Darfield Primary School students and teachers were joined by family and community members on Monday, July 23rd to celebrate the opening of the refurbished Pikopiko Block. The ceremony began with a blessing of the building, led by the Te Taumutu Runanga, before Board of Trustees Chairman, Brad Sutton, Sutton welcomed everyone and thanked those that had helped throughout the project.

Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton officially opened the building with the School’s head boy Riley McNae and head girl Yssa Cullen leading the proceedings throughout.

The whole school is now comfortably able to fit within the middle space of the Refurbished block.

“The school is so excited that they have a flexible learning space to all gather together in, and one that students can easily find spaces to work as a whanau, or small group,” it was reported.

To the Editors: Around July 19th or 20th a very heavy, and very rare, large. vintage, wheeled, fire extinguisher, on display at the Darfield Fire Station, North Terrace, was stolen.

The item was removed by persons unknown and had been bolted to the ground on a concrete base. It would have had to have been transported from the Station on a Ute, or a trailer, and we are asking the public if anyone saw this, or knows where the extinguisher is?

Please contact the Darfield Police, or a Fire Brigade member if you have information regarding this missing Fire Extinguisher.

Described as a ‘Musical Comedy’ The Witches of Eastwick opens tonight, August 3rd and is performed by the Kirwee Players. Taking to the stage in the well-appointed Kirwee Community Hall the production is one of many presented to appreciative audiences since the Kirwee Players inception in 1977.

“This year we have lots of new faces and many old,” commented Kirwee Players president Linda Gosling.

Gosling “This witty, fast paced show will have you laughing and wanting to press rewind to watch again. I still don’t know how Glen (Glen Glen Clark - Darryl Von Horne) does his magic (trade secret)! The cast are all talented and the awesome harmonies, perfectly cast characters and, great community theatre managed by a fabulous directing team won’t fail to entertain and impress,” Linda enthused.

For Linda this is a year of many firsts and sees her backstage rather than onstage, something she confesses feels very different.

tale of the people of the little town of Eastwick. It is a town where everyone knows everything about everyone else and it is presided over by the indomitable Felicia Gabriel.

Bored and fed up with their small town lives, three women, Alexandra (Alex), Sukie, and Jane share a desire for ‘all manner of man in one man’ to provide excitement and variety.

That man arrives, literally in a flash, in the devil-like form of Darryl Van Horne. Darryl seduces the women and teaches them powers they never knew they had.

Scandalised by the carefree foursome, Felicia and the women of the town vow to clean up the ‘Dirty Laundry’ that is disrupting their peaceful setup.

To find out what eventuates, along with all the twists and turns that follow - be sure to secure tickets (see the advertisement in this issue) for a seat at this outstanding production.

The News attended one of the last dress rehearsals prior to opening night and thoroughly enjoyed the experience: “The atmosphere was electric (and not just because of the special effects, improved technology and focussed lighting, installed after a succession of successful Shows

enabled funding to increase infrastructure) because the talent displayed by those on stage made it so. Welcomed by the affable director Phil Dean (whose height overwhelmed me! ) I w as im pr es s ed throughout by his professional approach and his careful attention to detail.

The Show is hilarious - not in a cringeworthy way, but in a laugh -out-loud way - testament to the ability of those on stage to make it so. ‘Fidel’ - Greg Knowles has to be seen to be believed and his slightly risqué costumes are just a hoot.

Outstanding is the only way to describe the singing, the projection of voices and the harmonising - it was entertainment at its best.

Hard to believe that such a top quality drama/musical can be enjoyed so close to home, with no parking woes, or excessive costs. The Show brings with it some magic (seriously), some levitation (seriously again) and an excess of talent. It’s fun and entertaining; there’s a fair amount of innuendo, (check out the scarf-hanger!), plus more than a few double entendres.

However it’s all done with panache, flair and aplomb in a way that won’t fail to entertain the audience.

Definitely worth getting tickets for and I’m so very glad I got to experience The Witches of Eastwick for myself!”

West Melton School have started term three with their much anticipated Book Week.

Stig Wemyss (the voice of the Andy Griffiths audio books) entertained their Year 3 - 6 learners, with voice auditions, as well as reading a book from the 'just...' series. While Year 4 8 learners participated in a writing workshop with Heather McQuillan.

McQuillan Heather writes novels and poetry for young people, including 'Nest of Lies' and 'Mind over Matter'.

“The workshop included writing down your ideas, learning to 'trap' and then 'tame' the ideas before writing a tiny tale,” School spokesperson, Rita Spadoni commented.

The School played host to Jenny C oop er (Illustr ator) on Wednesday, July 25th, and she amazed the Y3 learners with hand-drawn portraits.

Oxford-based author Jennifer Somervell spoke with Y2 and 3 learners along with a reading of her book, ‘The New Old Truck’ (with illustrations by Jennifer’s sister, Margery Fern).

Fern The children liked how the stories in this series are based on real events, that came from childhood adventures growing up in the 1960s and 70’s on the family dairy farm. The adventures in this series of books are told through the eyes of children and contain lots of fun and adventures that rural

kiwi children can relate to.

Also during Book Week, teachers at West Melton read their favourite book to pupils,

there was whanau buddy reading, a book swap, before it all ended with a book character parade on Friday, July 27th.

On Wednesday, July 25th children from Greendale Primary School started the new term off with a trip to the Art Gallery and Court Theatre in Christchurch. This was to launch their Arts’ Term ‘Dressed for Success’.

The children took part in a Drama lesson at the Court Theatre and then at the Art Gallery got to look at the exhibits, before having an opportunity to create their own.

They produced everything from glasses to bags and were understandably proud of the results.

Arts term at Greendale School will culminate with a Wearable Arts Show to be held at the term’s conclusion.

At the Art Gallery the bull made from beef cans was a definite attraction for year 0-2 students from Greendale School.

Brrr it’s cold outside! This month I’d like to talk about the three main systems in your vehicle that are affected by the cold.

It’s definitely battery season and we have been busy replacing old batteries that are failing, but why do batteries fail when the cold weather rolls in?

The most common type of car battery is ‘Lead Acid’. The inner workings of a battery require a chemical reaction to store and then release the stored energy.

When the ‘Lead Acid’ battery fluid is very cold it thickens, or freezes, and this slows the chemical reaction; thus reducing the battery’s output. A battery that is more than three to four years old will only have 50-70% of its original capacity.

Engine oil is the ‘blood’ of your car. Of course it lubricates all moving parts. It also washes away by-products of combustion

(this is why it goes black). It also plays a big part in cooling the extremely hot parts of the engine. As oil gets old it thickens and loses a lot of the properties required to protect your engine. When oil is thick and cold this puts extra load on the starter motor and battery during cold starts.

The cooling system gets a hard time and is often over looked.

The cooling system’s main components are radiator, water pump, hoses, and coolant (water/antifreeze mix). The antifreeze concentration must be checked during regular servicing. Antifreeze isn’t just to stop the freeze part. It also helps prevent rust forming in the cooling system, it increases the boiling point of the coolant and lubricates and conditions the water pump seals and rubber components in the cooling system.

On the two occasions that the South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) have run their event from their permanent venue on Courtenay Road, Kirwee, the Kirwee Brigade has offered their ongoing services as first responders. In support of both the Brigade and the Kirwee community, Michaela McLeod from SIAFD handed over a $5,000 cheque to Kirwee Fire Brigade’s Chief Fire Officer, Stuart Jones, to go toward ‘Project 4x4’.

‘Project 4x4’ funds will be channelled toward the muchneeded replacement of the current support vehicle 7229, that has covered well over 400,000 kilometres. The replacement will be similar to the support vehicle currently operated by Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade. It will encompass several abilities to better assist the Kirwee Brigade which operates in a diverse and expansive area in the Selwyn District; with crews deployed from the city fringes, up to Arthurs Pass.

“Our call-outs are varied and often access to areas are limited, or require investigation over difficult terrain, that our ‘Urban 727’ was not designed for,” Stuart commented. “The current environment and

expectation for our Brigade has seen a significant increase in call -outs over recent years. The need to respond quickly and effectively, with the right equipment, is paramount to our continued ability to conduct a

The Ballet Academy of West Melton have just cause in congratulating the students who competed in the Christchurch Dance Competitions, during the recent school holidays.

“They had an incredible experience and performed their hearts out,” said Academy principal Melissa Jarman. “Our young ballet team won the Classical Team section with their technical proficiency and beautiful artistry.”

Pupils received a personal letter from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Clarke Gayford thanking them for the wonderful wishes and cards they had received.

The McKendry pod learners had sent homemade cards, congratulating the couple on the safe arrival of baby Neve.

POWER OVER ETHERNET OR POE So you have a large house…congratulations - if that’s what spins your wheels, or maybe the granny flat is fifty metres from the back door. All these things mean that if your Internet Router/Modem is placed in the living room or kitchen (where they usually are) then you may not get signal at the end of the house; in the bedroom; garage, or granny flat. There is a practical way to make sure you do.

The title explains it…POE; the connection to give you signal down in the bedroom, or outside, is transferred over the power grid in your house. You get two little boxes in the kit. One connects into the back of the router with a network cable (supplied), and is plugged into the power outlet, usually next to the router.

The second one is also plugged in close to it, and then when ‘Syncing’ buttons are pushed, they are joined. Once synced you can turn off the second one and take this second one down to the end of the house, bedroom or garage, and plug it in to the power again. It then reconnects to the one left behind near the router. This second one, in the bedroom, or garage, also has a wireless access point incorporated into it, meaning that it gives signal for your Wi-Fi device, where ever you want to put it. If it’s on the same circuit all is good.

The best practice is to run a network cable to wherever you need it, but there are times when this isn’t practical, and the POE device is the next best thing.

They usually cost around $150 - $250.00 depending…..

The 24th annual Malvern Game Hunters compe++on, held last weekend, saw around the same number of registra+ons as last year.

Over 200 hunters bagged a good number of large, impressive animals for the weigh in on Sunday at the Coalgate Tavern, which saw people from all over the South Island a0ending.

Cantabrians are invited to reflect on their earthquake experiences at Quake City during an upcoming free entry weekend.

The Canterbury Museum special exhibition will waive its usual entry fee for visitors on Saturday, August 4th and Sunday, August 5th.

The exhibition is designed to take visitors through the events of the Canterbury earthquakes, from the first shake on September 4th, 2010, through the destruction and rescue efforts of February 22nd, 2011 and the cleanup and rebuild over subsequent years.

Almost 250,000 visitors have seen Quake City since it opened in February 2013, including 51,000 since it moved from Cashel Mall to 299 Durham Street North in September 2017.

Canterbury Museum Director Anthony Wright hopes locals will take advantage of this opportunity to see how the Museum presents the events they’ve lived through.

“Quake City is a safe place for Cantabrians to remember and reflect on their own earthquake experiences. I hope they take the opportunity to visit the exhibition for free,” he said.

Quake City exhibits some of the defining objects of the Canterbury earthquak es, including the spire top from the Christchurch Cathedral, as well as items like road cones, water containers and Port-a-loos that were part of many Cantabrians’ lives, post-earthquake.

Visitors can harness pedal power to watch a short film on Gap Filler’s cycle-powered cinema, or design new buildings for Christchurch using Lego bricks. There are also scientific explanations for what caused

the quakes and why the February seismic event, in particular, was so destructive.

The upcoming free entry weekend is supported by the exhibition’s major sponsor, the Earthquake Commission (EQC).

EQC General Manager Resilience Dr Hugh Cowan added, “the Earthquake Commission is proud to be a major sponsor of the Quake City exhibition. The earthquakes will forever be a part of Christchurch’s history

and this exhibition is a way for residents and visitors to connect with the events on many different levels - from the science behind them, to the incredible human stories of community resilience. The inaugural Craig Miller Trophy was presented by Craig’s wife Kathleen to the Waihora Div 1 team after their game versus Darfield Div 1 on Saturday. While the score of 12-0 to Waihora wasn’t what the Darfield Club was hoping for in Craig’s memory - his close association with the Waihora Club made the result a little less harsh to bear. In her speech Kathleen outlined how Craig played all his junior/teenage rugby for Waihora, before senior rugby for Darfield. She explained that this made it fitting to have his Memorial Cup played for between these two teams. The Millers have a strong affiliation with Waihora and Derek Miller, Craig’s brother, is still heavily involved in the Club.

“Our children Ryan, Ben and Kate all played for Darfield which was something Craig was very proud of,” Kathleen added. “He always wanted Darfield to win everything, but if they didn’t, then in his mind, Waihora was the next best on his list.”

More than fifty guests showed up to the Friends of Te Ara Kākāriki Meeting on Thursday, July 26th at Lincoln University.

They came to hear the latest updates of the Trust, hear from the keynote speaker Libby Harrison (Deputy Chair WWF), and to witness the awarding of the Diana Isaac Cup for outstanding native restoration projects in Selwyn.

Trustee, Wim Nijhof began the evening with a reminder of the Trust’s vision to create a greenway of native Greendots forming stepping stones for native birds and invertebrates to spread out across the Cante rbury Pla ins. Wi m summarised the Trust’s achievements to date, sharing with guests how the Trust’s volunteers had assisted landowners to plant over 57,000 native plants in Canterbury over eleven years.

Once the coming Spring plantings are complete, that figure will increase to an impressive 73,000 plants which would not be possible without the current main funders: Ministry for the Environment, Central Plains Water, Rata

Foundation and the Selwyn District Council. Te Ara Kākāriki Public planting days are set to take place at three events in August and September this year with volunteers encouraged to register at www.kakariki.org.nz.

The idea of a legacy project as a new medium-term goal for Te Ara Kākāriki was presented.

The project would ideally be six hectares, which is much larger than anything the Trust has worked on before and would likely be achieved in partnership with other organisations and funders. Ideally, these larger size Greendots are spaced every five kilometres across the Canterbury Plains, as theorised by local ecologists Meurk and Hall.

The history of the Canterbury Plains tells how over the past 150 years the decline of native remnants, due to human activity has resulted in there being only 0.5% of native cover. The ecologists explained the science behind TAK’s Greendot vision commenting that research has shown that birds disperse seeds 2.5km from their source, therefore planting Greendots every 5km will ensure a

sustainable native landscape.

Emphasising the fact that New Zealand’s ecosystems are unique, and many are threatened.

Five dedicated and praiseworthy landowners applied for this year’s Diana Isaac Cup. Bruce Rule and Catherine Ott of The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust announced Hororata’s Olive Webb and Carol Gurney as deserved 2018 winners of the Diana Isaac Cup. The couple’s winning Greendot of over 3,000 native plants stood out for its well restored stream, encouraging native mudfish habitat and a wetland restoration area in process.

Olive shared her pleasure that her original plantings were now over three metres tall and the waterway had transformed from ‘dirty’ to a beautiful e n v i ro n m e n t w h ic h h e r grandchildren now play in. Their commitment to sharing their passion with the community is also acknowledged as they often give tours of the property to people popping in, and consequently several neighbours and friends are eager to undertake similar projects returning their land to native landscape.

On Monday the 23rd the Board’s seventh meeting of the year was held in Greendale.

The usual Board business included a report from the Business Relations Manager in which he informed members of the recent Local Government New Zealand AGM, Conference and Excellence Awards held in Christchurch. With its future-centred theme, the Conference had a strong focus on leadership and addressing big challenges and opportunities currently facing New Zealand and its communities.

The Board received information about the Three Waters Review with which the Government would look to achieve safe and fit-for-purpose drinking water; better environmental performance for water services; and sustainable, affordable service delivery for communities to achieve these outcomes. He said there should be a report back to the Minister around October, noting the conversation is expected to continue into next year.

The Business Relations Manager also showed the Board what the enhanced Council website looked like, highlighting some of the key changes and upgrades.

Reports from the Chair and Board members included issues raised at various committee meetings they attended in the past month.

These included playground items to be replaced, the addition of rubbish bins and committees working together to expand existing cycle and walking tracks.
