.” The Garden is currently being extended, by adding another bed. This will ensure there is even more produce to share among those who help in the garden, for the pantry and for the greater community. “If anyone would like to help out in the Garden the team meet every Wednesday morning for an hour two, or if anyone has excess seedlings they can be dropped off to the Garden, where they will be gratefully received.” The Community Garden orchard consists of close to thirty trees, are they currently in full bloom with some of the early cultivators already having fruit set. “This will be the year of the first harvest.”

On Tuesday, October 23rd, the Malvern Community Board held a meeting in the Kirwee Hall. Community committee members from Kirwee and Courtenay were invited along to share views and raise any pertinent issues with the Board and staff. Shortly before the formal meeting, the Board visited the Kirwee Domain playground for a briefing on the issues that Council staff need to consider when ensuring playgrounds on Council reserves meet the playground safety standards. Formal Board business included reports from the Chair and Board Members. The Chair noted the times for various Armistice Day celebrations. Council’s Property and Commercial Manager, Douglas Marshall, advised that the Council will be employing a seasonal ranger for six months over the summer season as a result of a successful application to the Government’s Responsible Camping Fund. This additional ranger will complement the Council’s existing three rangers who are rostered on over a standard seven day week during the summer period, meaning there is always a Council ranger available to assist with the various reserve maintenance/camping issues that arise during the week, and at the weekends. The Board also approved the appointment of Jayde Mayberry to the Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund Assessment Committee for a three year term commencing December 1st, 2018. Community members present raised several issues which were responded to by staff and Councillors present. Raymond Williams from the Kirwee Recreation Reserve Committee talked about the concept plan for the development of the Reserve. Lindsay Westaway, a member of both the Reserve and Township Committees, supported the plans. David Stott in his capacity as Kirwee resident and ratepayer talked about the district wide rating and was advised that Council’s working group on the matter, will be looking into all of the issues raised by ratepayers. Ken May also spoke about the Kirwee Hall and was encouraged to continue advocating for it. Diane Westaway said she would like to see ratepayers’ money utilised for something worthwhile and noted that communities were less involved in halls and reserves, as it was getting harder to maintain them. She thanked Council for the good work they do.
