Over 800 people spent Sunday, August 26th at the Darfield Domain and Recreation Centre, attending this year’s ‘Have a Go Day’, in glorious weather. “It was a fantastic day, and I’m sure some of the young people will have gone from having a go, to being a perman ent participant,” said Senior Events and Recreation Advisor, Dave Tippett. Tippett One hundred and fifty, ‘Have a Go Day’ passports were returned and indicated that approximately 15% of people were willing to volunteer at a local club. This is fantastic news for local sport and recreation clubs, showing that there are plenty of people still willing to volunteer their time to help. “An example of this was evident at the Malvern Netball Centre’s demonstration where a number

of people had a go at umpiring. Some of these people now want to take their first time experience further,” a Netball spokesperson said. Malv er n Net ba l l C e ntr e organising group, Melissa George and Victoria Leech had a very busy day with over seventy people trying netball and having their passports signed off. They held a goal shooting competition which was a fabulous addition to their station and offered two Mainland Tactix’ balls as prizes. There was a large group of around thirty volunteers made up of Club and rep players, officials, Club committee members and Malvern members helping with this station. People aged from four to sixty three years old all had a go at netball.

Dave added, “for the first time in a very long time, more girls wanted to learn how to skateboard than boys. This is fantastic because nationally half as many young females skateboard than young males according to the Active NZ survey. This is good news for ska te boardi ng with i t becoming an Olympic sport in Tokyo 2020,” he added. “In all, everyone was smiling and trying a variety of sport and recreation activities due to the passport initiative (needing five stamps from five different activities to enter the prize draw),” Dave concluded.

Selwyn Gallery invite the community to join them for a creative stroll down memory lane with their September exhibition ‘Blast from the Past’! Featuring Caroline Bartholomew, Amelia Guild, Rachael Inch, Anneke Stewart and Janna van Hasselt; Hasselt these artists have all exhibited with Selwyn Gallery previously. They are proud to play a role in their continuing journey - all juggling the demands of a busy family and working life, alongside their arts’ practice. Caroline Bartholomew has been teaching and making art periodically for over fifteen years. Her series of work ‘a flutter of colour’ is intended to be enjoyed at a glance, a pop of colour and texture with a subject matter of kea, tui and piwakawaka. Amelia Guild is a full time artist and actress (Amelia Amelia Dunbar) Dunbar amidst juggling the demands of motherhood. Growing up on a

high country station, she has always been interested in depicting the world around her; more specifically cattle. Amelia has found great enjoyment in showing her love for cattle through texture, gesture and palette. Rachael Inch has an extensive history of promoting and supporting the arts in Selwyn alongside her own visual arts practice. Acrylic and ink abstract works representing minerals and crystals spark memories of the magnificent and sometimes fleeting moments experienced throughout life - communicating without the use of words. Anneke Stewart seeks to visualise and manifest art works that personify the energy of earthly existence, attempting to dr aw a tt e nt i o n t o t he importance of living conscious and sustainable lives. Her main objective is to create finely crafted New Zealand made design and art works, making

quality items using locally sourced materials and labour. Janna van Hasselt studied Printmaking at the Ilam School of Fine Arts. She then travelled extensively, where her love affair with clay began. During her graduate study in Chicago Janna was introduced to handbuilding, mould-making and extrusion techniques, as well as alternative approaches to clay.

The Nourish biennial grafting day is almost here. This is a practical workshop where grafting will be demonstrated, and those attending will have the chance to practice, and obtain scion wood to graft on to their home orchard. Grafting is the process of adding other varieties to an existing tree. This is much simpler than many people expect, but learning techniques and the care of the grafts is essential. Grafting has many advantages ie: to increase the varieties of fruit without having to buy more trees; successive ripening on the same tree; introducing a pollinator on the same tree; the ability to ‘change the fruit’ of a poorly performing tree. There is nothing quite like picking fruit from a home

orchard that has been tree ripened, and with no, or minimal, sprays. Apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, plums are all easily grafted. For example a Royal Gala apple could have some Granny Smith, Red Delicious or Sturmer added, giving a longer fruiting season, without having to plant another tree. Maybe transform that wild plum the birds sowed, into a productive ‘triple graft Green Gage/Coes Golden Drop/Duffy’s Early Jewel variety. This session focusses on fruit, but flowering cherries are also an option. Anyone interested in home grown fruit and who would like to learn about grafting or improve their current grafting skills, are welcome to join the

group. There will be experienced people on hand to help and a pair of secateurs and a grafting knife will be necessary. The Two Rivers Community Trust ‘Nourish’ programme is all about people relating together around gardens and food. “We enjoy growing nutritious food,” said Paul Cossey of Two Rivers Community Trust. “Our regular monthly meetings are on the last Thursday each month at the Darfield Baptist Church and our September meeting will be about seed sowing and propagating.”

Darfield resident Judy Clinton drops off her beautifully knitted items to the local Four Square supermarket and the owner takes them to Christchurch on her behalf. Judy donates not only her time, but also the yarn for this project and they are most appreciatively received by the parents of some very tiny, new-borns. Once again thankyou Judy for spending the time and sourcing the materials to make these little garments for some very small and vulnerable recipients.

The group performed at Westmar Senior Care where the residents joined in tapping their feet and singing along. It was reported that fun was had by all!

Stop and Give-Way intersections are still causing issues for both locals and tourists with two crashes during the last month. Over recent weeks the Malvern Community Patrol have had their trailer and lighted information board set up on the approach to various ’Stop’ intersections locally to enforce the message to road users about stopping at ‘Stop’ intersections. Local Darfield and Selwyn Police actively patrol these intersections in the district and this last weekend several motorists were stopped and issued infringement notices for failing to stop at ‘Stop’ intersections in the Darfield township. 100 percent of these motorists were local residents! The infringement for failing to stop at a ‘Stop’ intersection is a $150 fine and twenty demerit points on your licence. There is currently a telephone scam where people are being called on their landlines by scammers purporting to be from Spark and advising them that they have an issue with their router. I personally received such a call last week from a man with an accent more like he was from Mumbai, than New Zealand. The best advice in these situations is to hang up on the caller. Never ever enter a code into your computer that the scammer is requesting you to do! Never ever give out your personal information, or bank account numbers, over the phone. There is also a scam at the moment going around some businesses which use EPay.

Again, do not take for granted a random caller advising they are from EPay and there is a fault with your system and to put in a specific code. Best to hang up straight away and call EPay and speak with their management. Most of these scammers will be overseas based; they are well rehearsed and will sound very

convincing. Good to see the Crusaders having another great season. Beauden Barrett surely answered his critics of recent weeks with his outstanding performance against the Wallabies on Saturday night!

A function was recently held to mark the retirement of Nancy Dimmock who has worked at the Darfield Medical Centre (as Practise Manager) for over 45 years. It was a large gathering of current and former staff who have worked with her in that time. Nancy (nee Vigers) Vigers grew up in Sheffield and her first job was at the pathology laboratory in Kilmore St for three years, before attaining this position in Darfield with Doctors Denis Eason and Richard Evans. Evans Initially she really enjoyed learning how the tests done at the laboratory related to general practice and how the various illnesses were treated based on those test results. Another enjoyment was getting to know so many local residents, eventually feeling there was hardly anyone in the district she didn’t recognise. Things were very different back in 1973. The pay for one $36.00 for forty hours, or 90c

an hour. In the 1970’s and 80’s the doctor delivered all the babies. When a baby was arriving the doctor would suddenly leave and be away for anything from ten minutes to more than an hour. It was a challenge to juggle the patients so the waiting room was neither full of people, nor empty on their return. They didn’t appreciate either situation! In the early days all invoices for unpaid fees from family account cards, which were filled in daily, were written by hand - farmers n e v e r p a i d c a s h! T h e introduction of the computer changed all that. 1978 brought a massive change with Dr Eason building himself a new house and selling the existing one to the Selwyn District Council to be converted to a medical centre, rather than doctor’s rooms attached to a house. It was a cold and draughty building to work in, taking until lunch time to warm up in winter! The first major change Nancy faced was the instigation of ACC in April 1974 bringing a totally new concept to injury claims, then in 1986 it was learning how to work with the introduction of GST. But the biggest change to the role definitely came with the purchase of the Centre’s first computer. The building of the new medical centre was the biggest drama affecting all the staff. What should have been an exciting time turned into a nightmare which saw everyone finally move

The setting up of the West Melton rooms, whilst yet another major timeconsuming project, did however run smoothly. There was no practice nurse in the surgery until the 1980’s and it is a role which has changed dramatically over the years. “In fact it now seems there is more administration to be done than the actual nursing of patients,” Nancy commented. “The practice has been lucky to have such a skilled and dedicated team over the years.” Many stories can be told of unforgettable days. “There have been some incredibly sad days when we have lost favourite patients and days of complete shock over tragedies which have affected us. “I have developed a great rapport with many patients over time, although some have also presented a challenge. I do think that as a rule our rural patients are especially friendly. “The reception team has been remarkably stable over the years with a strong loyalty among us, and everyone willing to step in to help when the need arose. In the fifty years from 1964 to 2014 just eight receptionists have been employed at Darfield, with only two leaving. An amazing record of loyalty and commitment from a dedicated team.”

F234 P5267869 P3:;<=7> The Daffodil Rally for Cancer held last Sunday was a huge success, thanks to brilliant spring weather which bought out the owners of vintage and classic cars, and motorcycles, in their hundreds to enjoy the event. Organised as a fundraising event for the Cancer Society by the Canterbury Branch of the Vintage Car Club, the event was an open invitation to owners of ‘special and loved’ vehicles to get their vehicles out for the day.

The day started with registration and morning tea at the VCC grounds in McLean’s Island Road, Christchurch, followed by a series of rallies all around the Selwyn District which visited local museums, the Selwyn Art Gallery in Darfield, or just provided an opportunity for a scenic outing into the District. All of the rallies returned to the VCC grounds, where a barbeque lunch and a simple prize-giving was held. The event organiser, Colin Hey

from West Melton, estimated around 500 vehicles turned up for the event, ranging from early Model T Fords right through to brand-new Holdens and Ford Mustangs. This included a huge variety of cars from all years, makes and models, about twenty motorcycles, and even an old restored tractor! Although the final outcome isn’t yet known, it’s estimated the event raised around $6,000 for the Cancer Society Daffodil Day appeal. The Vintage Car Club sincerely thanks everyone who took part and made the day such a success.

On Tuesday, August 14th Year six learners from West Melton attended a plant-out day at the Kowhai Sanctuary on Thompsons Road where they helped plant over four hundred native plants. They also studied aquatic invertebrates from the Waimakariri River and terrestrial invertebrates (bugs) in the plants from previous years’ plantings. The Windwhistle School community have been working hard collecting cans to help stock foodbanks around the country, during the ‘Wattie’s Cans for Good,’ initiative which ran from August, 13th - 24th. More than 30,000 families are expected to need food and other relief from the Salvation Army this winter and Salvation Army head of welfare services Major Pam Waugh commented that food support over this time can help families facing desperate choices, including choosing between heating and eating. This year will also celebrate 25 years of the long-standing relationship between Wattie’s and The Salvation Army. Over this period Wattie’s has run high-profile, public-facing can fundraising campaigns

supported with matched donations from Wattie’s to restock foodbank shelves at critical times of the year when demand for food support can outstrip supply. To date nearly 1.4 million cans have been donated through this partnership. The goal for 2018 is to collectively donate over 110,000 cans; Wattie’s have kick started the campaign with a donation of 25,000 cans. As well as can collection, the Wattie’s Cans For Good campaign goes beyond other fundraisers combining a charity collection activity with a creative competition and a set of teacher based resource sheets which are designed to engage children and teachers, in a fun, teambased giving and learning experience. All cans are given to the

Salvation Army for use in local foodbanks enabling kindergartens and schools to make a direct and real difference to those in need in their community. Windwhistle School have had some very generous donations from their School families to help support this worthy cause and a large number of cans were delivered to the collection point last week.

Eighteen year old Jordan Riki has just had his talent in, and dedication to, the sport of Rugby League recognised in the form of a three year contract. Jordan who is the son of ex local woman, Janelle RikiRiki-Waaka and whose grandparents Sheryl and Reg Riki (ex-publicans at the Sheffield Hotel), still reside in the area, now has a full time

three year NRL contract with the Brisbane Broncos. Jordan was on a three year development contract with the Broncos before attaining this recent contractual agreement. Jordan has definitely put in the hard yards and dedication to get to where he is today, and needless to say, Jordan’s family are not only incredibly proud, but also now Broncos supporters!

When the Malvern Football team competed at English Park ASB Stadium in the Canterbury Primary Schools Winter Tournament recently (August 23rd), it was the end of an era for their coach Tracy Black Clark. Tracy’s dedication has seen her coach the team and accompany them to this tournament for six years, but this year was her last. Ninety one schools attended this year’s tournament with 1788 children participating in four sports; hockey, netball, football and rugby. “A huge thanks also to our team manager Finn Clark, Clark referees Isaac Earl and Jack Kennedy,” Kennedy Tracy said.

Darfield! For a number of years now, local facilitators Katie Snyder and Kerry Gosset have bought the Nedley Depression and Anxiety Recovery programme to Darfield with great results. Founder of the programme is Dr Neil Nedley, Nedley an Internal Medicine Physician from the US. When over half of his patients were presenting with depression or anxiety, his specialised training taught him to look for the cause, not simply to treat the symptoms. So he researched medical literature and clinical trials to find answers. He found over one hundred things that cause

depression and over one hundred things that can help it. Putting it all together he launched his findings in a community programme where the participants are coached to make simple lifestyle changes to

remove the underlying causes. “It’s not rocket science, but it does work and most of the locally run programmes have shown a 75% improvement overall in just eight short weeks,” Kerry and Katie

said. “If you are out there in your own private world fighting off the 'Black Dog' on a daily basis, we want you to know that there is help and it would be our privilege to work with you to discover hope and healing.”
