Cantabrians know only too well how disaster can affect people’s lives. Chevvy Roberts, a local Darfield lad, is helping the residents of Lombok after the devastating 6.9 earthquake on August 5th, which killed more than four hundred people. About 68,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed and about 270,000 people are homeless with some still unaccounted for. Chevvy has become close to a family in Lombok that he thinks of as his brothers. He met this family through the snorkel company that his employers use for tours. It is a family company and on occasion when he goes to Lombok they feed him, give him a bed, and take him on day tours around the Island. This family has given him so much in terms of hospitality and made his overseas journeys 100% authentic. This family doesn’t have a lot and it consists of sixty two people including babies and grandparents. The family has no insurance to back them up and have received no help from their government. So far $2,800 (NZD) has reached them. However even this is

Chevvy suggested buying them tents to sleep in, but instead they wanted new tarps to make tents, so that there would be enough money left for water and food to feed the family. This saving saw them with enough food and water for a week and a half for the family. They now need to be able to take down their houses and rebuild them. “This family can not describe

how thankful they are for this help,” Chevvy said. Chevvy has made a promise that he will not stop trying to help until the whole family has houses and jobs again. The amount Chevvy has received so far, has meant he has been able to not only help this family, but also others in the area as well. The company Chevvy works for, TruTravels is really behind helping the Lombok people also. TruTravels takes thousands of passengers through the area every year and the locals are such an important part of making their client’s experiences’ memorable. The Company has many friends over there affected by this disaster and they want to help
them as much as they can and assist with the rebuilding of their lives. They have bought food, water, clothing, blankets and medical supplies to distribute to the affected areas and have volunteers on the ground willing to help in any area they can. “Every little bit goes such a long way toward helping,” Chevvy explained. “Trutravels are planning to match every dollar raised making it possible to assist numerous villages and to work on a bigger scale,” he finished. Saturday, August 4th saw the grand opening of a new shop in Darfield’s Horndon Mews. Lovely Bubbly Scrumptious Soapery opened its doors with owners Amanda and Jason Wyatt extremely excited to have moved their business from their home to the commercial area of Darfield. The relocation had long been a dream of the pair, but they worried their niche market may not be an ideal fit for a shop in Darfield, coupled with the fact that retail space was seldom available in the township. The logistics of commuting to Christchurch and the juggling that would be required with a young family was also given consideration - albeit briefly. “Wouldn’t it be great if we could find a place in Darfield,” Amanda often commented. No sooner said than done - the shop that has now become theirs, was advertised. It was exactly what they wanted and the couple saw this as a sign to ‘make the leap’. “Opening day was amazing,” both Amanda and Jason enthused. “We have had such positive feedback and the response from the local community has been really humbling. We have had a lot of people through the shop and a
lot of those people have been following Lovely Bubbly’s journey for a few years now. “Some of our best sellers have been soapy waffles and mocha cups. Folk also seem to love the ‘fill your own jar’ of dragon poop bath bombs and bamboo toothbrushes have been a hit also.” The surprise for Amanda and Jason was the popularity of simple, unscented, bentonite clay bars. In addition to their soap they also have a selection of bath bombs from Tauranga, bamboo toothbrushes from Nelson, loose leaf herbal tea hailing from Hamilton, along with bath racks and soap dishes, plus wax food wraps from Christchurch. Everything else the Lovely Bubbly store stocks is made by other small volume, kiwi enterprises, all doing amazing work. Inspiration for many of Lovely Bubbly’s unique designs often comes from receiving a new fragrance and then envisaging what type of product would suit it. “Ideas can come from anywhere and everywhere, so there's no chance of running out of inspiration,” Amanda laughed. She admitted to loving coming up with new ideas and testing her skills with elaborate
designs. “The best part is dreaming up the new ideas before the satisfaction of seeing them come to life,” Amanda said. “Some of Lovely Bubbly Scrumptious Soapery’s creations can be quite labour intensive with piping and decorating, but the end result is worth it,” Amanda and Jason explained. All soap has to cure on the shelves in the soap studio for at least one month before it can be put out in the shop. Amanda and Jason are understandably full of enthusiasm about their new shop. Their products cater for a wide range of people and especially those people who like to know where the products they buy come from, along with those who want something a bit unique and rather special.

It’s time for Selwyn residents to ‘have a go’ at a huge variety of sport and recreation activities at this year’s Have a Go Day. The free Selwyn District Council and Selwyn Sports Trust annual event is now in its fourth year, and will return on Sunday, August 26th at the Darfield Recreation Centre and Domain. Selwyn District Council Senior Events and Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett commented that the day had been one of the most popular events on the district’s recreation calendar. “Over 1200 people enjoyed trying out new sports and activities at the Have a Go Day in 2017,” he said. “We’re excited to bring the event to Darfield this year to showcase the sport and recreation activities Darfield, neighbouring communities and the wider Selwyn district has to offer.” Around twenty indoor and outdoor sports, activities, games and challenges are planned, including dodgeball, archery, quake floorball, golf, squash, skating, highland games, smallbore rifle, bowling,

Jo McIntosh and her team from Bayleys Real Estate Darfield have been out and about during the week of July 30th - August 3rd visiting local Primary Schools, Preschools and Kindergartens to donate to each of their libraries a copy of ACE: A Horsey Tail of Courage starring The Crusaders Horses (which Bayleys sponsor). This book is about a cute little horse named Ace that has bucket-loads of talent and big dreams. He also has a big problem. Well, three problems, actually, the three horses at the Clip-Clop School who bully Ace every day. But help is at hand, or hoof, in the shape of Holly from the Crusaders Bayleys Horses. She's Ace's hero and she knows exactly what to do to make the bullying stop. And so, just as with every great story with a powerful message, Ace: A Horsey Tail of Courage has a happy ending. Proceeds from the sales of these books are also helping communities, because all proceeds from sales go to Make -A-Wish NZ (which grants the wishes of children who are battling critical illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy). Someone like Ace who is close to the Crusaders horses is local rider Shane Maley. He is the Black Knight horseman for the Crusaders and has been since the year 2000. Shane was approached by Canterbury Rugby when Black Knight liquorice came on board as a sponsor. A tall rider and a horse that was taller than the polo ponies used by the Crusader horsemen was looked for and Shane and his horse at the time fitted the bill. “There’s not a lot of training you can do to prepare your horse for a packed stadium full of excited fans, as there’s not many places that has a crowd of 20,000 people waving flags as you ride pass,” Shane commented. “You really don’t know what's going to happen until you go out on to the field,” he added. “Sometimes things don’t always go to plan,” Shane recounted. “Following the 2008 final, which the Crusaders won, one of my horses got loose from the truck and set off to perform his own victory lap! I suspect he was just showing off his new cover,”
Shane laughed. “I got messages from all around the world that night so he must have put on a good show,” he smiled. “The atmosphere is fantastic on game night, the riders enjoy it probably as much as the players do, when they run out. It’s amazing to not only see the reactions of the children but the adults too. At the end of the day that is what it is all about,” Shane said. Shane’s current Black Knight mount, Dusty is the third horse he has used in the role. His first horse was Cortez, a 17hh Thoroughbred which Shane had competed until he retired him. The Crusaders

contact came just at the right time and was the ideal retirement job and one Cortez performed for eleven years. The next five years was the turn of a 17.1hh warmblood and now he rides Dusty. Shane and Dusty have been together for the last two seasons, but before that Dusty was used as a hunting horse in North Canterbury. Dusty makes a great Black Knight’s horse as he is very quiet - a big plus in ensuring things don’t go wrong in front of a 20,000 spectator crowd!

One hundred and eighty seven visitors enjoyed Terrace Station’s first spring open day on Sunday, August 12th, with many families taking advantage of the beautiful day to picnic on the lawns. The quiz table of historic domestic items was a popular drawcard, and the self guided activities for the children proved a great success. Masses of snowdrops and hellebores were the stars of the garden, with signs of many more spring flowers on the way, such as primroses, violets, crocuses and daffodils. Many visitors walked amongst the magnificent 150

I’m sure most of you have experienced what it is like to have a sore tooth; it’s not much fun and we quickly want to get it sorted. It’s a bit hard to ask your pet if something is painful and it has to be very painful before it becomes obvious that your dog or cat is having trouble eating. I will fairly commonly get the comment from an owner, “he is still eating and seems ok”, but when you look in the animal’s mouth there are several rotten teeth which have to be very uncomfortable. Owners may notice bad breath, dribbling or salivation, changes in behaviour, or reduced appetite, but in a lot of cases it is only by getting a good look into the back of the mouth that we can tell if there is a problem. Soft food diets (dog roll, tinned food, mince etc) and your pet’s genetics have the most effect on whether your dog and cat will get dental disease. Smaller breeds of dog often have more dental issues because of the shape of their mouth and slight overcrowding of their teeth. Teeth don’t go from being
healthy to irreversibly damaged in a few months. It takes years. Usually it starts with low grade gingivitis, plaque then tarter builds up which slowly damages the attachments that the tooth has with the gum and jaw. Other times it occurs when a dog chews on something hard and breaks a tooth and this often leads to the tooth dying and developing a tooth root abscess. Owners will often ask, “how will my pet eat if you take a few teeth out?” I usually reply that your pet will feel so much more comfortable without those teeth, most biscuits are small enough to swallow without needing to be chewed and you’ll be taking away the discomfort these teeth have been causing. Your pet may only require one or two dental procedures in their life, but what a difference these can make to being a happier and healthier animal.

The Cancer Society of New Zealand, Canterbury-West Coast Division celebrated the official opening of its new Centre in Selwyn, on Thursday, August 9th. The new Centre in Rolleston is a hub for all of Selwyn, offering a range of support, information and advice to those living with and affected by cancer throughout the area. Elizabeth Chesterman, Chesterman Chief Executive commented, “the Selwyn Centre has been up and running for just over two months now and is already supporting many people in the area living with cancer. Our volunteer led Cancer Support groups are well established throughout Selwyn and the
Centre will be an additional resource for them and, most importantly, for many others trying to cope with the disease.” Jackie Claridge, Centre Coordinator has been heartened by the response the new Centre has received. “People are thrilled that the Cancer Society now has a base in Selwyn,” Jackie added. “Schools have been really keen to work with us and show their support, as have other community organisations. The Selwyn Centre is here for the Selwyn community and we want people to know that they have a place to connect with to get the support they need. “Volunteers are the life-force of

our organisation and one of the valuable ways they contribute is through the volunteer driving service which supports people accessi ng treat ment in Christchurch.” Jackie continued by saying, “what we need in Selwyn is more driver volunteers to help meet the transport needs of the people in the district.” The Cancer Society’s major fundraiser Daffodil Day is coming soon (August 31st) and this is a way people and groups can support the Society by raising much needed funds. Funds which assist cancer support services on offer throughout Canterbury and the West Coast. “Look out for our volunteers and collection boxes throughout the Selwyn area, and please give generously, because with your help there is hope,” Jackie concluded.

They were run by experts in these fields with break-out sessions in wellbeing for parents and adults that attended the day. The first outdoor activity session was a rotation of children and parents in their house groups around a set of various activities; gumboot throw, arts, quizzes and giant board games. The second outdoor activity was the lunch session with the Kapahaka group performing and the addition of a barbecue. During this lunch session there were games while competition entries were judged. Competitions such as dad and children's baking, mum and children's sculpture, plus a creative family photo-shoot. The final outdoor activity session consisted of an obstacle course and the much awaited prize giving. It was pronounced to be a fabulous, fun, day for all those that attended.

Having recently relinquished a long standing farm lease Darfield’s Nigel Nige and Clare Clatworthy were looking for a new business opportunity. With the advent of stage 2 Central Plains Water (CPW) irrigation coming online for spring 2018, the couple felt it would lead to more grass and cereal feed crops being grown. “This will undoubtedly put pressure on the timeliness of cutting,” Nigel commented. After much thought Nigel and Clare settled on the idea of an Agri-mowing business. With equipment capable of assisting large contractors when peak harvesting workloads come on, as well as providing a service to smaller contractors and farmers who may not be able to justify a high output mowing machine for their lighter workloads their business was born.

MALVERN NEWS DEADLINES: Greendale School was extremely grateful to have the intervention of Frew’s Contracting to assist with sorting out their boggy car parking problems. With an increase in traffic at the School they definitely needed some more space. They had even had several instances of cars getting stuck in the mud outside School. After approaching the Council and the Ministry of Education, but sadly not having any luck, Frew’s Contracting contacted them and the rest is history! Frew’s offered to do the job and after a quick meeting they turned up the next day. Thursday, August 2nd Darfield Preschool and Nursery held their ‘Annual Hangi Night’. This year saw around sixty four parents, children (of both new and existing families), plus Preschool and Nursery staff sharing the yummy kai from the hangi. This was the culmination of all their recent Matariki celebrations. The children played a big part in the preparation of the hangi by peeling and chopping the vegetables ready to go down in the pit. For the past three years Darfield Preschool and Nursery have been very fortunate to have used Hirini Mackie’s (one of the Centre’s dads) cultural knowledge to prepare and cook their hangi. They would like to thank families and staff for the donations of meat and vegetables, they couldn’t do this without such support. The gold coin donations ($138) for the evening will be spent on some new resources for the carpentry area. “Everyone is already eagerly looking forward to next year’s feast!,” Louise the Centre’s administrator laughed.

The Friends of Darfield Hospital is a registered Charitable Trust, which was formed some thirty four years ago. Its major goal is that of supporting the Hospital, by providing extra valuable items which are not among those provided by the Hospital Board. In particular, The Friends support the Hospital by raising funds locally, to help provide those extras which enhance the comfort, care and treatment of the patients. These provisions have many corresponding benefits for the staff also, as they carry out their daily duties. During the past year, The Friends have provided several items, including a Sara Stedy patient mobility device in cooperation with the Malvern Cancer Support Group; a new commercial grade washing machine for the laundry; items for the birthing suite - including a new heat pump, duvet covers, black and white baby books, and a Lazy Boy chair for the lounge among others. An example of one very valuable
fundraiser, is the annual Indoor Bowls Tournament held in partnership with the Darfield Indoor Bowls Club. This year the tournament is being held on Wednesday, September 12th at the Darfield Recreation Centre. “This event receives outstanding support from the community which is greatly appreciated,” a spokesperson for The Friends of Darfield Hospital said. The Annual Meeting of The Friends is to be held on

At the twelfth New Zealand Century Farm and Station Awards (NZCFSA) dinner on Saturday, May 26th Minister Shane Jones honoured eligible families with the presentation of a bronze plaque and certificate to display on their properties. To qualify for an Award, a farm or station must have been operated continuously by the same family for one hundred years or more. The line of ownership from the original settler, or buyer, may be through children, siblings, or nephews and nieces, including through marriage or adoption. The New Zealand Century Farm and Station Awards programme aims to capture and preserve this important rural history, which might otherwise be lost through the generations. Last week The News profiled the Wright and Redfern families who were recipients at this event and this week it is the turn of the Robertson Family - also a recipient this year (see next page).

Another local family - the Hayes family from Halkett received their award in 2007 - reflecting the long history of the family and their property Newhall in this area. Benjamin and Annie Hayes left Tipperary County, Ireland in 1875 from London, aboard the Soukar bound for a new life in New Zealand. They disembarked at Timaru in February 1876. After living in Timaru and Springston they bought Newhall, a 1,000 acre farm in Halkett running sheep, beef and mixed cropping. Benjamin and Annie had seven children, three boys and four girls. Of the boys George and Benjamin took over the farm. Benjamin was a bachelor and George and Abena had one child, George Braddon. Braddon Braddon and Freda bought the rest of the family out and ran Newhall in their own right. They had three children, Ross, Ross June and Donald. Donald Ross and Jane, Jane Donald and Jenny farmed Newhall in partnership from 1989 to 2004 when another property at Mead was purchased. The partnership was split with Donald and Jenny owning Terracefields at Mead and Ross and Jane owning Newhall.

Scottish born James Robertson and James Dysart from Ireland came out from Britain independently and bought land in Courtenay. By 1859 James Robertson held 21 acres at Courtenay, where he built a sod accommodation house for miners travelling to the West Coast. He married Margaret Osborne in 1855 and they had seven children, with four dying of tuberculosis between 18 and 27 years old. James R. added a further 21 acres, granted to him by Queen Victoria in 1865 and another 21 acres in 1867. He grew wheat and oats and grazed sheep, horses and cows. James R. started a cartage business, carting wool for Lake Coleridge and Torlesse Stations and in 1865 built a new two storey house, Langcroft. James Dysart arrived in Lyttelton in 1864 and later went to Courtenay and worked for James Robertson’s cartage business. James was anxious to
save 100 pounds to return home, but when he nearly had that amount, decided to try gold mining on the West Coast. He stayed there some time without success and returned with 3d in his pocket. Undaunted, James D. started contract ploughing and making sod fences around Kimberley, Kirwee, and Courtenay and in 1868, was granted twenty acres in Courtenay by Queen Victoria gradually adding to this as the opportunity arose. In 1869 he married Mary McCartney and they had a daughter, Annie and three sons. In 1902 the two families merged when James Robertson’s son, Andrew married Annie Dysart. Dysart They had three children, Molly, Molly James Selwyn and Courtenay, Courtenay who died aged four of whooping cough. They leased 145 acres from Annie’s brothers, which her father had bought in 1880. In 1927, this land was sold to

Annie. Andrew was a good farmer, averaging fifty bushels to the acre for oats and 30-40 bushels of wheat. He ran sheep, horses and cows. By age 45 he was crippled with back pain so his son, Selwyn ran the farms for him. He acquired all but twenty acres of James’ original land and bought a further eighty acres from his cousin during the 1930s. Selwyn married Vida Roper in 1940 and they had four children, Elaine, Elaine James Murray, Murray Keith and Desmond. Desmond Selwyn farmed successfully until 1967 when his son, James Murray and wife, Maureen (present owners) bought the farms. They have three children, Rosalie, Rosalie James and Craig. Craig In 1979 and 1994, they bought two adjacent 300 acre blocks at Sheffield and in 2005, a 300 acre block adjacent to the Dysart block. The farm now carries 1,000 ewes, 150 cattle and grows a variety of seeds. In 2006, the farms were leased to their son, Craig and his wife, Sally. Sally Their grandchildren, Tylor, Tylor Robert, Robert Harry, Harry Jack and Emma are all interested in farming, so the future looks good.

Darfield High School’s Equestrian teams competed in the annual Canterbury Secondary Schools’ One Day Horse trial competition on Sunday, August 12th, at McLean’s Island Equestrian Centre. Twenty one teams were entered in the three phase competition, with riders and their mounts competing in dressage, and two jumping phases; cross country and show jumping. Although the weather was fine on Sunday there was
an extremely cold wind, felt by all. “Team spirit was high with lots of encouragement for riders from their fellow team mates and support crews,” a Darfield spokesperson said. Darfield High School entered two teams; Blue and Maroon. The DHS Blue Team consisted of Niamh Rayne, Rayne Charlotte Thomas, Thomas Sophie Jarvis and Katherine Hadler. Hadler This team performed very well, finishing second overall by under a point.
The DHS Maroon Team consisted of Jodie Rollings, Rollings Mikayla Jarvis, Jarvis Caitlin Rayne and Georgia Allison. Allison This team finished eleventh overall. Both DHS teams gave it their best, all performed well and all finished on live scores. Christchurch Girls High School were the winners of the Jane Sullivan Trophy this year (awarded to the overall winners) by .7 of a point from DHS Blue Team, making for a very close competition.
