The Friends of Kirwee Model School held their fundraising Casino night on Saturday, September 22nd raising funds for a much-needed School playground. The Casino night itself was run by the Malvern Lions, with the Friends of the School committee supplying food, drinks and rounding up over fifty prizes from generous sponsors around the South Island. The Hall was packed with dice games, racing games and roulette wheels to keep everyone entertained. After some practise runs the real games began where punters gambled their $30,000 funny money in a hope to win more money to spend over the two auctions for the evening. Some of the items on offer sold for millions! Silent auctions ran throughout the night and consisted of a Stihl Chainsaw, whale watching flight, Hanmer holiday package, TranzAlpine tickets and an electric sit to stand desk, which

were all taken home by happy bidders. The Friends of Kirwee Model School thank everyone who came along in support of the School, as well as all the parents who donated their time to help with making and serving supper, preparing the Hall and

The largest planting day of the year for Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust was held at an array of Hororata area planting sites on Saturday, September 22nd. The plan was to plant 5,000 native trees with up to 150 volunteers, but with only one week to go there were just eighty volunteers confirmed. Phone calls, flyers at markets and social media brought the registrations over the line to 125 very willing and c a p a b l e p e o p l e. T h e s e volunteers gave their whole day to planting native trees for habitat regeneration on the Canterbury Plains, as well as having fun. The sites ranged from dryland to wetland. A pair of budding ecology students from Lincoln University, were taken to sites in the early hours of the morning to assist with laying plants. Over the day, they raced to keep up with the crowd of planters from one site to the next. They need to have a knowledge of which species can handle various soil types and moisture requirements etc. The Canterbury plantout days even attract families with toddlers. Sue and Karl Thompson planted at Pam Aldersleys site in Springfield. They drove from Christchurch with their ten-month-old daughter Olive to be among like -minded people and spend a day in nature. passing stakes to her mum and helping Dad firm down the soil. Te Ara Kākāriki seek out willing landowners every year, as well as public lands for planting native ‘Greendots’, which are stepping stones for birds across the Plains. The Trust will be gathering applications again in October this year. This particular programme in Hororata is funded by the Ministry for the Environment’s Community Environment Fund, and it will last for one more year. One of the planting groups was fortunate to plant at a public site and they will be easily able to return in years to come and see the fruits of their labour. Pauline Pearce is one of Hororata Golf course’s regular volunteers, and she brought along her niece Chloe Sands. Sands Pauline proudly showed others around some of the first

plantings carried out in 2010, many of which are now four or five metres tall. The planting day is well equipped and organised with two concurrent volunteer groups across three sites each. There were buses, high quality planting spades, marquees, food and refreshments for the day’s duration. Schedules are detailed down to the minute, however as with any event, the unpredictable does happen. A flat bus battery needed a Plan B to proceed! But despite some delays, and a few hundred plants (of the 5,000) being left for two landowners to plant, comments from the volunteers were all cheerful, and all said it was a fantastic day out. Michal Kuchar, Kuchar a student from Lincoln University commented, “that it was one of the best volunteer events he has been to across New Zealand.

Malvern Community Arts Council and Selwyn Gallery continue their fortieth and twentieth celebrations this October with a range of works from private collections for the Anniversary Exhibition. A celebration months in the making, committee members past and present, along with Friends of the Gallery were invited to submit works from their collections. The works have been purchased from Selwyn Gallery, Artweek and October exhibitions through the years - some pre-dating Selwyn

Nineteen films were submitted for this year’s Environmental Film Competition run by Lincoln Envirotown Trust. This marked a substantial increase over previous years and organisers hope that it is indicative of people’s concerns about their environment, a willingness to articulate these, and to suggest actions. It was noted that a particularly pleasing feature of entries this year was that there were five independent entries by adult producers, alongside the assorted school age group and individual entries. As the acting Mayor of Selwyn, Councillor John Morten pointed out at the

Awards’ Evening, the number of varied entries greatly enhanced the contest, but left the judges with a very difficult task indeed. All the films were viewed at a fun filled evening and all producers and actors received recognition for the work they had put in, and the contribution they had made. Special prizes went to the category winners: Preschool: won by Kidsfirst Lincoln who showed those present all the work they were doing to keep the Liffey clean enough for eels. Primary School: won by Springfield School who detailed their amazing efforts to plant natives at their school, including a request to the local fire brigade to come and water them! The adult producer Monika Rastoggi won her category with an excellent instructional film on how simple everyday routines can be adapted to give more sustainable living. Lincoln High School students Lexi Richards and Libby Duncan won the overall ’Kea Trophy’ for their humourous instructional film on how to create beeswax wraps, for use in place of cling film. Lincoln Envirotown thank those who sponsored prizes, their

input was much appreciated.

Springfield Primary School were rapt, and quite rightly so, with their recognition and two pupils submitted the piece below to explain how their award came about: Last year Springfield School replanted a corner of their School grounds with the help of local supporters and parents. Recently Springfield School entered the Selwyn Envirotown Film Competition. The criteria to enter the competition was that it had to be based around the environment and how we need to care for it. We entered a Powerpoint preentation that held tips on how to transform an old area that held dead trees and old grass, we also had to cut down a few pine trees because they were a safety hazard. We found some old fire wood lying in the grass. This space is now an area that is full of natives. We planted natives so that native bugs and birds can make their homes in our grounds, we also made that space look a lot tidier. We explained the steps that we used and we also showed pictures of them. On Friday, September 14th we went to the awards’ night of the Selwyn Envirotown Film Competition at the Lincoln Event Centre. There were a lot of awesome videos about the environment and even Preschools entered and showed videos on how they can protect the environment. After all of the videos it was time for the awards, we got first place in the Primary Division, we all really enjoyed the night and everyone is proud of our entry.

Judges (one of whom was Rudd Kleinpaste) Kleinpaste of the Yates Budding Young Gardener competition have just announced the regional winners and now it’s public voting that determines the overall National title of New Zealand winner. It’s hoped News readers will get behind young Darfield gardener, eight year old Rubie Leech, Leech who has just taken the title of Regional (Canterbury/ West Coast) Budding Young Gardener. Rubie now goes up against the six other regional winners to be eligible for a family trip to Australia which includes passes to three Gold Coast theme parks - and it will all depend on public voting from here! Voting is now open and closes on October 6th. “To enter this competition, Rubie had to enter either a photo, or a video, of her and her garden and also answer some gardening questions such as who her biggest gardening inspiration is and what she likes to grown in her garden, and why,” reported Rubie’s mum Kylie. “Rubie loves presenting, so decided to enter a video. In her video, along with fruit trees plus the vegetable and herb gardens, she and her little brother Harry exhibited some great faces after trying some lemons from the tree! She also included some footage of her planting some seedlings for her garden as well,” Kylie added. For winning the regional section, Rubie wins a Yates gardening hamper worth over $300, plus a place in the final round. “Although the theme parks in the final prize are a massive attraction to Rubie, her greatest wish to win the trip to Australia is because it would mean that she would get to see her Great Aunty and Uncle, who she is very fond of,” Kylie explained. The grand prize also includes a home visit from a Yates horticulturist to pass on some great skills and tips. Rudd Kleinpaste commented that he felt the next generation of New Zealanders is becoming more and more disconnected from nature as digital devices demand more time. “The Yates Budding Young Gardener aims to celebrate a love of

gardening and encourage children of all levels of capability to further develop their passion. Whether children are just starting out, or have been gardening for a few years and know how to sow seeds, rustle up a few radishes and turn lemons into lemonade this competition is for them,” Rudd enthused.

Last week Windwhistle School held a themed Book Fair entitled ‘Paws For Books’. During the week-long event various competitions took place and successful answers were rewarded with prizes. Room 1: had to answer five book related questions - a stationery prize was won by Guy. Room 2: had to guess the paws in a competition - cookbooks were won by Amelia and Emily for their correct answers. Anyone could enter ‘Guess the Number of Cat Lollies in the Jar’ and it was won by Sam J from room 2 who was rewarded with stationery and the jar of lollies for his efforts. In the Colouring Competitions, all winners received a book: Rm1: girls - Isla, Isla boys - Macsen. Macsen Rm2: girls - Emma, Emma boys - Max. Max The dress up competition had the theme of ‘Favourite Book Character’, all winners received a book as a prize. Winners: Gansta Granny - Alex. Fancy Nancy and her Posh puppy - Emily and Pippa.

Andi and Ricki Smith currently live on a small lifestyle block just out of Darfield, they have three children between them, and recently purchased an ENZED mobile hose doctor business. Andi was raised in the Malvern area, while Ricki was born and lived in Southland. Ricki’s youth was spent working on cars and small farm machinery, before he gained employment in the local mining industry. Since leaving Southland Ricki’s career has been varied; he is the former owner/operator of a towing company, before moving

on to driving large trucks. Andi and Ricki were drawn to the ENZED brand because of its longevity and quality of service. “They stand behind their products and services and as we knew the previous owner valuable background was able to be provided, making the purchase an easy decision.” The opportunity to purchase came up at a time when the couple wanted to create some future certainty, plus move away from the long hours that come with rotating shift work, driving trucks. Spring has sprung and the outdoor bowls season has begun with a lovely day for the Darfield Bowling Club opening which took place on Saturday, September 22nd. The Darfield Green, as always, was in impeccable condition thanks to the Club’s devoted greenkeeper Elwyn Cridge and his band of helpers who spend many hours keeping it in tip top condition, it was reported. After five years as Club president, Rex Smith has stood down for new incumbent Peter Redfern. Redfern However Darfield Bowling Club secretary Robert Ireland remains in the position as Secretary, a position he has

held for more years than he admits remembering. During the winter, women from the Club ran successful ‘Housie’ sessions every Monday, this was so popular that participants have asked for more of the same next year! Last season Darfield Bowlers performed very well by not only taking an almost clean sweep of the Malvern titles, but also competing in inter Club competitions in Christchurch and surrounds. Darfield Teams finished top three in the majority of events against Clubs with considerably larger numbers. The Club congratulates Peter Redfern

Since 2010, The Mobile Vet Nurse has been providing inhome veterinary nursing and preventative health care for companion pets in Christchurch and surrounding areas. extremely rewarding. Improving animal welfare and health is a real passion of mine, and I am excited to join a team offering such a unique service.” Since beginning The Mobile Vet Nurse, Chrissy has seen demand for in-home veterinary services continue to grow, “we understand that your pet is a member of the family and travel to the vet for routine wellness treatments can prove difficult to coordinate! Your animals’ comfort is our biggest concern and carrying out essential treatments at home puts your pet immediately at ease,” Chrissy said. You need a mule to plough such wet ground, he says. "Where can I buy one?" he is asked. Well, I just happened to have one for 100 dollars he says. "I'll take him," says the other man as he counts out the money. I can't bring him over today. I don't work on Sunday, morrow OK? "Sure." The next day the truck pulls up and the old farmer gets out. He says, "sorry, bad news." I went out aQer breakfast and the mule was dead. The city feller says just give me my money back then. "Can't, spent it already!" "Well... unload the mule then." "What ya gonna do with him?" "Raffle him off!" "Naw, ya cant raffle off a dead mule!" "Just watch me us! City fellers know a few tricks." One month goes by and the city feller and farmer run into each other at the barber shop. "What did ya do with that dead mule?" "Raffled him off, sold 100 +ckets at two dollars each and made 98 dollars profit." "Didn't anyone complain?" "Just one guy so I gave him his two dollars back!"

To the houses where the woman is the boss, a chicken was given. He got toward the end of the street and saw a couple outside gardening. "Who's the boss around here?" he asked. "I am." said the man. "I have a black horse and a brown horse," the farmer said, "which one would you like?" The man thought for a minute and said, "The black one." "No, no, no, get the brown one." the man's wife said. "Here's your chicken." said the farmer. A farmer gets sent to jail, and his wife is trying to hold the farm together un+l her husband can get out. She's not, however, very good at farm work, so she writes a leUer to him in jail: "Dear sweetheart, I want to plant the potatoes. When is the best +me to do it?" The farmer writes back: "Honey, don't go near that field. That's where all my guns are buried." But, because he is in jail all of the farmer's mail is censored. So when the sheriff and his depu+es read this, they all run out to the farm and dig up the en+re potato field looking for guns. AQer two full days of digging, they don't find one single weapon. The farmer then writes to his wife: "Honey, now is when you should plant the potatoes."

loved the NZMCA members Park Over with a retro Saloon complete with its own jail and vegetable garden. Next were two gardens in Greendale designed by Alfred Buxton in the 1920’s. Their amazingly tall trees, rhododendrons, groundcovers and formal rose gardens would certainly have been enjoyed by Alfred today. A European column wisteria walkway as well as a Japanese garden area, complete with three bridges, was delightful. In Darfield we visited a redeveloped garden transformed from Cotoneaster and natives into specimen trees and Rhodos. A Pittosporum grove is now a small pond, two water features, a dray full of hay in the long grass to attract nature’s creatures and a plough nestled amongst the shrubbery. The sun arrived in time for afternoon tea on Horndon Street where we viewed a newly designed garden with freesias flowering and took great pleasure listening to water trickling down stones into a small pond – a lovely end to the day.

The West Melton School Garden Group took a trip to Grandad’s garden in Kirwee on Friday, September 14th, to get ideas for their fantastic new vegetable garden that Mr Blondell (caretaker) has created at the School. The children got involved in planting out lettuces and covering them so they were protected from birds and rabbits. Everyone was fascinated by the tomato plants growing in the office and of course farm machinery is always a hit - however the pile of chicken poo wasn’t!!
