The Malvern Netball Centre held their Finals’ Day on Saturday, August 18th at the Darfield Netball Courts in what turned out to be great weather. Throughout the day there were some fantastic games played with a few tightly contested finals. The Intermediate Grade (Yrs 7 & 8) game was won by South Malvern MnM’s with a seven goal difference over Kirwee Panthers. It was a showcase of the up and coming talent in the Malvern area. In the Social Grade the Springfield/

Sheffield Nexteam took out the honours over Darfield Goal Diggers. The High School Grade Final between Darfield Phoenix and Darfield Hurricanes was won by the Hurricanes with a four goal margin. The Premier Final between Kirwee Senior and Darfield Seniors was won by Kirwee with a six goal margin. However the score didn’t reflect the game and the Darfield Senior team showed skill and determination right until the final whistle.

Michelle Jones has been a qualified driving instructor for eighteen months now and loves every minute of it. I get so much pleasure from seeing my clients passing their test first time, as well as seeing how happy, confident and empowered they are,” Michelle added. Michelle, who is in her early 50's, has lived locally since 1999 and during this time she has built up a vast network of acquaintances, friends and connections; forming close ties with many. “I take pride in my work and I am passionate about offering a duty of care,” Michelle said. “Initially I began teaching teens, that I was acquainted with, and they all passed first time; it was then I decided to turn my skill into employment, gain the necessary qualifications, and offer my services to the area. “In the past I have been a volunteer for a pilot Teen Restricted Driving Programme, run in conjunction with Selwyn District Council and Lincoln Community Care, when my two clients passed, I was thrilled for them.” Michelle then went on to study a Defensive Driving Course, followed by a NZTA Approved Qualified Driving Instructor’s Certificate. She has also just completed a current first aid certificate. “I not only teach teens looking to acquire their first licence, but I am experienced in helping those of any age that may be anxious, have l earn ing challenges such as dyslexia or ADHD, or more elderly drivers needing to retain their licences. I can teach a driver in a manual car, as well as an automatic, and I provide an extensive range of tips and information to make the process go smoothly. “To sum up I can just say - I love teaching and I love the challenge,” Michelle concluded.

Watch for the much-needed and for many, long-awaited, changes taking place at the Darfield Eco Garden Centre. Housed in the beautiful old building, that is also home to The Fat Beagle Café and The Darfield Gift Gallery, on Darfield’s South Terrace. Eco Garden Centre owners Jane Vaissaire and Rex Verity want to focus on what they do best and provide a customer and knowledge based service to Malvern and its surrounding neighbours. “Having a small gift area attached to the Garden business just didn’t add up,” Jane explained. “We wanted to be fully involved in the Eco Garden Centre, not a florist, not a gift shop.” The building has recently changed hands and with the assigning of new leases it seemed the ideal time for all the tenants to work together and co -operate to enhance each of their individual businesses. The Darfield Eco Garden Centre has seen concrete pads being laid and trenches being dug to create an office and customer service facility in the nursery area. This will also stock gardening gifts and accessories. The Fat Beagle Café will undergo alterations to open into the old Garden Centre gift area and Jane commented that there will be nothing nicer than to enjoy a café coffee, or meal, before heading out into the Garden Centre for a browse.

After some dreaming and good planning, the Malvern Combined Probus Club was launched on August, 4th 2003, with 147 keen foundation members. The number had to be capped, and fifteen years later the Group have sixty two of those foundation members still actively involved! That continuing interest proves the valuable role that the Club plays in this community for those who have retired. The current membership is stable at around one hundred and seventy, with new inductees most months. The programmes and activities of Probus are based on the ideals of promoting fun, fellowship and friendship in its community and new members are always welcome, although there is often a waiting list! On Monday, August 13th, the Club held its fifteenth birthday celebrations at the Recreation Centre in Darfield. Current President Robyn Wendt and her committee recognised in several enjoyable ways, the input of all the members over the past fifteen years. Two Life Members were recognised with certificates and badges, and sixty two

Founding Members were each presented with a certificate that recognised their fifteen years of dedication and loyal service to the Club. Committee Members provided a scrumptious morning tea, with a lovely birthday cake. Three official guests were welcomed, including Dave Wilson, Wilson CEO of Sicon Ltd, who sponsor the Club by printing their monthly newsletter, which is very much appreciated by Malvern Probus.

The Club was also presented with a fifteen year certificate from Probus International. A very entertaining speaker drew many laughs from the audience, and twenty four members were recipients of a mystery prize draw. Finally, for the eighty who were able to stay for lunch, the Kirwee Bowling Club catering group made it all very worthwhile with a beautiful three course meal.

Local girl Georgie Sarginson will leave for Queensland, Australia on August, 24th to represent New Zealand in the Trans Tasman Challenge for Rodeo. Georgie, a student at Darfield High School, is one of eleven high school students from throughout New Zealand that have been selected to compete in three rodeos in Australia. Because her family are heavily involved in the sport, Georgie has been attending rodeos ever since she was born and during her lifetime she has travelled from Invercargill to Whangarei for them! Georgie began barrel racing about five years ago when she started riding her mum Nicole's roping horse. She went on to win a national title in the 2016/17 season, riding a new horse, and was second in New Zealand last year. A lot of time and training goes into getting ready for rodeos and competition, and dedicated Georgie rides six days a week. The Trans Tasman Challenge consists of four events, break away roping, barrel racing, bull riding and steer riding. Georgie and two other barrel racers are drawn a different horse at each of the rodeos. They will have only just met these horses and are given fifteen minutes to get to know them before they have to run the barrels. While this can be extremely challenging it is an amazing experience for the riders participating. This will be Georgie's third trip to Australia, representing New Zealand, so she does have an idea of what to expect. During the ten days away they will travel to Rockhampton, Capella and Yepoon to compete against the Australian High School team. Georgie admits to feeling rather excited at having this opportunity again this year and she and her team are wished the best of luck in their competition.

Mt Cheeseman Ski Field received a fresh dusting of snow from Mother Nature immediately prior to the Primary and Intermediate Schools’ race day on Sunday, August 19th. That, along with some great grooming by their ‘Men in Black’ and a fantastic race course set by the Cheeseman Ski School, meant an outstanding day for all. The Ski Field was checked and prepped thanks to the Ski field Patrollers, and the day was planned and under control thanks to Cheeseman’s Events’

Team. The Field welcomed a full complement of racers all ready to go and provided live race results so progress could be monitored during the day. Springfield School again featured throughout the top three results in each year bracket - obviously living near the snowline has its advantages! Celebrating the best of Canterbury Business is the Westpac Champion Business Awards which recognise the excellence, innovation, and success of businesses and charities in the region. The Awards programme have celebrated Canterbury business excellence, innovation and success for fifteen years and the star-studded awards ceremony (taking place on September 19th) has seen 15,000 attendees, acknowledged 650 finalists, and celebrated 240 winners. The awards are a six month journey starting with nominations and entries from the region defined by the Canterbury Regional Council boundaries, which include nine District Councils and the Christchurch City Council. Local Selwyn business Sicon Ltd have recently been named as a finalist in the ACC Champion Workplace Safety Award. This award recognises businesses that demonstrate excellence in health and safety systems and procedures while creating a

positive health and safety culture. The category is open to any o r g a n i s at i o n w ho h a v e exemplary workplace safety procedures in place and for those reaching the finalist status ACC will undertake checks as part of the performance assessment process. This category attracted 130 entries with 39 making it through to the next level, from here three only reached the finalist stage. They are: Christchurch Airport, Mt Hutt Ski Area and Sicon Ltd.

“We entered with our staff Health and Safety Coalition Grou p wh o h av e b ee n instrumental in changing the health and safety culture of Sicon, and who we can’t thank enough,” commented a Sicon spokesperson. “We battle it out with the Mt Hutt Ski Area and the Christchurch Airport before the winner’s announcement at the September 19th awards evening. This event will be attended by the People and Safety team and staff from the Coalition group, along with Management,” they concluded.

Cars and their drivers enjoy the Selwyn sunshine during the inaugural Cancer Society Daffodil rally held in 2017. It’s hoped there will be an even greater turnout for this year’s event held this weekend - Sunday, August 26th - fundraising for this worthwhile charity. Selwyn roads will be busier than usual this Sunday with hundreds of vintage and classic cars taking part in the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Rally. The event has been organised by the Canterbury Branch of the Vintage Car Club, but is open to all vehicle enthusiasts, regardless of what they drive and ride, or how old it is. Spokesman for the VCC, Colin Hey of West Melton, commented

A variety of routes will be available to entrants, and they include visits to several museums, private vehicle collections and places of interest; or for those who just like to drive, there are two touring routes around the

beautiful Selwyn district available also. The event starts at the Vintage Car Club grounds in McLean’s Island Road, where participants can register for the event. Vehicles then depart on the various runs, returning to the VCC grounds for lunch and a public display. All proceeds from the event go to the annual Daffodil appeal run by the Cancer Society. Last year on the inaugural rally, 400 vehicles took part, and the VCC is hopeful that this number can be surpassed this year. The event will happen wet or fine.

Wednesday, August 8th was BNZ’s Closed For Good day; however this year it was a little different than those undertaken previously. Staff headed into the community to talk to kindergarten children, high school students and seniors about financial literacy and being good with money. These three main groups were identified as people who are at key moments of change and learning, so that’s where BNZ felt they could make a big difference - using interactive tools. Penny the Penguin, was the tool of choice for kindergarten children, while My Moni was aimed at high school students. The Scam Savvy pack was based around a more senior audience. Locals from the Selwyn area, Cameron Reed, Nikki Hoogenboezem, Hoogenboezem Sian Jenkins and Michelle Ristuccia made their way to the West Melton Kindergarten and Nursery to talk to four year olds there. They worked with Penny and Joy

from the Centre to run the session, utilising not only a story book, but also the Penny the Penguin app. These took the children on an adventure to work through needs, and wants, so that Penny the Penguin could restore her broken boat and get back on her adventures. “The children loved working through it and it’s a great interactive app to help them,” reported Sian Jenkins from BNZ. “We read through the story book with younger children as well, and they also loved it, especially the colouring pages and stickers,” Sian added. The group received much positive feedback from teachers at the Preschool, who commented, “it was great to have the BNZ personnel come in and take the children through something different and the children loved it.” Cameron, Nikki, Sian and Michelle all received big hugs and high 5’s as they left, and announced it to be a very rewarding day for all involved.

Spring is coming, and that means the 143rd Annual Courtenay A & P Show is just around the corner! This year, Show President Jane Jenkins has chosen the theme of 'Community'. Mark the Show date on the calendar; at the Kirwee Showgrounds on November 24th. As always at the Show, there will be entertainment aplenty, from the Ellesmere Pipe Band, to children's entertainers Shad Rutherford and Lolytwist, as well as the children's petting farm and usual fairground rides. The Showgrounds will be brimming with machinery, animals, indoor exhibits and Trade Sites. New this year is the Pleasure Horse Section - a chance for horse and rider to show off their skill and for children a new class - the Pet Rock. How much personality can you put into a Rock? The terrier race is always great fun to watch - good to start training canine friends now. “With over $20,000 in prizes and 66 trophies to be won at the Show, there's something for everyone,” stressed Show secretary Sharon Kellock. In Kirwee they are available from Kirwee Challenge. Sharon came up with the following ‘Fun Facts’: “Did you ever wonder why the Courtenay Show is in Kirwee and not Courtenay? The Show was originally held in a farmer's paddock in Courtenay (near the intersection of Courtenay Road and the Old West Coast Road). The first President of the Association was Colonel Brett De Renzy - he named Kirwee after the town he lived in, in India. His name is on the monument in Kirwee, and he was responsible for the water races in our patch of Canterbury. Some years later, land on the edge of Kirwee was

It has been reported that Hororata Golf Club members are again being smiled upon, as the Club boasts its second hole-inone, in as many weeks. On Saturday, August 18th the luck shone on local golfer Daryl McCaughan, McCaughan who achieved his first ever hole-in-one. Having teed off with his group of four, from number 16, Daryl admits things were. “going badly”. He was lining up on the number 6 tee and made his pitching wedge the club of choice. The hole is named ‘Shorty’ as it is only 118m from tee to green. The shot was straight, and the group watched as the ball overshot the hole by around a metre. The ball then began to roll back down the green towards the hole, hitting the pin and in Daryl’s words, “it just disappeared”. The group of players made their way to the green where the hole -in-one was confirmed. Given the quiet natures of all four players, the celebrations didn’t resound throughout the Course, but were congratulatory and sincere. In the Clubhouse however it was a different matter! Daryl handed his card in without a word and the captain noticed the in the column before announcing it to the players present, all of whom were vocal in their congratulations. Daryl recalls that the feeling of

seeing the ball in the hole was, “very weird, bizarre and exciting”. He couldn’t quite believe it had happened and after it he laughed that he, “could have called it a day then and there”. (Apparently his round didn’t improve because of it!) Daryl admitted to wearing his favourite red shirt, which he often gets ribbed about, after naming it his lucky shirt. He maintains it must have played a part and joked that he will now be seeking sponsorship from the brand! “Good on you Daryl and congratulations from the Club,” said a Hororata Golf spokesperson.

Kirwee Rugby Football Club’s Senior Prize Giving was held on Friday, August 17th at Larcomb Vineyard in Weedons. The event was well attended by players, life members, sponsors and supporters. After an enjoyable me al, t he crowd w ere entertained with speeches, before Ben Lill ran an entertaining, humourous, short quiz. Toby Messerer, Messerer Senior Club Captain was MC for the night, and provided those present with an insight into the mysteries of a day in the life of a Div 2 and 3 player! The evening continued with much dancing thanks to the music of DJ Singh Star.

Kirwee Senior Captain Vanessa Moore commented on how proud she was of her team taking out the Premier Shield four years in a row. This year saw the introduction of Malvern Flagship teams working together alongside Darfield High School to increase the opportunities for selected players. They attended an academy programme, accessed a variety of specialist trainings to increase their skill and development, and participated in a number of competitions and tournaments. There was exceptional netball played at all levels, with some stand out players. One such player was Emma Wason who this year won the exclusive Betty Black tray for most valuable player in an under 15 representative development team and most valuable player in the Malvern C flagship team. She is a strong defensive player and Malvern Netball look forward to seeing her netball grow again next season. Centre President Ariana Batstone commented, “I am extremely pleased with how the day came together and the enjoyment had by those on and off the court. It was great that each grade was won by a different Club within the Centre. We’re looking forward to the forthcoming ‘Have a Go Day’, next Sunday giving everyone an opportunity to see what it’s all about, and the new season ahead. “Thanks to all the volunteer coaches, managers, bench officials, first aiders, committee members supporters and parents who make this fantastic game possible”, she concluded.
