Shakedown’s aim is to encourage youth, and young adults, to excel in dance and to use their talents in a positive way. They encourage a fun, but competitive, environment where the crews and dancers not only showcase their creativity and skills, but also meet new people and make new friends. This is the ninth year Nelson has hosted this competition and it’s

reported that every year the standard has grown. More than fifty crews compete, travelling from throughout New Zealand, and the competition caters for all dance experience levels, as well as school-based teams. Manaia had initially entered into a solo class for her age (thirteen years and under).

At the conclusion of the MCAC Darfield art week the People’s Choice Award, went to Paeonies by Svetlana Orinko. Those visiting the exhibition could vote for their favourite piece with organisers needing to increase the entry-form print-run, mid-event; such was the popularity of both the exhibition and the competition. 1909 Ladies at Courtenay Show - Show organisers would love to identify those in the picture - can anyone help? The Courtenay A&P Show is fast approaching and the closing date for entries is November 5th. “Don’t miss out,” encouraged Courtenay A&P Show secretary, Sharon Kellock. Kellock “Whether you’re a baker, horse rider, sheep breeder, poultry fancier or photographer, there are classes for everyone. If you haven’t already got your schedule, see the advert on this page for where to pick one up,” she added. As well as great food, the Show will feature displays of farm machinery and irrigation, Christmas gift shopping, face painting, and of course not forgetting - the amusement rides; visitors can even have a go at playing mus ical instruments! “When is the last time you rode the chair-oplane?” Of special interest to locals will be a display by predator eradication group

Also don’t forget the Terrier Race be sure to get yours in training now,” she added. “Both of these events can be entered at the Show.” This year the Horse Committee have introduced a new Section, called Pleasure Horse/Pony. This is a low key section for any one who wants to enter an A&P Show, but does not have a show horse/pony. “There is no measuring required, no plaiting and you can be more relaxed about turnout,” Sharon explained. “Some of the classes included in this section are barrel racing, best trot and best handy horse/ pony. Needless to say we are excited about our new section and look forward to gaining a

number of entries.” Children have a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate their artistic and creative abilities with the Show’s new Pet Rock classes. The options are endless! Reluctantly, due to the M Bovis situation, the Cattle Committee have made the decision to restrict the Section to Pet Calf, and Handler classes. Pets will be judged on farm, with video of the entrants played at the Show. Handler classes will be held at the Show, but using display cattle from one breeder only. In 1909 the dress code for women attending the Courtenay Show was rather elaborate, and maybe hats do not need to be quite so ornate now. Nevertheless, Show organisers still recommend bringing a sunhat for the late spring sunshine. “We would love someone to identify the people in the photo,” Sharon commented.

On Thursday, October 25th, parents of children heading to school in the next year are invited to attend a get-together to hear primary school principals and/or new entrant teachers to learn more about the eight schools in the area. Darfield Preschool and Nursery have run the event annually in the past, but this year after the Preschool spoke to Ceri Foote at Annabel’s Educare, they thought they would open it up to all parents in the community

that may be interested. Whether their children attend Darfield Preschool and Nursery, Annabel’s, Playcentre, In-home care, or are at home with family they would be most welcome, reported organisers. The evening, beginning at 6:30pm, will see each school representative have an opportunity to speak about their school. Parents/caregivers will then be able to speak to each representative to get further information before socialising

with a cuppa. “It’s a great way to get those in the community, with children of a similar age, together, while providing a valuable service to the di strict’s parent s,” organisers said. In order for Darfield Preschool and Nursery to get an indication of numbers, they request that those attending please RSVP to them.

CentreStage Rolleston is in the full swing of rehearsals for their debut show of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat which will hit the stage from November 15th through to November 24th. The Rolleston Primary School Hall is set to be transformed into the land of Egypt before the cast of eighty (forty adults and forty children), entertain. Central to the vision of CentreStage was the ability to offer quality local theatre to the growing community of Rolleston. The team behind CentreStage Rolleston have a huge amount of combined experience and all live in the Rolleston community.

The creative team for the debut are Phil Dean, Dean Darren Weber and Anna Randall. Randall The Show includes many families, not just onstage, but also in the fifteen piece orchestra, set design and build, costumes, lighting, sound, marketing, stage crew and general production. One such person is Barry Tomkinson, Tomkinson the designer of the absolutely amazing Dreamcoat; and also cast as Simeon, one of Joseph’s older brothers. He comments: “I have been a fan of the Show for as long as I can remember. I went to see the West End production in the early 1990s when Jason Donovan and Philip Schofield were playing the leads and I thought what a great costume for a fancy-dress party. The dream was to one day use it in a show, but I never realistically expected that to happen. I thought it won’t take long to whip up something like that and so set to work…… “I used pictures from the Show programme, soundtrack and an old copy of Smash Hits

magazine from 1992 - which I still have somewhere! The whole coat consists of two old hand knitted jumpers that I swiss darned the patterns onto in panels, with lots of sewing machine lines around the edges to prevent t hem from unravelling when cutting them out. Once all of that was together it was just a matter of adding the fabric wedges to the bottom half and I lined with a black iron on interface. It was a very long work in progress. Off and on it took around fifteen to twenty years to finish! (with more than a bit of downtime!) “It has been worn twice - once as an audience member to the Showbiz Christchurch production of Joseph in 2010 and again to a fancy dress party. “It means a lot to actually have the coat being used rather than stored in a cupboard. Previously it has not seen the light of day that much, it’s not exactly the sort of thing that is suitable for every-day use….!”

Members of the Oxford RSA are trying to locate any living family/ relations of WWI Soldier Private Robert Joseph Crossen, Crossen Serial Number 46559, NZEF, Canterbury Regiment, 1 Battalion. Date of Death, December 3rd, 1917. It’s believed Robert is listed on the Leeston Cenotaph. Robert was the sixth son in the family, and RSA members are hopeful his other brothers or sisters had families and a link to him can be found there. The RSA are attempting to locate Robert’s kin as they have in their possession the Memorial Plaque, also known as the Dead Man’s Penny, issued after the First World War to the next-ofkin of all British and Empire service personnel who were killed as a result of the war. It’s reported that this Memorial Plaque, bearing Robert Joseph Crossen’s name, is in very good

The Oxford RSA will be holding an Armistice Day commemoration service at the Oxford Cenotaph on November 11th 2018 and they would love to locate any family, so as to return the Memorial Plaque as part of that Service. Oxford RSA members have done considerable research to date finding the following: Robert Joseph Crossen - mother Mrs E. Crossen, of Rolleston, Canterbury. His brother also fought in WW1, Private George Lawrence Crossen Serial No 6/3671 last served with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment. George died in 1919 and is buried in the Lincoln Cemetery, Selwyn District. George was the son of Ellen Crossen (nee Scully), Scully of 24 Hastings Street, Sydenham, Christchurch. George served in Egypt and on the Western Front, 1916. There was a third brother Private Michael Crossen Serial

Often when I offer somebody our home grown walnuts to taste they reply that they are “not really the nut eating type”. How about you? Do you think you know what walnuts taste like? You might have bought some from the bulk bin in your supermarket at some time. You might think they are ok, as they are meant to be a superfood, but not really tasty and rather bitter, and some seem to taste a bit stale. Most of those walnuts are imported and have been cracked, plus the kernels have been stored for a long time until they were shipped to our shores. His youngest brother, George, returned wounded some months ago, and his brother Michael, who left with the 13th Reinforcements, is still in France. To the Editors: Selwyn District Council regularly chlorinates water supplies to eliminate pathogenic microbes. Readers should be aware of disturbing discoveries about the effect this has on hot water cylinders. Over the winter I noticed that the bottom of my shower was turning blue. I concluded this was the fault of my water supply, so I had cold and hot water samples tested. Cold water quality met the Ministry of health guidelines, but the copper content of the hot water was 62 times higher than the cold - almost at the upper acceptable limit! Obviously, despite water supply in Whitecliffs ceasing in April, serious corrosion continues. At a recent presentation in Christchurch, the mechanism for this was described: once chlorinecontaining water purifying chemicals remove the protective oxide layer from the internal surface of the cylinder, bacterial action, relying on the presence of iron and sulphides (silver blackener) continues to corrode copper, leading to pinholes. There is no known mechanism for reversing this at present. If your hot water cylinder fails, it will cost around $4,000 to replace, plus consequential damage. To see if there is a risk, you can get a hot water analysis from Hill Laboratories for around $130. (There are also competent laboratories that can test the

difference in copper content between a hot and cold water sample for $70 + gst.) Selwyn District Council must use alternative water purification procedures such as ozonation or UV treatment, but more importantly, it must ensure that water supplies are better protected at source, and it must contribute to the cost of investigating means of remediation.

Graeme Coles Whitecliffs To the Editors: This weekend, animals will be subjected to fear, stress and torment in the name of so-called ‘entertainment’ at the Winchester and Methven Rodeos. Rodeo is nothing more than a form of bullying. Ordinarily docile bulls and horses are painfully forced into aggressive behaviour. Vulnerable young calves will be put through the stress of being roped around the neck and yanked off their feet at high speed. These practices not only cause tremendous stress but can cause serious injuries to the animals, including torn ligaments, broken bones and severe bruising. A bull was killed in the 2017-2018 rodeo season after his leg was broken during the Pukemanu Bullride in Martinborough. Rodeo is condemned by vets, welfare experts and animal protection organisations worldwide, and Horizon research shows that two out of three Kiwis agree that rodeo causes suffering to animals. The social licence for rodeo is expired. The New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys Association has implemented new suggested animal welfare practices, which reveals that even they admit the severe toll these events take on the animals. If those in the Methven and Winchester area care about animals and disagree with animal abuse, I urge them to please avoid the rodeo.

Commenting that she wasn’t concerned about winning, but just wanted to push herself by competing in an older age group division, Manaia took to

the stage and won! But not only did she win, she also took out the choreography award. This was a huge achievement because Manaia had choreographed her own routine, and mixed her own music. “For me personally, this was the greatest achievement,” Manaia’s proud mother Yerane added. “Manaia was also in the Mega Crew (twelve plus dancers), Varsity division, as part of the Zion Studio’s team and they also won,” Yerane added. The Shakedown competition saw s t ud ios fr o m Ta ur a nga , Hamilton, Wellington, Nelson and Christchurch attend to compete, with top level judges from Canada, New Zealand and Brisbane adjudicating. Yerane told the News, “prior to attending Shakedown we had returned from competing in San Diego where Manaia and her New Zealand crew came an amazing eighth. We later went to LA where she attended workshops facilitated by the best choreographers in the world. This was a dream come true for

her, as the training received from these people was an opportunity not to be missed. An opportunity she was able to take advantage of following the kindness and support from our community. This we will be forever grateful for,” an appreciative Yerane said. The future for Manaia is already panning out to be a busy one as she has been asked to compete in three crews through Auckland’s Red Studios in the Brisbane House of Champions competition which takes place in late October. She has trained throughout the school holidays in Auckland for this event.

It’s one year since Natalie and Adrian Mannering took the plunge and embarked on trading as a Nursery business. Nat’s Nursery in Hororata is now celebrating their first birthday and reminiscing about their first marketing outing. This was the 2017 Hororata Spring Fair (the 2018 one will take place this weekend) and the couple commented that they enjoyed meeting customers and discussing their planting needs. Nat and Adrian had been based in the area for the past eighteen years moving from Darfield to Hororata with their two children, two years ago. When offered the opportunity a year ago to purchase a substantial amount of Hororata Wholesale Nursery’s plant stock they grabbed the opportunity with both hands and ran with it. Natalie has a strong horticulture background having grown up on an orchard in Hawkes Bay, but even so the past year has brought numerous learning curves for the pair. “Learning correct plant names and developing a good business model has allowed me to work from home and provide a great service to the community,” Nat commented. In the past year Nat’s Nursery has taken their custom plant trailer and attended local markets, fairs and A & P Shows. “We love these experiences,” Nat explained, “even though it was a little daunting at the beginning. Meeting people and

talking about their gardening plans, as well as those that already have established gardens is a real highlight for me. It keeps me focussed and motivated through some of the inevitable speed bumps of a business in its infancy,” Nat laughed. Natalie has had several nursery ‘pop ups’ in Methven, plus has enjoyed supporting Malvern’s local Darfield Market on Saturday mornings. “I am really motivated to provide plants that are well priced and accessible, but most importantly plants that are grown in, or brought-in, because they survive in this area,” Natalie explained. “Coming into my second year of

business I am really looking forward to propagating and collecting my own plant seeds to deepen my experience and knowledge in this field,” Natalie said. The couple thank everyone who has supported Nat’s Nursery and especially those who have passed on knowledge, advice, time and effort, commenting that they are forever grateful. Small Strokes Synchro Club, based at their private swim school in Weedons, took the biggest ever contingent of swimmers to the National Championships held in Auckland recently. One hundred and seventy girls competed at the event from nine New Zealand Clubs, four Australian Clubs, and

New Caledonia. The Small Strokes girls ranked well in both figures and routines with all sections having large numbers of competitors in them (the 13,14 and 15 year age group had 52 competitors). The Small Strokes open combination free routine (Alessandra Alessandra Ward, Ward Pippa Smith, Smith Tia Betteridge, Betteridge Kaitlyn Allison, Allison Hannah Shatford, Shatford Daisy Sellier and Nellie Manning) came in at a creditable sixth place. The Dolphin team was eighth in their section with Tillie Hawkins, Hawkins Louisa Chretiens, Chretiens Catriona Smart, Smart Lizzy Marvin, Marvin Ella McClure, McClure Charlotte Leatherland, Leatherland Arielle Russell and Marie Akarana, who it was reported all swam extremely well. Small Strokes had two soloists competing in the twelve years and under section and who finished with a high list ranking. The School’s two duets also performed well in their agegroups: Pippa Smith & Hannah Shatford. Shatford Yana Chernova & Francisca Stinson (their Aquanaut gaining fifth place). Small Strokes are very proud to have two girls selected to represent New Zealand. Alessandra Ward and Tia Betteridge, both fourteen years old, will compete next month in the Singapore and

Malaysia Nationals. Also at the event of note, Small Strokes owner and head coach,, Joan Billing, Billing was presented with an ‘Honours Award’ to recognise her years of commitment to the sport.

Dust off the tennis racquet and join a Tennis Club in the area, e.g. Courtenay, Darfield, Greendale, Hororata, Kirwee, Sheffield, View Hill, Weedons or West Melton. Twilight Tennis begins on Thursday, October 25th and there are two grades played ‘Social’ and ‘Serious’. Those who’ve played in the past commented that intending players definitely don’t need to

be experts, and in fact it is an excellent way to learn more, by doing it. There can be as many in the team as liked, but four play each week in three, half hour matches; one with each team mate. Each team comes up with their own quirky name e.g. Racketeers. At the conclusion of play, games won or lost are counted up and all agree that it’s a wonderful activity for families.

The predicted forecast of snow, rain, winds and temperatures down to minus 8 did not deter a group of hardy anglers who attended the 2018 Darfield ITM/ Rugby Club Fishing Competition at Lake Benmore. Officially taking place over October, 12th13th. Fifty plus adults and children started arriving on the Thursday evening and all left, after surviving the weather, by Sunday lunchtime. Although waking to a fresh minus two early on Saturday morning, what followed was a great day; fishing in the sun covered azure Lake, with a remarkable backdrop of snow covered mountains. The early evening BBQ and prize giving had many discussing the awesome day it had turned out to be, with some keen anglers actually spending a whole ten hours on the Lake.
