The annual Labour Day (October 22nd) Hororata Parish Spring Fair saw a large crowd enjoy a good-spirited, community day, that also celebrated the community’s connection to a prominent moment in New Zealand, and world, history, Suffrage 125. Well known storyteller, Margaret Copland, Copland along with historians Colin Wilson and Kate Foster presented Sir John Hall’s story. Sir John’s last act before retiring from parliament was to pilot the bill which gave women the right to vote in 1893. Their presentation included sharing the speech he read in parliament supporting the women’s rightto-vote bill.

Visitors to the Fair also enjoyed learning more about the Suffrage movement with a display and movie put together by the Homebush Historical Society. “It was great to be part of the Beca Heritage Week and the Suffrage 125 celebrations, it added a new twist to the Fair and showcased our community,” said committee chair Lucy Cookson. Cookson The Country Auction is always a feature of the event and the addition of the ‘Agri-Art’ section, (where local blokes showed their number 8 wire ingenuity to create garden art) was a highlight of the day.
