Local golf enthusiast Pip Deans was named Canterbury Golf Volunteer of the Year on Friday, June 15th at the Canterbury Golf Annual Awards evening, held at Russley Golf Club. Pip has been involved with the Hororata Golf Club, on the committee, and contributing behind the scenes for the past twenty-two years. During this past year alone, she has filled the role of Secretary, as well as providing support to the Treasurer. Pip has also actively contributed to the Finance, Course, and Café development committees at Hororata, as well as joining the Executive of Canterbury Golf in 2016. She contributes to a range of different areas within the Club including new memberships and renewals. Pip creatively markets the Club and Course to provide membership options that cater to all golfers. Over the past

coaching at the Club with the support of local professional, Kevin Hughes, Hughes as well as assisting schools in, and around, Darfield. If that doesn’t keep her busy enough Pip facilitates, ‘She Loves Golf’ days for women in the local area and there is now a large group having regular coaching at Hororata and loving the game. The family golf days introduced by Pip have also been a great success with children, mums, dads and grandparents all taking part - in a fun, relaxed environment. “Pip’s commitment to the Hororata Golf club and the game itself is outstanding. Whilst running her own business, voluntarily committing so many hours to the Club is exceptional,” John Morten, Morten President, Hororata Golf Club wrote in the nomination letter for the award. “It was with great pleasure that Hororata Golf Club nominated her for this award in recognition of her valuable contribution to the Club.”

The Selwyn Gallery continues its anniversary celebrations with the exhibition ‘Class Act Re-hung’ from June, 29th to July, 26th.

Philip Baldwin, Baldwin Malvern Community Arts Council Chairperson said, “we are excited to show new works by seven young artists who first

exhibited with us a decade ago. The variety in their styles and choice of media will certainly make this an intriguing exhibition.” All seven of the artists are home -grown, having completed their high school art education at Darfield High School, and still currently reside in the Malvern area. Jane Bowman’s current works use disregarded circuitry components that have been employed to reference oceanic organisms. They are strung in a glassless vitrine, alluding to the display of extinct specimens. Jane was recently selected as a finalist in the 2018 ZONTA Female Art Award at the Ashburton Art Gallery. Nicole Burke is fascinated by the hidden world of complex patterns and details inherent in microphotographs of the natural and the cellular - their dewy crystalline, exotic colours, and

amorphous shapes. She transforms these photographic images into three-dimensional forms. These forms evoke the surreal and fantastical as they are generated from the depths of her artistic imagination. Belinda Cullen-Reid is fascinated by dilapidated old farm buildings, machinery, paddocks, and plantings as a result of her upbringing on a farm near Darfield. She wanders the countryside taking photos of old buildings and silhouettes of tree lines. She also uses acrylic paint and watercolours, and enjoys building different textures through mixed media. Katrina Ellis explores contrasting elements in her work: from run-down old buildings paired with ‘pretty’ images, creating an imaginative world through cut-outs and colour; to decorative elements in harsh typically nondecorative media such as charcoal. Her current works are based around glimpses of what could have been - old versus new. Jessica Gunn is inspired by figurative artists and heavily influenced by experiences drawing Valentino and Dior on

the catwalks of Paris. Her practice is based around people, although she has moved on to an abstract style and approach to her work. Her art appears in publications such as Latitude magazine and The Press. Bianca van Leeuwen’s practice progressed from traditional forms of printmaking into digital photography. Recently she has returned to drypoint etching and monoprint to re-explore favourite images and locations. Molesworth Station, Dansey’s Pass, the West Coast, Porter’s Pass, and Birdling’s Flat are among the locations she has repeatedly documented. Jaimee Peters currently lives and paints on the West Coast, New Zealand. Describing her own work, she said, “in exploring the surfaces that determine perceptions of solidity, I encourage the eye to move restlessly through paintings, using multiple colour, shape and surface contradictions to build up perception and effect in a visual cosmos”. On Monday, June 18th, during National Volunteer Week, local health volunteer Marjorie (Marj) White, White was invited to Parliament by the Minister of Health the Hon. Dr. David Clark’s office, to receive the 2018 Long Service Award for outstanding voluntary service to the health sector. Marj and husband Bob were flown to Wellington for the presentation ceremony which included a tour of Parliament Buildings. The ceremony itself was held in the Grand Hall. Among the other recipients were volunteers representing Youth, Pacific and Maori Health, Health Care Providers and Community Health Services. Marj commented on how very much she and Bob had enjoyed meeting so many other dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers. Marj only learned that she had won her award a few days prior to the awards’ ceremony, and was most surprised that her contribution even warranted consideration! Friends of Darfield Hospital Chairperson Brian Davidson nominated her for the length and comprehensive nature of

her contribution over 34 years. She was one of a group of locals, who under the leadership of the late Mollie Townshend established ‘The Friends of the Hospital’ in 1984. Over the years, Marj has held every office in The Friends, including Patron from 2011 on, President 1996 to 2006, two terms as Secretary-Treasurer mid-1984 to end of 1988 and 2006 to 2008, a committee member from 1984 to 2006

and then again from 2008 to the present time. Over the years Marj has also undertaken the task of collecting and arranging a vast record of hospital memorabilia, and she has been a regular visitor and support to staff and patients. “Our district is fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers like Marj, carrying out remarkable work in the community,” Brian commented. He was especially

delighted to hear that she had been recognised by the Ministry of Health for her outstanding work. He also added that late last year, The Friends had organised a special afternoon

Local dancers Cedar Scott (a student at Anneliese Gilberd Academy), Teresa Barnhill (a student at Levings School of Dance) and Lisalotte Polderman -Charles (a student at Malvern Ballet School) will take to the stage this weekend at the Isaac Theatre Royal, Christchurch. They will be dancing in the Christchurch Ballet Society South Island Ballet Award held from June 29th to July 1st. This major event will once again be the highlight of the South

Island competition dance calendar. The award provides a pathway for South Island dancers to further their training towards a career as a professional dancer. Previous prize winners have gone on to secure positions with professional ballet companies throughout the world. The event is aimed at aspiring young dancers aged from eleven to nineteen, who will be judged by a panel of international and national

adjudicators. Competitors in the Junior and Senior categories take part in a Technical Class and a preliminary round consisting of a Set Variation solo and a contrasting Own Choice solo. The total prize money (in excess of $12,000) is intended to be used towards further studies in classical dance. This supports the aim of the Christchurch Ballet Society to assist, encourage and develop the art of dance.

Police attended three vehicle crashes late on Saturday evening in the Darfield area, all within half an hour of each other. Two were on the Old West Coast Road, while one was on Ward’s Road, near Charing Cross. The temperature at the time was freezing and most the roads in our district were frozen over in locations where trees, and shelter belts, are located on the northern side of them. In the next two months, particularly at night, and in the early hours of the morning, you can expect to encounter icy conditions on our roads. Keep your speeds down and make sure your vehicle

tyres have a good amount of tread on them. Porter’s Pass; dropping into and out-of the Rakaia and Waimakariri Gorges; along with other local bridges, will also be locations where you can expect to encounter icy roads. Most likely the section of road locals know well, the ‘S bends’ (over the main trunk railway line, between Darfield and Kirwee), is always icy; day and night, at this time of the year. Hoskyns Road from State Highway 73 through to the Rolleston township is also frequently frozen over, day and night in the winter-time. Get to know the roads you travel on frequently and be aware of the locations where ice

is likely to form in the winter; drive to the conditions and reduce your speed at these locations. Darfield Police will focus this month on the following traffic offending, when patrolling on the roads:

Ten year old, Darfield Primary School student Jack Guy has recently been selected to be a member of the Junior Representative Choir at the 2018 Christchurch Schools' Music Festival. (The one hundred member strong choir contains singers from Years 5 & 6) Jack took part in last year’s Christchurch Schools' Music Festival in the mass choir (which was made up of various Canterbury primary schools each night) along with other Year 5 and 6 students from Darfield Primary. “He loved the whole experience and decided at that stage to try for a place in the Junior Representative Choir at this year’s event,” Jack’s mother, Elaine Guy said. “Over the last two years, the Darfield Primary School choir teachers have also suggested that this may be something he

should put his name forward for. When applications opened he was still very keen, so we investigated how to apply and what was involved. We then applied online and in March, he was advised he had secured an audition.” While Jack has sung from an early age, he has never had any formal vocal training. His piano tutor, Saba PoldermanPolderman-Charles, Charles kindly helped prepare him for his audition. The auditions took place in May with 600 students taking part hoping to gain one of the 200 places available across the two Representative Choirs. Jack attended his three-minute audition on May 21st and it involved singing the National Anthem, a test on his vocal range by singing scales, plus an ear and memory test to assess his pitch, tone, and recall. On June 17th, Jack and his family were notified by email

that he had been accepted as one of the successful applicants for a Representative Choir. “He was absolutely delighted that having set his sights on making the Choir his hard work and practice had brought it to fruition,” Elaine said with a smile. The Christchurch Schools' Music Festival is an annual event, that takes place over three nights and is this year held from October 24th to 26th at the Horncastle Arena. “As part of Jack's commitment he needs to attend six weekend rehearsals, as well as an intensive three-day holiday programme during October,” Elaine explained. “He will then perform on all three nights of the Festival.” On the last night of the Festival Jack’s peers in Years 5 and 6 from Darfield Primary will join him as part of the massed choir for their school performance.

The King of the Bowl (KOB) is a four round series held by the Canterbury Mini MX Club for four to twelve year old competitors. This year there were 172 riders over the rounds, 151 of them rode on the last competition day - which was held in perfect conditions! The four rounds were all held at the Canterbury Mini MX Club track in Darfield. With eight categories over all age groups, the top points accrued from the best three of the four rounds contributed to the final score. The committee work hard to provide a good track for the youngsters to have fun and also be competitive in their sport. and families travel from all over the South Island to race in the series. Prize giving was held after the last round on Sunday, June 17th at the Darfield Rugby Club and every child that entered received a trophy. Onlookers reported that it was wonderful to see the smiles on the children's faces when they received their trophy! Organisers would like to thank the awesome sponsors of the Club for their ongoing support. The Club is enjoying

Planning and cultivating a garden that will be rewarding takes time and a degree of patience, as John and Patricia Knox at Landsborough Drive, Darfield are finding out. They are following through with planting their garden from the landscape plan created for them by a young Lincoln University landscape architect, before

building a home. Their property adjacent to the Darfield Community water race was completely bare when they purchased it in 2012, and with a lot of enjoyable work, it is now coming to fruition. In the last year or so, the garden has thrived, especially the native plants, due to the particularly wet conditions this

autumn and winter. The garden is now attracting many more birds, bees, butterflies, and passers-by! Ongoing trialling of vegetables and fruit trees to select the most suitable species of plants for Darfield’s climate has resulted in a better knowledge of what to plant that grows well and produces successfully. This coming planting season, the eastern boundary garden will be an array of mixed exotic shrubs and trees, with a sprinkling of colourful flowers, as Patricia and John get the prepared garden beds underway. They both agree that things take time - but it has all been worth it. Their patience has been rewarded with a garden that they hope will be an environment that they can settle into soon and enjoy.

Selwyn district’s economy continues to grow as activity in some traditionally strong sectors tapers off. The latest quarterly economic monitor from analysts Infometrics showed Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in Selwyn at 4.4% pa in the year to March 2018. This is well above average, with the Canterbury region expanding 2.1% in the same period, and 2.7% nationally. Retail continues to grow in the district, with tourism spend one of the highlights in this quarter. Tourism-related spending increased by 17% in the March 2018 year, outstripping the regional increase of 12% and 9.3% nationally. Retail trade activity was up by 14% overall, with the Canterbury region up by 3.5%. Rebui ld-re lat ed projects continue to soften, as house sales have decreased by 7.2% compared with the previous year. Infometrics’ data shows building consents were down, with Council issuing 202 new

residential building consents in the March 2018 quarter, a decrease of 4.2% annually compared with the same period a year ago. That’s consistent with Selwyn District Council data, which shows that in the year to May 2018 a total of 851 building consent applications were received, compared with 996 for the same time last year. Council Building Manager, Vanessa Mitchell said in May, however, Council issued 293 building consents, up from 285 at the same time last year. “We have seen an increase in building consents issued due to increased staff numbers, meaning we’ve been able to process consents more quickly.” There has also been an increase in commercial building consents, attributed to current projects such as the construction of a new primary school in Lincoln worth $6.7m, and a number of warehouse developments in the Izone Southern Business Hub and

Iport worth up to $2m. “This trend will continue into the foreseeable future. We have major projects such as the Lincoln AgResearch joint venture worth $170m, two new prison blocks worth $32m, and Synlait milk processing plant extensions worth $9.5m which are currently being processed, along with other large scale commercial developments,” Vanessa added. In the twelve months to June this year, 330 resource consents were received by Council, compared to 297 this time last year, which is an increase of over 10%. Mayor Sam Broughton said strong commercial growth means the district is heading beyond the re-build phase. “The Selwyn district continues to perform well in retail, tourism and commercial development. Our maturing economy is providing the commercial infrastructure that our people need while creating job opportunities in Selwyn for local people,” he finished.

With the next South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) taking place On Wednesday, March 27th through to Friday March 29th 2019, organisers are already at work preparing to host the event and exhibitors can now register on-line to reserve a site at the permanent venue on Courtenay Road, Kirwee. This year the SIAFD organising committee has a new secretary and events co-ordinator, Tineka Johnstone. Originally from Hawarden and then Methven, Tineka is wellknown to many in Canterbury’s farming community through her work with the Red Meat Profit Partnership (RMPP) and NZ Young Farmers. She says an online application form is now available on the SIAFD website, along with a

prospectus that provides all the information exhibitors need to know regarding how the field days will be run, payment, advertising options, and award competitions. “We want potential exhibitors to start thinking about their options and register early. We are upgrading the website so at present it looks a bit barebones, bu t t h e a l l n ec e ss a ry information is there. The newlook website will be up and running by the end of June.” Tineka said SIAFD is well-known for its machinery demonstrations and this will again be a major attraction. Exhibitors are encouraged to put their latest machines through their paces. “Normally the chair of the SIAFD changes for each field days, but because I am new to the role of

secretary, Rodney Hadfield has stayed on for another term. “Michaela Michaela McLeod will serve as vice chair and Andrew Stewart will be in charge of organising the crops that will be used in the machinery demonstrations,” she said. SIAFD media liaison person Daniel Schat commented that a number of working bees have already been held to prepare the field days site for next year. “This will be the third field days we have had at our Kirwee site, and we are gradually upgrading the facilities. Rain in the lead up to the last field days in 2017 left the laneways muddy, which meant extra work to get them ready for the public,” Daniel added. “This year we are using hard fill from the Central Plains Irrigation scheme to gravel the lanes so we will be ready if we do get wet weather.” A new addition to SIAFD 2019 is the Smart Farming Award. The award recognises the new technology that farmers can use to gather data, make better decisions, operate their businesses more efficiently, and communicate with their advisers and suppliers. The winner will receive $1500 and the runnerup will receive $500. The winner will be announced prior to SIAFD 2019 so that they can take advantage of publicity during the field days.

Glentunnel School children have been on the receiving end of a kind donation from a newly formed community group. The charitable MenzShed group in Darfield very kindly made two new scooter ramps for the students, which were delivered to the School on Friday, June 22nd. Using materials purchased by the School, The group of talented MenzShed-ers constructed the ramps for the School at no further cost to the recipients (the School do however plan to recognise their input). “We are so very fortunate to have been able to acquire the support of this group,” Glentunnel School principal Dion Stechman said. “A big thank you to everyone at the MenzShed.” The children have been challenging themselves during break times by creating different ramp arrangements using both their old and the new ramps. This includes having a gap between the ramps and jumping the gap, while others have been riding over on a ripstick. It’s reported there have been quite a few new jump moves developed over the last couple of weeks already, by keen riders!

Amy will be working with learners as a PE teacher; is a past head student of the school and is reportedly quite excited to be back. Morning sport is amazing! From fitness, to nutrition, to games and so much more fun! The course runs every Tuesday morning from 7:30am to 8:30am and the location rotates around Selwyn venues. There are a group of six West Melton students that join sportspeople from other Selwyn schools. Just knowing ‘what to eat / at what times’ before and after a game and during the game, was so important to me personally. The course runs for approximately two terms. Here are some comments from other students on the course “The thing that I really like about The Sport Development Squad is that we learn more and more each day.” George M. “The best thing I think we have done so far is the teamwork. The team work is really cool because you get to work with people that you have never worked with before from different schools.” Ted W. And also, the strength that we did at CrossFit was awesome! We learnt press-ups and pull-ups, box jumps and much more. Best of all, there is lots more to come and this is only a small snippet it of it!

A number of schools around the Malvern area recently took part in the nationwide Child Cancer Foundation’s Wig Wednesday - a fundraising day for the Foundation with a difference. Many students from local schools donned their wigs and joined hundreds of other students, businesses, community groups and individuals throughout New Zealand. Windwhistle School was one of the schools who got behind the day and showed how much they wanted to support child cancer with a variety of wigs on display atop children’s heads. With a roll of only 37 students, they raised a great total of $92! West Melton School also had fun with Wig Wednesday all of which was organised by the School student executive team. A staff member reported that students came to school in a variety of wigs, hats and homemade creations, to support a great cause and raised $390. Wig Wednesday is an annual event that helps raise awareness for the Child Cancer Foundation and support Kiwi children with cancer.

In 2017 over four hundred New Zealand schools, businesses, and community groups helped raise over $133,000 for Kiwi kids, and organisers are hopeful of reaching that target again this year. The Foundation receives no direct funding from the Government so relies on the generosity of New Zealanders. Thanks to kind donations from Kiwis, the Foundation can be there for the 1,700 Kiwi children currently in New Zealand living with cancer and their families. Assisting them to navigate the child cancer journey, giving them support, strength and helping them maintain hope. Every week more than three children in New Zealand are diagnosed with cancer. A child having cancer is probably one of the toughest things a family will ever go through. “To be able to support these families, Child Cancer Foundation must raise at least $6 million every year. We achieve this ambitious target through a variety of national and local fundraising activities such as Wig Wednesday,” a spokesperson for the Child Foundation explained.

Hororata Primary School are currently doing something a little different. They have put out a call to the community to see if anyone has an unwanted bike that they would be willing to donate to the School. School staff recently discovered that not all children have their own bikes to ride at home, or in some cases don't have a safe place to ride them, due to the nature of their environment. The School then decided as part of their Active Culture programme to collect any old unwanted bikes from the community. These bikes will be used at the School by students during break times. The aim is to give all the children an opportunity to learn to ride a bike, or for those who already can, the chance to practice within the safe School environment. “If you have an unwanted bike the school could have, please let us know, so that we can give it another life here at School,” a Hororata Primary School spokesperson asked.

Some of the issues raised included: • Greendale Reserve playground - replacement or modification with staff and the Committee working closely together to find a suitable way forward for a fun, safe playground for the community, with a point of difference. • Condition of, amongst other roads, Coaltrack end of Bridge Road - options were discussed as to how to maintain with tree roots growing under the road. • Basketball hoop specifications - staff will circulate the NZ standard specifications to committee members. The usual Board business included a report from the Chief Executive in which he informed members of the Extraordinary meeting of Council on June 20th 2018 where the 2018-2028 Long Term Plan was adopted. He also spoke about the Environment Canterbury Representation Review and an Online Voting Trial which may be available for the 2019 Election. The Chief Executive referred to an LGNZ Water 2050: Quality Review Report. It was clear from the report that Councils need to work closely with central government on what priorities are to be addressed. The Mayor added that it was certain that change in the governance of water was coming but what exactly this change would be, was not yet certain. Reports from the Chair and Board members included issues raised at various committee meetings they attended in the past month. There was also a discussion about attending the upcoming Selwyn Awards evening with the Board expressing an interest to possibly host tables. The Board would like to express its gratitude to the Greendale Community for hosting it on Monday.
