SkyCity sold-out gala evening. RBS provides high-quality dairy shed design and build services to the Canterbury region, and this was their second entry and their second award.

Owners Nigel and Ruth Hodges, Hodges have a background in the building industry, and set up RBS in 2009 to provide quality commercial buildings to the rural sector. “I found the rural building industry had rather inconsistent quality and results,” Nigel commented. “Coming from a commercial background I knew we could offer high-quality results every time.” Confirmation that RBS has achieved just that has come in the form of the Silver Award from the New Zealand Master Builders Commercial Project Awards for 2018. Organising any event can often be fraught with worry, as well as involving a considerable amount of hard work. When local woman Sarah Blackburn undertook to facilitate a Pink Ribbon breakfast at Darfield’s Terrace Cafe and Bar, for a cause dear to her and her family’s heart, she did encounter some last minute stress that it would be a success. Yerane Davies has been working tirelessly to put together a fundraising event for her daughter Manaia. Manaia Local, thirteen-year-old, Manaia, has been handpicked to be part of an elite New Zealand, junior, hip-hop, dance crew, called NZX. The group are entered in the prestigious Body Rock competition to be held in San Diego at the end of June. “This is a great opportunity, but the timeframe is a little scary, as is the cost,” Yerane explained. Manaia and her family have been looking at ways to fund her training (which takes place in Auckland) and the big trip away, including sponsorship and varous fundraising ideas. Yerane has been busy organising an Acoustic Sounds event to be held at the Darfield Eco Garden Centre, that will showcase a variety of artists. “I wanted to put together something in a way that I thought would not just benefit Manaia, but also benefit local businesses and local artists at the same time,” Yerane

explained. Yerane approached the artists, and most were able, and more than happy, to help Manaia on her journey. Yerane reported that many of the artists understood the struggles involved in all the travel and training. Ashy Batchelor told Yerane that she knew how much it costs to travel to America, as well as how much effort it takes to follow your dreams, and she was happy to support the cause. “Initially I approached friends of mine, like Anika Moa and Kaylee Bell, Bell asking them to perform however they had other commitments, though they emailed back with lovely messages of support and encouragement for Manaia,” Yerane smiled. “I really wanted to bring an event like this to Darfield because it is a way we can bring our community together,” she explained. “We have the lovely Jarnia and Jason Kupe from the Hororata Cafe catering the event, with
food, and drinks available to purchase. So come have drink with a Butcher’s Pie and relax to the acoustic sounds of our amazing local artists John Grenell, Amiria Grenell, Ashy Batchelor, Holly Kimber and Cingston Brown.” Brown There will also be a raffle on the day and organisers are hoping for nice weather!

After looking at some of Nigel’s other builds in Canterbury, Peter and Kristy knew RBS was the right company to build their dream dairy. “This has been a fantastic example of getting things right first time, and future-proofing a dairy farm. It has really taken things to the next level,” Nigel said. “The project hasn’t been about meeting minimum compliance standards, but about embracing the future direction of dairying. Effluent recycling, solar power and feed pads are just three of the environmental innovations included at Waipapa Farm.” Peter and Nigel were proud of the finished product and held an open day for the public to see around the new facility. There was a large turnout, demonstrating how valuable farmers find it to actually see for themselves what others are doing. This viewing of RBS work also resulted in new clients requesting RBS to complete new projects.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has welcomed the Government $142 million investment to make Kiwi homes healthier. burden on Kiwi families, as well as the health system.” Andrew said some parts of the community are particularly at risk. “Low-income families, young children and the elderly are especially vulnerable to the impacts of living in cold, damp housing.” The first year of the programme will focus on ceiling and underfloor insulation as the highest priority for creating a warm, dry home, Andrew explained. “Homes that aren’t properly insulated are very costly to heat, with heat escaping through the ceiling and underfloor.” “Lower-income home owners will be able to access grants covering two thirds of the cost of installing ceiling and underfloor insulation.” Grants to install heating appliances will be available from July 2019, Andrew said. Warmer Kiwi Homes will be delivered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) which is working through details of the new grants programme. Frequently asked questions When will the new Warmer Kiwi Homes start? Home owners can apply for grants from July 1st 2018. Who is eligible for grants? • Those on low incomes who own and live in their homes (not landlords) are eligible. • Low income will be defined as those who either: - have a Community Services Card, OR - live in a New Zealand Deprivation Index decile 9 or 10 area, OR - are families referred through the Ministry of Health’s Healthy Homes Initiative.
Who is not eligible for grants? Landlords will not be eligible for Government subsidy for insulating their rental property from 1st July 2018. The deadline for the current landlord subsidy is June 30th, 2018. What do the grants cover? The grants cover ceiling and underfloor insulation and ground moisture barriers. From year two they will also cover the installation of a heating device. Details on which heating devices will be funded are still being worked through. How many homes will be insulated? EECA estimates 52,000 houses will be insulated, or have a heater installed, over the four years of the programme (some will receive both). Why are heating measures being brought in later? Heating measures will be added from July 1st, 2019 to align with the heating standards being developed under the Healthy Homes Guarantee Act. Insulation is always the first priority for creating a warm, dry home.

On Saturday, May 19th 950 Firefighters raced up the 51 flights, 1,103 individual steps of the 328 metre high, Auckland Sky Tower. In a display of fitness and competition the Firefighters were raising much needed funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC). LBC does not receive government funding, so the dollars raised from the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge help fund their core services, including patient support, support and funding for research, awareness and advocacy. In 2018 collectively more than $1.25 million has
been raised by firefighters from communities around New Zealand, as well as competitors attending from Australia and the USA. The fastest firefighter, winning for his eighth year in a row, was Josh Harrison of Mt Wellington Fire Brigade who set a new record for the event at eight minutes and eleven seconds. Amongst those accepting the challenge were four climbers from the Kirwee Fire Brigade. Dale Evans and Stu Begg had both competed before and they were joined by two first timers, Blair Jones and Garry Robinson. Robinson It was reported that it was a gentle weather day for Auckland this year and the Kirwee contingent were drawn as an early run, squad 18, at about 11:00am. This saw them not too hot and dehydrated before they started their climb. “1103 steps later, with full firefighting gear, weighing around 25 kilos, they all arrived at the top with times as follows,” said a Brigade spokesperson.

Frews Contracting make short work of the old West Melton Fire Brigade building - the new Station is at the rear. Last Tuesday, May 22nd, Frews Contracting began the job of demolishing the West Melton Fire Brigade’s station, having already completed the ground works for the new building, which is due to be officially opened after construction is complete. “The demolition of the old 100m2 building took two days,” said Hayden Shivas, Shivas Frews Contracting Assistant Project Manager. “The new building which is nearing completion, is 380m 2 and will be fully completed some time next month. Chris Caldwell Deputy Fire Force Controller commented, “prior to New Zealand Fire Service and NRFA (rural fire) merging and becoming FENZ (Fire and Emergency NZ) last year, we have always been funded and managed by the Selwyn District Council. It was decided a few years ago we needed a new station. We acquired a second truck and a ute, but had nowhere to put them. The existing station was built circa 1965 and had developed a number of problems; leaking, birds getting in, and was barely big enough for the main truck. The Council agreed to fund a new station and two or three years ago we started progress on the plans for it, however before the build started, the FENZ merger occurred. Selwyn
agreed to give the money they were going to spend on it to FENZ to keep the project going. We may not have been on the FENZ priority list to have our station upgraded - there are plenty of others in the same, or worse, states around New Zealand, so we really do give credit to SDC, and particularly Douglas Marshall for this. Without them it wouldn’t have happened when it did.” Construction on the new station began in mid-January this year using a design largely formulated following input from all the West Melton crew after their visits to several other stations to gain inspiration. “Some of it is standard NZFS spec, some of it we have modified and tweaked and, dare I say it, improved on other designs,” Chris said. “We now have a huge engine bay, capable of storing. not just our three vehicles, but at least one other should FENZ decide to expand West Melton’s capabilities. The training room is large and, together with a decent kitchen, office and equipment store, it could be multi-use, eg as a civil defence base in a non fire disaster, or simply as an ICP if a major incident occurred in West Melton.” Following the demolition of the old station the area in front of the new building will be
asphalted to provide a large working area. The West Melton Brigade has sixteen members and while they’re not actively recruiting more, they do have a waiting list that interested persons can add their names to (“especially shift workers who may be available during day time,” Chris added) and the new station has locker space for up to 24. The West Melton Brigade attends incidents anywhere in Selwyn if required. “We will co-respond with our immediate neighbours, Kirwee and Rolleston, and Harewood to the east, but historically we have gone all over Selwyn. We are unique to the red old-NZFS trucks in that we can pump and roll, eg we can move and fight fire. The red trucks are basically PTO driven and either drive or pump. We are a rural fire force, so don’t normally do medical turnouts, or car crashes. This summer has been a little quieter for the Brigade than usual; we average 80-100 calls a year, (July to June). With June approaching, we are up to call 65. Last year we did about 120.” During demolition and forecourt surfacing the Brigade’s vehicles have been housed in a local barn owned by Robin Butt. The Selwyn Tourism Summit is a free opportunity for local tourism operators to find out how their business can prepare and improve on their work with the international market to bring tourists to Selwyn. With the exciting news that TRENZ is being held in Christchurch in 2020, the Summit aims to help Selwyn vendors get ready for trade. TRENZ is the premier annual business-to-business travel and trade event for the tourism industry in New Zealand. KIMBER RURAL FENCING FENCING With a fresh morning and blue skies, Kirwee Rugby Club Day 2018 was set to be good one. The youngsters started things off at 9am with Rippa rugby followed by seven junior games. It was reported that these were played on well-prepared fields with the last one finishing just prior to the first of the two senior games.
A popular barbecue run by parents, coffee cart and bouncy castle kept supporters of all ages fed and entertained. All the attention was soon focussed on the Div 2 and Div 3 matches aga inst Bank s Peninsula. A large crowd arrived with many familiar faces, including sponsors, old boys, and many

With nearly one hundred registered junior players this year, Kirwee Junior Rugby has a strong presence in the Ellesmere competition. The Club has two Under-6 and Under-7 teams, and a team each in the Under-8’s, Under9’s and Under-10’s. This season the Under-11 players joined with the Sheffield Under-11 Club players to create the ‘Kirwee Sharks’ team. Kirwee is a family-oriented Club that takes great pride in its grassroots rugby. All junior players give 100% each week, exhibiting fantastic fair play, with some excellent skills being demonstrated by these future All Blacks! The recent Club Day was a brilliant success, displaying the true family nature of the Club. The fact that some parents are
supporters. Div 3 managed a hard-fought and well-deserved win, typically the experience of the senior statesmen in the team played a big role in getting them a 3324 victory. A top of the table clash followed with the Div 2 side raring to stamp their mark all over a very young and well-drilled side from Little River. With both teams having lost just one game so far this season, many were predicting a close result. Unfortunately, Banks Peninsula was too good on the day running away with the game in the second half and proving they will be title contenders for the 2018 season. Kirwee coaches and players commented that the loss is just a speed bump and the result will be learnt from. Focus has now moved to this weekend’s game against Burnham/Dunsandel/Irwell (BDI) at Kirwee beginning at 2:30 pm. Club Day festivities lasted long into the night, with some saying it was one of the biggest days in years. Huge thanks to all supporters, sponsors and old boys who turned up on the day. The Club appreciates the effort from all those involved in setting up for the day.

As reported in April the Malvern Cancer Support Group received a large donation generated by the Malvern Lions Annual Golf Tournament. This was a hugely successful and rewarding day for all those involved. The donated funds will go toward as sist ing locals undergoing treatment following
a cancer diagnosis. The Group also committed to purchasing a lifting piece of equipment called a Sara Stedy for the Darfield Hospital from these funds. “It was with great pleasure that I recently attended a Friends of Darfield Hospital meeting to hand over the cheque for this, to Brian Davidson and Jill Moore,” Moore Elaine Guy, Guy Chairperson for the Malvern Cancer Support Group said. On Wednesday, May 23rd the Malvern Lions kindly invited the Group to attend their meeting. This was to receive a cheque for the remaining amount that the Golf Tournament generated. A fantastic $9,000 cheque was added the $10,000 previously
received from the day. “The Malvern Cancer Support Group is indebted to the Malvern Lions for this level of generosity,” Elaine said. “It will go a long way to funding our support to the community over the next few years.” Diana Reid, Reid a founding member of the Malvern Cancer Support Group and Jim Collier (husband of the late Janice Collier) Collier spoke at the Lions meeting of the early days of the Group and how it has evolved over the years with the support of great organisations like the Lions. “We wish to take this opportunity to publicly thank them for all they have done and continue to do,” concluded Elaine.

On Saturday, June 16th the Darfield Recrea on Centre will be a hub of ac vity when the Two Rivers Community Trust Events host the inaugural ‘Matariki in Malvern’ for the community. The event will involve a spectacular celebra on of kapa haka performances, represen ng all nine Malvern Schools, the sharing of kai with a hangi, and a variety of hands-on ac vi es and interac ve displays facilitated by members of the local community. “There will also be a few other treats that will warmly welcome our guests,” commented event organiser Kelly Maude. “More details of what will be happening throughout the evening will be explained in next week’s edi on.” What is Matariki, and why was it chosen to be the focus for Two Rivers Community Trust’s new event? Matariki is the name of a cluster of stars, also known as the Seven Sisters, that appears early in winter. The appearance of Matariki in the sky indicates the me that Maori celebrate their new year. “This is a me to reflect on the year that has passed, and the opportuni es of the year to come,” Kelly said. “A me to spend with your whanau sharing stories or knowledge. Also a me to organise food for the winter months ahead and the prepara ons towards the harvest in the year to come. We thought Matariki created a wonderful opportunity to join together as a community, to bring some warmth and cheer to the encroaching winter and celebrate the Maori New Year… and it’s a perfect occasion to have a hangi! “The Marae for our community is Nga Moki Marae, located in Taumutu, near Southbridge on the banks of Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora). Representa ves from Te Taumutu Runanga are proud to be joining us for Matariki in Malvern and will be preparing and serving 500 hangi meals for us to enjoy,” Kelly added. Entry to the event is strictly by cket only, to ensure the maximum capacity of the venue isn’t exceeded. Tickets are available for collec on from Darfield Library and Johnny Fresh. “There is an old established Maori custom that when people come to a gathering, they support it by giving a koha (giR or dona on),” Kelly explained. “The amount is not important, it is all about the act of giving, according to your means. There will be koha boxes at the cket collec on points, and at the entrance to the event to give you the opportunity to give. Described as one of the coolest singing groups the Young@Heart Chorus are heading to Christchurch on June 8th and 9th and the Malvern News has an opportunity for two lucky readers to attend their oneonly public performance. The group is made up of singers all aged 70+, but their songs come from every era! The Chorus performs a range of favourites, with numbers from the likes of Oasis, Imagine Dragons, and the Backstreet Boys, through to Miley Cyrus and ‘This is Me’ from the Oscar nominated film The Greatest Showman. The NZ Young@Heart Chorus started nearly six years ago, and is made up of more than thirty singers who regularly perform smaller concerts to audiences at schools and prisons. With the aim to redefine the way people see ageing, the group chooses songs that embody the way they feel about getting older. Chris Bevan, Bevan the Musical Director and founding member of the NZ Young@Heart Chorus, commented: “People think that because we are a
chorus made up of all over 70s, we’re going to be singing songs from the 40s and 50s. While we love those songs, we still very much live in the modern world and also love the songs you hear on the radio. Plus the love of music is an awesome way to connect with younger generations.” Now in its second year supporting the group, Arvida is ecstatic to be working with Young@Heart again. Last weekend was a full weekend of Netball and it was reported that teams from the South Malvern Club are thoroughly enjoying their Saturday games. There were many Club supporters on the side lines, enduring the freezing cold, to watch all the South Malvern teams, which was greatly appreciated by the players. “We've got some very positive and helpful supporters, who are always willing to get involved. We would like to say thank you to them all,” a South Malvern Netball Club spokesperson said. On Sunday, May 27th the Club had players trialling for the Malvern Representative teams, as well as for the Primary
Development team. “We would like to congratulate those players that made it into teams. They are all looking forward to gaining more experience and learning more about the game.” The Club also has a number of players starting to take an interest in becoming umpires. “Hopefully with a little training they will also get an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of netball,” the Club spokesperson said. “Thanks to everyone who continues to support the South Malvern Club.
