Darfield High School joined with various Canterbury Schools at Horncastle Arena on Tuesday July 31st for the new Showquest competition. Showquest is a performing arts platform for schools, consisting of a nationwide series of events to showcase music, drama and dance. Students must create, produce and perform an original theatrical production consisting of student-designed and constructed costumes and p r o p s, p r e s e n t ed i n a choreographed, themed minispectacular. These will also feature audio tracks, optional video tracks, themes, choreography, dance, and lighting. Darfield High School were competing for the overall winners award, plus a variety of category awards. They performed outstandingly emerging with the overall winner’s award, plus category awards for performance, choreography, theme, drama and design. The theme chosen by Darfield was that of Stoneman Douglas High School. This is the American school where the shooting that killed seventeen students and staff, and injured seventeen others, took place. DHS students Aeryn McMillan and Jemma Dalley who were
Jemma Dalley and Aeryn McMillan with all the awards DHS won. instrumental in suggesting and coordinating this theme spoke about their choice with passion. “We wanted to show that we supported and felt for the people affected by this shooting,” they said. The pair felt strongly about this theme as the students involved were similar in age to they th e m se lv e s. T h ey a l so commented that events such as the Stone man Doug la s Shooting affect people all over the world, not just those directly caught up in the episode. The DHS Showquest group contained sixty nine dancers
and a support crew of fifteen, from years 7 - 13. The group put in many hours of rehearsal along with a considerable amount of time and planning before their performance was stage-ready. Costumes that were effective, simple and able to be merged between characters brought more than a few headaches to the DHS Showquest team. They managed to present a simplicity of design that enabled the audience to clearly see the definition between characters, while not encumbering those on stage with difficult and unwieldy changes.
Even after their performance the group were unsure how they had placed in the categories. This was the inaugural Showquest and Aeryn and Jemma were aware that they were going into the unknown. However DHS pulled out all the stops and gave an amazing performance. “We were rapt with how it all went,” the pair said. “Everyone gave it their very best. The dancers were amazing and made the performance look professional and effortless.” Check out the Showquest Facebook page to view Darfield’s winning performance.

The biennial Selwyn Awards were held on Saturday August 5th at the Lincoln Event Centre. More than three hundred and thirty people celebrated the success of the region at this event, which also featured a range of entertainment, food and beverages originating from Selwyn. Nearly 2,400 votes were cast for the People’s Choice Award, which was introduced for the first time this year. “It’s great to see the community supporting local people working for the good of Selwyn,” Mayor Sam Broughton said. “We have so many amazing people in Selwyn giving up their time to help others, building thriving businesses which support our district’s economy, and working to improve our environment and community wellbeing,” Sam said. “I am very proud of all the winners, as well as the runners up and nominees, it just shows what a wealth of talent and creativity we have in Selwyn.” The Environmental Award was awarded to Lesley Barlow and Stephen Clarke. Clarke The recently retired visual arts teachers, have taken their passion for the environment and education from the classroom to the community. In 2010 they took over a patch of Council land proposing to return it to its pre-
European state. Since taking over the land they have built a nursery, as well as gifting all excess trees to a range of other projects. Springfield’s Bill Woods nominated the pair for this award and he was there to accept it on their behalf. He also made a second nomination for Coalgate resident Philip Shaw but unfortunately it didn’t progress through to the final stages. Environmental Award: 1: Lesley Barlow & Stephen Clarke 2: Plastic Straws Suck 3: Matt Stanford & Lou Drage. The People’s Choice Award was awarded to Youth Worker Courtney Forrest. Forrest From 2012 to 2017, he developed the youth programme in Rolleston, to a level which required additional professional youth workers and community volunteers. Winter hasn’t really happened, but spring is round the corner. This Sunday, August 12th, is the first of Terrace Station’s Open Garden days for this spring, and visitors will have the opportunity to view this heritage garden and the fifteen hectare woodland, which is carpeted with snowdrops. Banks of hellebores will however remind viewers that winter is not quite over. On Sunday, September 9th the advancing spring produces violets and primroses, while for the October 7th opening daffodi ls and bl ueb e ll s prevail. On November 4th see aquilegias, trilliums and other early summer flowers; a reminder that summer is not far away. The woodland walkway highlights magnificent 150 year old trees, such as sequoias and oaks and a renovated summer house showcases some historic gardening and farm items. The very popular quiz table displays fascinating nineteenth century domestic items for viewers to mull over. This year children will be given printed suggestions for self-guided activities to keep them amused, while the adults enjoy the garden. Visitors are welcome between 11am and 3pm, and are
encouraged to bring a picnic weather permitting - to enjoy on the lawns of the historic home. Woodland plants will be for sale. The $5 entry fee goes to the Terrace Station Charitable Trust, ( en try f or c h i ld r en i s
free). There will be signposts from the Hororata roundabout but organisers ask that dogs be left at home.

The great Oxford Garage Sale Trail - a wonderful fundraiser, bargain-hunt and a good way to de-clutter - another successful event took place last Sunday. The Oxford Promotions Action Committee, organisers of the Great Oxford Garage Sale Trail were extremely grateful that the sun shone last Sunday, August 5th, which brought hundreds of
bargain hunters out to Oxford township. All the 48 sites in and around Oxford participating were well patronised, with one garage sale vendor commenting that they had over 400 people visit them. “We ran out of maps just after 11am,” said one of the organisers, “so we were thankful for those with smart phones, who took just took photos of the list of participants from the display map - before heading off to find treasures. “Everyone commented that it was a great event for the bargain hunter and an equally great event for residents to declutter and sell off seldom used items.”

It was golf as usual for Ivan Palmer on Saturday afternoon July 28th, when he teed off at the Hororata Golf Club. Ivan set off with his golfing team, from the number 13 tee in front of the Course’s Willows Café. Five holes later he was lining up the number 17 green from the tee-off area above the fairway. He was the last player in the team to tee off on the 182 metre fairway. His club of choice was a 3 wood and the drive looked to be straight, the ball pitching about six feet short of the green and carrying on towards the hole. Ivan heard the ball hit the flag pin, but no one saw its exact landing spot. As the group progressed towards the green and the ball was not visible, the excitement began to build. Upon reaching the hole Ivan discovered that their suspicions were confirmed - the ball was indeed well and truly in the hole! At 76 Ivan has been playing golf for 56 years, but this was his first hole-in-one. He claimed that it was a great feeling and his celebration at the time was
understated, in keeping with his humble attitude towards the event. Despite never having achieved a hole-in-one before, Ivan had been on the Course one evening when two people shot holes-in-one on the same hole, number 17; this is a definite rarity. Word of Ivan’s achievement spread quickly throughout the
players on the Course and he was well congratulated on his arrival at the Clubhouse following the round. Obviously something to go down in the Club’s history books. “Congratulations Ivan - you are very deserving of this distinguished achievement,” commented a Club spokesperson.

When the Masters World Cup Hockey tournament wrapped up on August 5th, local players commented that they’d had a fantastic time and met some amazing people. The event held in Barcelona saw Pip Wilson of West Melton playing in the Over 60’s team emerge with a silver medal for second place; Amy Truscott and Lisa Watson of Kirwee in the over 35’s team coming in at 4th and Jane Jenkins of Darfield in the over 55’s, finishing eighth. 2018 sees Porters celebrate their fiftieth birthday. To commemorate the occasion they will be holding a special birthday party at their annual Oktoberfest celebrations on September 22nd. There have also been a limited number of tees released featuring the first logo (previously called Porters Heights), the icon from the first letterhead and a grid of names going back over the last fifty years. Porters began in the October of 1966 when Paul Willis visited
the un-named basin which is now known as Porters Ski Area. Shortly afterwards, Paul and Anton Coberger skied the entire basin and were so impressed that preliminary negotiations with the runholders of Brooksdale and Castle Hill sheep stations and the Crown Lands Dept began, with the view of establishing Canterbury’s first commercial ski field. The following year observations of weather and snow conditions were made throughout the winter. This winter though

turned out to be a light snow year. By December 1967, the company was registered and thirty thousand shares at one dollar each were offered. These were taken up by twenty four individuals. The funds were used to get the area ready for its first season in 1968. The first stage of the development was the construction of an eighteen foot wide access road to the snowline, which back then was a lot lower than it is today. Following this was the construction of a day lodge, two beginners’ rope tows, both 300 feet long, and a main 2,500 feet long rope tow with a vertical rise of 700 feet. Four carparks were terraced into the valley floor and hillside, allowing parking for 400 cars. The top three carparks were five minutes walk from the lodge and tow. The fourth carpark was about twenty minutes walk away. The Ski Lodge provided a cafeteria, equipment hire and staff accommodation for three. This was how Porter Heights started - very different to the current Porters today, but testament to those that had the vision of bringing a ski field to fruition.

On Friday, August 3rd, three Scout groups from the Torlesse zone participated in the zone small bore shooting competition. The competition was held in the Darfield Smallbore Rifle Club’s range, for the first time since the quakes. This competition began in 1953, under the Selwyn District zone name and ran until 1968. In 1984 the competition restarted and in 1997 was renamed the Deans District Shooting Competition, with another name change in 2008, to the current Torlesse Zone Shooting Competition. This year the competition was won for the first time by a team of five shooters from Darfield Scouts. Last week members of the new South Island High Country Advisory Group were announced by the Chief Executive of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) Andrew Crisp. Crisp Andrew said he was delighted with the number of applications and was pleased at the value so many people saw in working together with government through the Group. “In just four weeks we had 33 applications, demonstrating how passionately people feel about this iconic area,” he added. “So many high calibre candidates applied that we have increased the number of members in the Group. We had originally planned to appoint up to six members of the public, but with so many highly skilled applicants, from such diverse backgrounds, we have increased the number to ten.” The Advisory Group will see LINZ adopt a new way of working in the High Country. “It’s really important to us that we’re hearing directly from a range of people who can provide us with expert advice and a local perspective. We have members with experience in sectors such as the environment, farming, industry, iwi and government. “As stewards of this land, we have a responsibility to ensure the unique and special place that is the High Country can be enjoyed for generations to

come.” Alongside the nominated members will be representatives from LINZ, the Department of Conservation and Ngāi Tahu. The Group will provide advice and insights to the Commissioner of Crown Lands and LINZ to enable greater transparency and communication in the management of Crown land in the South Island High Country. The Group is expected to meet four times a year and members are appointed for two years.

The Selwyn Rugby Club has had another enjoyable and rewarding season for 2018. This year we fielded six junior teams from under 11’s to under 6’s with a team in each of these grades. Along with this we have contributed to the Darfield under 13’s which is helping to rebuild those age grades in the district. At the Club this year we have installed a new heat pump, which is working a treat, and follows on from the new flooring in previous seasons. All teams have competed well during the season and we would like to thank all the parents and supporters that make this happen. Also this season we have had some great backing from sponsors which has allowed us to purchase hoodies for all the children. This support has also allowed the Club, over the last two seasons, to renew all rugby jerseys. The Club would also like to acknowledge all the hard work that goes in behind the scenes from the committee and we look forward to another successful season in 2019.

SELWYN UNDER 11 Selwyn has a very strong junior Club at the moment and the U11 team has had a competitive season to date. This is the first year of fifteen a side and full field for the players, this year. Despite having the bare minimum of players (which made selection easy) the team has had a great season where they have pulled together well and won ten of their sixteen games, while only losing by narrow margins in other very gutsy matches. The kids have all benefitted from playing full games week in week out. Our local derby matches have been a highlight with some very tight and hard fought battles and some outstanding rugby from all sides. Several games have been
won despite having to borrow opposition players; a couple of matches were even won with fourteen players. The team has a good team spirit, with all players getting on well together. Our defence has been notable this season along with support play and much improved ball security, plus hunger to win opposition ball as the season has progressed. The progress of all players has been
noticeable. Everyone has improved over the season up to the point where we have had five players selected for the Ellesmere U11 development squads. The team has enjoyed fantastic support from parents and helpers which contributes to the success the children have enjoyed this season. Coaches: Rodney Booth and Tim Loos, Loos Manager Jodi Loos.

The Otago township of Lawrence hosted over 230 people at the twelfth New Zealand Century Farm and Station Awards (NZCFSA) dinner on Saturday, May 26th. It was a big night of celebration for many families with numerous stories shared. Minister Shane Jones honoured the families with a presentation of a bronze plaque and certificate to display on their properties. Also joining in the celebrations were local List MP and Committee member, Mark Patterson and Labour List MP for Wairarapa, Kieran McAnulty. McAnulty The Century Farm and Station Awards began in 2005, after an impassioned group from Lawrence decided to ensure New Zealand's farming history was not lost. It set up the inaugural New Zealand Century Farms Awards, and well over four hundred families have now joined this exclusive
circle of centenarians and sesquicentenarians. To qualify for an Award, a farm or station must have been operated continuously by the same family for one hundred years or more. The line of ownership from the original settler, or buyer, may be through children, siblings, or nephews and nieces, including through marriage or adoption. While there is a small amount of work involved (researching family histories, land titles etc) the process is thoroughly rewarding, and an opportunity to reconnect with previous generations. Beyond the awards ceremony, the participants historical records are then able to be sent to Archive at the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington, ensuring all records are kept in perpetuity. At the heart of New Zealand’s heritage are the stories of the early pioneers who cultivated
and transformed the country’s untamed wild land into the rich agricultural industry that exists today. Many of their descendants continue to produce crops and livestock on the land with the same passion, hard work and perseverance shown in those early days. The New Zealand Century Farm and Station Awards programme aims to capture and preserve this important rural history, which might otherwise be lost through the generations. Along with the three local families (Wright Wright, Wright Robertson and Redfern) Redfern who received awards this year, previous recipients from this area have included: Jarman, Jarman Shipley, Shipley Duncan families at the 2017 awards ceremony. Elmhurst farm near Darfield was originally part of the Bangor estate on the wind swept Canterbury plains. John Olave Redfern and his wife, Evelyn farmed 700 acres of Elmhurst (initially known as Ferndale) in Darfield in 1898. John fattened sheep as well as growing oats, wheat, turnips and rape. He founded a Southdown sheep stud (Flock No. 793) in -1928, which continued on with his son Courtney. Courtney John died in 1937 and his only son, Charles Olave (known as Courtney) purchased the property and since then
further adjoining areas have been added. Courtney lived at Elmhurst his entire life, marrying Kathleen Edbrooke and having five sons John, John Michael, Michael Tom, Tom Brian and Peter. Peter Courtney continued along similar farming practices to his father with sheep and cropping and he was also a Malvern County Council member for 21 years and chairman from 19651975. Courtney farmed Elmhurst in conjunction with Roecombe, a hill country farm near Sheffield. All sons farmed nearby and Peter started farming part of Elmhurst with Courtney in 1976 and has since
purchased the remainder of Elmhurst from his brothers. Peter and his wife, Gretchen still actively farm Elmhurst and live in the original homestead. They started off farming sheep, beef and traditional arable crops, although with the advent of irrigation in 1998, the farming practices changed resulting in an intensive arable farm. The fourth generation are all involved in farming too. Guy farms with his wife, Fiona at Muzzle Station in the Clarence Valley. Felicity and her husband, Gareth and Hamish and his wife, Janet own or lease farms adjoining or part-of Elmhurst.

In 1892, George F. Wright leased 600 acres of land at Annat, near Sheffield. Formerly part of the Easedale Nook run it overlooked the Waimakariri River and was suitable for livestock and crops. In 1897, at the end of his five year lease, he purchased the property and called it Mountain View. He married Margaret Lill in 1893 and had two sons, Leicester and Quentin and two daughters, Ruby and Margaret. Margaret Leicester and Quentin each took over half of the original block in the 1920s. Quentin's half he called Hillview and his descendants Allan, Allan Stuart and Simon Wright live and farm there to this day. Quentin married Winifred Jarman in 1926 and they had three sons, Allan, Geoffrey and Nesslea, Nesslea plus a daughter Anne. Anne Tragically, in 1937 Quentin suddenly died from pneumonia and the farm was run as his estate by trustees until the early 1950s when Allan, Geoff and Ness came home from school. Geoff bought a farm in his own right at West Melton, and Allan and Ness farmed Hillview as Wright Brothers. Allan married June Netting in 1953 and had five children, Quentin, Quentin Janne, Janne Stuart, Stuart Adrienne and James. James Ness married May Jenkins and had two children, Hugh and

In 1982, Alan was knighted for his services to agriculture. Stuart married Angela Copland from Chertsey in 1983 and had three children, Hannah, Hannah Simon and Alice. Alice Quentin married Karen Scott and in 2008, Stuart purchased his share of the property. ln 2012, Simon returned home to the farm as an active partner in the family business. Today Hillview is a total of 32Oha growing arable crops, small seeds, seed potatoes and finishing lambs
with three generations living on the properly. In 2017, 125 years after George F Wright started farming Hillview, the farm joined the new Central Plains Irrigation scheme watering 221ha.

The tournament was organised by Terina Graham and it was great for all players to enjoy the sport in a fun atmosphere. The highlight for teams was being able to play against their parents.
