When Darfield High School student and second year referee, Tom Welch attended the Canterbury Referee Awards on Saturday, September 1st at the Christchurch RSA it was to receive the award for ‘Most Promising 1st or 2nd Year Referee’. This follows on from last year when he won the Canterbury wide trophy for best 1st Year referee. Tom was nominated by North Canterbury Referee Association - all nominations then go to forward to the Canterbury selection panel where they select the winner from North Canterbury, Ellesmere and Metropolitan Areas. This award is awarded to a referee that is seen to have the potential to go on to referee at senior and representative rugby level. Tom referees for North Canterbury JAB, Under 16 grade, combined competition with Ellesmere. “Tom had had a great year and progressed well through the grades with the help of Alan Stead, his referee coach. The CRRA has given Tom opportunities to advance and show his potential as a referee with further advancement likely,” Tom’s dad George Welch said proudly. George also received a Canterbury wide award for Outstanding Contribution to Referee Coaching. Supply of stock for the Gnomes Alpine Sports annual sale, which begins Friday, September 7th, is at an all-time low due to unprecedented sales throughout the season. That’s not to say, however that there aren’t bargains, great bargains, to be had with savings of up to 25% on this season’s equipment, clothing and accessories. “Although its been a fairly average year for snow, conditions have been good throughout the season and our sales have reflected this,” said Gnomes co-owner Ally Kerr. Kerr “We’ve had the busiest season on record with huge increases in our boot fitting and ski workshop servicing areas,” he added. “If we’re honest, this season has really caught us off guard, we didn’t expect to see such big increases,” Leith and Ally Kerr, Store owners added. Ally continued, “the big investment in both customised ski boot fitting and extensive workshop machinery is definitely paying off. We are attracting customers from throughout New Zealand, as well as overseas, who appreciate our skill and the knowledge gained from many year’s experience.” For savvy shoppers the Gnomes sale will enable them to get hold of this season’s products at sale prices, before taking advantage of some of the great spring skiing throughout the South Island, with Mt Hutt planning to be open until mid October. For Gnomes however that signals the start of their second season, which takes place in December/January as skiing aficionados head to the northern hemisphere to get their fix. “Gnomes continues to trade through the summ er months,” Ally said, “and along with our second season in December and January there’s always gift buying for Christmas and dispatching numerous goods purchased on our busy website.”

Garden Centre will now play in the district. Substantial alterations have taken place and they would love for people to come and join celebrating this opening with them. There will be muffins, cucumber sandwiches, hot and cold drinks to enjoy while you have a look around at all the fantastic changes that have taken place at the Darfield Eco Garden Centre. There will be some background entertainment and the children can enjoy having their face painted as part of the celebration, while you enjoy browsing for your spring gardening needs. A special guest, Rosalie Snoyink, Snoyink one of the early owners will be in attendance to chat to people about the history of the Garden Centre. Jane and Rex hope to see lots of you at the opening. Well the fly and spider season seems to be a bit earlier this year. The warmer weather has white tail spiders out and about and of course many people are calling us to help them with these unpleasant squatters in their homes. These guys are nocturnal and are normally only seen during the day if they are disturbed; for instance tidying drawers or wardrobes. If you have lived in a house that had whitetails and you have moved houses, you will have more than likely brought them with you to your new home. The treatment we use controls spiders and flies, it doesn't kill them instantly (as anything that potent wouldn't be safe for the occupants of the house) it takes three to four hours to shut down the nervous system of a whitetail. Sometimes after treatment, home owners are astounded to see a whitetail

they never knew they had, on the carpet or out on the wall, unable to move. This is the nervous system shutting down and the spider is unable to get back to cover. Mostly they are just found dead under a couch or behind a wardrobe. The best time to see if you have whitetails is if you get up in the night and look along the edges

of the skirting, or along the top of the wall. If you have the old style down lights they can quite often be seen on the ceiling near these, as they have come through from the roof space. If you need a quote or advice please call Spiderban.

“Ten minutes of movement each day is all we need to keep our bodies strong, fit and healthy”, said Ainsley Burton of Springfield’s Rejuvenateyou Fitness Centre. That is exactly what was celebrated on Saturday, September 1st, at the Rejuvenateyou Hub in Springfield. It was a glorious first day of Spring for this wonderful event. Planned activities of hula hooping with Bernie from In2Hula, bouncy castle, yoga with Hanna, Hanna netball games, indoor bowls at the Springfield Hall, circuit exercises, boxing as well as people heading out for a bike ride, walk and a run. There was also great support from others partaking in their activities including skiing, hiking,

“I love this time of year, days are getting longer and warmer. Spring is in the air, and so is the pollen. Did you know that almost all modern vehicles are fitted with an internal filter in the heater and cooling fan system? This filter goes by many names, cabin, allergen, pollen, dust, and as the names suggest it is primarily for removing dust and allergens from entering the inside of the vehicle. It also stops leaves from getting into the heater fan motor and here in rural settings we almost always see signs of mice or rats. The fibrous particulate filter is normally located behind the glove box and is usually fairly easy to check. We had a customer complaining about poor fan operation the other day and he wasn’t getting enough wind from his fan vents. It ended up being as simple as replacing a very blocked cabin filter. We recommend checking this filter every service. We have seen a lot of mice and rat activity recently under the bonnets of cars and utes we have been working on, evident in foot prints and droppings. I even saw little foot prints inside the rear plastic trim, by the vehicle jack, in an SUV the other day. Rodents seem to love nibbling on electrical wires and rubber hoses, both not good if they do bite through. If you do see activity around your house or garage don’t forget to bait or trap around your vehicle. Spring is nesting time for birds too, while they don’t normally ‘eat’ your vehicle they can build nests

inside engine bays that have been known to catch fire once the engine is running. My thought of the month. While driving to work at 100kph the other day, from West Melton to Darfield. I found myself admiring the beauty for the Southern Alps as the sun was just starting to hit the fresh snow. I thought to myself what a beautiful place to live and work and how lucky I was to be here. I had to stop and take a photo at Aylesbury Corner of the hills. Then I caught a glimpse of the sunrise behind me. Amazing red and crimson colours. 360 degrees of stunning beauty. As we hurtle through life, remember to stop and look around every now and again and be thankful for where we are. Happy and safe motoring”.

Kirwee Model School knows exactly what 21st century learning is all about. For the past term and a half Kirwee students have been focussed on designing, creating and coding robots using Lego Mindstorms kits and app software. Two Lego Mindstorms kits were given to the school by the Christchurch division of Scott Technology, with the aim of providing the school the opportunity of being involved in the Robocup NZ Junior Competition. Although Kirwee is a small country school, it entered two teams of year six students into the ‘Theatre Performance’ section of the competition. Although neither team placed, both presentations were highly entertaining and showcased the learners’ ability to design and programme a robot and create a performance around this. The Kirwee students were extremely fortunate to have the expertise of Avery Dean and Ness Arps, Arps two year seven robotics enthusiasts from Christchurch’s Ao Tawhiti School. These students travelled to Kirwee twice weekly to share their robotics knowledge and upskill the Kirwee students.

The older students were very impressed with their younger prodigies. “They did amazingly in Robocup. When we first started the Kirwee students didn’t know anything, they really didn’t know what Mindstorms was. The robots Kirwee built are amazing. Learning how to use sensors was a new concept and they learnt a lot while getting ready for the competition,” Ness said. Avery was also very happy with the outcome. “The ultimate goal was to create a character that could interact with other people and Kirwee did. They have gone into a competition and they’ve done something new and different with it. August at last and once again the Darfield teams travelled to Central Otago to contest the Bodkin Shield. This year we were able to field two teams designated team Red and team Black. Most of the group travelled to the Omakau Hotel to take up lodgings on the Thursday and on Friday morning gathered at Moa Creek Gun Club to sign in, squad up and check, recalculate handicap marks. Sadly for Duncan Jefferis this meant a twenty two metre Handicap for doing so well last year, but for Rupert Wright the other end of the scale up on twelve metres with Marcel van Leeuwen. The weather wasn’t the best, a bit dull and drizzly and this was reflected in the group scores. Possibles were scored by Robert Bampton and

Johnny Sharp (one each) with Dave Folley and Bevan Brown scoring two apiece. Both squads shot well with nine other scores of 19/20 posted for the first day. With the end of proceedings we retired to the Hotel for liquid refreshments and the team dinner, a good time was had by all, but not too good as we had to prepare for day two! Day two at Alexandra Gun Club and a slow start with fog drifting through the target ranges. The first two matches off handicap marks and Paul Templeton and Dave Pitkethley picked up two possibles each, Robert and Bevan another one each and Murray Robertson his first for the trip. With that completed it was on to the Bodkin with fifteen targets

To the Editors: The Selwyn District Council has told me that the monkey bars and parallel bars in Almond Park were removed because the equipment was old and they wanted to reduce the “footprint”. They also said that the edging needed to be replaced so it was easier to demolish the equipment than replace the edging. The Eiffel Tower is old and takes up a “footprint” but it still stands. I have again asked the council to replace this equipment and to apologise to our children. Children have no right to vote but this does not mean that we have the right to destroy their playground. Their right to play on these items has been removed forever by the Council.

Rupert led off for the Red team with 13/15 while Duncan countered with fifteen to get the Black team off to a good start. Marcel kept the Red team going with twelve as did Tony Stuart for the Black team. The teams then diverged with Bevan, Ben Sharp and Paul all scoring possibles for the Black team while Murray with fourteen, Robert a fifteen and Johnny another fourteen tried to keep up. And lastly the anchor men, Dave P a thirteen for the Red and Dave F for the Black finishing with a fourteen. Team scores Black 86/90 and Red 81, unfortunately neither team qualified for the shoot-off with a score of 88 for three other teams. This left the third round and a possible for Johnny. Day 3 at Wanaka Gun Club with very good conditions, no wind and bright sunlight. But for our teams it was a case of maybe next year! Just the two possibles, one to Marcel and one to Bevan (thanks to a very sharp eyed referee). Not the finish we were hoping for at all, but that’s how it goes sometimes. So it will be August 2019 when we will try again.

Darfield will have a Premier Team in the competition this year with Greendale being the development/feeder team. There will also be a Darfield/ Kirwee combined Year 9/10 team entering under the Selwyn Lions Club banner. Darfield along with all other local Clubs will try and field teams in Section 1 - 4.

Malvern Community Board MeeEng Monday, August 27th 2018 • At the latest Malvern Community Board meeting in Darfield, local

Darfield Police officer, Officer Andy Grant, Grant updated the Board on current issues around the area. He said there were still a few crashes, mostly at intersections where people fail to give way or stop. He told the Board there were a couple of issues with security; people leaving keys around the home where they’re easy to find. Officer Grant and his colleagues also work with local schools and recently talked about anti-bullying at one of these. • Nick Pratt and Matt Collier, Collier representing the Sheffield School Board of Trustees, spoke to the Board about a proposal to extend the School Car Park. They noted it was a busy area with buses and vehicles, leaving children exposed to potentially dangerous situations. Council staff would look into the proposal. • Council’s Asset Manager, Murray Washington, Washington was in attendance and provided the Board with an update on Malvern Wastewater issues. He told the Board the biggest cost for any future Darfield / Kirwee scheme was not the treatment, but the actual reticulation. Staff are undertaking a study on the future impact on those towns if they did not have a wastewater treatment system. He said that Government’s 3 Waters Review was consuming a lot of resource. He also noted the timeline for chlorination of the Malvern Hills (Hartleys Road) water supply. • The Board was pleased to learn that Council’s CCO, SICON Limited, has achieved finalist status in the Champion Canterbury Awards, in particular in the Workplace Safety Category. • Board members also discussed matters relevant to their communities raised in the various meetings they attended for example, the Springfield Township Committee hoping to purchase Christmas decorations to put up in the main street; seismic strengthening of the Sheffield / Waddington Hall commencing soon; presentations on the Alpine Fault being held around the District; Malvern Community Arts Council working towards an anniversary exhibition of paintings and 3D work; water race closures and reviewing Council bylaws. • A letter received from the Malvern Community Patrol was tabled by the Chairperson. It relates to the Bray Street / State Highway 73 corner with a request to review the current kerbing to ensure more people stop. Staff commented that this was more an issue of driver behaviour rather than intersection layout. The layout cannot be changed as it has to allow for vehicles, particularly truck and trailer units, to be able to make a turn without driving over the kerb. Staff will also refer the comments to the Road Safety Committee and the NZTA as it relates to a State Highway.
