On Wednesday, September 12th about one hundred young skiers from the area took part in the annual Primary and Intermediate Schools’ Local Derby at Porters Ski Area. Participating schools enjoyed great skiing and weather conditions on the mountain. Porters snow sports staff set an excellent course for the students from years 1 - 8. The event also attracted many enthusiastic parents, teachers and supporters and generated a carnival atmosphere on the mountain. It is a team event, in which each of the four team members complete two runs, with the three fastest combined times becoming the team’s overall time.

On Sunday afternoon, September, 9th there was a community gathering at the Sheffield Community Hall to farewell Margaret Holliday. Holliday Margaret has lived in Sheffield for around eighty years and during that time has participated in numerous community activities in the area. Judith EarlEarl-Williams welcomed Margaret and her family and presented her with a beautiful corsage. Margaret wa s supported by family members,, Raymond and Diane, Diane Pamela, Pamela Leslie, Susan and granddaughter Lucy. Lucy Son, Stuart who is in England was unable to get home for the event. Margaret, who over the years, has been a Cub leader, secretary of Country Girls Sheffield, played bridge and bowls, was a member of the Garden Club, and Associated Presbyterian Women, (president and treasurer of the Christchurch branch). Margaret had had considerable involvement with the Play Centre organisation, in a variety of roles. Not forgetting the Sheffield Memorial Pool, Malvern A & P Association, church, plus many, many more local activities and clubs. Janet Taege a previous neighbour of Margaret’s spoke of the welcome and support she was shown after moving next

door, following her marriage. On behalf of Frances Smith who was unable to attend, Theckla Barnhill read her notes which covered Margaret’s assistance with catering for the Sheffield Ewe Fair. It was remembered that all water had to be boiled outside in the copper. As there was no stove available, the potatoes for lunch were prepared by local families and brought along ready cooked, in a relay system. Sawdust had to be spread on the Hall floor and o f c o ur s e c l e a n e d u p afterwards. The charges then were 40 cents for morning tea and $1.50 for lunch. Theckla went on to speak of Margaret's support of Red Cross, coffee mornings and the Ewe Fair support on behalf of the co-operating parish. “Margaret has always been very suppo rtiv e of what ever organisation she belonged to, as a committee member or supporting the committee,”

Theckla added. Wilma Webster spoke of Margaret's church commitment and more recently of Café Hope that started in Sheffield and presented her with a framed photo of St James’ Church. Keith Taege spoke of his family association with the Holliday Family and the church involvement. Maureen Frew presented Margaret with flowers on behalf of Helen Taege who was unable to attend. Jenny King then thanked Margaret for her support and encouragement over the years with Play Centre. Margaret replied thanking those who spoke, before her family thanked everyone for attending. Margaret is now settling into her new home in Lady Wigram Village, playing bridge, meeting new folk and taking part in ‘village life.’ The Sheffield community thanks Margaret and wishes her well.

Over the winter months (May-September) the ‘Sock Club’ get together on the third Monday of each month at Darfield Bakery to knit socks. They enjoy catching up with each other, sharing patterns and ideas, having a laugh, and enjoying great coffee. “It’s a very friendly group of ladies,” commented Val Gifford. The annual Country Fair and Craft Day takes place on the last Saturday of this month in Darfield. The Fair will run until early afternoon with indoor and outdoor market stalls, crafts, food, baked goods, furniture, antique stalls, toys, plants, wool and knitted apparel. Once again

the Country Fair and Craft Day will be joined by the Darfield Market stalls (from the Main Street Saturday market). Of course there’s the popular White Elephant stall (at the Trinity Hall across the parking lot - access from Greendale Road) filled with all sorts of goodies. Truly something for

everyone to wander around, have a look at and maybe buy a treasure or two. This poem, by Jacky Lawson, Lawson was inspired by last year’s assortment of goodies at the White Elephant Hall.

‘Trots at Mot’, and the first race meeting there for the 2018/19 season, isn’t far away. Trots at the Mot will take place at the end of September, at the Motukarara Raceway and it’s described as a fun family day out for everyone. Organisers have arranged children’s entertainment and comment that it’s a great day to pack a picnic and enjoy some fun. They have also planned for a

selection of food and drink outlets to be available for those attending. The first of the ten races for the day will start around lunchtime and this is an entry-free event. Check the website as there are a number of race meetings to be held at Motukarara over the summer. A competition is currently running on the Motukarara Raceway (Banks Peninsula TC)

On the evening of September 12th, thirty two, four person, teams took to the mats at the Darfield Recreation Centre, to participate in a fundraising Indoor Bowling tournament. The event was run by the Darfield Indoor Bowls Club to raise funds for the purchase of extra items of equipment for the local Darfield Hospital. All the teams entered represented local businesses, Clubs, organisations and families. Each team was required to have at least two people who were not regular Club level players. Prior to the event, members of the Darfield Indoor Bowling Club and The Friends of the Hospital, sought items for prizes and fundraising donations from the area. On the day of the tournament both organisations commented how delighted they were with the wonderful response they had received from the community. During the tournament all teams played three games lasting

thirty five minutes each, meeting a different four for each match. At the conclusion of the bowling action, it was reported that everyone was treated to a fine supper provided by the two organisations involved. There was also some time to socialise until the results of the raffle were read out. The quantity and range of prizes, all of which were donated, made for a wonderful display when they were brought into the Hall and set out on tables. “It was notable that several people had conspicuous success, when the names of the winners were read out,” added a spokesperson for the organisers. This tournament was first held in 1993, some twenty six years ago. It is noteworthy that the Darfield Indoor Bowls Club has been the key supporter and coorganiser of the tournament for the entire time. Brian Davidson, Chairperson of The Friends of the Hospital, said that the Bowls

Club is deserving of the highest accolade for their outstanding support over the years, which has resulted in thousands of dollars being raised from these annual tournaments. “This has assisted with the purchase of valuable items of equipment for the Hospital, with the help of our very supportive and generous community. Several long time members of the Friends of the Hospital, had played prominent roles in the organisation of the tournament since the beginning,” Brian added. “The Darfield Indoor Bowls Club always welcomes new members - please do contact a Club member if you are interested,” Brian concluded.

Insurance is one of those subjective things - how much do you need, want or have? We all insure our cars - possibly for too much, our houses - banks make sure we do, but what about you? There are so many products out there and what do they all mean? In a perfect world you would have enough insurance so that if you die, or worse be unable to work for the rest of your life, your insurance would kick in and financial loss would be minimal at worst. However this level of cover can be cost prohibitive for some, causing financial hardship in itself. Insurance is a minefield and the right cover for one does definitely not fit all. On Thursday, September 13th, Darfield Primary School presented their performance, ‘Scheherazade’ in the Darfield High School Hall. While the main roles were acted by Jack Guy, Guy Rachel McKenzie, McKenzie Sam van der Wilt, Wilt Jessica Lal, Lal Skye Collins, Collins Ryan Thomas and Tinura Gajamange, Gajamange the whole School was involved, in some capacity, in the production. A huge amount of practice and time went into getting the performance stage-ready. “Everybody learnt their lines and we had Kate Brunner pushing us to be our very best on stage,” Jack Guy one of the main cast members laughed. The Hall was packed to the gunnels as the audience waited in anticipation for the Show to begin, with everyone proclaiming it to be a fabulous performance by all the pupils involved. ‘Scheherazade,’ is about two children that begin their adventure after meeting an old man in a junk shop. The old ma n te ll s th e m abo ut Scheherazade, as he reads from the book ‘Tales of the Arabian Nights’. A Sultan, who used to be a good man but is now under a spell, has become bitter and cruel. He takes a new bride every night and kills her the following day. Scheherazade asks her father, to offer her hand in marriage to the Sultan. She regales the Sultan with interesting stories each evening that make him want to continue with her tales the following night. “The crowd really enjoyed

Complying with placement loca ons, allowed wording and a number of other direc ves brought with it more than a few logis cal nightmares when the trailer mounted electronic sign was parked in, and around, Darfield and surrounds recently. In a joint ini a ve between NZ Police and the Malvern Community Patrol the sign was part of a short-term trial in the Selwyn, Ashburton and Waimakariri districts a8emp ng to address traffic issues no ced in the locality. Malvern Community patrol monitored driver’s reac ons to the sign, as well as drivers’ obvious inability to stop at stop signs in the area, with the following results: With the electronic sign out - at a variety of intersec ons with known issues - over a 6.5 hour period: • 753 vehicles stopped, as they should • 112 vehicles rolled through (effec vely not stopping) • 100 vehicles didn’t bother to stop at all. • With no sign - at a variety of intersec ons with known issues - but only over a 1.5 hour period: • 142 vehicles stopped • 24 rolled through • 20 didn’t bother to stop • (if the 6.5 hour figures with the sign out were reduced to 1.5 hours, just for a comparison, they would look like this: 174 stopped, 26 rolled through, 23 didn’t bother to stop).

The ‘She Loves Golf’ event which took place on a very windy, Sunday, September 16th at Waimakariri Gorge Golf Course, attracted an outstanding crowd of twenty two women! It was reported that the age range of those attending was varied and they hailed from far and wide. Event co-ordinator Noeline Weavers organised the event through New Zealand Golf aided by Karen Battersby. Battersby Golf Professional, Kevin Hughes, Hughes spoke to those attending and gave helpful instruction on how to hold a club etc. He also spent time with each novice golfer, giving them advice and encouragement. “Having received a club and numerous balls each, they were let loose to ‘give golf a go!’,” laughed Karen Battersby. “Most

of the participants had never had a club in their hands, making for some amazing hits and some equally amazing misses. The group hit approximately seventy balls each, over a two hour period, so I’m picking there would be a few sore bodies the next day,” Karen added. Following the golf, coffee and cake was provided in the Club house and judging by the comments, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day with lots of laughter and promises to attend the next event. Organisers thank all those that assisted on the day (Val Val McKenzie, McKenzie Phil Rivers, Rivers Liz Steele and Mary Te Awa) Awa and remind intending golfers that ‘She Loves Golf’ will take place every second Sunday of the month.

To the Editors: In support of Andrew Horsburgh’s letter, our family are residents of Glentunnel and have also been affected by the constant noise of the mine. How the Council managed to approve the consent last year for the mine to operate 24 hours a day seven days a week so close to both villages without public notifications is disgraceful and can only make you wonder what is going on behind closed doors. The noise is heard in our house with double glazed windows closed. It is often difficult to get to sleep and both ourselves and our children wake throughout the night due to the noise. There appears to have been no action from the Council to date from the numerous complaints they have already received. I am sure if the Mayor or Council members lived in these areas affected by this noise pollution things would be different.

Darfield High School Senior A netball team recently took part in the South Island Secondary Schools’ Tournament, held in Dunedin between September, 3rd and 6th. The Darfield team competed in the B Grade division and came a creditable eighth out of thirty two teams. The team played some very close games coming away with five wins, one draw and two, very close, two goal losses. “This is an amazing team with a lot of talent,” was heard frequently. “They had a great young shooting circle and a couple of successful defensive combinations.” It was reported that the team had had an instructive season of learning and changing how they played. Putting all they had learnt throughout the season together and giving one hundred percent throughout the tournament. On the third day of competition Nic Kelly, Kelly team coach said “she wanted to give everyone court time so they could all have a run round. I

was extremely proud of the team and the way they have worked so hard all season, they gave everything their best even when they were tired after a fullon tournament,” Nic added. Team member Lucy Glassey, not only attended the tournament, but was also selected as a ‘Talented Player’. This was a huge achievement as only ten players out of the thirty two teams gained selection. This status was achieved after selectors identified suitable players on day one of the tournament, before watching them throughout the event. Players with the potential to be named as ‘talented players,’ needed to exhibit consistency of play and exceptional skill levels throughout the tournament. Lucy played W/A and C. “Lucy was a strong mid-court force with fantastic attacking play throughout the tournament,” Nic said proudly. Lucy commented, “throughout the four day tournament, selectors were walking around and observing games. With five to six games on at the same time in B grade, it was challenging to be noticed. However Emily Carter from Ellesmere College and I were privileged enough to be talent identified. This was a highlight of the four day tournament and wouldn’t have been able to be achieved without the help of my family, teammates, coach Nic and manager Laura Petersen,” Petersen Lucy finished.

Each year, Malvern School of Music (MSM) Students and their Tutors select their best pieces to play to an audience made up of Parents, Grandparents, and enthusiastic local music supporters. The concert which took place last weekend is undoubtedly the highlight of the School’s year, and a great way to showcase local musical talent. MSM students range in age from five years to mature seniors, and it was reported the many hours of practise paid off with wonderful performances. The first item on the programme was the Junior Violin group, led by Tutor Pauline Sewell. Sewell From just five years old, it was noted that these children were rather entertaining to watch, and were followed by Adele Langlands’ Keyboard group, and solo

pianists. Liz Nichol’s Guitar, Banjo and Vocal Performers shone, as did Timothy Sampson with a wonderful saxophone solo. Recorders, Senior Violins and Guitars followed, all with outstanding performances. The first half concluded with the Ukulele Group. After the interval, most of the players came together to form the MSM Orchestra. 41 players were conducted by Melissa Jebson, Jebson who was roped in at the last minute, and provided excellent renditions of George Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’, Hoagy Carmichael’s ‘Heart and Soul’, and Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’. The concert ended with much applause, and presentations to Melissa and James Morris, Morris who acted as Sound Manager. MSM also thank their administrator

One hundred and thirty, Year 9 Social Studies students from Darfield High School participated in a very successful plant out day on Monday, September 10th, when they planted four hundred native plants at the Joyce Reserve in Glentunnel. This event was facilitated by Lou Drage from Te Ara Kākāriki who was able to secure generous grants from Central Plains Water Ltd and was assisted by Phillip, Paul and Jules, members of the Coalgate/Glentunnel Reserve Management Committee. Earlier in the year, the School’s Social Studies classes had been exploring sustainable practices in the community with specific focus on - waterways, the issues with plastic in oceans and also a more local focus on the Selwyn River/Waikirikiri. Alongside planting native plants to help Te Ara Kākāriki with their goal of increasing native vegetation on the Plains from a current 1% coverage to 10%, while also creating a corridor from the Alps to the sea to support and encourage the return of native birdlife to

the Plains, students also participated in water quality activities assisted by Waterwatch. Waterwatch, initially began twenty years ago at Lincoln University, and provide a unique outdoor experience for schools and community groups. They engage people in assessing the health of their local streams, rivers or ponds in a safe and ecologically friendly way. Participants undertake a range of hands-on tasks using scientific equipment to monitor the physical, chemical and biological parameters of waterways. Students studied the macro invertebrates, making connections with the samples and what it indicated about the health of the River. They also carried out scientific tests on the quality of the water, measuring the phosphates and nitrate levels. “It was concerning to note a rise in nitrate levels from typical readings, at the Glentunnel site,” commented Anna Lee the Darfield High School teacher in charge of the initiative.

“Evidence the River is degrading further upstream,” she added. “This experience provided real tangible learning opportunities for the students, enabling them to become active citizens in a local community restoration project and encouraging our students to care for their local waterways. We look forward to participating in future projects to help care and protect our precious waterways,” Anna concluded.

There’s a new youth event coming to Selwyn in the October school holidays. Residents from thirteen to eighteen years of age are being invited to join the Selwyn Youth Council with support from the Selwyn District Council in a fun, action-packed week of Boost events. Selwyn Youth Council Chairperson Paige Sullivan said the creation of the new youth event is in response to feedback about a lack of things to do in Selwyn for teenagers, particularly during the school holidays. “We looked at the huge success of KidsFest, an event aimed at children under the age of thirteen during the July school holidays, and thought we should

Sunday, September 30th will see the twenty first Oxford Country Classic take place. Organised by the Oxford Squash Club as a major fundraiser the event offers a half marathon class, along with twelve and seven kilometre runs and walks. Organisers report that many competitors have returned to participate year after year and they look forward to welcoming them back once again, along with those embarking on the event for the very first time. The number of entries determines the amount raised from the Country Classic and the Oxford Squash Club appreciates the opportunity to return these funds to its Club.
