Rubie Leech celebrated her eighth birthday on June 10th and looking back it has been a very successful year. Not only has she become a star on New Zealand’s favourite youngsters’ television programme, ‘What Now’ but has celebrated successes recently with dance. Rubie attended the New Zealand Dance Awards (NZDA) competition which was held at the ARA Institute of Canterbury in Christchurch, over Queen’s Birthday weekend. She had three different dances to perform, with her Lyrical dance on Friday morning and then Jazz and Musical Theatre on Saturday morning. “We had two very early starts of 5.30am and 5.45am to get her hair and makeup done before we headed into town,” Rubie’s mother, Kylie Leech explained. “Leading up to this competition, Rubie had been quite sick with a cold, so she only got a couple of practices in once she was feeling well enough,” Kylie added. This didn’t stop Rubie from coming away with a first placing in her Jazz class, third in the Lyrical and fourth for Musical Theatre. “She was thrilled with her results,” Kylie said. “It was a well-deserved win. She was up against a few dancers from the North Island, so it was the biggest win she has had to date.” This is Rubie’s second year of competition in her Jazz and
Musical Theatre routines, but it was only her fourth time in total performing Lyrical on stage, as it was a new genre of dance for her this year. “At the moment her favourite dance is the Lyrical because it’s new, but she still loves the other two as well,” Kylie laughed. “We are very proud of her. She works very hard at her dancing and loves every minute of it. She attends dance classes four days a week and also plays netball, so she is a busy wee girl.” On top of the dance and netball, Rubie has her own segment on ‘What Now’, called Racing with Rubie. After dancing at the NZDA, Rubie stopped in at ‘What Now’ to meet with the presenters and

directors. She also did a mock interview with Chris Kirk, where she taught him some of her dance moves. Rubie will continue with her busy schedule for the rest of the year with more ‘What Now Racing with Rubie’ segments to film. There will also be a large number of dance competitions
and exams that she will attend throughout the South Island. “It’s going to be a very busy second half of the year,” Kylie said. “We would like to thank Rubie’s dance school (TM Dance World and all their lovely teachers) for supporting her in her fun-filled dance journey.”
