Fortunately for organisers of the local fundraising fair held in Darfield on July 1st, the weather was wintery warm, fine and sunny. That fact was reflected in the number of folk who turned up to support the event - 150 of them in fact! Organiser Samantha Clough said that the Fair, which was staged to raise funds for a local family who lost their household contents in a recent fire, had a number of ‘crowd pleaser’ sections and she was heartened by the compliments and feedback received. “Many folk commented on what fun it was to participate in the races,” Sam said. “The egg and
spoon, the sack races and the Fire Brigade’s obstacle course were all a big hit. So much so that people were asking can we do it all again! “Great music by Jumo Magbagbeola and a performance from Vaughan Smart, who at only thirteen, played both banjo and guitar for the crowd.” Add to this bouncy castles, stalls, coffee, sausage sizzle and bake sale - the event was bound to be a roaring success. The bake sale was hosted by Rural Women New Zealand and followed the baking competition (Rural Women provided the judges) where the winners
were announced for; Taste: Kat and Presentation: Nishida. Nishida Raffle winners were also announced and organisers expressed their grateful appreciation for all the sponsorship they gained from businesses and individuals, and made special mention of Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton, Broughton who supported and attended the event. “We raised $974.40,” Sam said, “which definitely wasn’t bad for a winter fair and my
first event.” “I can’t thank the volunteers who assisted, enough,” Sam said. “This event couldn’t have been the success it was, without their help and I really appreciate them being there to help me for the whole day. Overall it was successful - we raised enough money to help Briar and Aaron finish getting the essentials they need and some to buy the smaller items that just create that home environment for their family,” Samantha ended.
