Eighteen year old local musician, Holly Kimber, Kimber is a well known name around Darfield and is often a feature at local community events entertaining crowds with her incredible voice. Holly began her musical career, as many young children do, learning an instrument. In Holly’s case this was guitar, which she started playing in year 6. “My mum suggested I try lessons and I told her gosh no! However as mothers do, she dragged me along to the lesson, and I came out absolutely loving it and it has stuck ever since,” Holly laughed. It wasn’t until year 9 at Darfield High School that Holly decided to try her hand at singing lessons with Barbara Mulholland. Mulholland “Again, I immediately fell in love with the concept and enjoyed working on songs, along with trying to master such an amazing new skill,” Holly shared. From that point on singing has become a huge part of Holly’s life and as she has grown older she’s been performing and sharing her talent with others

around Canterbury. “I’ve also been to Blenheim with the Darfield High School Jazz Band to compete in the annual Southern Jam Jazz festival, and even sang the National Anthem at the Hororata Highland Games! Another highlight of my career was recently doing an interview on Plains FM. “I have done work for the Selwyn Arts Council as part of their ‘Summer in Selwyn’ initiative which involved performing at community picnics and music events all over Selwyn, and I have some regular spots where I play in Christchurch. “My favourite gigs are always local ones, or ones close to home,” an enthusiastic Holly explained. “I try to do a gig as often as I can, which is usually just me and my guitar.” Holly sings a variety of music genres and styles, from classic Jazz ballads to a country-style sound as well as everyone’s favourite rock tunes. “My aim is to have songs that will please everybody in the crowd. I'm often rocking out on a Saturday night one week, and then singing some smooth tunes at a Sunday lunch the next.” With her experience singing and performing in front of audiences it is easy to see that Holly has already gained a wealth of

knowledge, and is now ready to take on a new challenge. Holly has now headed to Pennsylvania, U.S.A to Pinemere Camp where her job will be as a song leader, and music teacher. Each summer, Pinemere Camp creates a safe space for children, where they can leave behind the hectic pace, pressure, and technology of ‘the real world’ and just be children.

“I will be specialising in singing, guitar, basic piano, and drums. I will also be coordinating any bands or groups the children at Camp may like to take part in. “I'm super excited, but also incredibly nervous to be spreading my wings on what will be an incredible adventure,” Holly concluded.

Recently local nineteen year-old Rolleston performer Caelan Thomas attended the Musical Theatre New Zealand (MTNZ) Conference in Nelson on behalf of Kirwee Players. While in attendance he was announced as the winner of the Music Theatre International Australasia (MTIA) Nola Speir Patron's NextGen Encouragement Award 2017. “This is a prestigious award, and those who have won it in the past have gone on to be involved at a very high level within performing arts,” Courtney Hyde, Hyde a member of Kirwee Players explained. “I was totally shocked when I won the award, I wasn't aware

I'd even been nominated,” an enthusiastic Caelan said. “ The re we re s o m a ny incredibly talented people there as well, it didn't even register as a possibility. It was all a bit surreal, but I was ecstatic, I went outside straight afterwards and called my Mum.” Caelan started playing piano at age four and worked his way toward the achievement of many piano and music accolades. While he trained initially in classical piano, he has moved into more modern, jazz and improvisation styles in recent times. Caelan's first introduction to 'shows' was when he played in High School Musical in 2014 for Lincoln High School. Since then, Caelan has starred in five other major productions for both Kirwee Players and the Halswell Drama Group. More recently he has taken on the role of Musical Director for two

Kirwee Kids productions. He is a multitalented musician who has accompanied others in examinations, and currently plays as a keyboardist in the band ‘General Admission’. He is now leading and playing piano for the Darfield hub of the Selwyn Community Choir, and acting as co-musical director and conductor when the full choir (Rolleston and Darfield hubs) combine for performances. “Winning the award has opened up a world of opportunities for me. I've made a contact with the managing director of MTIA, and have been invited to another MTNZ conference in Cambridge at the end of August. “Musical Theatre is a huge passion of mine, and I've now got the ability to explore and further that passion and continue to learn,” a smiling Caelan concluded.

Darfield is fortunate to welcome a new business to its midst - Darfield Family Chiropractic. Owned by Chiropractor Dr Mehdi Azimi the practice is a spinal health centre and sets a high standard of community service, pledging to look after its patient’s health in general, but most specifically, the spine. “We pride ourselves on excellent service where we absolutely put your health as our first priority,” Mehdi explained. Mehdi came to New Zealand by himself, eighteen years ago at the age of sixteen. “I escaped from Afghanistan in 1987 during a major war where Taliban almost completely took over Afghanistan. At that time, I was only twelve and migrated to the neighbouring country Iran, hoping for a peaceful and better life. After three plus years, I returned to Afghanistan thinking that the situation would have improved, but sadly it had become even worse. “Once again I fled to another

country and after a long and eventful journey, found myself in New Zealand. I am forever grateful to be here,” Mehdi stressed. “I felt I had been given another opportunity at life when I arrived in New Zealand, but of course had to start from scratch. I could not speak or understand English at the time but undertook to study hard for nearly fourteen years while, at the same time, working to support myself. “My primary education took place at Selwyn College in Auckland, before I moved to Christchurch to finish my secondary education. A Bachelor of Science degree at Otago University followed, majoring in a Anatomy and Physiology, and then a return to Auckland. Here I pursued my dream career at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, but I missed the Christchurch Canterbury community and so, I returned. “This year is my fourth year working as a chiropractor, in both Christchurch and Rolleston,

Preparations are in full swing for the Two Rivers Community Trust Events ‘Matariki in Malvern’, to be held at Darfield Recreation Centre on Saturday, June 16th. Kapa haka performances are being rehearsed, hangi meal ingredients are being ordered and community contributors are gathering what they need for their hands-on stations. “All of this is weaving together to make a fabulous event for the community to enjoy,” said event organiser Kelly Maude. Maude “To welcome you in from a cold June evening, you will be greeted by a spectacular fire poi performer,” Kelly added. “Then you walk through the special entranceway created by Darfield Playcentre, where you can experience the native bush at night time during Matariki. You will then be invited into the Hall to find a seat ready for the amazing kapa haka performances.” The event will officially begin with a mihi whakatau (welcoming ceremony) which will be led by Kaumatu (elders) from Ngati Moki Marae

(Taumutu) and will include welcoming karakia (prayers) and whaikorero (speeches), plus a welcome from Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton. This will lead into performances from the four kapa haka groups representing the nine Malvern Schools; Darfield High School, Darfield Primary School, Kirwee Model School, and the South Malvern Collective (comprised of Glentunnel, Greendale, Hororata, Sheffield, Springfield and Windwhistle Schools). Wowed by these performances, visitors will then have the opportunity to enjoy sharing kai together with a hangi meal, prepared and served by special visitors from Taumutu. There will also be pumpkin and vegetable soup alternatives available for sale, along with hot fruit crumbles for dessert and hot drinks as fundraisers for Darfield Primary School, Glentunnel School, and the Darfield Community Garden. “With warm, full tummies, everyone can enjoy the variety of hands-on stations and try their hands at making and creating. “Maybe make a

Proudly supporting Matariki in Malvern - Saturday 16 June!

Celebrate Matariki (the Maori New Year) with ‘Installed’: Artist in Residence printmaking and bunting workshops, creating kites and stars, digital storytelling and more in Selwyn District Libraries this June. Matariki is the Māori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters which rise in late May or June. This year it rises on Friday, June 15th. Matariki stories will be screened at the Libraries and Kite Making sessions take place on Saturday, June 16th, at all libraries, and on Wednesday, June 20th at Darfield Library. Star Making sessions will also be held, on Tuesday, June 12th, at Darfield Library. Another round of star making will take place at all Libraries

on Saturday, June 23rd. Darfield Library is also hosting Selwyn’s first resident artist during Matariki, with the Installed: Artists in Residence Ngā Toi Māori residency featuring artist Emma Kitson. Kitson She will be at Darfield Library from June 11th-15th, working on a series of linocuts depicting each of the Matariki stars. The prints will be converted into bunting which will be gifted to Darfield Library. Emma will also be hosting a drop-in Printmaking from Home presentation on Tuesday, June 12th and a Whānau DIY Matariki Bunting workshop on Saturday, June 16th. Let’s Talk Tyres There has been a bit of press lately about tyre tread depths and tyre performance when they are worn. NZTA road crash data shows in the last three years, 32 fatalities were linked to worn tyres. We at Darfield Automotive undertake WOF checks under contract to NZTA and the legal minimum for tyre tread depth is 1.5mm. But we know from experience that once a tyre gets to this level it loses almost all of its performance, in fact, in wet conditions, at 1.5mm of tread, the vehicle takes twice the stopping distance than if it had new tyres fitted. The MTA is currently running a campaign to inform road users about the dangers of running

worn tyres. They are encouraging vehicle users to check their tyres every few months and are asking road users to consider changing their tyres at around 3mm. Tyres are not just round black things holding up your car. We firmly believe that tyres should be fitted to people and their driving style as much as they are physically fitted to your car. If you are doing long straight running then you want a different tyre to someone who drives a lot on shingle roads, or to someone who drives around hills. Take your time when choosing new tyres, as a poor tyre choice may cost you more. The wrong tyre type will wear prematurely and cost you more

in the long run. Generally speaking ‘Budget’ or ‘Ultra-high Performance’ tyres won’t last as long as better ‘Entry Level’ or ‘Premium’ tyres. There is a price/performance curve when it comes to tyres. • Budget tyres don’t perform well and don’t last well. • Entry level and Premium tyres perform better and last the longest. • Ultra-high performance tyres have amazing performance, but don’t last well and cost the most. The Malvern Under 15 Development Team attended the Under 14/15 Netball Mainland Zone Competition in Ashburton over Queen’s Birthday Weekend. The team was the youngest involved in the competition and although they didn’t win a lot of games, team management team reported that they played extremely well. Players treated the tournament as a big learning curve, especially as most had never played in a major indoor tournament before. The Netball Mainland Zone is made up of eighteen Centres stretching from Waimate in the south, to Golden Bay in the north of the South Island. Sounds from the talented artists performing spilled out in the street and was also enjoyed by those passing by. The concert was organised by Yerane Davies and took place to raise funds for her daughter Manaia’s travel to America with dance group NZX . The DHS year 7/8 teams were also victorious taking out the overall year 7/8 Quad Tournament which took place at Geraldine. This year the event included teams playing netball, rugby & football.

The focus of the ‘knit-in’ will be supporting the Neonatal Trust’s ‘Small Babies, Small Knitting’ campaign creating beanies for premature babies - beanies knitted will be donated to local neonatal units. Experienced knitters, as well as complete beginners, are welcome to join the group, enjoy knitting company and conviviality, share skills or learn something new. Tea and coffee will be provided, but anyone intending to join in should bring their own snacks and lunch. World Wide Knit In Public Day is the largest knitter event in the world, and connects a very colourful, passionate and cozy community of knitters. It was established in 2005 as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company, and today clearly demonstrates that it is not only grannies who knit, and in each community there is a wealth of knitting knowledge to be shared. While the origin of the name suggests it’s just about knitting, over the years, it has become an inclusive event for all fibre lovers and the day is celebrated in 57 countries. Knitting patterns for premature babies can be collected in advance from the Darfield Library and any completed items after the Knit in Public Day can be dropped there also. Young local runner Nathan Carter (who featured in the News recently, along with some information about the Autism Spectrum Disorder) has just completed another successful run in the para athletes class of the Canterbury Cross Country Championships. Nathan won the two kilometre race, held at Ascot Park, on May 28th. A family member who accompanied Nathan to the event (his Mum was at work) commented that a highlight was when the organisers announced over the PA that Nathan Carter from Darfield High School was the one to watch in this race. “Nathan also coped extremely well with a last minute change in the race distance,” reported Mum Bridget, “he was expecting to run one kilometre, but a quick phone call to me before the race reassured him that it was OK to run the two. Next step is Nationals but is going to wait until next year, as it is in Taupo and travel is quite expensive,” a very proud Bridget ended.

On June 2nd and 3rd, and for the first time in ten years, the South Island Synchronised Swimming Championships were held in Christchurch. Not only were they held in the Province but they were hosted by local Weedons Swim School, Small Strokes. The Championships took place at Jellie Park Pool and attracted swimmers from Invercargill, Queenstown, Dunedin and Christchurch. “Small Strokes Synchro (the only Christchurch Club) performed extremely well,” reported Small Strokes principal, Joan Billing, Billing “and they delighted the crowd with their routines.” The competition was run in two parts: Figures on Saturday: Routines on Sunday. A group of community agencies in Selwyn, supported by the Council, have launched a onestop shop with information on everything residents and newcomers need to know about the district. The Everything Selwyn website will become a comprehensive online directory of services in the Selwyn district, offering information about everything from local schools and sports teams to special interest groups and events. It also provides practical information for those new to Selwyn and New Zealand, including information about banking, the IRD and health care. Jason Flewellen, Flewellen Selwyn District Council’s Community Development Advisor said, “everything Selwyn is an easily accessible community database for anything of interest to Selwyn residents, those who have been here a while, as well as those brand new to the area. “The website is a go-to for the community to find out the latest information, and also let others know about their own events and services. Adding a listing is super easy and free,” he said.

The concept for the website was developed out of the research findings from the Selwyn District C ounci l’s M igra nt s a nd Newcomers Strategy. It was identified that those new to the district have no single point of contact where community information is easily and readily accessible. Migrants and newcomers, and current residents will benefit from connecting more closely through the website. Those without internet can also access the website at Selwyn District Libraries. The website has been developed by Council in conjunction with Selwyn’s four community care groups: Ellesmere Community Care Organisation, Lincoln and Districts Community Care, Selwyn Central Community Care, and Malvern Community Care. These groups will help promote, maintain and moderate listings

as administrators of the website. Beverley Elder of the Malvern Community Care Group said Everything Selwyn will enable all newcomers to Selwyn to learn about the area. “It’s exciting that anyone will be able to access information about Selwyn online, all in one place. “The website means even those who live in Selwyn but work out of the district, have the opportunity to get involved and have community contact. Everybody can be linked in. “I love that the Community Care groups are there as a gatekeeper, to encourage the community to be involved and contribute. The more people use the website, the more useful it will be as a constant flow of information to help people find what they are looking for,” Bev said. Members of the Selwyn community are encouraged to upload their own events and services, to populate the website. Anyone can upload information after registering to the site with their name, email address, and a password. The website is grouped into various helpful sections including township information, amenities, arts culture and heritage, churches and celebrants, community and special interest, education, health and wellbeing, and sport and exercise.

SPORTS RESULTS

Malvern Community Board Mee ng On Monday, May 28th, the Board held a meeting in Darfield where the Chair thanked members for participating in the recent Anzac Day services throughout the area. The Chair also spoke of the Selwyn Awards for which nominations are now open, including a new People’s Choice Award. Attending the meeting was Council’s Property and Commercial Manager who spoke to the Board about the success of the two community recycling drop-off days held in Malvern and Ellesmere. The drop-off days provided residents with an alternative drop-off point for garden waste and some types of recyclables. Collecting over 25 tonnes of garden waste, 6.5 tonnes of scrap metal and almost 160 tyres for recycling across the two sites, the event had much appreciated volunteer assistance from the Malvern Lions Club and Hororata Golf Club. He also touched on a Freedom Camping Symposium held in late April where the LGNZ good practice guide for freedom camping was launched, as well as a remembrance tree planting programme to recognise men and women who served in the New Zealand Defence Force. It is expected that planting of the trees will occur over the month of Matariki on various types of publicly accessible land, including Marae, public parks and other places of remembrance. The Property and Commercial Manager informed the Board of some of the current key projects in his Department. The Board approved a discretionary fund application for a Malvern Matariki Celebration to be held in Darfield on June 16th, 2018.
